Gears served as one of the Autobots aboard the Ark and was reactivated on Earth after millions of years in stasis. He became part of Optimus Prime’s Earth-based force, fighting the Decepticons while openly hating the planet’s mud, weather, organic life, and general inconvenience. Despite his constant complaining, Gears remained a reliable Autobot soldier and support operative, helping the team through missions even when he made it clear he would rather be anywhere else.

One of his most notable incidents happened when Megatron needed a special component from Gears’s body, often referred to as his personality circuit, as part of a plan to create a powerful solar needle. After the Decepticons removed it, Gears became unnaturally cheerful and cooperative, while Megatron used the stolen part for his larger scheme. The Autobots eventually recovered the component and restored it to Gears, bringing back his usual miserable temperament, which proved to be part of who he was rather than a simple flaw to erase.

Appearance: Gears has metallic red, blue, and gray armor with a short, stocky robotic build, broad torso, thick limbs, and heavy block-like proportions. His body is fully artificial, made from hard vehicle-panel plating, squared joints, and layered mechanical sections. His head is compact and helmeted, set into a large red hood-like upper torso frame. The face is silver-gray with a flat mechanical mouth, angular cheek plates, and a squared chin. His eyes are bright blue, narrow, and recessed beneath a dark brow ridge. The head is framed by a rounded dark gray helmet section, with red armor rising around it in a high collar-like structure. His chest is broad and red, formed from large angular vehicle panels with beveled edges, visible seams, and scuffed metal surfaces. A vertical grille sits in the center of the upper chest, bordered by a silver frame with gold slats inside and a small yellow triangular panel beneath it. Below the grille, a red Autobot insignia is printed on the front plate. The torso narrows into a thick red waist section with segmented panels and dark recessed mechanical gaps. His shoulders are large and rounded, with black tire sections visible behind them. The upper arms are blue and blocky, built from stacked rectangular armor pieces with panel lines and worn edges. His forearms are also blue, wide, and squared, ending in large silver robotic fists with segmented fingers and rounded knuckle joints. His lower body is mostly red, with thick rectangular thighs, heavy knee blocks, and large shin armor. The legs are built from broad vehicle-like plates with deep inset panels, angular edges, and darker mechanical joints visible between the sections. His feet are oversized and blue, shaped like heavy rectangular vehicle parts with hollow black front openings and flat, wide bases.

Personality: Gears is a gruff, pessimistic Autobot who complains so constantly that it almost becomes part of his function on the team. He dislikes Earth’s organic messiness, misses Cybertron’s metallic environment, and often acts irritated by nearly everything around him, but his crankiness does not make him disloyal or cowardly. Beneath the grumbling, he is dependable, hard-working, and willing to do his part in battle or support work, even if he complains the entire time. Some descriptions also frame his negativity as partly intentional, since his exaggerated complaining can make the other Autobots feel better by comparison.

His relationships with the Autobots are defined by familiarity, tolerance, and trust rather than warmth. Optimus Prime and the others know Gears is difficult, but they also know he can be counted on when needed. His personality chip being removed once made him unusually cheerful, and the Autobots briefly preferred that version of him, but restoring the chip was necessary, returning him to his usual sour temperament. That incident shows that his teammates may find his attitude exhausting, but they still accept him as part of the Autobot family.

Gears is physically strong, durable, and built for heavy labor, with enough endurance to operate in harsh terrain and dangerous conditions. He is especially useful for transport, hauling, supply work, and rugged field operations, making him more of a practical utility Autobot than a flashy specialist.

His equipment includes infrared sensors and powerful compressed-air jets in his feet, which allow him to launch himself short distances and move over difficult ground. His alternate mode is a blue pickup truck, giving him reliable cargo and transport capability on Earth.

The Autobots usually find themselves defending both their own race and other species against the Decepticons and upholding justice and freedom throughout the galaxy. A generally heroic, honorable group, they tend to be dedicated to peace, and feel a need to protect other races from the Decepticons. As a result, they are usually Transformers who change into non-combat oriented alternate modes such as domestic vehicles, cars, trucks, or rescue vehicles. This is not always the case, however, as their ranks certainly contain ne'er-do-wells, malcontents, and unsavory types, and the necessities of war have led many to adopt more combat-oriented alternate forms. While the Autobots have usually found themselves outnumbered by the Decepticons, the Autobots have always had home-field advantage, having not only the humans' military support, but also having more places on Earth to fall back on, while the Decepticons are entirely unwelcome on Earth. Key concepts that repeat throughout most continuities are the use of the name Prime (or a variation thereof) to denote Autobot leadership, and the existence of an artifact of great life-giving power, usually referred to as a "Matrix", traditionally held by their leader.

The Decepticons are a faction typically concerned with such things as conquering Cybertron, defeating the Autobots, amassing large quantities of energon, developing powerful weaponry, and beating people up. Not necessarily in that order. Unlike the Autobots, whose leader is a Prime bearing a Matrix, the Decepticons are led by the most powerful of their ranks. This tends to cause some conflict, given how generally every Decepticon thinks that they're the most powerful. Also, the Decepticons are not exactly the most compassionate beings in the universe, but not all fight for greed. More than a few have a sense of honor, while others believe that Cybertron would be better protected by aggressive expansion. Ultimately, the Decepticons desire to protect their homeworld, even if it is at the expense of others.

The spark is the core of Transformer life, an electrically charged mass of positrons formed from the supernatural substance known as Rarified Energon. Sparks come in a wide range of colors—while most are some shade of blue, green, yellow, orange, white, and red sparks have all been observed. While their appearances may vary, every spark functions as a combined heart and soul for an individual Cybertronian: like a heart, a Spark "pulses" at a certain frequency to animate a mechanical bodyframe; like a soul, a spark is generally accepted to contain some part of a Transformer's immaterial being, which persists after death by transcending into the afterlife. Indeed, most Cybertronian religions hold that each spark contains an infinitesimally small portion of Primus's divine essence. To protect their sparks, which usually can't survive outside of a compatible body for very long, most Cybertronians possess a specialized "spark chamber" somewhere in their body.

Most forms of Cybertronian reproduction involves the creation of a new spark—in many realities, supernatural artifacts such as the Vector Sigma supercomputer or the AllSpark can generate sparks at will, which can be implanted into a suitable receptacle to create a new Transformer. These newborn sparks contain the hard-coded design schematics that act as a Transformer's "genetic code", which dictates a Transformer's appearance and sometimes even their alternate modes. Sparks can be safely stored in stasis pods, "frozen" within photonic crystals, or even transplanted from one body to another with no ill effects, but they are susceptible to weapons fire and exotic forms of radiation. When a Transformer's body can no longer support its spark, it is "extinguished" and the Transformer is considered dead. As long as the spark is intact, however, it is possible to repair a Transformer, re-implant its spark, and effectively bring them back from the dead.
