Described as being "like the wind", Sonic is easygoing and honest, but also impatient and short-tempered. He possesses a strong sense of independence and justice, despises oppression, and is loyal to his friends. His many adventures have earned him many titles, allies, and foes, and made him a celebrated hero. However, he remains indifferent to his fame, preferring to live on his own terms. Sonic loves going on adventures, helping others out, and nature. He has a very strong sense of justice, being supportive of all human rights across all societies, but fights for the ideal of freedom rather the name of the law. Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur that covers most of his body, and peach skin on his arms, muzzle, insides of his ears and front torso. He has small, triangular ears on his head, six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back, a short tail, and two conjoined eyes. Despite his love for the outdoors, he enjoys quieter activities, such as reading on rainy days. Sonic has a calm and carefree demeanor but can be impatient, impulsive and short-tempered. He can be reckless and quick to act before thinking, acting before thinking and ignoring others' warnings. He never stays in one place for long and always seeks his next challenge, viewing life as a never-ending series of adventures. He is motivated by personal entertainment, indifferent to his fame, and will always do what he sees as correct, even if it means trouble or being despised by others. Sonic holds everyone to the same level as himself, but can often appear rude, specially to authorities. Sonic often makes quips and jokes to lighten the mood and will take any opportunity to do so. He is also very competitive, never holding back when pitted against others in a test of skills and abilities. Sonic loves nature and scenic views, and detests environmental pollution as a result. Additionally, he enjoys cool music and frequently breakdances, incorporating such moves in his attacks. Always prepared to put his life on the line to protect others, be they friends or civilians, Sonic is a carefree spirit and a fearless daredevil at heart. He is driven by his own personal code of justice that compels him to respond to any form of evil, no matter how great or how overwhelming its threat is.

Described as an antihero, Shadow is portrayed as having noble intentions and a compassionate heart, but is standoff-ish with the people he encounters and often willing to fight anyone who comes in the way of his objective. His solemn demeanor and antagonistic traits put him at ideological odds with Sonic, though the two have a begrudging respect for each other and frequently team up for the greater good. Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik through genetic engineering. His creation was part of an experiment, "Project Shadow", meant to cure his granddaughter Maria from a deadly illness. While Shadow and Maria formed a strong bond, the United Federation government and a military organization, the Guardian Units of Nations (GUN), deemed him a threat. GUN raided the Space Colony ARK on which Maria and Shadow lived, killing the former as she sent Shadow to Earth in an escape pod. Shadow was later recovered by GUN and placed in suspended animation. Maria's death traumatized Shadow, who vowed to keep his promise to her that he would protect the world from danger. Shadow can choose to help GUN, Sonic and his friends, Eggman, or the Black Arms. Shadow recovers from his amnesia and learns the truth about his past, including that Gerald created him using Black Doom's DNA. Black Doom uses that in an attempt control him, but Shadow stands up to him and ultimately defeats him. After the battle, Shadow chooses to put the past behind him and move on. Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik through genetic engineering. He is the final result of Project Shadow, a government experiment that was only completed by infusing Shadow with the DNA of the alien Black Doom. Shadow remained in stasis for decades until he was freed by Gerald's grandson, Dr. Eggman. Fueled by vengeance, Shadow fought Sonic and friends until his true memories of Maria returned, inspiring him to save the world from Gerald's doomsday plot. However, Shadow fell to Earth and lost his memories in the process. Shadow could only learn the truth of his existence once he faced the Black Arms invasion of Earth. He has fought for Maria's wish of peace ever since, acting as a dark hero who protects the Earth and its inhabitants. The grim and uncaring disposition he puts on is not entirely accurate considering the lengths he goes to save others including even sacrificing his own life. In contrast to his words, Shadow acts in a way that ultimately protects others. Deep down he cares about those around him, only hiding his more caring side to keep himself shielded and distant. He is still shaken by the death of Maria, which is mostly why he keeps to himself; he does not want to become close to anyone else for fear of losing them like he did Maria. Shadow is, bluntly put, a brooding loner. He usually acts with a cool and businesslike indifference, only occasionally showing his vulnerable side. He is rarely seen with others for an extended period of time and usually distances himself from essentially everyone as a natural introvert. He is usually blunt and does not speak much, but he always knows exactly what to say in combat. He is a black-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle and small and triangular ears with tan canals. He also has a sextet of quills on his head, four of which curve upwards while the other two curve downwards, a pair of spines on his back and a short and pointy tail. He has red stripes on each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes and on his arms and legs. Shadow's quills are pimarily black, featuring red streaks. These colors may derive from his origin as being developed using biological samples from Black Doom, whose body is similar in color.
