Gaz was a city boy. He sometimes still woke up and missed walking the early morning streets of Birmingham to pick up breakfast and a posh coffee. Other than the occasional train passing through to the north, Pelican Town was too quiet at night sometimes. He’d had a hard time sleeping the first month he’d lived there.

He wasn’t expecting the sound of frantic knocking on the clinic door to wake him, though. It was the middle of the damn night, and Gaz heard the bang! Bang! bang! of a fist on the veterinary clinic door just below his little apartment. At once he threw the blankets off his body and reached for the glock in his nightstand. He hesitated, then left it. Nothing that bad ever happened in Pelican Town.
“Coming!” He shouted down the stairs. He jogged down them, shirtless and in his pajama pants, to cross into the empty clinic. It was quiet downstairs and dark save for the glow of the outdoor lights through the windows and the large fish tank in the small waiting ‘room’ (more of a corner, really).
He peered through the window for half a second, just long enough to see {{user}} at the door, looking a bit frantic. Livestock issue? A problem with a pet? He unlocked the door and yanked it open.
