1. #1Special Region (Overview)

Keys: Special Region · Secondary: other side of the Gate, fantasy world

The Special Region is a medieval fantasy world connected to modern-day Earth (specifically Tokyo, Japan) via a mysterious magical Gate that appears in Ginza on August 19, 20XX. It features diverse landscapes including forests, mountains, deserts, and oceans, inhabited by humans, demihumans, elves, dwarves, and mythical creatures like dragons, ogres, and wyverns. Magic exists here, wielded by mages, and gods like Hardy (goddess of the underworld) influence events. The region is ruled by the Saderan Empire, but includes independent tribes and kingdoms. The Gate's existence causes interdimensional issues, such as world drift, threatening both realms if not resolved. Resources like rare metals and food are abundant, drawing interest from Earth nations.

2. #2The Gate (Overview)

Keys: Gate · Secondary: portal, interdimensional gate

A large, ancient portal initially opened by the goddess Hardy and stabilized by Imperial mages. It appeared in Tokyo's Ginza district, allowing invasion by the Saderan Empire's forces, leading to the Ginza Incident. The Gate connects Earth to the Special Region, enabling travel between worlds. It poses risks like cataclysmic disruptions if not closed properly. In the story, the JSDF secures and uses it for expeditions, diplomacy, and resource extraction. A prequel novel, Gate: Zero, details the initial defense at Ginza.

3. #3Gods and Magic (Overview)

Keys: gods · Secondary: Emroy, Hardy, magic

The Special Region's pantheon includes Hardy (goddess of death and the underworld, often depicted as a young girl with immense power) and Emroy (god of war and death). Magic is a real force, used by mages for spells like fireballs, barriers, and teleportation. Apostles like Rory Mercury serve Hardy and possess immortality and superhuman strength. Magic contrasts with Earth's technology, leading to "magic vs. modern weaponry" conflicts.

4. #4Ginza Incident (Overview)

On August 19, 20XX, the Gate opens in Ginza, Tokyo, and Saderan Empire forces (knights, wyvern riders, mages) invade, causing chaos, deaths, and abductions. The JSDF (Japan Self-Defense Forces) repels them in a fierce battle, capturing the Gate. This event sparks the series' conflict, with JSDF entering the Special Region to pursue invaders and secure resources.

Casualties: Hundreds dead on both sides.

5. #5JSDF Expedition (Overview)

Key events include rescuing refugees, battling bandits, and diplomatic negotiations.

6. #6Imperial Civil War (Overview)

Keys: Imperial civil war · Secondary: Zorzal coup, peace negotiations

The protagonist of the series, Itami is a 33-year-old otaku and JSDF soldier. After successfully escorting hundreds of citizens to safety during the attack on Ginza, Itami is promoted to the rank of first lieutenant and tasked to investigate the world on the other side of the Gate. He is a certified JSDF Ranger and Special Forces commando (although this only occurred due to his superiors' futile attempts to discipline him), and while he is notable for being a slacker and a fast runner from trouble, he is honest and compassionate and can be quite capable when under stress.

He is also later rendered immune to bodily harm due to a contract Rory Mercury makes with him, in exchange for him becoming her servant upon his death. With his heroic acts during the battle of Ginza and in the world beyond the Gate, he also becomes a role model for his fellow JSDF soldiers and his friends in Alnus Town.

During her first visit to Japan to meet with several officials, Piña develops an obsession with yaoi dōjinshi and later has her Rose Knights translate more of them for her to read. Brilliant and inquisitive, Lelei quickly learns the Japanese language and becomes the interpreter/translator for Itami's party. Her presence and status as an Apostle are also a great help to Itami's group in establishing social relations within the Special Region. Her only major weakness is her fear of going underground, due to her dislike for Hardy, the Special Region's goddess of the underworld who desires Rory as her bride. After the dragon is vanquished, and after learning that the Apostle of Hardy was responsible for its rampage, she renounces her faith in Hardy, changes her name to Yao Ro Dushi (ヤオ・ロゥ・デュッシ, Yao Rō Dusshi) (with "Ro" in reverence of Rory Mercury, who came to the aid of her people) and offers herself to Itami as a slave.

Unlike the other three girls in Itami's company, she isn't as relentless in pursuing his affections, but she is just as perplexed about his seemingly indifferent attitude about their relationship, especially since her penchant for bad luck keeps her self-esteem low and she regards Itami as a pillar of support.
