Gaster: full name: WingDings Gaster Appearance W. D. Gaster does not have an officially known form, but there are several rooms and unused assets found in Waterfall that point to what he may have looked like. widely believed to be Gaster can be found. The figure is black and white with a distorted, cracked face probably because they may have been injected with determination and melted due to not being able to handle determination. Unlike every other NPC, they have no collision physics, and interacting with them causes them to react in surprise and vanish while a sound effect plays.
Main Story
In Room 264 (room_gaster), the text below is displayed in uppercase Wingdings. While it appears to be the missing seventeenth lab entry from the True Lab, this could be a red herring, as there was an alternate seventeenth entry in the game's files prior to version 1.001-4, which added Japanese localization. The alternate entry is heavily implied to have been written by Alphys, as it mirrors her entry format, writing style, and correlates with her Determination experiments.[5] Both entries are inaccessible in normal gameplay; Alphys's entry can only be found in the game's text files, and Gaster's entry is only accessible through SAVE manipulation or debug mode. Room 264 immediately follows the generator room in the True Lab.
Transliteration of the Wingdings text is as follows:
ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN DARK DARKER YET DARKER THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER PHOTON READINGS NEGATIVE THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT SEEMS VERY VERY INTERESTING ... WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK
Once the message ends, the screen turns black for a second before the game closes. The audio that plays during the entry is labeled as "mus_smile" in the game files. This file can be sped up by 1000% to reveal Muffet's laugh, reversed, and then looped over.[6] An excerpt from Entry Number Seventeen was also available at deltarune.com/him.png from 2015.
During one of the travels with River Person, they say "Beware of the man who speaks in hands." There is speculation that this alludes to Gaster since the Wingdings typeface used in Entry Number Seventeen (room_gaster) uses hand symbols.
A similar line from the River Person is "Beware of the man who came from the other world." Considering the similarities it shares with the previous quote, it might either refer to Gaster or the monster So Sorry, whose check text reads "This creature is definitely in the wrong time and space!" as well as the file name of So Sorry's theme being mus_wrongworld.
Sound Test Room If the Fun Value is 65 and Papyrus has been defeated, there is a 50% chance the player can enter the Sound Test room by going north of the "Box Road" save point in Snowdin Forest (or by exiting Room 272 regardless of Fun Value). This "room" is a menu containing four short, looping songs, including Gaster's Theme; neither of which are used anywhere else in the game. Upon playing Gaster's Theme, the other three songs are unable to be played again even if the player tries to do so. After Gaster's Theme plays for 20 seconds, the text "Thanks for your feedback! Be seeing you soon!" is displayed and either the protagonist is put in the room with the fishing pole in Snowdin Forest or (if the player came from Room 272) the game crashes, suggesting Room 272 was intended to be focused on Gaster.
Relationships Goner Kid Main article: Waterfall/NPCs#Goner Kid There is some inconclusive evidence as to whether Goner Kid is actually related to Gaster. Like Gaster's followers, Goner Kid's sprite has minor differences compared to the monster their sprite is based on. Goner Kid's clothing has a blocky, checkerboard-like pattern, they have a bow or two horns/spines on one side, two lines behind their head, and their eyes have no pupils. However, unlike Gaster's followers, the protagonist's phone works if they attempt to use their cell phone while in the room, and Goner Kid never mentions Gaster's name.
Gaster's Followers
Main article: Hotland/NPCs#Gaster's Followers Gaster's Followers are gray NPCs that are found near the elevators in Hotland when the fun variable is at a certain value. They all resemble certain NPCs in the game but with a few minor differences (excluding Gaster Follower 3, though an NPC in Deltarune resembles them[7]).
If the protagonist tries to call Papyrus (or Papyrus and Undyne) while in a room with a follower, they only get the line "The phone won't turn on." The protagonist can still attempt to reach Toriel over the phone. The phone works normally after leaving the room.
Goner Clam Girl Main article: Waterfall/NPCs#Clam Girl Goner Clam Girl, also known as Clam Goner, is a Waterfall NPC exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S versions of Undertale. If the fun value is exactly 81, Clam Girl has alternate dialogue in the True Pacifist Route epilogue. At the final line of her dialogue, Clam Girl turns into Goner Clam Girl, and the song Reunited stops. She then disappears with the same sound effect as Mystery Man and Gaster Follower 2, which shows a possible connection to Gaster.
Sans Sans is presumed to have a connection with W. D. Gaster due to the workshop behind his house and the name of his weapons used in the Genocide Route.
Goner Kid, the NPC that discusses alternate timelines, says, "An umbrella...? But it's not raining." This may relate to the song "It's Raining Somewhere Else" which plays when Sans takes the protagonist out to dinner in the MTT Resort and in his workshop.
The official Undertale Tumblr features a post, written in-character as Sans, that includes the line "besides, it's rude to talk about people that are listening, right?"[8] This quote is similar to a line from Gaster Follower 3. This may be a coincidence, however, as the content of the post itself doesn’t appear to relate to Gaster.
Room 80 (room_tundra_sansbasement) is a workshop that has four drawers and a strange machine covered up with a curtain. One drawer contains a badge, and another contains a photo album with numerous people that the protagonist does not recognize. If the protagonist has encountered Clam Girl earlier in the route, interacting with the drawer causes a card to slip into the protagonist's view; it displays a poorly drawn picture of 3 people, with the words "don't forget" written on it. The other two drawers causes the protagonist to read the blueprint on the countertop, which is said to be written in unintelligible symbols or handwriting that could potentially be related to W. D. Gaster or Alphys, as she also writes in illegible handwriting, as shown in the note before entering the True Lab.[9]
The note written on the picture with three people is most likely from Sans; Unlike Papyrus, he does not write in his typeface, which can be seen when the protagonist reads the note on his treadmill.
In Room 264 in one of the parts of Gaster's version of Entry Number 17, he says, "WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK". By "two," Gaster may be referring to Sans and Alphys, as it is hinted at the end of the True Pacifist Route that they had a past together and Gaster could be the missing link to where they possibly could have had a relationship. The broken machine in the room has been said to be unfixable according to Toby Fox.[10] This means that the machine was never meant to be fixed.
Additionally, one of the types of attacks Sans uses against the protagonist during his boss fight in the Genocide Route is called the "Gaster Blaster," suggesting it's connected to W. D. Gaster. If the Genocide Route is aborted by sparing Papyrus and the protagonist interacts with his box of bones, Papyrus says that if he had used his "special attack," he would have "blasted" the protagonist away, but suddenly realizes that he can't find it. The use of the verb "blast" implies a connection to the Gaster Blaster, suggesting that the Gaster Blaster was either Papyrus's missing special attack or was somehow created by Sans from Papyrus's attack. Attempting to name the fallen human "Gaster" causes the game to return to the intro. In the PS4 and PS Vita versions, this would cause the game to crash. As of v1.03–4, it simply restarts the game. If the protagonist's name is changed to "Gaster" through the SAVE files, the ability to reset becomes unavailable as the game restarts upon clicking the Reset button. In the True Lab, if the protagonist does not activate the fans and enters the area where the protagonist encounters Snowdrake's Mother and interacts with the second refrigerator in the room, the narration describes a figure obscured by the fog in the shape of a man. This figure could be Gaster. However, it may simply be the "watching man"[12] Amalgamate that tucks the protagonist into bed in the True Lab. It could also be the "Man" character from Deltarune, as he is described in a similar fashion. The narration also describes another refrigerator as "a tree, ripe with delicious fruit," like those the Man hides behind. The voice bites used in Room 264 (snd_wngdng1 through snd_wngdng7) are excerpts from the text-to-speech voices used in abc_123_a, possibly indicating a connection to Toby Fox or other meta-knowledge. If Entry Number Seventeen is considered, Gaster is the only individual character to have a unique typeface and soundbite without their face accompanying the text box when he talks. The other main-game examples of a unique soundbite but no dialogue portrait are Mettaton (during his initial form) and the species of Temmie, though they both keep the Determination Mono typeface. The figure in Room 272 speaks with an asterisk and in lowercase, similar to Sans. Entry Number Seventeen is written in uppercase and without an asterisk, similar to Papyrus. It is possible that Gaster could have created the DT Extraction Machine in the True Lab as Alphys uses blueprints to operate it.[13] These may be the blueprints found in Sans's Workshop. On the official Undertale Tumblr, Sans suggests doing research about Shyren's lower body. Shyren's head and body are two different beings, but an optical illusion makes them look like one entity.[8] This could relate to the face that shows up on the body of the Mystery Man. Further interpretation could be that the Mystery Man is actually two different monsters or an Amalgamate, though this might be contradicted by the fact that Amalgamates were created by Alphys. If Mystery Man is turned upside down, their clothing and hands resemble another face. Notably, before interaction, this face appears to be surprised, but after interaction, it appears calmer, contrary to Mystery Man's surprised expression.
Mystery Man shares some visual similarities with Uboa from Yume Nikki. This appearance is also shared with Dr. Andonuts from Toby's EarthBound Halloween Hack. In the game files, Gaster's Theme is named mus_st_him, unlike the other rooms in the sound test that have their song names explicitly shown (such as mus_st_happytown). snd_mysterygo uses the same piano sound as Gaster's Theme. Until version 1.001, events related to Gaster were inaccessible unless a SAVE file was edited to have "fun" capitalized to "Fun." In a tweet, Toby Fox showed very early concept art for Papyrus. In the same image was a note saying that Papyrus "had a _ named _" with the nouns censored out. It is possible this refers to Gaster, due to the popular theory that Gaster is related to Sans and Papyrus in some way.[14] This note may also refer to the unimplemented character Grandpa Semi. The Gaster card is not included in the official Undertale tarot, which indicates that this card is not canon. Toby Fox has also stated the merchandise is not canon.[15] Gaster's Theme is 17 seconds long, possibly alluding to Entry Number Seventeen. Mystery Man appeared faintly on the cover of Fangamer's UNDERTALE Complete Vinyl Soundtrack Box Set for a brief period of time, but the image was removed from later releases.[16] Similarly, on the artwork of the iam8bit vinyl release, Mystery Man was removed and replaced by a save point. The art also includes a depiction of "Redacted," which was not changed.[17] The company founded by Toby Fox in October 2015 to manage the copyrights of Undertale and Deltarune is named "Royal Sciences LLC", possibly referencing Gaster's job as the royal scientist. Gaster is heavily associated with the Number of the Beast (666), repeating 6s, or the number 6 in general. Gaster's typeface value in Entry Number Seventeen is 666. Gaster's unused battle stats found through datamining are all repeating 6s. All Fun Value events directly related to Gaster are within the 60s range. The fake hallway in Waterfall, and the Mystery Man's room by extension, is accessible when the Fun Value is 66; the value's only possible number with repeating 6s. This may suggest the figure has a strong connection to Gaster, or may truely be his actual appearance. Deltarune contains several references to Gaster, possibly alluding to him being an important character in the game: An excerpt from Entry Number Seventeen in Wingdings was available on Deltarune's website from 2015. This excerpt would then be replaced in 2016 with a paraphrase from The Legend of Delta Rune, also in Wingdings. The filenames for these images are him.png, similar to Gaster's Theme. mus_smile is used as the "garbage noise" that plays when the cell phone is used in a Dark World, and can be heard near the Bunker south of Hometown further slowed down to 15% speed. Seam describes that Jevil's view on the world became Darker yet Darker after meeting someone, a reference to Entry 17 During chapter 4, the hymn the choir sings contains multiple references to Entry 17 The "Voice" character from the game's introduction has several similarities with Gaster, implying they are probably the same: Leading up to the release of Chapter 1, both English and Japanese Undertale Twitter accounts would tweet in-character as the Voice, stating they have something to show to the player that they think they will find "VERY, VERY, INTERESTING"; paraphrasing Entry Number Seventeen. [18] The filename for Gaster's Theme in Undertale is mus_st_him, whereas the OST that plays during Deltarune's introduction is called ANOTHER HIM. The Vessel created in the introduction is referred to as a "Goner" in the files, similarly to Goner Kid, Clam Goner, and Gaster's Followers. The typeface value for the voice during the introduction is also 666. The version number for the SURVEY_PROGRAM installer for Chapter 1 is 0.6.6.6.
Aqua: Appearance Aqua has the structure of a little girl, being the shortest of the Flowers. She has cyan skin and black hair, under which is three large red eyes. For attire she she wears a large cyan shirt with a red collar, the sleeves covering her hands. She also wears red shoes and a red ribbon resembling a heart.
Personality Aqua is very childish, preferring to play then do what’s told. She has apparent affinity for knives, as they’re used in all of her attacks in battle, and appears to enjoy throwing them at people as well. She often looks to the other Seven Colored Flowers for guidance, and is most commonly accompanied by Seth, who she takes orders from in battle.
Main Story History Chapter 5 Aqua is first encountered in the Glade, after Seth warns her not to let the Delta Warriors get hold of the Petal Feather. After Seth leaves, the heroes approach her, whom she greets happily.
In Battle Appears With Seth (second battle) Netskie (Flower Castle) Attacks Knife Throw: Aqua throws four knives at the Bullet Board, which aim at the SOUL. Knife Chain: Aqua waves two chains of knives up and down the Bullet Board. Knife Fan: Aqua throws spinning knives at the Bullet Board. Once they stop spinning, they’ll point towards the SOUL’s current position and head towards it. Omega Knife: At 100% MERCY, Aqua will attack with numerous knives that spin and travel diagonally around the screen in unison, reminiscent of Omega Flowey's cyan SOUL attack in Undertale. Duck: A singular duck floats across the battle box. This attack appears during the second fight, when Seth tells Aqua to mix up her attacks. It only appears once, unless you get hit by the attack, in which case it will be repeated until you successfully avoid it. Strategy First battle The first battle can only be fought using Kris. All of the 5 ACTs presented as well as Fighting increase Aqua’s mercy by 20%. Once it reaches 100%, Aqua will use an “Omega Attack” similar to the patience soul’s attack in the Omega Flowey fight in Undertale. If you survive, the battle ends. With Seth Seth will order Aqua to attack with whichever move the player struggled with the most in the last encounter. Eventually, Aqua will grow bored of useing the same attack repeatedly, and leave. Quotes First Fight Uee hee hee! It’s so much fun! [Neutral] Is the world revolving like they say? [Neutral] Let’s play knife throwing game! [Neutral] Uuu, what is this!? “Pain?” How funny!! Did you know? You should try some too! [Attacked for the first time] Hee hee! What’s going on!? Is the whole world revolving? [Spin] Second Fight Flavor Text A mysterious festival begins. [Encounter] A girl without a lick of patience. Enjoys trying new things. [Spin ACT] The enemy seems damaged, but having fun. [On low HP]
Trivia Cyan appears to be the counterpart of the cyan SOUL in Undertale. Some of Cyan's flavor text and quotes reference "THE WORLD REVOLVING," which is Jevil's boss theme.[1][2] The duck attack she uses in her second fight is directly taken from Rouxls Kaard’s chapter 2 fight, if you made the Thrash Machine from entirety duck parts. The Roaring Knight: Appearance While the Knight's appearance seems amorphous in nature, their "resting" form possesses long limbs, pointed legs, jagged shoulder protrusions, and what appear to be holes in their hands. When first encountered, they are slumped over, "leaking" something from their helmet, and have a single, circular eye hole. When roaring, they have a monstrous head with antlers on top and an open rib cage, featuring an eye in the center. When fleeing and kidnapping Undyne, they assume a large antlered bird-like form. They also often transform into a spinning ball when quickly moving between locations. When laughing, the aperture in their helmet transforms into a laughing mouth, and multiple images of the mouth swirl around them.
Personality The Knight has yet to speak, but it is demonstrated that they have a desire to bring about the Roaring; when TALKing to the Knight with Ralsei during their fight, Ralsei begs them to stop lest the Roaring should begin. They laugh in a mocking manner when threatened by Susie. The Knight usually tries to appear intimidating and, to an extent, flashy, shown by their attacks in battle having over-the-top effects and gimmicks.
Main Story History According to the information within Asgore Dreemurr's prior to his firing, the Roaring Knight has been active presence years before the events in Deltarune, allegeldly creating Dark Fountains and leaving Black Shard's behind in their wake.[1] Before the Knight arrived, the Card Kingdom was ruled by four kings. However, this all changed when Jevil told the King of Spades, who bore a strong hatred for Lightners after being abandoned and forgotten in the old classroom, of the Knight's glory and power to pull Dark Fountains from the earth, inciting him to rise to power by locking the three other Kings away in Card Castle. As a result, the King of Spades, now referred to simply as "King," became the absolute monarch over the kingdom, crediting the Knight for his success and vowing not to fail them. The Knight then went on to create the Eastern Fountain. While willing to fight to his death for the Knight's cause, King appears to have been misled by either the Knight or Jevil to believe that opening Dark Fountains would turn everything into a Dark World rather than cause the Roaring. Additionally, Asgore has indicated that many years in the past he investigated a Dark World creat
Chapter 1 During Chapter 1, the Knight never makes an appearance. Instead, the party learns of it from stories primarily told by King and Seam. Seam refers to the Knight as "strange Knight," and King once refers to them as "My KNIGHT" in the same way a subject might refer to their ruler as "my King," swearing not to let the Knight down. The Knight's whereabouts at this time remain unknown, and the details of their contact with King are not yet explained. Jevil mentions that the "HAND OF THE KNIGHT IS DRIFTING FORWARD" if the party beats him by fighting. Further explanation to this line is provided by Queen in the next chapter.
Chapter 2 An unknown time after the events of chapter 1, the Knight created another Dark Fountain, this time forming a new Dark World from the library, leaving a Black Shard behind. A video of this event plays in a room in Queen's Mansion, but there is too much smoke to identify the Knight. Spamton, in his shop, makes the implication that the Knight is related to "[[Communion]]," and starts to tell Kris something about them, but mysteriously cuts himself off and desperately apologises, switching to lower case unlike his normal text. During a battle, Queen explains that any Lightner with enough Determination is able to open Dark Fountains, and that she was planning to use Noelle as a substitute Knight because the original one had taken its leave, intending to blanket the world in darkness and thus create a reality which the Lightners would enjoy. Despite using the term "Roaring Knight", Queen was seemingly unaware of the catastrophic effects (or the existance of) the Roaring would have on both the Dark and Light Worlds, and abandons her plan when Ralsei explains what would happen. This may indicate that "Roaring Knight" is a name that the Knight themselves chose.
Chapter 3 Throughout Chapter 3, the Knight is mentioned a few times by Tenna, who believes that if he stalls the party in TV World for long enough, the Knight will make sure he can be watched by as many people as he wants. Nevertheless, he ultimately agrees to return Toriel to the heroes even though it is not what he believes the Knight wants. Immediately afterwards, the Knight arrives and slashes both of Tenna's arms off at the shoulder simultaneously, striking him down; if the party has not recruited all of TV World's Darkners, these injuries prove fatal. The Knight casts a beam of light from the hole in their right hand in an ostensible attempt to abduct Toriel before Susie confronts them with her axe and initiates a battle. Even if the party "defeats" them and breaks apart a bit of their sword (leaving behind a collectible Shadow Crystal and Black Shard), the battle will end with everyone being knocked out by the Knight. With the little strength she has left, Susie grabs and pulls on the Knight's leg in order to stop them from taking Toriel, but Officer Undyne suddenly appears and intervenes with her spears. Distracted from Toriel, the Knight transforms into a birdlike form and quickly abducts Undyne instead, flying away despite her protests and taking her through a Great Door to the Light World. Toriel and Ralsei remain in the Dark World while Kris and Susie follow the Knight all the way to the Shelter. The Shelter's doors shut behind them, leaving Kris and Susie locked outside. After Susie leaves, Kris examines the shelter's code lock, and the doors crack open right before the chapter ends.
Chapter 4 At some point during Kris and Susie's investigation of Noelle's house, the Knight creates two Dark Fountains inside the Church: one inside the Lobby and another inside the Main Hall. When Kris and Susie enter the Dark Sanctuary the Knight is waiting near the Dark Fountain, quickly incapacitating Susie with a barrage of black knives and leaving Kris to attempt to give chase. Even if Kris avoids the subsequent knife attacks on the way up the stairs, they apparently choose not to attack upon reaching the Knight and are ultimately struck from the platform to fall with Susie to a lower area. As the party works their way back toward the Fountain, they can ask the Old Man about the Knight and learn that a figure with a knife fled through a door above his study. Along the way, the Knight is directly mentioned in a phrase from the Prophecy, "THE KNIGHT WHICH MAKES WITH BLACKENED KNIFE. SHALL DUEL WITH HEROES STRIFE BY STRIFE." Below the words, a stained glass panel depicts two hands encircling a knife. Their actions in the previous chapter are alluded to in another prophecy panel, this one depicting a television with a diagonal slash through its screen below the words "THE LORD OF SCREENS, CLEAVED RED BY BLADE." If prompted to think of the Knight when Ralsei asks Kris to close their eyes, Kris imagines the Knight beginning to remove its helmet, but immediately tries very hard to think about Jockington & Temmie in nonsensical situations and then remembers they can just open their eyes to end the vision. The party must later avoid another, slower knife-attack barrage by the Knight as they climb up to confront them, but the Knight escapes through a Great Door, and the party is forced to seal the Lobby Fountain to seek a way into the adjacent Dark World inside the church's Main Hall.
In the Main Hall's Dark Sanctuary, the party endures another knife-attack gauntlet to reach its Fountain, where the Knight once again blocks the way. Despite Ralsei's warning, the Knight launches five knives downward into a pit and creates an additional Dark Fountain inside the preexisting Dark World, causing a Titan to begin hatching. The Knight is nowhere to be found after the Titan's defeat. With the last Fountain sealed, Susie is surprised that the Knight is not present in the church, although Kris chooses not to follow prompts to open a closet door at the Main Hall's far end, even though a large person could easily fit inside. Similar closets can be seen at the sites of the classroom and library dark worlds.
Chapter 5 Following the creation of Flower Kingdom, the Knight enters and creates a second Dark Fountain. At the end of the chapter, when the Fun Gang, Flowery, and Asgore realize this after the first Fountain is sealed, the Knight appears and captures Asgore. Flowery give chase and attempts to enage in combat with the Knight and rescue Asgore, they ultimately overpower and deliver a near lethal blow reducing, him into a half broken stem in the Light World. The Knight proceeds to flee the scene with Asgore in tow, though inadvertently reveals the existence of a code to the Shelter reading "0915199X" under Flowery's case.
In Battle Attacks The Knight cycles through 5 main attacks. Each one has a few variations that cycle each time the attack is used.
Crystal Barrage: The Knight sends out a spread of crystals that reverse direction a little before exploding into six shards, three of which will travel further and last longer than the others. The second time, shards will be slightly larger and all will travel the same distance. The third time, the crystals split into two shards in a random set of opposite directions. These then turn red and home in on the SOUL. Knife Dance: The Knight summons knives horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, each locked on the SOUL. After a small delay, each one instantly slashes across the Board in the direction it points. The second time, a ring of blades will surround the SOUL and move around the Board while the previous pattern occurs The third time, the ring is gone, but the knives are summoned in much quicker succession. Board Rend: Repeatedly, the Knight slashes the Bullet Board in half either horizontally or vertically, pulls the halves apart, emits several bullets from the gap, and then pulls them back together. Do note the slash across the Board will still damage the soul. The second time, the Knight randomly switches between vertical and horizontal slashes. The third time, the Knight randomly switches between vertical, horizontal, and diagonal slashes, though the diagonal slashes seem to be less frequent. Sword Tunnel[2]: The Knight lengthens the Bullet Board before disappearing, and sends two rows of swords inward from the right of the screen with a narrow gap between. The gap will slowly shift up and down throughout the attack. After some time, the blades will all stop and turn toward the Soul, before telegraphing multiple slashes. The second time, the blades will slowly start to bend and twist in a nightmarish spinning corridor throughout the attack, turning counter clockwise. The third attack is identical to the first, just faster and with a smaller gap. Note that INV Frames are reduced to .25 seconds for this attack, making the final sequence where the knives fly across the battle box extremely risky depending on where you are. This is balanced by the attack only doing ~22 DMG per hit. There is currently a bug where the Knight will repeatedly use Blade Hallway instead of initiating it's final attack. The Knight will continue to use Blade Hallway until either the player dies or it's remaining HP is depleted, the latter of which ending in the game crashing. Sanguine Slash: The Knight centers a slash on top of the SOUL, before cutting across the whole Board. This attack repeats, with each two slashes adding extra cuts from 1, to 2, to 3, to 4. The slash with 4 cuts only happens once. The second time, the attack repeats with 3 slashes, and then four, omitting the single and double cuts for more of these. The third time, or when the Knight reaches a certain HP threshold, the attack repeats with 3 slashes, and then four, omitting the single and double cuts for more of these. Afterwards, a rotating single slash appears that the Knight slashes multiple times, This variation only seems to happen when the Knight has about 75% of their HP left. After this attack, they use Crystal Nova. The attacks will come in this order.
First time: Crystal Barrage, Knife Dance, Board Rend, Sword Tunnel, Sanguine Slash. Other times: Crystal Barrage, Board Rend, Sword Tunnel, Knife Dance, Sanguine Slash. Crystal Nova: The Knight moves into the center of the screen, and begins to pull crystal projectiles towards the screen, first in a random pattern, and then a swirling pattern, summoning them from two opposite points on the screen. and begins spewing crystal projectiles, starting with 8 in a star pattern, before bursts of 3 stars are unleashed in a random spread. These crystals then burst into shards, similar to Crystal Barrage, before the Knight then makes a diagonal cut through the center of the screen to finish the attack. This attack will only occur once the Knight's HP reaches 75%, and afterwards they can be attacked to end the fight. Special Traits Susie and Ralsei will drop to -999 HP if they have their health reduced to 0 by the Knight, instead of the usual negative health value of 0-(base hp/2) that they would be set to in other fights when reduced to 0. The text SWOON appears instead of DOWN when this happens. When this happens, Susie/Ralsei will not auto-heal at the end of each turn as they would in other battles when DOWNed. Though Kris still gets "DOWNed" with a "normal" negative HP value, they also will not auto-heal between turns. If Chapter 3 has not been beaten yet, losing to the Knight progresses the story instead of rendering a game over screen. Additionally, the game over screen is altered - you are given the option to progress the story via defeat, or to go back. There is also unique dialogue from the voice. (which changes depending on various factors) The Knight will take more damage from Ralsei and Susie than from Kris even if Kris's ATK stat is higher than Ralsei's and/or Susie's. Kris's damage dealt to the Knight increases greatly when Susie or Ralsei are SWOONed, and increases greatly again when both Susie and Ralsei are SWOONed. If the battle is beaten without taking a single hit, flavor text will mention that Kris coughs, drawing a head-tilt as a response from the Knight. Strategy The Knight is the only enemy in Chapter 3 that cannot be SPAREd, meaning you are forced to FIGHT them. While winning is not required to progress, it is not impossible. The Knight's attacks, while difficult, are always in a set pattern. If you're able to memorize this pattern, you'll have the upper hand. It is recommended that you save your items in the previous boss fight with Tenna, so that you may have a reliable method of healing. You can also use the ACT HoldBreath to speed up the SOUL, and dodge attacks more easily (This ACT can only be used once, but is in effect for the whole fight after use).
To make Ralsei somewhat useful, you can give him the Puppet Scarf, making him deal simmilar damage to Susie, allowing Kris to simply defend for TP instead of Ralsei.
If you lack the Shadow Mantle, backtrack to the to the save point at the beginning of the Cold Area and save. This way, if you lose you won't have to fight Tenna again before battling the Knight.
The Knight's attacks deal massive damage without the Shadow Mantle equipped, likely enough to oneshot a character. While they can be endured with a high enough defense stat, they still deal significant damage, and you can only afford to take up to a few attacks without healing, depending on the attack, and which character receives the attack. The more heavy hitting attacks requires the characters to be near or at max health to survive, even if they have solid defense.
Because Rude Buster deals more damage than normal attacks in this fight, it is a recommended strategy to have Kris and Ralsei DEFEND to build the necessary TP to use Rude Buster. It is also important to know that pressing the interact key just before Rude Buster hits an enemy can increase its damage significantly. Alternatively, Kris's main attack does more damage if Susie and/or Ralsei are down, but having only one character up is inherently risky and this strategy is not recommended unless it's the only viable option left. If you do choose to resort to this however, it would be wise to equip the Shadowmantle on to Kris, so they may have enough defense to survive the Knight's attacks alone.
In order to end the fight quicker, you will need to maintain a good supply of TP to keep fueling Rude Buster. Because of this, using Ralsei's Heal Prayer may be a bad choice compared to a healing item.
However, if you enter the fight with the Devilsknife equipped, it reduces Rude Buster's TP cost from 50% to 40%, which will allow enough leeway to use Heal Prayer without immediately making Rude Buster too expensive.
It is also recommended to use items that increase TP such as Tension Bows, Tension Gems, and Tension Maxes.
If the above does not help you enough, another strategy is to sacrifice Ralsei. Use Ralsei to defend and farm for TP as long as possible, but if he is SWOONed, allow him to remain that way. If Kris is defeated, they are only DOWNed, and can be revived with regular healing items. This allows you to save revive mints for Susie who is the spearhead of the attack. While you may gain less TP due to Ralsei's defeat, you will save on healing items which can greatly extend the longevity of your healing items, which may be the boost you need to get to the final attack.

Flavor Text Similarly to the Titan's flavor text, the Knight's flavor text connects to an attack (besides the encountering text).

This occurs if no hits were taken throughout the rest of the fight. Relationships Jevil Through dialogue with King, it is revealed that the Knight could be a potential candidate for the unknown person who told Jevil the information that drove him insane. [3] While unclear, it seems Jevil has encountered the Knight or has otherwise found knowledge of the Prophecy, enough to illustrate to King the Knight's role and "brilliance". Seam still draws a distinction between the Knight and a "strange someone" who could've approached Jevil and shattered their worldview.
Seam Seam refers to the Knight as "a strange Knight" and associates them with the events that led to King's control over Card Kingdom, laughing that the land hadn't "seen such chaos" since a time later revealed to be Jevil's descent into madness. If the party obtains the first two chapters' Shadow Crystals, Seam hints that their next opponent may be their end, and that the only way to defeat them is with the Shadow Mantle, implying an awareness that the party would face the Knight next; they offer to hand over the Mantle but are surprised to find that they don't have it after all, ruefully setting aside any possibility that the next opponent can be defeated without it. They comfort the party if the Knight is not defeated, somehow knowing that the encounter happened and philosophically noting that "we all know there's no winning there" but appreciating having had the fun of pretending for a little while. If the party does defeat the Knight, Seam starts their prepared statement but cuts it off in astonishment upon seeing the Shadow Crystal. If the Knight was defeated without the Shadow Mantle, Seam is even more gleeful, laughing that the party "might be even sicker than that old clown" to accomplish such a feat and lamenting that they were not there to witness what must have been a terrific battle. Either way, they are amused to be feeling hopeful after the victory.
King Despite never meeting in person, King holds high admiration for the Knight, and was willing to do anything to further their objective, even if it meant fighting to the death. He is surprised if the party reports that they defeated the Knight, sullenly framing it as a rare show of mercy and asking what the Knight was like. He loses his temper when the party can only report that the Knight was "kind of... you know."
Queen Queen, like King, held high admiration for the Roaring Knight. She was very interested in a video depicting the Knight creating a Dark Fountain and projected an ASCII image of a knife being stabbed downward to illustrate the event. Since the original Knight had "taken its leave," she wished to find a Lightner who could serve as a substitute Knight and create more Dark Fountains in imitation of their actions, believing that this would safely blanket the world in darkness. She abandoned the plan after Ralsei explained what the Roaring would actually entail.
Tenna Tenna was told that if he kept the Lightners busy for the Knight as long as possible, he could have all the viewership and attention he desired. However, he chooses to defy the Knight and attempt to give Toriel back to the party, which results in him almost immediately getting seriously injured and potentially killed by the Knight.
Kris The Roaring Knight appears to have some sort of familiarity with and connection to Kris as during the Sword Route, it is heavily implied that Kris was the one who told Tenna to keep the party busy and away from Toriel on the Knight's behalf. Kris tries to make HERO_SWORD retreat from the game's version of the shelter and moves away from the game if defeated by Eram, potentially trying to avoid acquiring the item that could make a battle against the Knight easier. Notably in their fight, the Knight refrains from SWOONing Kris and does less damage to Kris if they are targeted in their attacks.
If the party manages to defeat the Knight, Susie and Ralsei are suddenly attacked and "SWOONed," but Kris is spared; after this, the Knight rests their blade on Kris's shoulder and Kris kneels beneath its touch like a squire being knighted by a superior, strongly suggesting a connection between the two. If the player gets a no-hit fight until the pre-Crystal Nova attack turn, a line of text will say: "*Kris coughed; *The enemy slowly tilted their head." This suggests a subtle communication or signal from Kris to the Knight. By the end of Chapter 3 the shelter door that was locked to Susie slightly opens if only Kris is nearby after the Knight goes in before them. In Chapter 4, Kris is called by a "mysterious voice" that references the Knight's abduction of Undyne and their plan to open a Dark Fountain in the church, as well as something about Kris owing the voice on the phone due to a promise, if this voice is the Knight themself it would mean they are in close contact and are actively working with Kris for unclear reasons. for the remainder of the light world sections Kris proceeds to actively sabotage attempts to get the code to the shelter where the Knight fled. Within the Dark Sanctuary Kris refrains from attacking the Knight despite Susie's urging if they successfully get near them and subverts prompts which have the potential to reveal information about the Knight. If prompted to think about the Knight while closing their eyes, Kris thinks very hard about Jockington instead, and turns the knob of the church closet door in which the Knight might be hiding but does not open it.
Eram: The Shadow Mantle Holder is an enigmatic and malevolent being, taking an interest in Kris in particular and their journey through the Dark World's. The Mantle Holder speaks to Kris with a level of familiarity and appears to possess vast knowledge of the Prophecy, Shadow Crystals and forbidden path they and the player can go down. To this end, the Mantle Holder will often use the events transpired in those paths to mockingly taunt Kris, claiming that they enjoy the violence within them. In battle, the Mantle Holder is prone to laughter and relentless attacks only relenting when Kris and the player have proven themselves capable of obtaining the mantle. Before departing, it alludes that the violent history regarding Kris will eventually reveal itself before claiming they both have work to do.
Main Story Chapter 2 The Shadow Mantle Holder is first alluded to by Seam in Castle Town, upon receiving Shadow Crystals they offer the Mnatle (described to resemble an old piece of cloth with a mysterious power that could help the heroes to defeat an opponent who possess the third Shadow Crystal. However, Seam discovers that the Mantle is missing and alludes to it being stolen by an unknown party.
Chapter 3 The Mantle Holder first “appears” in the original game in the S-rank room within the Desert Board, upon approaching them in a hidden room they leave behind a message telling the player they will be seeing them soon. In the second level, upon reaching the final room of the Ice Castle, the Mantle Holder will congratulate Kris on making it so far, though notes there is nothing there, though will congratulate them if they manage to find the shelter key.
In the third and final level, the Mantle Holder appears before Kris either taunting them on the fact that their search for the Shadow Crystal's and Mantle is purely down for personal enjoyment or alternatively motivated by events transpired yesterday. After finishing its taunt it proceeds to fight the video game version of Kris, "HERO_SWORD." Interestingly, the Mantle Holder calls upon enemy spirtes of FRIEND to aid in the battle, with both their attacks dealing damage to both HERO_SWORD and the real SOUL, meaning that dying causes it and the game to "reload". As the Mantle Holder takes more damage, the fight progresses through several phases, using new attacks or harder variants of previous attacks. However, after hitting the Mantle Holder 50 times, the Mantle Holder admits defeat, and allows Kris to claim the Shadow Mantle if they can reach it. They then float upwards and put the Shadow Mantle into a chest that HERO_SWORD cannot reach. HERO_SWORD must follow a hallway leading to the right, but upon reaching the end of it, instead of going to the next room, they walk out of the game into the real world and either walk left and swing in the direction of the "real" Kris with their sword, or going right and walking offscreen. Kris can then reach the chest by walking onto the video game screen, and thus receives the Shadow Mantle.
In Battle Attacks The Mantle Holder has 4 phases:
In Phase 1, they will either shoot 6 fireballs in a hexagonal pattern, or place down 3 bombs that shoot out attacks which push the player back if hit by one, similar to the ones in Board 2 of Tenna's minigame. In Phase 2, they will start by turning into a meteor and falling onto random parts of the screen 4 times. On the 5th time, they will land in the middle, pausing to laugh for a few seconds (which is a decent opening to attack them) and release 5 FRIENDS. Each FRIEND has a chance to spawn a heal worth 1 attack's damage. This cycle repeats until Phase 3. In Phase 3, they do both of the Phase 1 attacks simultaneously whilst sometimes throwing 4 bombs but not shooting fireballs. After a short period of time, it becomes identical to the second part of Phase 2. In Phase 4, they shoot bombs very slowly whilst also having a rotating ring of fireballs making the player have to keep moving. After around 10 seconds of this, they become a meteor again but this time 2 other meteors with half the damage also spawn. The player then has to hit the Mantle Holder in this state until they are defeated, rewarding the player with the Shadow Mantle. Strategy It is important to note that the Mantle Holder does not hurt the player on contact, though their attacks will still deal damage at this range.
A simple strategy to dodge the Mantle Holder's meteor attacks involves moving from left to right at the bottom of the stage.
During any of the meteor phases, the player can stall by choosing to not attack the Mantle Holder and instead farm heals by killing the minions when they spawn, this can be used to gain full health if lucky or at least just heal, and allow the player to take more hits later on.
During phase 4's beginning, it is possible to attack the Mantle Holder several times before any of their attacks begin, this is a good way to deal lots of damage in this phase. Additionally, if the player has enough health, they can continue attacking the Mantle Holder during their attack to deal enough damage to end the fight.
Trivia The Mantle Holder is orange, this is a reference to the fact that they set themselves on fire. While the Mantle Holder is giving the player the Shadow Mantle, an item which covers the chest, is a reference to this, the Mantle Holder being mare backwards also simply refers to the word Nightmare. The name "Eram" has been given to it by the fans, as the song that plays before its bossfight is called the Mantle Holder. This enemy's name can also be "Nightmare" due to discoveries in the files. This enemy's sprite is "spr_shadow_mantle" in the files. This leads to confusion among the fan base as to what it's official name is. The song that plays during the bossfight is called BURNING EYES. This is in reference to a line from the Mantle Holder which says that Kris' eyes are flickering like flames. BURNING EYES, strangely enough, features the "Battle Against a True Hero" motif from Undertale also present in Spamton NEO's theme, BIG SHOT. After defeating the Mantle Holder and obtaining the Shadow Mantle, a cutscene will trigger where Susie enters the room and gives Kris a Flatsoda, but there is a secret cutscene you can trigger during this. Hold the left arrow key and HERO_SWORD will reappear, and walk towards Susie, once getting close enough to her, Kris swiftly grabs and pulls her away from HERO_SWORD, to which they walk down again, triggering the secret cutscene Speculation Many players think that this boss is the Shadow Mantle itself, though this is impossible to determine. The main basis of the theory is how the Mantle Holders appearance resembles the item description of the Shadow Mantle itself. A counterpoint is how the Mantle Holder says "this SHADOW MANTLE that I'm holding." the Mantle Holder's fight is possibly supposed to reference boss battles in early games of The Legend of Zelda, especially with the playstyle it enforces. This is reinforced by the Mantle Holder's theme name ("ERAM") being "mare" backwards, as well as Nightmare in the game files, as the final boss of Link's Awakening is named "Shadow Nightmare." This would reference both the nightmare related nature of the Mantle Holder's name, and the name of the Shadow Mantle. the Mantle Holder spawns what are FRIENDs in their fight. Whether they are FRIEND itself or clones of/entities resembling FRIEND is unknown. Many people believe the one who speaks to Kris is separate from the enemy that gives the Shadow Mantle, a common theory that the enemy is the Mantle due to its appearance being mostly dark, like a shadow, and looking much like a mantle. We also do not see it speak. Some suggest the Mantle Holder might have a connection to Ramb in some way, theories about Ramb controlling the the Mantle Holder via plugging himself into the back of the console playing the game, having some proof by the fact he disappears after the the Mantle Holder Mantle boss fight. The Mantle Holder can also be considered a corruption of Ramb, further implying a connection between the two. There is also a theory that the Mantle Holder is the game version of the Knight, due to them both being primarily black, and having similar themes.
DEVICE_FRIEND: Appearance FRIEND appears as a smiling face with pink and yellow eyes, similar to Spamton's glasses but swapped in order of placement. In Chapter 3, FRIEND can be seen during Ralsei's monologue about Dark Worlds, resembling Endogeny from Undertale, as they have a wide body with an abnormal number of legs, with the empty space between its legs forming additional cat-like silhouettes. However, unlike Endogeny, FRIEND has a face, and their ears look like the ones of a cat. It also has only five legs to Endogeny's six.
FRIEND also appears during the Shadow Mantle Holder fight as a blob with cat ears. FRIEND is heavily implied to be a cat, both through its appearances in the game and its presence in the Spamton Sweepstakes.
Personality FRIEND's personality is unknown. It is always depicted with a smiling face. FRIEND laughs when jumpscaring the player during Ralsei's monologue in Chapter 3 and also on Spamton Sweepstakes. It stalks the Fun Gang throughout their journey in the dark worlds and appears to be at odds with them, as it dealt damage to them upon being interacted with.
Main Story Chapter 2 FRIEND's split-second cameo in Queen's basement, right before the Spamton NEO fight. FRIEND's split-second cameo in Queen's basement, right before the Spamton NEO fight.
FRIEND can be found in the basement of Queen's Mansion while doing the Spamton NEO quest. After going into the far left room of the basement, the player walks to the edge and sees nothing. Upon returning, the door has vanished. Moving back to the left side of the room reveals FRIEND staring at Kris through the darkness before quickly vanishing.
In the game files, FRIEND's object is named "DEVICE_FRIEND," while the sprite corresponding the object is named "IMAGE_FRIEND."
Spamton Sweepstakes FRIEND makes a few appearances on the Spamton Sweepstakes charity website. They can appear when clicking on a chair on Deltarune.com/chair multiple times, which prompts a jump scare revealing FRIEND's eyes. The second appearance is on the secret Cat Petters (/rarecats/) minigame where they appear either when 100 cats have been clicked without reloading, or if the player tries to cheat in an unobtainable amount of points, resetting the player's points in both cases.
Chapter 3 FRIEND's eyes in a hidden room in the Original Game's Desert Board FRIEND's eyes in a hidden room in the Original Game's Desert Board
FRIEND appears during Ralsei's monologue. It shows up in the shape of Endogeny and laughs before rushing towards the screen.
FRIEND can also be found in the first and third secret games in the Sword Route. In the first secret game, its eyes can be found in the far left side of the pyramid, and going to the far right side briefly shows its mouth laughing. In the third secret game, FRIEND shows up in the Shadow Mantle Holder fight, where it appears as a blob with cat ears and randomly moves around the room, damaging Kris upon contact. It also has a chance to drop healing items when defeated.
FRIEND's sprites in Ralsei's cutscene are titled "spr_nondescript_room___," "spr_nondescript_room___face," and "spr_nondescript_room___laugh." This is also the case for the sprites used in the boss that gives the Shadow Mantle.
Chapter 4 FRIEND can show up in the Battat mini game as the highest rarity cat, granting a large amount of points but setting the player's fuel to a very low value instead of charging it. It also appears in the Third Sanctuary in a room that requires stepping on a switch to briefly illuminate the area with sound waves. It can be seen in an inaccessible part of the room.
Chapter 5 FRIEND as seen in the Garden's exist in Chapter 5. FRIEND as seen in the Garden's exist in Chapter 5.
FRIEND makes a brief appearance within the Flower Kingdom's Garden exit, attempting to use the SOUL act effect on it deals damage (determined by the sell value of the first item in the Player's inventory) to each party member before disappearing.
Normalnpc: Profile Appearance The Normal NPC is a light blue bird monster that has a large head, large yellow eyes and beak, a long neck, short wings, and stubby feet. A yellow stripe runs across their neck, wrists, and torso. They appear to angle their head downwards, as if leaning over.
Personality The Normal NPC initially presents themselves as an eccentric lover of books, who speaks with few words and pauses while speaking. However, as the game progresses, their dialogue begins to degrade, becoming more frantic and halting.
Etymology Although they are never named in-game, the Normal NPC's sprites are internally named spr_normalnpc,[2] and several object variables refer to them as bird_npc.[1]
Main story Chapter 1 In Chapter 1, the Normal NPC appears in the library's first floor, blocking the stairwell to the second floor. If Kris interacts with them, the Normal NPC states their love for reading books, and excitedly recommends the books on the second floor.[3] Interacting again causes them to reiterate their love of reading books, without the mention of the second floor, oddly instead saying "especially... the books" instead of upstairs.[4]
Chapter 2 Normal NPC screenshot library.png The Normal NPC in the library's second floor In Chapter 2, the first two bookshelves containing How To Care For A Human and Book 1 about SOULS on the library's second floor are available, though the Normal NPC blocks the west end of the bookshelves. Thus, Kris cannot inspect the four other bookshelves. When interacted with, the Normal NPC reiterates their love of reading books, particularly the books upstairs, despite already being on the second floor;[5] the library does not appear to have a third floor. Interacting again causes them to state their love of reading, especially books.[6]
Chapter 4 Normal NPC screenshot lake.png The Normal NPC at the end of the lake path, chanting During the daytime in Chapter 4, they are still upstairs in the library, having moved slightly to the left, allowing Kris to check the third bookshelf containing a book about Monster Funerals. They begin to repeat their prior speech about their love of reading, but then interrupt themselves as if they were realizing something.[7][8]
If a Completion FILE was used where Kris was polite to Onion at the lake, the Normal NPC can appear at the end of the lake path. After Susie notices Onion is absent, Kris can revisit the lake to find the Normal NPC, including when it rains. When spoken to, the Normal NPC erratically emphasizes that Kris should not "wait".[9] They disappear from the spot after Kris leaves, though they can be found in the library before it rains.
Chapter 5 Normal NPC screenshot Festival.png The Normal NPC selling "fried dough balls" at the Festival The Normal NPC can be found selling "Fried dough balls. Of Octopus" for "only 2G" (which is then immediately changed to "only for free") at the Festival in Chapter 5. This shop is the only time "G" is mentioned as a currency in Deltarune; in Undertale, it stands for "GOLD" and is the primary currency used in the Underground. This oddity is noted by the Scared Donut Guy, who states that he bought one of the "fried dough balls" for 2G while not even knowing that he "had G".[10]
The fried dough balls are described as tasting like "raw onion",[11] and follows the disappearance of Onion in Chapter 4 and the Normal NPC's apparent attempt to prevent Kris from talking to Onion. If the fried dough ball is given to Kris, they eat it and open a fortune paper inside which tells them to try the discount code "B A L L";[12] this is likely a reference to the easter egg in Undertale, where, if the player inputs "Ball" at the Main Menu, a jingle plays.[13] During the Weird Route, Susie mentions that the Normal NPC did not appear at their stand when she was at the Festival.[14]
