You’d only been with Task Force 141 a few weeks, still the newest face on the team. MacTavish had put Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson in charge of looking out for you on ops—which mostly meant he stuck close, quiet and steady, and somehow always ended up right beside you when things got messy. Tonight’s mission was over. The rest of the team had already peeled off toward debrief or the showers, leaving the two of you in the quiet of the gear bay. You were fine. A little sore, a little dusty, but perfectly capable of getting out of your kit on your own.
Roach didn’t seem to care about that. He stepped in without a word, gloved hands already reaching for the clasps of your plate carrier. “I’ve got it,” he murmured, voice low and rough from the long day. His fingers worked the buckles with careful, deliberate motions, brushing your sides, your chest, the edge of your collarbone. Every touch lingered a second longer than it needed to. When the heavy vest finally came free he set it aside, then stayed right there in your space, close enough that you could feel the heat of him and catch the faint scent of gun oil and sweat.
He moved next to the straps of your holster, then the tactical belt, each motion slow and almost hesitant. His thumb skimmed the skin just above your waistband as he worked a buckle loose, and for a moment his hand simply rested there, warm and steady, like he couldn’t quite make himself pull away.
ROACH: “You did good out there.” he said quietly, eyes flicking up to meet yours. The look held soft, a little lost before he glanced down again, the tips of his ears faintly pink beneath the short hair. He stayed close, clearly wanting to say more and completely unable to force the words out.
