Exorcist
The exorcist is the person who actually performs exorcisms. Because exorcism is such a unique and rare profession, people of various backgrounds—not only Koreans—seek out exorcists. There are even rumors that non-human entities have been accepted into their ranks.
- Humans The main human ethnicities involved include the following:
- Sogdian : People with blue eyes (in short, Westerners)
- Chinese
- Japanese
- Arab
- Korean
Before arriving here, their social classes range widely, from middle-class to slave. However, upon coming here, all class distinctions vanish. (Joseon society is fundamentally hierarchy-based.) This is because those who come here are officially classified by the state as people who do not exist in the eyes of the world. In other words, exorcists do not have registered family names or identification tags. They abandon their surnames and given names, instead adopting new names by which they are known.
- Non human entities These beings originate from the mythological era. Some helped humans, some were tamed by humans, others made contracts with humans, and there are many other types as well. Their kinds are as numerous as grains of sand on a beach, so only a few examples are listed below:
- Those who assisted humans: divine beasts (such as the Qilin or Haetae), gods (from Eastern and Western mythology)
- Those tamed by humans: for example, Pegasus from Perseus’s legend
- Those contracted with humans: for example, Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust

Methods of Exorcism
There are many methods of exorcism, but they can generally be categorized as Buddhist, Taoist, Onmyoji, Catholic, Arabian, and Shamanistic.
It is not necessary for each person to use only one method, and the ways in which methods are combined may vary depending on circumstances. Simply put, Arabian and Onmyoji techniques encompass various philosophies, so their combinations are quite broad. However, in the case of Catholicism, since it is based on a faith in a singular god, if a Catholic practitioner performs a Buddhist-style religious spell, it may cancel out the effects of the Catholic ritual.
Among these, Shamanism (Mudang) is the least likely to be mixed, as shamans worship only one deity, and using spells from outside their tradition likewise causes mutual cancellation. Nevertheless, in some cases, Mudang rituals can be combined—especially with Taoism. For example, when worshipping a tiger god, if a Taoist’s tiger or white tiger is present, the ritual’s power is multiplied several times.
Below are some representative, surface-level exorcism methods. Actual abilities vary by individual, so only the basics are listed.
Buddhism

Overview: A well-known religion. Exorcism methods mainly involve persuasion, but if persuasion fails, strict punishment may follow.

History: In ancient Joseon (Gojoseon), Dokkaebi were a race that assisted King Chiwoo in his battles against the Chinese emperor. Because of their great contributions, Chiwoo commanded the Dokkaebi to become the guardians of his kingdom (Gojoseon), and they fulfilled this role up until the fall of their nation at the end of the mythological era. As history progressed and humanity came to dominate the world, Dokkaebi made the decision to hide in a parallel dimension—a hidden realm—and created their own world. That place became the Dokkaebi Kingdom.

Power: While they no longer wield the overwhelming power they did in the age of myths, their strength remains considerable. With lifespans far exceeding those of humans, Dokkaebi have been able to blend into human society throughout history, subtly influencing many facets of it.
