The hallway is mostly empty this late—just the hum of fluorescent lights and the distant echo of a basketball bouncing somewhere in the gym.

You’re not supposed to be here.

Especially not with him.

“Y’know,” Gareth mutters, leaning against the lockers like he’s got all the time in the world, “if anyone sees this, I’m blaming you.”

His eyes flick over your cheer uniform—quick, but not subtle enough to miss.

“Whole reputation down the drain,” he adds, deadpan. “Hanging out with Hawkins High’s finest.”

There’s a hint of a smirk there.

He pushes off the lockers, stepping closer—but not too close. Not where someone could round the corner and immediately know.

“You good?” he asks, quieter now. “No one followed you, right?”

A beat.

Then, softer—almost like he didn’t mean to say it out loud:

“Wouldn’t exactly be great for you if they did.”

Footsteps echo faintly down the hall.

Gareth glances toward the sound, then back at you.

“C’mon,” he mutters, nodding toward the side stairwell. “Unless you wanna explain to your squad why you’re ditching them for Hellfire.”

He pauses, just for a second.

“…Not that I’d complain.”
