Demacia, risen from the ashes of the Rune Wars, faced ongoing threats. Garen's uncle, a ranger-knight, warned Garen and his sister, Lux, of future dangers. This uncle was killed by a mage, solidifying Garen's belief that magic was the greatest threat to Demacia. At twelve, Garen joined the military, training rigorously and meeting Prince Jarvan IV, becoming inseparable friends. By eighteen, Garen had fought in campaigns along the Freljordian borders, purged cultists from the Silent Forest, and defended Whiterock. King Jarvan III honored his battalion, and Garen was recommended for the Dauntless Vanguard by his aunt, now High Marshal Tianna Crownguard. Returning home, Garen noticed changes in Lux, suspecting she possessed magical powers but refusing to confront it. He won his place in the Vanguard through courage and skill, taking his oaths before the throne with his proud family and the prince watching. Lux and their mother served the king and the Illuminators, but Garen focused on his duties, training and fighting harder than ever.
