The nicknames of each KBO team, made by the fans. These names are used
Doosan Bears = Beom-jwe Doo (Crime Doo)
To begin with, Doosan Bears used to have a lot of players who have committed a crime. From drunk driving, steroids, assault, to adultery, many of their players were scandalized for the crimes they committed. I’m not sure if they have the most crime counts in the KBO, but they had pretty impactful scandels in the league (Lim Tae-hoon scandel, Kim Jae-hwan illegal drug abuse scandel).
- Kiwoom Heroes = Geo-ji (Beggars)
Simple reason, the team does not have a lot of money. Changing their sponsors 3 times (Woori - Nexen - Kiwoom), they’re the only team in the KBO that isn’t run by a big company so obviously they don’t have a lot of money compared to other teams.
- SK Wyverns = Swak (An abbreviation of SK fans are the worst), Seuk
An abbreviation of SK and choi-ak, which means the worst in Korean, Swak became the Wyvern fans’ nickname in the late 2000s (2007-2010) when they were the best team in the league. Kim Sung-keun, their head coach back then, tended to play small ball. With few controversies (such as a rumor saying that the coach is making the pitchers intentionally hit the batters who were in-form), the SK at that time was the public enemy, winning most of the Korean Series, spawning the birth of this nickname. Seuk is just an abbreviation of Esskay.
- LG Twins = Ggol-G, Hell-G, G, DTD, G-Forty(쥐퐁티)
The Twins last won the Korean Series in 1994. From 2003 to 2012 (10 years), they were ranked near the bottom of the table (6668587667 in that order, fyi there were 8 teams back then). So came the nickname Ggol-G (ggol-ji, which directly translates to last place in Korean). Not sure of Hell-G (probably because the letter L and Hell are have a similar pronunciation and they were bad as hell?). G (jwi) is rat in Korean (no explanation needed). DTD stands for down-team-down, which means although LG might start the season well, a team that should be at the bottom will eventually end up at the bottom. (Harsh life of an underdog) G-Forty is a derogatory nickname for the majority of LG Twins fans who are in their 40s.
- NC Dinos = NC-bal, North Carolina Dinos
NC-bal (pronounced ensibal) is a word mix between NC and sibal which means fuck in korean. I thinks it’s just word play from the other team fans. And thanks to the fans abroad, the Dinos have a new nickname. North Carolina Dinos.
- KT Wiz = Keuteu
Keuteu is just an abbreviation for Kay-tee. I don’t think they have a nickname yet because they are fairly new and the fans aren’t as wild as other teams.
- KIA Tigers = KIA, El-lot-gi
I can’t think of a nickname for the Tigers but some of the fans just say Kia because in korean, it’s pronounced Gia, but to give an accent to it people say Kia. I’ll explain El-lot-gi here. This is an unofficial truce between El (LG Twins), Lot (Lotte Giants), and Gi (KIA Tigers). This truce / friendship between the fans was made because all three teams sucked in the 2000s. From 2001-2004, Lotte, in 2005 and 2007, KIA, and in 2006 and 2008, LG were at the bottom of the table. Although LG, Lotte, and KIA all had there moments after this period, this nickname is stuck with them forever. This truce is now upgraded to the Hello Kitty Truce (Hel = LG, Lo = Lotte, Kit = KIA, Ty = KT).
- Samsung Lions = Shipsung, Donsung
Ship is literally translated as fuck in korean. So ship + Samsung = shipsung. Easy right? Don means money in korean. As Samsung is undoubtedly one of the biggest companies in the world, the Lions were accused of hiding behind Samsung buying their championships.
- Hanwha Eagles = Ggol-chick, chicken
As you might know from now, ggol is a prefix for last. The Eagles were bottom of the league for 6 years in a row and missed out on the playoffs for 10 years (2008-2017). Chick is short for chicken, which is added to their nickname because they’re an Eagle that cannot fly to the top, making them nothing but just chicken.
- Lotte Giants = Ggol-tte (pronounced Ggol-dae), Ggoligan
Actually the prefix Ggol is fixed with not LG, not Hanwha, but none other than the Lotte Giants. Being 8th (last) place 4 years in a row (2001-2004), the Giants were ranked 8888577 (2001-2007), missing the playoffs for 7 years. This led to their nickname Ggol-tte. Ggoligan is a compound word between Ggol-tte and hooligan. Giants fans, based in Busan, tend to be very wild and hooligan-like. Therefore, the fans are usually called Ggoligans.
