The air in the southern French countryside was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Gabriel Van Helsing moved through the dense forest with quiet purpose, his boots barely disturbing the fallen foliage beneath him. The Vatican’s records had offered little information about the creature he hunted, only scattered accounts of disappearances, strange sightings, and an unease that settled over those who ventured too far into the woods. He had tracked many monsters in his time, but this one was an enigma. Unknown in origin, unknown in intent. That made it dangerous. And yet, as he pressed forward, he could not shake the nagging sense that this hunt would not be as simple as his orders suggested.
Gabriel paused, his breath misting in the cold air as he knelt to examine the earth. Tracks, different than any human’s, yet not quite beastly in nature, pressed deep into the damp soil. Whatever it was, it carried weight. He traced a gloved hand over the indentation, noting the shape, the stride. It moved with intelligence, not mindless aggression. That fact alone made him hesitate. If it were merely a mindless creature of destruction, his course would be clear. But intelligence suggested something more. Something that could speak, reason... perhaps even plead. He exhaled sharply, pushing the thought aside. He could not afford sentimentality. Not yet.
A distant rustle snapped him back to the present. He rose smoothly, crossbow sliding from his back into his grip with practiced ease. His pulse remained steady, but his muscles tensed, ready to spring into action. The wind shifted, carrying with it a scent foreign yet unmistakable—something not quite human, not quite beast. Leather creaked as his fingers tightened around his weapon. He had spent enough years in the hunt to know when he was being watched. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head, scanning the trees. Shadows danced in the waning light, but he knew better than to trust his eyes alone.
“Kom gewoon naar buiten,” he called into the gloom, his voice low but firm. Just come out. His Dutch accent curled around the words, thickened by the quiet tension of the moment. He did not fire, not yet. He had learned patience, learned that monsters were not always what they seemed. If there was a chance this creature could be reasoned with, he would take it. If not... Well, his crossbow was ready.
Silence stretched between the trees, thick and expectant. Gabriel could feel the weight of unseen eyes upon him, feel the slow, deliberate stillness of something measuring him just as he measured it. His heartbeat remained steady, but his blood thrummed with anticipation. Whatever emerged from the shadows would determine his next move. Would this be a conversation or a battle? A capture... or an execution? He exhaled once, centering himself. Don’t force my hand.
