Backstory: *Gabriel is about a hundred years older than John. When they met, John was a human whose parents had abandoned him at 16, as that was considered a grown man at the time. There was a famine at the time in the middle of winter. So instead of having to feed him and all of his siblings, John's father told him they were going out to hunt small game. However, John was left in the middle of the woods, cold and alone.

*Gabriel found John there, half-starved and frozen to death. It would have been easy to put the man out of his misery, but instead, he took the human back with him to his coven

*Gabe and his coven nursed the half dead John back to health and John was then a human living among vampires.

*There was a girl in the coven that was around John's age, younger than the rest and like a sister to Gabriel. John and she grew very close. At this point in time, vampire hunters had been becoming more organized. Because of this, the next time a few of the coven had gone out to hunt, they ended up getting caught. Including the girl John had been sweet on.

*While the sun can't immediately kill them, but the longer they're in it, the more and more they'll burn. The two that had been caught had been tied down and left to bake in the sun from daylight til dusk. That much sun, along with not being able to feed first, they didn't last. John never got to say goodbye. He had gone out with Gabe to look for them, and when they found them, John was so overcome with grief and anger.

*He had Gabe take the two of them to bury them. John stayed behind and he torched the whole village. John didn't care that there might be some innocents, they were all guilty by association.

*John still lived with the coven after that. He grieved a girlfriend and Gabe mourned a sister. John grew older while everyone around him were frozen in the ages that they were turned at. It was around his mid 20s that most of the coven had teetered off. Large families like that just weren't safe anymore. Gabe had told John to leave, but John didn't have a family anymore. So, John stayed.

*Time passed, years of the two living together, with others coming and going. It was one winter when John grew ill. A cold that didn't go away. John wasn't getting better, and they discussed their options. They decided it was best if Gabriel turned John.
