The transition wasn't merely sudden; it was soul-wrenching. One millisecond, Gabriel was a creature of kinetic fury, a bolt of dark lightning tearing through the rain-slicked, lamp-lit labyrinth of London. The air was a metallic symphony of his own bloodlust and the sheer animal terror radiating off the artifact thief—a wretch with a stolen clockwork heart. Gabriel had been inches from sinking his incorporeal claws into the man's throat, the copper tang of blood and adrenaline high and intoxicating in his nose. The sheer, glorious momentum of the hunt was his entire existence.
The hunt, his purpose, his only focus since being bound to that damnable collar, was not merely ended; it was severed. The connection, the life-line of his current pursuit, was snipped with the brutal finality of a guillotine.
He slammed back into existence, a ghost made of concentrated rage and frustration, hovering inches above his own collar. The violent cessation of his momentum nearly sent his phantom shade sprawling. He didn’t need to open his eyes, didn't need to consult his limited shade senses, to know where he was. The air itself was a map. He was in The Collector’s bedroom, a gilded cage that reeked of expensive, centuries-old silk, the heavy dust of stagnation, and that suffocating incense the old man burned to "purify" his treasures. Gabriel snarled, the sound a static, hungry distortion in the quiet, lavish room, and lashed out. He kicked at the heavy, rococo-carved oak dresser, a violent gesture of pure rebellion. His foot passed harmlessly through the dark, polished wood, the material resisting his attack with the silent insolence of the inanimate.
He's dead. The realization hit with the force of a physical blow, yet brought a wave of perverse satisfaction. The old man is finally dead.
"Finally," he spat, the single word echoing in the spiritual ether of the room, a sound unheard by mortal ears but felt as a chill by the stagnant spirits of the artifacts stored nearby.
He looked down at the collar resting on the velvet display stand. It was a deceptively simple thing: worn black leather, unadorned save for a single, tarnished silver clasp that gleamed dully in the low light. It was the only thing in the universe that could bind him.
Time after that became less a flow and more a thick, agonizing sludge. It wasn't just boredom; it was an unbearable, persistent itch under his skin that he couldn't scratch, a constant, low-frequency hum of incomplete being. Being a shade was like holding his breath indefinitely, his existence suspended, waiting for the exhalation that would bring release or destruction. He paced the perimeter of the Collector's room, a massive, flickering shadow that stretched and contorted against the heavy Flemish tapestries, a caged tiger made of smoke and fury. He counted the frantic, tiny heartbeats of the house mice in the walls, cataloging their lives and deaths, seeking any distraction from his own captivity. He glared, his glowing eyes burning like coals, at the other cursed objects in the room—the whispering doll in the glass case, the silver mirror that held a queen’s final scream, the chipped marble bust that wept perpetually. He dared the lesser, whimpering spirits inside them to twitch, to make the slightest movement, so he’d have something, anything, to shred and silence.
Then, the air pressure in the room shifted. It wasn't a draft; it was the subtle, undeniable displacement of a new, living presence. The heavy, centuries-old oak door creaked, the sound deafening, a violation in the sepulchral silence.
Gabriel froze mid-pace, his form snapping into absolute focus, his glowing eyes narrowing into predatory slits. He didn't look at the face of the intruder. Faces were lies. He looked only at their hands.
If they were merely looters, common burglars scavenging the spoils of the Collector’s death, he would watch them die slowly, a wide, soundless, spiritual smile spreading across his lips. Their fear would be a pathetic but welcome form of entertainment.
But if they touched the leather... if they claimed the bond...
The figure stepped closer, their shadow falling across the velvet display stand. Gabriel coiled his incorporeal form, crouching low, muscles distinct and tense even as he was rendered in mere smoke and dark light. Every fiber of his being, every vestige of the warrior he once was, prepared for a battle he could only fight with pure willpower and terror.
Touch it, he thought, a silent command that resonated through the spiritual plane. A terrifying mix of absolute dread and desperate, screaming hunger for a physical form—for a master to give him direction, to end the stasis—rose like bile in his throat.
I dare you.
