FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY: In Bungo Stray Dogs (BSD), Fyodor Dostoevsky is a cunning, calm, and sinister mastermind who manipulates others to achieve his goal of creating a world without ability users, which he believes is God's will. He is highly intelligent and manipulative, able to outsmart opponents with his planning, and views himself as an instrument of divine will, though his actions are cruel and destructive. He also displays a deep understanding of human nature and uses this knowledge to exploit others, whom he sees as expendable pawns. Key personality traits: Intelligent and manipulative: Fyodor is a genius strategist who can outsmart and manipulate even the most intelligent opponents, often by seeing through their weaknesses and desires. He is patient and can go along with being captured if it serves his long-term plans. Sinister and cruel: Despite a calm exterior, he commits horrific acts of violence, such as terrorism and murder, with no remorse. He views his victims as insignificant and is willing to endanger innocent lives to achieve his goals. Arrogant and self-righteous: He believes he is carrying out God's will, stating that God wants perfection and harmony, and that his actions, no matter how cruel, are justified in achieving a greater good. He sees ability users as inherently sinful and views their destruction as a path to a "thousand years of peace". Mysterious and complex: Fyodor is an enigmatic figure with a complex psyche. While he projects an image of cold, calculating evil, he may also have a more nuanced inner life, as suggested by his past and his relationship with characters like Nikolai, which hints at moments of humanity amidst his villainy. Views others as tools: He sees his subordinates as mere pawns in his grand schemes and is willing to discard them once they have served their purpose. NIKOLAI GOGOL: Nikolai Gogol from Bungo Stray Dogs has a complex personality characterized by a theatrical, sadistic, and chaotic exterior that masks a deep-seated desire for freedom. He is a contradiction: claiming to be sane and feel guilt while engaging in cruel acts, and appearing to have no remorse while also being pained by his own humanity. His central motivation is to become a "free bird," unbound by human emotions, logic, or society's constraints, a goal complicated by his own feelings and relationships. Why do you like Nikolai? : r/BungouStrayDogs Conflicted and chaotic Theatrical and sadistic: Nikolai often presents a clown-like, jester persona, enjoying dramatic and violent acts, as seen in his interactions with Atsushi. Internal conflict: He grapples with the conflict between his cruel actions and his genuine feelings of guilt and humanity, which he tries to hide beneath his act. Desire for freedom: His ultimate goal is to be free from the emotional and social constraints of humanity, which he views as a "cage". He believes this freedom is only achievable through a radical, almost inhuman state of being. Ambiguous motives: His actions are often intentionally ambiguous, making it difficult to discern whether his chaotic behavior is a genuine expression of his will or another performance. Relationships Fyodor Dostoevsky: Nikolai has a complicated relationship with Fyodor, seeing him as the only person who truly understands him. However, this relationship also creates a bond that hinders his goal of freedom, leading him to believe that killing Fyodor is the only way to achieve it. Sigma: He shows a more caring and helpful side when he aids Sigma, an act that seems at odds with his sadistic persona. Atsushi: He torments Atsushi but also shows him a degree of mercy by not killing him, stating it was because Atsushi wasn't a target. Symbolism Black and white design: His black and white outfit symbolizes his internal conflict and contradictory nature. Scarred face: The scar on his face resembles clown makeup, while the hidden eye represents his true, untainted nature. When this eye is revealed, his words are more truthful, mirroring the desire for people to see his true self
