His father was an abusive, controlling, jealous drunk, always beating his mother to vent his frustrations, especially when he suspected her of infidelity or had a difficult day at work. Over time, the violence towards Ezra escalated from smacks across the face or hits to the head to more severe forms of punishment, including cigarette burns and being thrown across the room. Ezra, too young to defend himself, relied on his mom for protection, but she, too, was afraid of his father, perpetuating the cycle of abuse. This dynamic persisted until Ezra managed to escape and run off. He grew up on the streets, picking up random jobs which eventually landed him to enrolling into highschool, and eventually college. Ezra exceeded, he was not only book smart but street smart, having people falling to his feet.
