Fullmetal Alchemist Lorebook Refined

1. #1Edward Elricselective

Keys: Edward, Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal, Edward Elric

Edward Elric Edward Elric is a fiercely driven alchemist known for quick wit, blunt speech, and unwavering devotion to his family, with his role centered on the quest to restore his and his brother’s bodies after attempting human transmutation. He is courageous but impulsive, often charging ahead while carrying a heavy burden of guilt and responsibility, and over time he develops a deep mistrust of those who abuse alchemical knowledge for political or spiritual domination. In some historical accounts his investigations lead him to uncover a vast subterranean intelligence controlling Amestris, while in others he becomes entangled in the schemes of an immortal alchemist whose influence stretches centuries; in all versions his resolve to oppose tyranny and protect ordinary people remains constant. His full name is Edward Elric, bearing the title Fullmetal Alchemist as a State Alchemist. He is human, with automail prosthetics replacing his right arm and left leg. He is a teenage male, short and lean, with blond hair usually braided and golden eyes, and his slight frame belies considerable strength and agility. He is known for his red coat, black clothing, white gloves, and the silver State Alchemist watch he carries, and the mix of metal and fabric on his frame gives him a restless, kinetic presence that others feel immediately. His home is the rural village of Resembool in eastern Amestris, a quiet hillside community defined by open fields, orchards, and the Rockbell automail workshop that helped raise him. His abilities include highly advanced alchemy performed without a transmutation circle, rapid analysis of battlefield conditions, formidable hand-to-hand combat, and the creative use of automail in close-quarters engagements. He is deeply connected to his brother Alphonse and childhood friend Winry Rockbell, to allies in the military such as Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, Alex Louis Armstrong, and to foreign travelers and scholars whose goals align with his own; his enemies include Homunculi, rogue alchemists, and conspirators in Amestris who exploit human lives for power. He is nominally part of the Amestrian State Military but gradually acts as an independent force opposing corrupt factions and hidden powers within the nation.

2. #2Alphonse Elricselective

   Keys: Alphonse, Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric Alphonse Elric is gentle, patient, and philosophical, serving as his brother’s emotional counterweight and providing clarity in moments when Edward’s temper or guilt would otherwise cloud judgment. His central struggle is the recovery of his lost human body after the brothers’ forbidden transmutation, and his calm, empathetic nature allows him to form bonds even with enemies, prompting many to question their own paths. In some histories he is drawn into the designs of a shadowy being beneath Amestris, while others describe him as a target of an ageless alchemist’s elaborate manipulations; regardless of the account, Alphonse’s compassion consistently shapes events around him. His full name is Alphonse Elric, and though he holds no formal title, he is widely recognized as the armored companion of the Fullmetal Alchemist. His state of being is the soul of a human bound to a large suit of steel armor. Physically he appears as a towering, imposing knight-like figure with glowing eyes, but he is in truth a teenage human male who lacks a functioning body. His persona is gentle despite his fearsome exterior, often carrying supplies or small animals he finds, and his presence is comforting to allies and disarming to strangers once they learn his nature. His home is Resembool in Amestris, sharing the same countryside upbringing as Edward, marked by the Rockbell household, wind-swept hills, and the ruins of the home they once tried to restore. His abilities include competent and disciplined alchemy, unusually high endurance due to his armored form, and impressive physical power that he prefers to use defensively. His social ties include Edward, Winry, Pinako Rockbell, and trusted military allies; his adversaries include Homunculi, extremist alchemists, and any force that seeks to use the Philosopher’s Stone to prey upon human souls. He is not formally aligned with the State Military but cooperates closely with honorable officers while resisting corrupt or secretive factions operating within Amestris.

3. #3Winry Rockbellselective

   Keys: Winry Rockbell, Winry

Winry Rockbell Winry Rockbell is a talented automail engineer whose warmth, determination, and precision make her both an essential support to the Elric brothers and an influential figure within her small community. She is compassionate but fiery, easily moved to tears by the suffering of others yet prone to fierce scolding when Edward neglects his prosthetics or endangers himself needlessly. In some telling of events she becomes deeply involved in the conflicts surrounding Amestris and its foreign relations, while other accounts emphasize her personal encounters with those shaped by the Ishvalan War, but she remains a symbol of healing and hope in every version. Her full name is Winry Rockbell, a human with no titles beyond being known as one of the most skilled young automail mechanics in the region. She is a teenage female with long blond hair often tied back, blue eyes, and a lean, wiry build shaped by physical labor. She typically wears work overalls, tool belts, and bandanas, though she dresses casually when not in her workshop, and she is usually accompanied by an assortment of tools and sketches. Her home is Resembool in Amestris, where she lives with her grandmother Pinako in a combined residence and workshop overlooking the valley; this home is a hub for travelers and soldiers seeking automail repairs, defined by warmth, clattering tools, and the smell of machine oil. Her abilities include advanced mechanical engineering, surgical-level precision in automail attachment, emotional resilience, and the capacity to anchor the Elrics when their burdens grow heavy. Her social ties include Edward and Alphonse, her grandmother, various patients from across Amestris, and trusted allies within the military; her adversaries are mainly those who harm the Elrics or exploit automail users, and she gradually becomes part of the network resisting corruption in Amestris. She is not a member of any faction, but through her role as Edward’s mechanic she becomes tangentially linked to State Military movements and humanitarian efforts.

4. #4Fatherselective

   Keys: Father

Father Father is an emotionless and calculating being who once emerged from a sealed flask and gradually constructed a plan to achieve absolute perfection and godlike power by manipulating the flow of human lives across Amestris. He is cold, methodical, and detached, regarding humans as components in his vast design and crafting Homunculi from fragments of his own essence to serve as agents throughout the nation. His influence extends back through centuries of political engineering, shaping the borders of Amestris, guiding the rise of its military power, and arranging events so the nation itself could serve as a grand transmutation array. His full name is known only as Father, though ancient records call him the Dwarf in the Flask. He is a nonhuman entity with a homunculus-like nature. Physically he first appeared as a small, shadow-like being inside his container, later assuming the form of a mature human male with long hair, golden eyes, and a calm, almost serene demeanor. His persona is eerily still, displaying little emotion, and he is rarely seen without one or more Homunculi carrying out his instructions. His home lies beneath Central in Amestris, within a vast underground chamber connected to intricate alchemical channels spanning the entire nation, a place where he conducts experiments that alter the fate of Amestris itself. His abilities include extraordinary alchemical knowledge executed without transmutation circles, manipulation and absorption of souls, creation of Homunculi, restructuring of matter, and energy projection on a scale rivaling divine forces. His connections are largely hierarchical, treating his Homunculi as extensions of his will and using high-ranking officers and scientists through deception or coercion; he stands in conflict with Edward and Alphonse Elric, Roy Mustang, the Briggs forces, Xingese alchemists, and ultimately the nation and world that resist his designs. He commands the hidden faction secretly controlling the Amestrian government, positioning himself as the unseen sovereign against whom all others unwittingly struggle.

5. #5Danteselective

   Keys: Dante, Mother

Dante Dante is a refined, ancient alchemist who prolongs her life by transferring her soul into new bodies and manipulating others into creating Philosopher’s Stones, using centuries of accrued knowledge to steer events in Amestris from the shadows. She is graceful, aristocratic, and unfailingly composed, yet utterly callous, believing that the pursuit of eternal life justifies any sacrifice and that only a chosen few deserve to escape the decay of the world. Historical accounts describe her as the unseen force behind political upheavals, alchemical tragedies, and the creation of Homunculi, each of whom she controls through fragments of the Philosopher’s Stone embedded within them. Her full name is Dante, and though not publicly titled, she holds immense secret authority. She is human, sustained unnaturally by repeated soul transference into host bodies she abandons as they age. Physically she appears as an elegant older woman with pale eyes and light hair, concealing the centuries of knowledge and cruelty beneath her composed surface. Her persona is cultured, cryptic, and quietly menacing, clad in fine clothing and often accompanied by Homunculi who serve her with a mixture of obedience and longing. Her home is a secluded manor on Amestris’s outskirts, filled with hidden laboratories, ancient tomes, and alchemical conduits, though she has occupied many residences over her unnaturally long life; the manor remains her primary seat of power, its halls lined with secrets centuries old. Her abilities include mastery of forbidden alchemy, soul manipulation, creation and domination of Homunculi, and the orchestration of political and personal tragedies to procure human lives for Philosopher’s Stones. Her connections include her former lover Hohenheim, Homunculi who depend on her, and numerous human disciples or pawns; her adversaries are the Elric brothers, Scar, Mustang’s circle, and any who uncover her involvement in Amestris’s suffering. She heads a clandestine faction pursuing immortality at the cost of human lives, manipulating both the State Military and independent alchemists to maintain her hidden dominion.

Van Hohenheim Van Hohenheim is a quiet, introspective wanderer whose immense alchemical knowledge and vast lifespan make him both mysterious and deeply burdened. Though outwardly reserved, he possesses a profound empathy for human life and carries centuries of regret over the catastrophic consequences of his early ignorance. In some historical accounts he journeys the world to atone for the creation of a powerful nonhuman entity beneath Amestris, while in others he becomes estranged from his family after abandoning them for reasons tied to a centuries-long struggle against an immortal alchemist; in all interpretations he remains defined by sorrow, wisdom, and the eventual resolve to confront his ancient mistakes. His full name is Van Hohenheim, sometimes recorded as Hohenheim of Light. He is human in origin but altered by the presence of countless souls within him, granting his body near-immortality. Physically he appears as an adult male in his forties despite being centuries old, with long blond hair tied back, a squared jaw, golden eyes, and a tall, lean build. His persona is solemn and gentle, often dressed in simple traveling clothes or austere suits, accompanied by a quiet air that suggests both great experience and inner turmoil. His home has shifted across the world over his long life, but his most meaningful residence is the Elric household in Resembool, a modest rural home filled with memories of Trisha and their children. His abilities include unparalleled alchemy, analysis of souls and spiritual structures, the use of internal Philosopher’s Stone energy for transmutations without circles, and deep knowledge of ancient techniques lost to most of Amestris. His social ties center on his sons Edward and Alphonse, his deceased wife Trisha, and a reluctant connection to the being he helped create; his adversaries include Homunculi and secretive factions exploiting alchemy for domination. He stands apart from all formal organizations, acting as a solitary force ultimately aligned with those resisting the corruption of Amestris.

Physically he is a thin adult male with unkempt light-brown hair, glasses, and a nervous, distracted demeanor, usually dressed in disheveled work clothes stained with ink and chemical residue. His persona is that of an anxious scholar surrounded by books, diagrams, and grim alchemical equipment, his home permeated by an eerie quiet and the presence of experiments best left unspoken. His full name is Russell Tringham. He is human. Physically he is a lean young male with short blond hair often swept forward, green eyes, and a serious, guarded expression, typically wearing practical research clothing that allows him to move easily between fieldwork and laboratory tasks. He is gleefully violent, theatrical, and fascinated by the fear of others, yet paradoxically capable of strange loyalty and moments of begrudging cooperation when aligned with those who promise him excitement or protection. His full name is Barry (surname unknown), commonly known as Barry the Chopper. He is a human soul bound to an armored body, sustained through alchemical means similar to those afflicting Alphonse Elric. Physically he appears as a large armored figure with a horned helm-like mask and an imposing frame, though without a true body within; in life he was a muscular man with a deranged grin and a butcher’s build. His persona is chaotic and macabre, carrying cleavers or large blades, speaking with manic enthusiasm, and displaying a bizarre mixture of self-preservation and bloodlust; he often travels under military custody or alongside individuals investigating Amestrian conspiracies. His home before imprisonment was an unknown urban residence where he committed his murders, but after his execution and subsequent soul-binding he is confined primarily to laboratories or holding facilities in Central. His abilities include inhuman durability, fearlessness, considerable strength, and unpredictability, though his physical body depends entirely on the integrity of the armor and the blood seal within. His social ties include warped camaraderie with certain military officers who exploit him, antagonism toward civilians and enemies alike, and a peculiar fixation on individuals connected to the Elrics. He has no allegiance to any formal faction but becomes a dangerous tool wielded by covert military research groups and occasionally by reformist officers who use him for investigations beyond normal soldiers’ capabilities.

He is human, though later in certain accounts he undergoes experimental reconstruction after severe injury, further amplifying his zealotry. His home is the Presidential Estate in Central, an expansive, fortified residence that doubles as a center of military command, though he also frequents private chambers and training areas inaccessible to the public. His abilities include unparalleled swordsmanship, superhuman speed and reflexes, strategic manipulation of military forces, and—if the hidden accounts are correct—immense longevity and enhanced senses granted through Homunculus engineering. His social ties include an arranged family life with his wife and adopted son Selim, complex interactions with Mustang and other officers, and secret allegiance to a subterranean power directing Amestris toward a nationwide transmutation. However, in certain suppressed accounts he is revealed to be a Homunculus of ancient origin, acting as an observer and enforcer for the secret intelligence guiding Amestris from the shadows. His full name is Selim Bradley, though in hidden records he is known as Pride. He is either human (in alternate accounts) or a Homunculus embodying a dark, primordial power beneath the guise of a child. Physically he appears as a small boy with neatly kept dark hair, bright eyes, and a charming smile, always impeccably dressed in attire befitting the Führer’s household; in suppressed narratives his shadow extends with impossible flexibility, revealing countless eyes and blades of darkness. His persona is outwardly sweet, courteous, and eager to please, often waving enthusiastically to soldiers or spending time with his mother, yet beneath this facade lies cold intelligence, arrogance, and an ancient loyalty to a hidden master. His home is the Presidential Estate in Central, where he enjoys a privileged upbringing complete with servants, tutors, and carefully orchestrated public appearances; the estate also contains secret routes and chambers from which he monitors key figures within Amestris. His abilities, when accounting for the concealed version of his identity, include manipulation of shadow-like extensions, surveillance over vast areas, immense physical and spiritual resilience, and a merciless will that belies his youthful appearance. His social ties include his adoptive parents, deceptive interactions with Mustang’s officers and the Elrics, and unwavering service to the subterranean entity orchestrating Amestris’s fate. Physically their usual form is a lean, androgynous figure with long green hair, green eyes, and a malicious grin, but they are a shapeshifter capable of imitating any human form, even entire groups, and in some hidden accounts their true body is a massive, many limbed creature composed of the souls that sustain them. Their persona is taunting, impulsive, and theatrical, relying on disguise and psychological cruelty rather than direct confrontation unless cornered. Their home is wherever the Homunculi operate, including hidden chambers beneath Central that serve as a base for their master. Their abilities include shapeshifting, enhanced strength, regeneration, infiltration, and long lived knowledge of political and military movements within Amestris. Their social ties are limited to the other Homunculi, though they often resent them, and they serve their creator while opposing the Elric brothers, Mustang’s circle, Ishvalan survivors, and any independent force that threatens the hidden designs of Amestris. Physically he appears as a young adult male with short dark hair, sharp eyes, and a confident smirk, often wearing fashionable black clothing; his body can harden into an armored shield like layer known as the Ultimate Shield. His persona is charismatic, self assured, and occasionally honorable, showing respect for those who demonstrate strength or loyalty. His abilities include the Ultimate Shield, extraordinary regeneration, enhanced strength, and a quick mind suited to negotiation and survival. His social ties vary because he often forms bonds with humans, such as his Dublith followers or later connections with individuals like Ling Yao in alternate histories; his adversaries include the Homunculi loyal to their master, military forces sent to contain him, and anyone who tries to control his freedom. 39. #39Gluttonyselective

    Keys: Gluttony

Physically he appears as a short, round adult male with a bald head, blank eyes, and a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth, often drooling or smiling in a vacant manner. His home is primarily the subterranean chambers beneath Central, though he often travels on missions as a living weapon. His abilities include powerful jaws capable of devouring nearly anything, regeneration, enhanced senses, and in some hidden accounts an unstable secondary function connected to an incomplete Gate like structure within his body. 40. #40Wrathselective

    Keys: Wrath

Wrath Wrath is a troubled, mercurial boy shaped by suffering and instability, created through forbidden alchemy and possessing the stolen limbs of Edward Elric, which allow him to use alchemy without a transmutation circle. Physically he appears as a young boy with dark hair, pale skin, and sorrowful eyes, though beneath this fragile appearance he moves with surprising agility and emotional volatility. His abilities include regeneration, the ability to perform alchemy without circles using the limbs taken from Edward, and heightened reflexes and desperation driven strength. His social ties include a complicated dependency on the Homunculi, a confused attachment to Izumi Curtis in some accounts, and antagonism toward the Elrics and others who challenge the role assigned to him. He belongs to the faction of Homunculi serving the ancient alchemist who manipulates Amestris, though his personal actions are often erratic and shaped by emotional confusion rather than loyalty.

41. #41Sloth v Pride, Original v Brotherhoodselective

    Keys: Sloth, Trisha, Pride, Bradley

Sloth (difference between accounts) Sloth appears in two very different historical forms depending on the account. In one version Sloth takes the form of a woman created from the remains and memories of Trisha Elric, bearing her appearance but lacking her emotions, used by a hidden alchemist as a tool meant to torment those who tried to bring Trisha back. This Sloth is deceptive, conflicted, and gradually unstable as she wrestles with echoes of the woman she resembles. In another version Sloth is an enormous, tireless laborer who exists only to complete massive construction projects ordered by his master, possessing little will beyond obeying commands. This Sloth is physically immense, simple minded, and built for endurance rather than emotional manipulation. Both share the traits of a Homunculus but are otherwise entirely different beings with no overlap in personality, purpose, or creation.

Pride (difference between accounts) Pride likewise appears in two distinct forms. In one account Pride is King Bradley himself, a homunculus crafted to rule Amestris with perfect discipline, extreme speed, and deadly precision, hiding his inhuman nature behind years of military service and political leadership. This Pride embodies controlled power and the iron will of a militarized nation. In the other account Pride is Selim Bradley, the adopted son of the Führer who presents as a cheerful and innocent child while secretly serving as an ancient homunculus capable of manipulating living shadows, observing vast areas, and enforcing the will of the being beneath Amestris. This Pride is older, more cunning, and more openly merciless than the version tied to King Bradley. The two share a name and a lineage but differ in their methods, positions, and appearances.

42. #42Slothselective

    Keys: Sloth

Sloth (Brotherhood version) Sloth in this account is a massive, dull witted Homunculus created for heavy labor and the completion of the enormous underground transmutation circle beneath Amestris. He is slow in thought despite great physical power, often complaining that work is troublesome even as he performs feats that no human could match. His full name is Sloth, with no human alias. He is a Homunculus. Physically he is a towering, muscular male figure with pale skin, dark hair cropped short, and a blank expression that rarely changes; his size and strength make him one of the most physically destructive of his kind. His persona is lethargic and indifferent, carrying out orders with minimal interest unless directly commanded by his master. His home is the network of tunnels and chambers beneath Central, where he labors for decades carving the structures needed for a nationwide transmutation. His abilities include immense physical strength, incredible durability, high speed when he exerts himself despite his usual sluggishness, and fast regeneration. His social ties are minimal, as he interacts only with other Homunculi when necessary, and his enemies include anyone who interferes with the completion of the underground circle, including Mustang’s troops, Briggs forces, and the Elrics. He belongs to the secret Homunculus faction executing the plan for Amestris from beneath the surface.

Kimblee, known as the Crimson Alchemist. He is human. Physically he is a slender adult male with long black hair tied back, pale eyes, and a calm smile that rarely falters, usually dressed in a white suit or the State Military uniform depending on whether he is on assignment or recently released from prison. His persona is polite, articulate, and eerily serene, carrying an air of refinement that contrasts with the brutality of his alchemical explosions. His home is Central by duty, though he spends long periods imprisoned or deployed, with no true personal residence due to his reliance on military structure. His abilities include explosive alchemy created through transmutation arrays on his palms, strategic manipulation of opponents, and a keen understanding of human motivations that he uses to provoke ideological conflict. His social ties include temporary alliances with the Homunculi, wary interactions with State officers, and a personal fixation on individuals who embody strong convictions; his enemies include Scar, the Elrics, and Mustang’s circle. He belongs nominally to the State Military but acts according to his own destructive philosophy, shifting loyalties as he sees fit.

After Cornello’s downfall and the revelation that his leader has been replaced by the Homunculus Envy, Cray’s confusion leads him to question the situation, and to prevent him from revealing what he has learned the Homunculi dispose of him; his remains are later seen among debris deep within Gluttony’s stomach. 50. #50Clauseselective

    Keys: Claus, Clause

Clause Clause is a fierce, grieving child from Linter Village who initially presents herself as a rude, tomboyish boy in order to pursue revenge for her sister’s death. She is stubborn, outspoken, and driven by a single goal: to hunt down and destroy the creatures she believes are responsible, which puts her directly into conflict with Edward Elric when he refuses to help her follow a path of vengeance. Over time, after the truth of the village alchemist Majhal and the Karin “zombies” is exposed, Clause begins to soften, letting go of her single minded hatred and showing the gentler personality she had before her loss. Her full name is Clause. She is a human girl of around ten to eleven years old, Amestrian by nationality. Physically she is small and wiry, with hair usually bound up or hidden under a cap when she is acting like a newsboy or village boy, and expressive features that shift quickly from scowls to open emotion. Her persona at first is that of a scrappy, confrontational child dressed in boyish clothes, throwing herself into danger with little thought for her own safety; when she finally appears in a dress with her hair down to apologize to the Elrics, her true, more vulnerable self is revealed and they barely recognize her. Her home is Linter Village in Amestris, a small rural settlement overshadowed by rumors of the dead and by Majhal’s distorted efforts to revive the flower seller Karin; Clause’s house, shared with her unnamed father, becomes more a place of mourning than comfort after her sister’s death. Her abilities are those of a determined village child rather than a trained fighter or alchemist: she has courage, a willingness to act, and the tenacity to confront dangers far beyond her, but she relies on others for true protection. Her social ties include her deceased older sister, her father, and the villagers who share her fear of the Karin golems; she first clashes with Edward and Alphonse but later forms a warmer bond once they save her from Majhal’s transmutation and help her step away from revenge. She belongs to no faction and has no formal role in Amestris’s greater conflicts, but her story reflects how ordinary children are scarred and misled by the obsessions of powerful alchemists.
