- #1High School DxD overview
Keys: DxD, Miyama-Zero, ecchi, High School DxD, supernatural, Ichiei Ishibumi, harem, light novel
High School DxD is a Japanese light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi, illustrated by Miyama-Zero. It follows Issei Hyoudou, a perverted high-school student killed on his first date and reborn as a devil. He joins the Occult Research Club—a front for Rias Gremory's devil peerage—and becomes embroiled in wars between devils, fallen angels, angels, dragons, and mythological pantheons. The series spans 25+ main volumes plus the sequel True/Shin High School DxD, four anime seasons (TNK S1-3, Passione S4), and multiple manga adaptations. Core themes: the Sacred Gear power system, Rating Games (chess-based devil tournaments), the Three Factions truce, Issei's growth from pervert pawn to Red Dragon Emperor and Harem King, and found family within a devil peerage.
- #2The power system of DxD
Keys: miracle, God of the Bible, Balance Breaker, Sacred Gear, Sacred Gears, power system, desire, Longinus, Juggernaut Drive
Sacred Gears are supernatural weapons/abilities created by the Biblical God and implanted in chosen humans. They are powered by the user's desire—the stronger the desire, the stronger the Gear responds. Each Sacred Gear has a unique ability. When mastered to their limit, they achieve Balance Breaker, releasing the Gear's full power as Scale Mail or a unique form. Juggernaut Drive is a berserk overdrive that releases the sealed entity's true power at the cost of the user's life. Sub-species are unique evolutionary variations. The 13 Longinus are the rarest and most powerful, named after the spear that pierced Christ. Artificial Sacred Gears can be created by master researchers like Azazel. Sacred Gears can develop wills of their own, communicate with hosts, and even rebel if mistreated.
- #3The thirteen legendary Longinus-class Sacred Gears
Keys: Longinus-class, True Longinus, Forbidden Invade Balor, Incinerate Anthem, Absolute Demise, Nereid Kyrie, Twilight Healing, 13 Longinus, Regulus Nemea, Telos Karma, Boosted Gear, Sephiroth Graal, Zenith Tempest, Aeon Balor, Longinus, Dimension Lost, Divine Dividing
The 13 Longinus are the most powerful Sacred Gears: 1) Boosted Gear (Issei) — houses Ddraig, doubles power every 10s. 2) Divine Dividing (Vali) — houses Albion, halves opponent power every 10s. 3) Twilight Healing (Asia) — healing rings, can cure anything. 4) Dimension Lost (Georg) — creates pocket dimensions, can trap or teleport. 5) Regulus Nemea (Sairaorg) — houses the Lion King, grants lion-themed armor. 6) Sephiroth Graal (Valerie Tepes) — Holy Grail, grants immortality and resurrection. 7) Incinerate Anthem (Lint Sellzen) — holy flames that purify evil. 8) Absolute Demise — absolute zero ice powers. 9) Telos Karma — fate manipulation. 10) Zenith Tempest — weather and storm control. 11) Nereid Kyrie — water and ocean domain. 12) Aeon Balor (Gasper) — time manipulation. 13) True Longinus (Cao Cao) — the original holy spear, strongest Longinus, can kill gods and has its own will. Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast (Gasper's evolved form) is a candidate for the 14th Longinus.
- #4The ultimate form of Sacred Gears
Keys: True Queen, Welsh Dragon Blaster, sub-species, Longinus Smasher, Balance Breaker, Cardinal Crimson Promotion, Juggernaut Drive, Scale Mail
Balance Breaker is the pinnacle form of a Sacred Gear, achieved when the user's power, desire, and emotions reach their peak. It fully manifests the Sacred Gear's latent power, typically as Scale Mail armor but sometimes as weapons or unique forms. Each Balance Breaker is unique: Issei's Boosted Gear Scale Mail (red dragon scale armor), Vali's Divine Dividing Scale Mail (white dragon armor), Sairaorg's Regulus Nemea (golden lion armor), Kiba's Sword of Betrayer. Sub-species Balance Breakers develop unique traits based on the user. Issei's Cardinal Crimson Promotion is a perfected Balance Breaker combining power and stability; True Queen is his further evolved form. Juggernaut Drive is the forbidden state releasing the sealed dragon's full power—user dies after. Chants trigger transformations (e.g., 'Welsh Dragon! Boosted Gear Scale Mail!'). Signature attacks: Dragon Shot, Longinus Smasher, Welsh Dragon Blaster.
- #5Devil chess-piece system
Keys: Bishop, Ajuka Beelzebub, Pawn, Knight, peerage, Queen, Rook, Evil Pieces, chess, promotion, High-class Devil, Rating Game, King, Middle-class Devil, Evil Piece, Rating Games
Rating Games are sanctioned chess-like battles between devil peerages, created by Ajuka Beelzebub. Each High-class Devil (King) gets 15 Evil Pieces: 1 Queen (most versatile), 2 Rooks (strength/defense), 2 Knights (speed), 2 Bishops (magic), 8 Pawns (worth 1 each). They reincarnate humans as devils using these pieces. A Pawn promoted on the opponent's field gains higher-piece abilities. Issei uniquely required all 8 Pawn pieces. Reincarnated devils serve their King until they earn their own peerage by reaching High-class. Stray devils abandon their master and are hunted. Ratings determine political power and advancement. Tournaments include the Azazel Cup and the international Rating Game championship. Sona's dream is a school (Aurea Academy) for Rating Games education.
- #6Devils, Fallen Angels, and Angels
Keys: angel, Underworld, fallen angel, Sirzechs, Four Great Devils, Grigori, truce, Heaven, Azazel, devil, Great War, Maou, Three Factions, Michael, 72 pillars
The supernatural world is split into Three Factions after the centuries-long Great War. Devils (Underworld) — ruled by the Four Great Devils (Maou): Lucifer (Sirzechs), Leviathan (Serafall), Satan, Beelzebub (Ajuka). The 72 Pillar families form the nobility. Devils use Evil Pieces to reincarnate humans due to low birth rates. Fallen Angels (Grigori) — led by a Governor-General (Azazel, then Shemhazai). They research Sacred Gears and govern from the Underworld's fallen angel territory. Angels (Heaven) — led by Michael. The Biblical God died in the Great War, so no new angels can be naturally born. Humans can convert to angels through baptism-like rites (Irina). After the Khaos Brigade threat, the Three Factions signed a truce, enabling cooperation through organizations like the Occult Research Club which includes devils, fallen angels, and angels working together.
- #7Antagonist coalition
Keys: Qlippoth, terrorist, Khaos Brigade, Ophis, Cao Cao, Rizevim, Vali Team, Old Maou Faction, Hero Faction, Chaos Brigade
The Khaos Brigade is the primary antagonist coalition, formed by Ophis to kill Great Red. Subgroups: Old Maou Faction (descendants of original Maous wanting power back—Cattleya, Creuserey, Shalba, Diodora), Hero Faction (led by Cao Cao with descendants of legendary heroes like Heracles, Siegfried, Georg, Jeanne d'Arc, Perseus—aims for human supremacy), Vali Team (Vali, Bikou, Kuroka, Arthur Pendragon, Le Fay—seeks strong fights, not truly evil), Qlippoth (led by Rizevim Lucifer—Vali's evil grandfather who wants to destroy everything, includes Euclid Lucifuge and the Evil Dragons). Cao Cao betrays Ophis, stealing her power to create a 'fake Ophis' for the Hero Faction. The factions splinter and are gradually defeated across the series. The Khaos Brigade represents the major antagonist force pushing the Three Factions to unite.
- #8The realm and culture of devils
Keys: Underworld, Maou, Sitri, Phoenix, Astaroth, devil contract, Lucifuge, noble family, Gremory, Hell, devil, devil society, Extra Demon, Bael, 72 pillars
The Underworld is the devil realm—not a fire-and-brimstone Hell but a functioning civilization with cities, technology, politics, and culture. Ruled by the Four Great Devils (Maou) and the 72 Pillar noble families. Key families: Gremory (red hair, Power of Destruction), Bael (strongest pillar, Power of Destruction), Sitri (water magic), Phoenix (regeneration), Astaroth (former Beelzebub house), Lucifuge (Extra Demons, ice magic). Devil society is feudal—High-class devils command peerages, Middle-class are rising nobles, Low-class are commoners. Reincarnated devils start low but can rise. Contracts with humans provide power (sacrifices/offerings). The economy runs on demonic power and human pacts. Devils use magic circles for teleportation and communication. The Underworld has entertainment (Rating Games), schools, and its own media. Stray devils who abandon masters are executed.
- #9The fallen angel organization
Keys: Armaros, Penemue, fallen angel, Baraqiel, artificial Sacred Gear, black wings, Kokabiel, Grigori, Azazel, fallen angels, Shemhazai, light spear
Grigori is the organization of fallen angels, who fell from Heaven and grew black wings. Led by a Governor-General (originally Azazel, later Shemhazai). Notable fallen angels: Azazel (original Governor, Sacred Gear researcher, laid-back genius), Shemhazai (succeeded Azazel, maintains Grigori with a bureaucratic style), Baraqiel (Akeno's father, former Governor before Azazel, lightning elementalist), Kokabiel (extremist warmonger who wanted to restart the Three Factions war, defeated by Issei's group), Penemue (appears in later volumes), Armaros. Fallen angels wield Light Spears as weapons and have various elemental affinities. Grigori specializes in Sacred Gear research and artificial Sacred Gear development. Their main base is in the Underworld. They were the first to retreat from the Great War. Under Azazel's leadership post-truce, they focus on technology and research rather than warfare.
- #10The angel faction
Keys: light, angel, Church, God of the Bible, ace, angels, Heaven, seraph, Michael, exorcist
Heaven is the realm of angels, led by Archangel Michael. The Biblical God died during the Great War, meaning no new angels can be spontaneously created. Angels maintain their numbers by converting worthy humans through baptism-like ceremonies (Irina Shido becomes an angel this way). Angels use light-based attacks, including Light Spears and Holy magic. They have a ranking system with Ace being a high rank. Archangels like Michael govern Heaven's operations. The Angel faction works with the Church on Earth—exorcists hunt devils and stray supernatural beings. Since God's death, Heaven's power has been limited. The Church possesses holy swords (Excalibur fragments, Durandal) and sacred relics including the True Longinus (the spear that pierced Christ, now wielded by Cao Cao). Michael is a moderate who supports the Three Factions truce. Despite God's death, the Angel faction remains a significant power.
- #11The dragon hierarchy
Keys: Dragon Kings, Fafnir, Five Dragon Kings, Dragon King, Yu-Long, Two Heavenly Dragons, Ddraig, Great Red, dragons, Ophis, Vritra, Dragon God, Ladon, dragon hierarchy, dragon, Midgardsormr, Tannin, Grendel, Azi Dahaka, Albion, Crom Cruach
Dragons are among the most powerful beings. Hierarchy: Dragon Gods (top) — Ophis (Infinite Dragon God), Great Red (True Red Dragon God Emperor). Two Heavenly Dragons — Ddraig (Red Dragon Emperor), Albion (White Dragon of Supremacy), locked in eternal rivalry, sealed in Longinus. Five Dragon Kings — Tannin (former dragon king who became a devil, trains Issei), Vritra (Black Dragon of Domination, sealed in Saji's Absorption Line), Fafnir (Golden Dragon King, sealed by Azazel's artificial Sacred Gear, contracted to Asia), Midgardsormr (Norse serpent dragon), Yu-Long (Chinese Dragon King). Evil Dragons — Crom Cruach (among strongest, later volumes), Grendel (evil dragon serving Qlippoth), Ladon, Azi Dahaka, Apophis. Dragon users contract with dragons for power. Issei becomes part dragon god when Great Red gives him flesh to rebuild his body. Dragons have long lives, immense physical strength, and elemental breath attacks.
- #12Types of magic and supernatural abilities
Keys: demonic power, magic, Power of Destruction, magic circle, teleportation, elemental magic, barrier, holy magic, lightning, Norse magic, Youjutsu, Senjutsu, Touki, seal
Multiple magic systems coexist. Demonic Power: innate energy of devils for spells, flight, teleportation via magic circles, enhanced physical abilities. Clan-specific abilities include Power of Destruction (Bael/Gremory — disintegrates matter). Senjutsu: Eastern youkai technique using life energy/ki to sense and manipulate life forces (Koneko, Kuroka). Touki: fighting spirit armor enhancing physical abilities. Youjutsu: youkai-specific magic. Norse Magic: rune-based defensive spells and barriers (Rossweisse). Holy Magic/Light: angel and exorcist powers (light spears, purification). Elemental magic: lightning (Akeno, Baraqiel), water (Sona), fire (Phoenix family). Dark magic, summoning, healing, and sealing arts also exist. Magic circles are a universal tool for teleportation, communication, and spell focus. Wizards/Magicians are humans who learn magic through study. Sacred Gears are distinct from magic but can synergize.
- #13The main setting school
Keys: school, clubroom, old school building, Occult Research Club, Kuoh Academy, Kuoh, student council, Hyoudou residence
Kuoh Academy is a formerly all-girls school that recently became co-ed, explaining the female-skewed student body. The Occult Research Club operates from the old school building's clubroom (furnished with sofas, tea sets, magical equipment). The Student Council run by Sona Sitri similarly fronts her peerage. After the truce, Azazel becomes a teacher and club advisor. The school grounds include standard classrooms, sports fields, a kendo dojo, a pool, and hidden supernatural areas. The Hyoudou household near the school becomes a central living space where most female characters eventually reside (Rias, Asia, Akeno, Koneko, Xenovia, Irina, Rossweisse, Ravel, Ophis). The school serves as neutral ground for supernatural activities and a place for young devils to gain human experience.
- #14The Japanese supernatural faction
Keys: Kuroka, Sun Wukong, kitsune, Yasaka, Ninetails, nekomata, nekoshou, Kunou, Koneko, Bikou, Kyoto, Senjutsu, Japanese mythology, youkai
Japanese youkai exist as a separate supernatural faction aligned with neither the Three Factions nor other pantheons. Based in Kyoto, they are led by Yasaka (a powerful nine-tailed kitsune) and her daughter Kunou. Nekoshou (cat youkai) are a high-level species—Koneko and Kuroka are nekoshou/nekomata with two tails. Sun Wukong (the legendary Monkey King) and his disciple Bikou are prominent youkai. Youkai use Senjutsu (life energy manipulation) and Youjutsu as their primary arts. The Kyoto youkai have a tense but cooperative relationship with devils. Issei and the group visit Kyoto for a school trip that turns into a battle against the evil god Loki. Yasaka and Kunou later become allies. Youkai can become devils through Evil Pieces while retaining their youkai abilities.
- #15The Norse pantheon in DxD
Keys: Norse, Valhalla, Loki, Valkyrie, evil god, Fenrir, Odin, Norse magic, Rossweisse, Ragnarok, Gleipnir
The Norse pantheon is a major mythological faction in DxD. Odin (King of the Norse Gods) is a lecherous old man who appears frequently. He arrives with Rossweisse (his Valkyrie bodyguard) to participate in the Three Factions summit. Loki is the primary Norse antagonist—an evil god who tries to start Ragnarok by unleashing Fenrir (the monstrous wolf). Issei and Vali fight together against Loki, defeating him with help from Odin. Fenrir is later tamed and becomes a key asset. Norse magic is practiced by Rossweisse and includes runic defenses, barriers, and healing arts. The Norse gods have independent territory outside the Three Factions. Odin gifts Issei assistance and later Rossweisse is left behind to join Rias's peerage. Other Norse elements: Midgardsormr (one of the Dragon Kings), Valkyries (warrior maidens serving Odin).
- #16Legendary weapons in DxD
Keys: Sword Birth, Gram, Amano-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, demonic sword, Ex-Durandal, holy sword, Hauteclere, Caliburn, Sword of Betrayer, holy sword project, Durandal, Excalibur
Holy Swords are legendary weapons imbued with holy power, deadly to devils. Excalibur shattered during the Great War into 7 fragments, each with unique abilities: Excalibur Destruction, Mimic, Nightmare, etc. Durandal is a holy sword that cuts anything, wielded by Xenovia. Ex-Durandal fuses Durandal with Excalibur fragments. Hauteclere is another holy sword given to Irina when she becomes an angel. The Holy Sword Project was a Church experiment implanting Excalibur fragments into children to create holy sword wielders—killing all subjects except Kiba (sole survivor). Caliburn (King Arthur's sword) is wielded by Arthur Pendragon. Demonic Swords include Gram (wielded by Siegfried, then Kiba after Siegfried's defeat) which has a berserker nature and a will of its own. Amano-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi is a legendary Japanese sword. Kiba's Sacred Gear Sword Birth can generate various swords.
- #17The vampire faction
Keys: Valerie Tepes, Vlad, Tepes, vampire clan, vampire, Tepes Castle, Marius Tepes, Gasper, Sephiroth Graal, dhampir
Vampires are a separate supernatural race with their own society and politics. Divided into clans, the prominent Tepes clan rules from Tepes Castle in Romania. Vampire Lords are the nobility. Dhampirs (half-vampire, half-human) like Gasper are discriminated against. Valerie Tepes is a pure-blood vampire princess who possesses the Longinus Sephiroth Graal (Holy Grail granting immortality). Her brother Marius Tepes abused her power to make the Tepes clan immortal, mentally breaking her. Gasper returns to his homeland, meets Valerie, and awakens Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast—killing Marius and the vampires who abused Valerie. The vampire arc explores Gasper's origins, his hidden power as a vessel for the Balor consciousness, and his growth from anxious shut-in to a powerful being with the potential 14th Longinus.
- #18The Red Dragon Emperor — Main Protagonistselective
Keys: Welsh Dragon, Pawn, protagonist, Ise, Sekiryuutei, Harem King, Dragon God, Red Dragon Emperor, Hyoudou Issei, Booster, Issei Hyoudou, Oppai Dragon, Issei
Issei Hyoudou is the main protagonist of High School DxD. He is a second-year student at Kuoh Academy, famously perverted as part of the "Perverted Trio" with friends Matsuda and Motohama. Before his death, he was an ordinary human boy obsessed with breasts, collecting porn magazines, and dreaming of having a harem. His life changes forever when he is killed on his first date by the fallen angel Raynare (disguised as Yuuma Amano), who stabs him through the stomach with a Light Spear. He is resurrected as a devil by Rias Gremory, uniquely requiring all 8 Pawn pieces due to his immense latent potential as the vessel of Ddraig.
Personality & Growth: Issei is honest about his desires, openly perverted, and lacks shame about his sexual interests. He is known for techniques like Dress Break (destroys female opponents' clothes), Bilingual (reads girls' thoughts through their breasts), and PAI PAI (a technique involving breast-themed attacks). Beneath the perversion lies a deeply loyal, brave, and selfless heart. He grows from a cowardly boy who runs from danger into a heroic leader who willingly sacrifices himself for others. He has been killed multiple times but always revived through the power of his bonds and Ddraig. His defining trait is his loyalty to Rias and his peerage, whom he considers family. He inspires fierce loyalty in others because he truly cares about everyone regardless of species or faction. He is surprisingly wise about emotional matters, often giving heartfelt advice while being oblivious to his own relationships.
Relationships: Rias Gremory is his King, first love, and fiancée—he proposes at her graduation and she accepts, becoming his first official girlfriend. Akeno Himejima openly loves him and doesn't mind being secondary. Asia Argento adores him and was his first close friend in the supernatural world. Xenovia Quarta bluntly wants his child for strong genetics. Koneko Toujou slowly opens up through his warmth. Irina Shido is his childhood friend who becomes an angel. Rossweisse falls for him after he poses as her boyfriend. Ravel Phoenix idolizes him as a hero and becomes his manager and Bishop. He considers all of them his future harem, a fact grudgingly accepted by Rias.
Abilities & Forms: Possesses the Longinus Boosted Gear housing Ddraig the Welsh Dragon (Red Dragon Emperor). Core ability: Boost—doubles his power every 10 seconds with no upper limit. Can transfer boosted power to allies and objects. His forms: Boosted Gear Scale Mail (basic red dragon armor), Juggernaut Drive (berserk form that kills the user—survived through Rias's sacrifice), Cardinal Crimson Promotion (perfected Balance Breaker combining power and control, activation chant: "I am the one who will become the Heavenly Dragon"), True Queen (further evolution with crimson armor, white wings, and nine dragon emblems), DxD G / Dragon Deification (god-level form using Great Red's flesh and Ophis's power, vastly surpassing normal limits), AxA (Apoptosis x Amrita, his ultimate form in later volumes fusing his power with Ophis and Great Red's essence). Signature attacks: Dragon Shot (energy blast), Longinus Smasher (colossal beam attack from his arm cannons), Blaster (mouth beam), Welsh Sonic Blaster, Boosted Gear Gift (transfers boosted power), Dividing Wyvern Fairy (creates dividing wyvern drones), various Triaina forms (arm-cannon variations).
Story Arc: Survives the Fallen Angel crisis (Volume 1). Defeats Riser Phoenix in a Rating Game challenge to break Rias's arranged marriage (Volume 2). Battles the Holy Sword Project and Kokabiel (Volumes 3-4). Defeats the copied Excalibur with his newly awakened Balance Breaker. Fights Loki and Fenrir in Kyoto alongside Vali (Volumes 5-6). Participates in the Azazel Cup Rating Game against Sairaorg, growing tremendously (Volumes 9-10). Is killed by Rizevim's forces but resurrected by Great Red and Ophis who rebuild his body with Dragon God flesh (Volume 12). Achieves Dragon Deification and defeats the Qlippoth forces. Participates in the international Rating Game tournament in Shin DxD. Ascends to become a High-class Devil King with his own peerage. Is recognized across the supernatural world as one of the most powerful beings alive, earning the title "Harem King" as a genuine political and military power.
Trivia: His name means "one rock" in Japanese, reflecting his stubborn, immovable nature. The Boosted Gear draws inspiration from the Welsh Red Dragon of Arthurian legend. Issei is voiced by Yuki Kaji in the anime. His catchphrases include "Oppai wa seigi" (Boobs are justice), "I'm going to be the Harem King!", and various breast-related exclamations.
- #19The Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess — King of the Occult Research Clubselective
Keys: Rias, Power of Destruction, Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess, heiress, Extinguished Star, Ruin Princess, Gremory, King, Rias Gremory, Redhead, President, Buchou
Rias Gremory is the main female lead and primary love interest of High School DxD. She is a third-year student at Kuoh Academy, president of the Occult Research Club, and the heiress of the Gremory family, one of the most prestigious of the 72 Pillar noble houses. Known throughout the Underworld as the "Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess" for her long, flowing crimson hair and devastating power, she is the most popular girl at school—beautiful, intelligent, wealthy, and kind.
Personality: Rias presents an elegant, mature, and composed demeanor befitting a noble lady. She is caring and maternal toward her peerage, whom she explicitly considers her family rather than servants. She has a playful, teasing side, especially toward Issei—she enjoys flustering him and being seductive. She is fiercely protective and will annihilate anyone who threatens those she loves. Despite her noble upbringing, she is not snobbish; she genuinely values people for who they are. She has a competitive streak, especially with Sona Sitri (her childhood friend and rival). She is politically astute but sometimes struggles between her duty as a noble and her personal desires.
Relationships: Issei Hyoudou is her Pawn, lover, and fiancé. She revives him with all 8 Pawn pieces—an unprecedented event that shocks the Underworld because it signals extraordinary potential. She falls in love with Issei because he sees her as a person, not a noble, and because he grows to match her ideals of strength and kindness. She accepts his proposal at her graduation, becoming his first official girlfriend. She allows his harem ambition, with the condition that he always returns to her. Her brother Sirzechs Lucifer (one of the Four Maous) dotes on her. She shares a close bond with her Queen Akeno, who is her best friend. Her parents, Zeoticus and Venelana, are loving and supportive.
Abilities: Possesses the Gremory family's inherited Power of Destruction—a crimson energy that disintegrates matter at a fundamental level, inherited from the Bael bloodline through her mother Venelana. She can shape it into orbs, beams, and barriers. Her signature attack is Extinguished Star—compressing Power of Destruction into a small sphere that creates a magnetic pull drawing enemies in before it detonates into annihilation. She uses magic circles for teleportation, communication, and combat. She is a High-class Devil, later ascending to Ultimate-class in Shin DxD. She is also skilled in demonic magic, barrier creation, and aerial combat.
Battle Record: Loses her first Rating Game against Riser Phoenix (due to his regeneration). Defeats the copy of Riser's peerage. Plays a supporting role against Kokabiel. Defeats Diodora Astaroth's peerage in a Rating Game, avenging Asia. Fights in the Three Factions war against Qlippoth. Grows significantly through training and battles, eventually surpassing her initial limits. Develops new applications of Power of Destruction.
Story Arc: Meets Issei when he is a human, saves Raynare's victim, and chooses to revive him. Orchestrates Issei's training and integration into the supernatural world. Breaks her arranged marriage to Riser Phoenix through Issei's victory (Volume 2). Graduates from Kuoh Academy (Volume 10) and transfers club presidency to Asia. Becomes more involved in Underworld politics as Gremory heiress. After Issei's death and resurrection, she becomes even more devoted. Moves into the Hyoudou household. In Shin DxD, she manages her growing territory and continues supporting Issei's rise.
Appearance: Tall with a mature, voluptuous figure, long crimson hair, and blue eyes. Often wears the Kuoh Academy uniform, elegant dresses, or her devil noble attire. She has a striking presence that commands attention. Her beauty is legendary at Kuoh Academy—she is considered untouchable by male students.
Trivia: Her name comes from "Rias" from the character of the same name and Gremory from a Goetic demon. Her brother Sirzechs is named after Char Aznable and Zechs Merquise from Gundam. Rias is voiced by Yoko Hikasa in the anime. She consistently ranks among the most popular female characters in DxD polls.
- #20The Holy Maiden with Twilight Healing — Healer of the Peerageselective
Keys: Argento, Bishop, Fafnir, Twilight Healing, Sprite Dragon, Asia, Blonde, Church Trio, healer, Dragon User, nun, Asia Argento, Rassei
Asia Argento is the kind-hearted blonde German Bishop of Rias's peerage and one of the most gentle characters in DxD. She was raised as a nun in a Catholic Church orphanage, developing a pure, selfless soul that makes her willing to heal anyone regardless of who they are. She possesses the Longinus-class Sacred Gear Twilight Healing, a set of rings capable of curing any wound, illness, or curse by transferring damage to herself or simply willing it away through her faith.
Personality: Asia is extraordinarily kind, naive, and pure-hearted. She trusts people easily, forgives her enemies, and cries for others' suffering. She is gentle and soft-spoken but possesses surprising inner strength and resolve when her friends are threatened. She struggles with her faith after becoming a devil—praying and reading the Bible now gives her headaches since God is dead, yet she still clings to her beliefs. She is innocent about romance but deeply in love with Issei. She becomes jealous when other girls get close to him but is too pure to express it in an aggressive way. She acts as the emotional heart of the peerage, providing comfort and care to everyone.
Backstory: Orphaned as a child, Asia was raised by the Church and discovered her Twilight Healing ability. The Church used her healing powers to treat nobles and religious figures. She was tricked by Diodora Astaroth into healing him, and the Church excommunicated her as a "witch" for using her power to heal a devil. She traveled to Japan seeking a new life and met Issei, who became her first true friend. Raynare manipulated Asia into trusting her, stole the Twilight Healing rings, and killed Asia. Rias revived her as a Bishop, making her a devil despite her pure faith.
Relationships: Issei is her most important person—the first person who accepted her unconditionally. She loves him deeply and wants to be his wife. She is part of the "Church Trio" with Xenovia Quarta and Irina Shido, fellow former Church members who became supernatural beings. She is close with Ravel and Rossweisse. She treats Rias with deep gratitude and respect for saving her. She is the mother figure of the peerage, often mediating conflicts and providing emotional support.
Abilities: Twilight Healing Longinus—rings that can heal any injury or illness, including fatal wounds. She can also transfer damage from others to herself as a healing medium. She later becomes a Dragon User, contracting with Fafnir the Golden Dragon King. Fafnir provides her with golden dragon armor and combat abilities, transforming her from a pure support role into a capable fighter. She commands Rassei, her baby Sprite Dragon familiar that she raised from an egg. She balances Bishop magic with her healing and dragon power.
Story Arc: Heals Issei during early battles, earning his gratitude and friendship. Is captured by the Fallen Angels and killed by Raynare (Volume 1). Resurrected as a Bishop, she struggles with her new existence as a devil (Volume 2). Develops feelings for Issei. Participates in the Kyoto arc (Volumes 5-6). Receives Fafnir as a contracted dragon, dramatically increasing her combat power (Volume 7+). Becomes president of the Occult Research Club after Rias and Akeno graduate (Volume 10). Continues growing as both healer and fighter in the later arcs and Shin DxD.
Trivia: Asia's name is Italian, but she is German. Her character represents the theme of faith and doubt in the series. She is voiced by Azumi Asakura in the anime. Despite her gentle personality, she has a fierce temper when someone harms Issei or her friends.
- #21The Priestess of Thunder — Queen of the Peerageselective
Keys: fallen angel, Queen, Baraqiel, Raikouryuu, Akeno Himejima, Akeno, sadist, Himejima Akeno, shrine maiden, Holy Lightning, Fallen Angel Mode, Priestess of Thunder
Akeno Himejima is the black-haired vice-president of the Occult Research Club and Rias's Queen—the most versatile and powerful piece in the peerage. She presents a flawless Japanese beauty persona: elegant, graceful, soft-spoken, and always wearing a serene smile. This masks a deeply complex personality shaped by her mixed heritage as the daughter of a fallen angel and a human shrine maiden.
Personality: Akeno is a study in contrasts. On the surface, she is the perfect Yamato Nadeshiko—gentle, cultured, and refined. Behind closed doors, she is a sadist who becomes sexually aroused during combat, especially when she is dominating opponents. She openly flirts with Issei, teases him mercilessly, and makes lewd jokes with a straight face. She has a dark sense of humor about her own trauma. She is fiercely protective of those she loves and uses her sadistic streak to break enemies psychologically before destroying them. She craves acceptance due to her mixed-race background and fears rejection deeply.
Backstory: Akeno is the daughter of Baraqiel, a high-ranking fallen angel who was once the Governor-General of Grigori, and a human shrine maiden who died when Akeno was young. After her mother died, Baraqiel left Akeno to be raised by distant relatives who despised her for her mixed blood. She grew up isolated and shunned for her fallen angel heritage. Rias found her, befriended her, and eventually made her a devil, giving her the family and acceptance she had always craved. This is why Akeno's loyalty to Rias is absolute.
Relationships: Issei is the first person besides Rias who fully accepts her mixed heritage. When she shows him her black-and-white wings (half-angel, half-fallen angel), he embraces her without hesitation, causing her to fall deeply in love with him. She openly tells Issei she wants to be with him and doesn't care about being "third" after Rias and Asia. Rias is her best friend and savior—she would die for Rias without question. She has a strained relationship with her father Baraqiel but is slowly reconciling. She is maternal toward the younger peerage members.
Abilities: Akeno wields lightning as her primary offensive element, inherited from her father Baraqiel. She initially uses demonic lightning through her devil powers. After accepting her fallen angel heritage and falling in love with Issei, she develops Holy Lightning—a fusion of Holy Light (from her fallen angel side) and demonic lightning (from her devil side), creating something unique and devastating. Her combat forms include a shrine maiden battle outfit reminiscent of her mother's heritage. She later creates Raikouryuu, an Eastern dragon made of pure lightning that can act independently in combat. She has Fallen Angel Mode, increasing her Holy Lightning output. As Queen, she possesses balanced stats in power, speed, and magic.
Battle Record: Defeats multiple Fallen Angels in early arcs. Provides lightning support against Kokabiel. Fights alongside the peerage in major battles. Develops Holy Lightning during the Kyoto arc and defeats a copy of herself. Participates in the Rating Game against Sairaorg and later tournaments. Her massive lightning AOE attacks make her invaluable in large-scale battles.
Story Arc: Introduced as the serene vice-president. Her trauma is explored during the Fallen Angel arc and finally cathartically addressed after Issei accepts her wings. She passes the Middle-class Devil exam. She graduates with Rias (Volume 10). Takes on more responsibility in the Underworld. Fights in the Qlippoth war. Continues developing new lightning techniques in Shin DxD.
Appearance: Long black hair, purple eyes, and a mature figure. She wears the Kuoh Academy uniform elegantly and can shift to a shrine maiden outfit (red and white) for her mother's legacy during combat. She is considered the second most beautiful girl at Kuoh after Rias.
Trivia: Her name is written with characters meaning "bright field." Her father Baraqiel means "lightning of God" in Hebrew. Akeno is voiced by Shizuka Itou in the anime. Her sadistic battle persona is one of the most popular aspects of her character in fan polls.
- #22The Nekomata Rook — Silent Strongest Fistselective
Keys: Kuroka, Rook, Toujou Koneko, nekomata, nekoshou, Koneko Toujou, white hair, Shirone, loli, youkan, Koneko, Senjutsu, Touki, cat youkai
Koneko Toujou (birth name Shirone) is Rias's petite, white-haired Rook—the strength and defense specialist of the peerage. She is a first-year student at Kuoh Academy and appears as a quiet, expressionless, emotionless girl who bluntly insults Issei's perversion and eats copious amounts of sweets, especially youkan (sweet bean jelly). Beneath her cold exterior lies a traumatized nekoshou (cat youkai) who lost her family and found a new one.
Personality: Koneko presents an emotionless, monotone, and deadpan facade. She is blunt to the point of rudeness, especially toward Issei's perverted behavior. She loves snacking and is perpetually seen with food. She has a cat-like personality: aloof, independent, and prone to napping. Underneath this, she is deeply insecure, afraid of her own power (having killed her master), and terrified of losing control. She craves affection but doesn't know how to express it. Through Issei's influence, she slowly opens up, developing tsundere tendencies—denying her feelings while showing subtle affection. She bickers with Ravel (a cat-bird rivalry joke) but they become close friends.
Backstory: Koneko is a nekoshou (also called nekomata)—a high-level cat youkai with two tails that signify her power. She and her older sister Kuroka were raised by a devil master who tried to exploit them. Kuroka killed their master in self-defense and became a SS-class stray devil, leaving Koneko to face the consequences alone. Koneko was sentenced to death for Kuroka's crimes, but Sirzechs Lucifer intervened and saved her. Rias took Koneko into her peerage. Koneko was originally named Shirone but chose the name Koneko ("kitten") to distance herself from her past.
Relationships: Issei slowly breaks through her emotional walls by treating her as a person rather than a monster. She develops romantic feelings for him, shown through subtle acts of care, jealous glares at other girls, and eventually openly sitting on his lap. Kuroka is her estranged sister—Koneko resents Kuroka for abandoning her but ultimately reconciles after Kuroka proves her love. Rias is her savior and mother figure. She is protective of the peerage she considers family. She is jealous of Ravel's closeness with Issei but they become close friends despite bickering.
Abilities: As a Rook, Koneko has immense physical strength and durability—she can throw cars, punch through walls, and withstand powerful attacks. She initially relies purely on her Rook-enhanced physical abilities. Later, she develops Senjutsu (Eastern life energy manipulation learned from youkai tradition), allowing her to sense and disrupt life forces. She masters Touki (fighting spirit armor), which compounds her already monstrous physical power with ki reinforcement. She combines Senjutsu and Rook strength to devastating effect. Her familiar is Shiro, a small white cat. She can switch to a cat-like combat mode. As a nekoshou, she has enhanced senses, agility, and reflexes.
Battle Record: Uses pure strength in early battles. Begins developing Senjutsu during the Kyoto arc. Masters Touki and becomes a frontline powerhouse. Defeats powerful opponents through overwhelming physical force. Participates in the Rating Game against Sairaorg's peerage. Fights in the Qlippoth war. Grows from a simple brawler into a Senjutsu master capable of fighting high-class enemies.
Story Arc: Introduced as the silent snack-obsessed Rook. Her backstory with Kuroka is gradually revealed. She confronts Kuroka in Kyoto. Develops Senjutsu with guidance from Kuroka. Reconciles with Kuroka during the Qlippoth arc. Opens up to Issei and the peerage over time. Grows into a powerful Senjutsu user and a core combatant of the peerage.
Appearance: Short white hair, red eyes, petite build. She is the smallest of the female main cast. She wears the Kuoh Academy uniform or casual clothes with cat motifs. Has two cat tails that she usually keeps hidden.
Trivia: Her favorite food is youkan. She is based on the Japanese nekomata folklore. She is voiced by Ayana Taketatsu in the anime (known for playing tsundere/quiet characters). The name "Shirone" means "white root/nekomata." Despite her appearance, she is extremely strong—consistently the physically strongest of the peerage.
- #23The Knight of Sword Birth — Prince of Kuohselective
Keys: Sword Birth, Gram, demon sword, Knight, Sword of Betrayer, holy sword project, Kiba Yuuto, Kiba, Flame Delete, Holy Eraser, prince, Yuuto Kiba, Berserker
Yuuto Kiba is the handsome, blonde second-year student who serves as Rias's Knight—the speed specialist of her peerage. He is idolized by female students and envied by male students at Kuoh Academy, earning the title "Prince of Kuoh." Behind his perfect princely image lies the sole survivor of the Church's horrific Holy Sword Project, a childhood of unimaginable suffering, and a burning desire for vengeance that he must learn to temper.
Personality: Kiba presents a cool, charming, and reliable demeanor. He is always polite, kind, and helpful—the perfect gentleman. He is a loyal friend and a dependable comrade. He has a hidden dark side from his traumatic past: a berserk rage when facing those connected to the Holy Sword Project. He struggles with his desire for revenge versus the peaceful life Rias has given him. He is initially jealous of Issei's pure-hearted ability to use the Boosted Gear (since Kiba's power comes from a place of pain), but eventually overcomes this and becomes Issei's closest male friend and rival.
Backstory: Kiba was one of many children taken by the Church for the Holy Sword Project—a horrific experiment implanting Excalibur fragments into children to artificially create holy sword wielders. All the other children died in agony as their bodies rejected the fragments. Kiba was the sole survivor, escaping with his life but carrying the souls of his fallen comrades within him. Rias found him and offered him a new life as a devil, which he accepted. The souls of his dead friends are crystallized and later become the power source for his Balance Breaker, the Sword of Betrayer.
Relationships: Issei is his closest male friend and rival. Kiba initially resents Issei's natural growth but becomes his biggest supporter. He is protective of the peerage as a brother figure. He has a close bond with Xenovia (fellow sword wielder). He has a rivalry with Siegfried of the Hero Faction, later inheriting Gram after Siegfried's defeat. He deeply respects Rias for saving him. Unlike the other male characters, Kiba is not interested in Issei's harem antics and is often the straight man.
Abilities: His Sacred Gear is Sword Birth, which allows him to generate swords with various magical properties from thin air. He can create dozens of swords simultaneously, attack and defend with blade formations, and manifest specific sword types: Holy Eraser (devours holy light), Flame Delete (ice sword that extinguishes fire), and various elemental blades. His Balance Breaker is Sword of Betrayer—a massive holy-and-demonic sword forged from the crystallized souls of his fallen comrades, powered by their desire for revenge and justice. It can obliterate anything it cuts and adapts to opponents. After defeating Siegfried, Gram the demonic sword (a cursed, berserk sword with a will of its own) accepts Kiba as its master, granting him even greater destructive power but requiring careful control to avoid berserking.
Battle Record: Fights against Fallen Angels in early volumes. Defeats Freed Sellzen who had merged with Excalibur fragments. Plays a key role in the Holy Sword arc. Fights alongside Xenovia against Hero Faction members. Defeats Siegfried and inherits Gram. Participates in Rating Games as a high-speed assassin-type fighter. Becomes vice-president of the Occult Research Club after Akeno graduates.
Story Arc: Introduced as the perfect prince. His dark past is revealed during the Holy Sword arc. He confronts Valper Galilei (the Holy Sword Project mastermind) and achieves Sword of Betrayer. Befriends Issei after overcoming his jealousy. Fights Siegfried in the Hero Faction arc. Inherits Gram. Passes the Middle-class Devil exam. Takes on more leadership in the peerage after seniors graduate.
Appearance: Blonde hair, golden-brown eyes, tall and lean build. Consistently described as the most handsome male at Kuoh. Wears the male Kuoh Academy uniform with style. His swords appear in various styles: European longswords, Japanese katanas, and the massive Sword of Betrayer.
Trivia: Ishibumi created Kiba specifically for female readers, designing him as the classic bishounen love interest archetype. Kiba's name means "fangs." His Sacred Gear references the birth of weapons. He is voiced by Junji Majima in the anime.
- #24The Holy Sword Warrior — Strongest Knightselective
Keys: Knight, Ex-Durandal, Quarta, Church Trio, blue hair, holy sword, exorcist, Durandal, strongest knight, Excalibur, Xenovia Quarta, Xenovia
Xenovia Quarta is a blue-haired (with green highlights) former exorcist who becomes one of Rias's Knights. Raised as a weapon by the Church from childhood, she is blunt, socially awkward, and startlingly direct—she has zero concept of social norms, subtlety, or romance. She wields the legendary holy sword Durandal, which can cut through anything, and later combines it with Excalibur fragments to create Ex-Durandal. She is honest to a fault, speaking her mind without any filter.
Personality: Xenovia is straightforward to the point of absurdity. She openly announces her desire to bear Issei's child for "strong genetics," proposes a threesome with Asia as a "practical arrangement," and evaluates everything in terms of combat efficiency. She lacks social grace but is not malicious—she simply doesn't understand social conventions. She is deeply loyal, hardworking, and takes everything with deadly seriousness. She has a hidden emotional side; she cries openly about her faith crisis when learning God is dead. She is competitive, proud of her swordsmanship, and constantly seeks to improve.
Backstory: Xenovia was raised by Griselda Quarta (a swordswoman who later became an angel) in the Church's exorcist program. She was trained to wield holy swords from childhood and was considered a prodigy due to her natural holy sword compatibility—she has the "holy sword genes" that allow her to wield swords without artificial implantation (unlike the Holy Sword Project victims). She was sent with Irina to Japan to retrieve the stolen Excalibur fragments. After learning God is dead and being branded a heretic for befriending devils, she was exiled from the Church and joined Rias's peerage.
Relationships: Issei confuses and fascinates her. She initially sees him as a specimen for producing strong offspring, but genuinely falls for him over time. She is part of the "Church Trio" with Asia and Irina—the three former Church members. She has a close partnership with Kiba, the other Knight. She respects Rias as her King but has no concept of noble deference. She initially despised Asia as a "witch" but became her closest friend. She is blunt with everyone regardless of rank.
Abilities: Xenovia wields Durandal, a holy sword legendary for being able to cut through anything—no barrier, armor, or defense can stop it. She later fuses Durandal with multiple Excalibur fragments to create Ex-Durandal, which can transform into any of the seven Excalibur forms (Destruction, Mimic, Nightmare, Transparency, Rapidly, Ruler, and Blessed). After Cao Cao shatters Ex-Durandal, Arthur Pendragon gives her the final Excalibur fragment, allowing her to master six of the seven Excalibur abilities. As a Knight, she has super speed and agility in addition to her sword power. She develops techniques combining her swords with her Knight traits to deliver devastating speed-enhanced slashes.
Battle Record: Fights alongside the peerage starting from the Holy Sword arc. Battles Hero Faction members. Defeats various opponents with Durandal's unstoppable cutting power. Participates in Rating Games. Her Ex-Durandal form dramatically increases her versatility. Fights in the Qlippoth war and later tournaments. Becomes student council president after Sona graduates.
Story Arc: Introduced as an antagonist exorcist hunting devils (Volume 3). Joins Rias after her faith crisis (Volume 4). Becomes part of the Church Trio. Fights in every major battle. Masters Ex-Durandal. Becomes student council president. Deepens her relationship with Issei. Develops from a pure weapon into a person with her own desires beyond combat.
Appearance: Blue hair with green highlights, usually worn in a ponytail. Tall, athletic build. Often wears revealing clothing (she sees no reason to cover up). Carries herself with martial confidence. Her Durandal is a massive sword she swings effortlessly.
Trivia: Xenovia is based on the historical Saint Joan of Arc (her name references the Quarta family which cared for Joan). She is voiced by Asuka Nishi in the anime. Despite her stern exterior, she has surprisingly tender moments with Asia and Issei.
- #25Issei's Childhood Friend Angelselective
Keys: angel, twintails, Irina Shido, childhood friend, Church Trio, Ace, Hauteclere, Excalibur Mimic, Irina, Shido Irina
Irina Shido is Issei's childhood friend and a former exorcist who becomes an angel. She has twintail hair and was a tomboy as a child who used to play with Issei and treat him like a younger brother. She later moved away and was raised by the Church as an exorcist, becoming a holy sword wielder. She bears Excalibur Mimic, a holy sword that can transform into any shape. She is saddened that Issei became a devil but still has feelings for him, leading to an awkward but loving friendship.
Personality: Irina is cheerful, energetic, and deeply faithful. She has a strong sense of justice from her Church upbringing. She is innocent and sometimes naive about worldly matters. She undergoes an internal conflict between her love for Issei and her faith as an angel—she worries that having Issei's babies would cause her to fall from grace. She is determined and brave, facing supernatural threats without hesitation. Like Xenovia, she occasionally lacks common sense about everyday life—she once spent all their money on a fake saint painting, forcing the group to survive on charity.
Backstory: Irina grew up with Issei as neighbors and childhood friends. She moved away and joined the Church, becoming an exorcist trained in holy sword use. She was sent as part of the mission to retrieve stolen Excalibur fragments alongside Xenovia. She struggled with seeing Issei again as a devil—her childhood friend had become everything she was trained to hunt. She temporarily lost Excalibur Mimic to Freed Sellzen and retreated to Church HQ. She later chose to be baptized as an angel, gaining white wings and a new purpose.
Relationships: Issei is her childhood friend and love interest. She has complicated feelings about him being a devil while she is an angel. She is part of the Church Trio with Xenovia and Asia. - #26The Time-Stopping Dhampir — Forbidden Invade Balorselective
Keys: Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast, Vladi, Bishop, Balor, shut-in, cardboard box, vampire, Valerie, Gasper, dhampir, time stop, Gasper Vladi, Forbidden Balor View
Gasper Vladi is a cross-dressing dhampir (half-vampire, half-human) who serves as Rias's Bishop. He is initially introduced as a shut-in hiding in a cardboard box in a sealed room of the old school building, unable to control his Sacred Gear—Aeon Balor / Forbidden Balor View—which freezes time within his field of vision. He is androgynous, often mistaken for a girl, and wears feminine clothing (which Rias provides). His journey from anxious recluse to one of the most powerful beings in the series is a central character arc.
Personality: Gasper is initially terrified of everything, stuttering, hyperventilating, and hiding in enclosed spaces. He has crippling social anxiety and low self-esteem from being shunned as a dhampir. He develops an attachment to Issei, who is the first person to treat him normally and encourage him. After drinking Issei's blood, he becomes partially addicted to it and gains better control over his power. He slowly grows more confident, especially when protecting those he loves. When enraged, he transforms into an all-consuming darkness that destroys everything around him. Despite his anxiety, he is fiercely loyal and will fight beyond his limits for his friends.
Backstory: Gasper is the son of a vampire lord and a human mother, making him a dhampir—despised by pure-blood vampires. His father Vlad infused him with the consciousness of Balor, an original Celtic god of death (the evil eye god), intending to create a powerful weapon. Unable to control the time-stopping power of Balor within him, Gasper was sealed away by Rias to prevent him from accidentally freezing the world. He lived alone in a box for years until Issei came.
Relationships: Issei is his first true friend and the person who draws him out of his shell. Gasper becomes fiercely protective of Issei and calls him "Issei-san." Rias saved him and gave him a home. Valerie Tepes is his childhood friend—a pure-blood vampire princess who possesses Sephiroth Graal. When Gasper returns to Romania, he finds Valerie mentally broken by her brother Marius who exploited her immortality power. Gasper kills Marius and frees Valerie. He develops romantic feelings for Valerie.
Abilities: Forbidden Balor View / Aeon Balor—his Longinus-class Sacred Gear that freezes time. Initially, he can only freeze time within his visual field. After growing, he can freeze time over larger areas. Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast is his evolved form, considered a candidate for the 14th Longinus. In this form, he unleashes an endless all-consuming darkness that devours everything, including Dimension Lost's mist and space itself. He generates Balor-like projections from his darkness. He also has vampiric traits: superhuman strength, regeneration, hypnosis, and blood drinking. He can transform into a bat-like form.
Battle Record: Unable to fight in early volumes. His untamed power stops time involuntarily. He gains control and fights in the Qlippoth war. His Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast form defeats multiple Tepes vampires. He becomes one of the most dangerous members of the peerage in later volumes.
Story Arc: Introduced as a box-dwelling shut-in (Volume 4). Befriends Issei and gains partial control. Defends the peerage in early battles. Travels to Romania to confront his past (Volume 7-8). Meets Valerie and discovers her suffering. Kills Marius Tepes, fully awakening his Balor powers. Returns to the peerage as a confident, powerful fighter. Continues growing into the 14th Longinus candidate.
Appearance: Golden eyes, short blonde hair, androgynous face, feminine build. Often wears a Gothic lolita-style dress. Has a pair of bat-like wings. Carries a stuffed bat or hides in boxes. When using his power, his eyes glow and his shadow becomes monstrous.
Trivia: Gasper is one of the few male characters in the main peerage. His cross-dressing is accepted by the peerage without question. His name references the biblical Gaspar (one of the Three Wise Men) and Vlad the Impaler. He is voiced by Ayana Taketatsu in the anime (same as Koneko). His relationship with Valerie is one of the series' romantic subplots.
- #27The Valkyrie Rook — Norse Magic Specialistselective
Keys: Gondul, Norse, Valkyrie school, silver hair, discount store, Rook, Valkyrie, Odin, Norse magic, Rossweisse, 100-Yen Shop Valkyrie
Rossweisse is a silver-haired Valkyrie from Norse mythology who becomes Rias's second Rook. Persuaded by Rias to join the peerage, she becomes a teacher at Kuoh Academy teaching Norse magic and defensive barrier techniques. She is beautiful, intelligent, and powerful—but deeply bitter about her romantic life and absurdly frugal.
Personality: Rossweisse is intelligent, studious, and professional as a teacher and Valkyrie. She takes her duties seriously and is responsible to a fault. However, she has a deeply bitter and sometimes hysterical side about her lack of romantic success—she flies into a rage when teased about being single past 20, and this bitterness is a running gag. She is extremely frugal, earning the nickname "100-Yen Shop Valkyrie" because she buys everything from discount stores. She speaks in an unpolished, countrified dialect when talking to her grandmother Gondul, revealing her rural roots. She gradually warms from professional formality to genuine affection for the peerage.
Backstory: Rossweisse comes from a line of Valkyries serving Odin in Valhalla. She trained as a Valkyrie and became Odin's bodyguard. Her grandmother Gondul is a legendary Valkyrie. She was assigned to accompany Odin to the Three Factions summit in Japan, but Odin left her behind (forgetting her or not wanting to deal with the paperwork). Stranded and jobless, she was recruited by Rias. She initially took a teaching position at Kuoh while considering her options, but grew attached to the peerage and accepted the Rook piece.
Relationships: Issei becomes her love interest after he agrees to pose as her boyfriend for her grandmother Gondul's visit, a farce that becomes genuine. Odin is her former employer whom she resents for abandoning her but still respects. Rias gave her a new life and is her King. She sends money to support Gondul in their barren Norse homeland. She becomes close friends with the other peerage women. She dotes on Ophis as a teaching assistant.

- #29The Governor-General of Grigori — Mentor to the Peerageselective
Keys: researcher, club advisor, fallen angel, Governor-General, mentor, artificial Sacred Gear, pervert, Down Fall Dragon Spear, Grigori, Azazel, Down Fall Dragon Another Armor
Azazel is the Governor-General of the Fallen Angels (Grigori) who becomes the Occult Research Club's advisor and a teacher at Kuoh Academy. He is a laid-back, perverted, genius intellectual obsessed with Sacred Gear research. Despite leading one of the Three Factions, he dislikes fighting—he was the primary reason fallen angels retreated first from the Great War, prioritizing preservation over conquest. He is one of the most intelligent characters in the series, responsible for creating artificial Sacred Gears, advancing Sacred Gear theory, and mentoring Issei.
Personality: Azazel presents a carefree, perverted facade, openly hitting on female characters and making inappropriate jokes. He is tolerated because of his invaluable knowledge and power. Beneath this layer, he is a brilliant scientist, a strategic mastermind, and a genuinely wise mentor. He is pragmatic and dislikes pointless bloodshed. He creates multiple artificial Sacred Gears: Down Fall Dragon Spear (seals Fafnir), Down Fall Dragon Another Armor (golden dragon armor Balance Breaker form), and Blazer Shining Aura Darkness Blade. His artificial Sacred Gears are powerful enough to match natural ones. He also creates various technological devices for supernatural use. He is a master of analysis, strategic planning, and magical theory. He loses his left arm fighting Cattleya Leviathan, replacing it with a prosthetic arm that doubles as a research tool.
Leadership:* As Governor-General of Grigori, he led the fallen angels for centuries. He established Grigori as a research-oriented organization rather than a military force. He signed the Three Factions truce and worked to maintain peace. His legacy includes the artificial Sacred Gear research program and the rebuilding of fallen angel society as a scientific power.

- #30The Infinite Dragon Godselective
Keys: snake, Ophis, Black-haired girl, Great Red, Ouroboros Dragon, Dimensional Gap, Chaos Brigade, Infinite Dragon God, dragon god
Ophis, the Ouroboros Dragon / Infinite Dragon God, is one of the two most powerful beings in existence (alongside Great Red). She surpasses the Biblical God and Devil Kings combined. She can take humanoid form as a black-haired girl with a blank expression. She organized the Khaos Brigade to kill Great Red and reclaim the Dimensional Gap. She is naive, childlike, and not evil—just single-minded. Great Red saves her and together they help rebuild Issei's body using her power and Great Red's flesh, giving Issei Dragon God traits. She moves into the Hyoudou residence to "observe" Issei, developing fondness for him as her first true friend. She enjoys tea and cards with Asia and Irina. Keys: White Dragon Emperor, Emperor Juggernaut Overdrive, Vanishing Dragon, Divine Dividing, battle maniac, Albion, rival, Vali, Vali Lucifer, Hakuryuukou, Diabolos Dragon
Vali Lucifer is Issei's eternal rival and occasional ally. He is the grandson of the original Lucifer, making him a descendant of the original Devil Kings with immense innate power. He possesses the Longinus Divine Dividing, housing Albion the White Dragon of Supremacy—the eternal rival of Ddraig. His core ability is Divide—halving the power of any target every 10 seconds. He also has Half Dimension, which divides space itself. His forms progress from Scale Mail (Balance Breaker) through Juggernaut Drive (berserk form), Emperor Juggernaut Overdrive (controlled version), to Diabolos Dragon (his ultimate form fully merging with Albion, vastly surpassing normal limits). Vali is a pure battle maniac who lives for strong opponents and has no interest in politics, ideology, or good versus evil. He leads the Vali Team within the Khaos Brigade but operates entirely on his own terms, seeking only the thrill of combat and the path to becoming the strongest existence. He and Issei develop mutual respect through battles, pushing each other to greater heights. Vali is cool, arrogant, and dismissive of weakness but respects determination and growth in others.

Sirzechs Lucifer is Rias's older brother, one of the Four Great Devils (Maou), and considered the most powerful of them. Nicknamed the "Crimson Satan" for his crimson Gremory hair and overwhelming destructive power, he is a Super Devil—a genetic mutation so extreme that he barely qualifies as a devil anymore. He possesses the Power of Destruction at a level far exceeding Rias, able to control dozens of destruction orbs simultaneously with surgical precision. His signature technique Ruin the Extinct is a precisely controlled destruction that annihilates only the target with zero collateral damage, demonstrating his mastery. His true form, Human-Shaped Aura of Destruction, compresses his vast demonic power into the shape of a human—this form is said to be ten times more powerful than the original Lucifer. He was chosen as Maou specifically because his power can nullify any magical attack through sheer destructive force. Despite this terrifying power, Sirzechs is warm, kind, and deeply caring toward Rias, Issei, and his family. He is married to Grayfia Lucifuge (his Queen) and has a son named Millicas. His peerage includes Enku (a Qilin-like being as a Pawn), Souji Okita (Knight, legendary swordsman), Surtr Second (Rook, descendant of Surtr), Bahamut (Rook, dragon), MacGregor Mathers (Bishop, Golden Dawn founder), and Beowulf (Pawn, legendary hero). His name is a combination of Char Aznable and Zechs Merquise from Gundam.

Keys: Millicas, Queen, Lucifuge, Grayfia, Strongest Queen, Sirzechs' wife, Grayfia Lucifuge, Silver-Haired Queen, Gremory maid, Super Devil, ice magic
Grayfia Lucifuge is Sirzechs Lucifer's wife and his Queen, also serving as the head maid of the Gremory household. She comes from the House of Lucifuge—pure-blooded Extra Demons who served the original Lucifer, a line even more elite than the 72 Pillars. She is a devil on par with the Four Maous, known throughout the Underworld as the "Strongest Queen" and "Silver-Haired Queen of Devourer." She once challenged Serafall for the position of Leviathan, a testament to her power. She wields ice magic of tremendous, near-absolute-zero power that can freeze concepts. As a maid, she maintains an ice-cold, calm, professional, and emotionless facade. On her rare days off, she transforms into a warm, elegant high-class lady who shows genuine emotion and affection. Her romance with Sirzechs is legendary—a cross-house love story that has been adapted into a popular play in the Underworld. She is mother to Millicas and fiercely protective of her family. She serves as one of Issei's managers, helping him prepare for the Middle-class Devil exam with strict but fair tutelage.

Keys: water magic, Aurea Academy, Sitri, Sona Sitri, Sona, technique-type, Rating Game rival, Student Council President, glasses, Shitori Sona, King, Serafall's sister
Sona Sitri (school name: Sona Shitori) is the black-haired, glasses-wearing student council president of Kuoh Academy and the third most popular girl at school after Rias and Akeno. She is a High-class devil of the Sitri family, one of the 72 Pillars, and Rias's childhood friend and friendly rival. She specializes in water-based magic, using a "technique-type" strategy in Rating Games that contrasts with Rias's "power-type" approach. Her dream is to establish a formal education system for Rating Games—a school where devils of all ranks can learn strategy, magic, and combat—which she achieves as Aurea Academy, though it faces challenges. Her peerage includes: Tsubaki Shinra (Queen, Mirror Alice Sacred Gear), Genshiro Saji (Pawn, Absorption Line/Vritra), Tsubasa Yura (Rook), Tomoe Meguri (Knight, bow specialist), Momo Hanakai (Bishop), Reya Kusaka (Bishop), Ruruko Nimura (Pawn), Loup Garou (Rook, werewolf magician), and Bennia (Knight, half-Grim Reaper). She is Serafall Leviathan's younger sister and deeply embarrassed by her sister's magical girl persona. Genshiro Saji is the Student Council secretary and Sona's Pawn, reincarnated using 4 Pawn pieces. He is deeply, obsessively in love with Sona, fantasizing about accidentally impregnating her to force marriage. He is intensely jealous of Issei's relationship with Rias and his ecchi encounters, creating a rivalry between the two Pawns. He possesses the Sacred Gear Absorption Line, which holds the soul of Vritra—the Black Dragon of Domination, one of the Five Dragon Kings. His Sacred Gear was originally split into four pieces (each containing a part of Vritra's soul) but Azazel combined them to restore full power. His abilities include: Absorption Line (grabbing ropes that drain power), Blaze Black Flare (Vritra's black flames), Delete Field (darkness domain that erases matter), and Shadow Prison (dragon-shaped prison). His Balance Breaker is Vritra Promotion, a Dragon King form that enhances all his abilities but risks berserking. He later achieves Malebolge Vritra Promotion—a perfected Dragon King form combining his mind with Vritra's power, using the Underworld's strongest curses as fuel. This form rivals Dragon King-level power. He is determined to surpass Issei through sheer hard work and loyalty. He plans to become a teacher to support Sona's educational dreams.

Keys: Riser, phoenix, Yubelluna, Phoenix, regeneration, Rias's fiancé, High-class Devil, phoenix regeneration, Riser Phoenix
Riser Phoenix is a High-class devil and third son of the Phoenix family, a prestigious 72 Pillar house. He is initially engaged to Rias in an arranged marriage designed to preserve pure-blood devil lineage. His defining ability is Phoenix regeneration—instantaneous regeneration from virtually any wound, including decapitation and dismemberment. He can only be killed by mental or spiritual destruction. He has a strong Rating Game record and commands a peerage of 15 beautiful girls: Yubelluna (Queen, explosive fire magic), Ravel (his sister, Bishop), Karlamine (Knight, fire/wind), Siris (Knight, giant broadsword), Isabela (Rook), and others. He defeats Rias in their initial Rating Game through attrition (his regeneration outlasts her power), but loses to Issei in a challenge battle at the engagement party when Issei's new Balance Breaker damages his mind directly. This defeat traumatizes him, giving him a fear of dragons, and he falls into a slump. He recovers by Volume 10, participating in the battles against the Khaos Brigade. He later provides Rias with strategic Rating Game advice and warns Issei to treat Ravel well. Despite his arrogant, playboy persona, he is a capable fighter who has earned his rank.
- #37The Lion King — Strongest Young Devilselective
Keys: Lion King, Power of Destruction, Regulus Nemea, Balance Breaker, physical power, Sairaorg, friend, strongest young devil, rival, King, Bael, Sairaorg Bael
Sairaorg Bael is the crown prince of the Bael family, the strongest of the 72 Pillars. He is born without the Power of Destruction (the hereditary Bael ability), making him an embarrassment to his family. His father rejects him, his mother suffers political persecution because of his deficiency, and he is stripped of the Bael inheritance. Instead of giving up, Sairaorg dedicates his entire existence to training his body to the absolute peak of physical perfection, becoming a pure physical power-type who rivals magic-wielding devils through sheer muscle. He possesses the Longinus Regulus Nemea, housing the Lion King, which grants him a golden lion-themed Balance Breaker armor and a fierce lion companion. His physical strength is monstrous—able to destroy mountains with punches, shatter dimensions, and fight evenly with serial Balance Breaker users using just his fists. Known as the "Lion King," he is considered the strongest young devil of his generation before Issei catches up. Despite his brutal appearance, Sairaorg is intelligent, honorable, deeply caring for his peerage, and respectful toward enemies who earn his respect. He becomes Issei's friend and rival after their Rating Game battle in the Azazel Cup, respecting Issei's growth and determination. His relationship with his mother was destroyed by his father's political ambitions, motivating his desire to become Maou and reform devil society so no one suffers as he did. He represents the pinnacle of hard work overcoming natural talent.
- #38The Red Dragon Emperor — Welsh Dragon of Boosted Gearselective
Keys: dragon, Dragon Deification, Welsh Dragon, Sekiryuutei, Boosted Gear, Red Dragon Emperor, Ddraig, partner, two heavenly dragons
Ddraig is the Red Dragon Emperor, also known as the Welsh Dragon, one of the Two Heavenly Dragons who rule over all other dragons save the Dragon Gods. His soul is sealed within the Longinus Boosted Gear, making him Issei's constant telepathic companion, mentor, and partner. His primary ability is Boost—unlimited power amplification, doubling every 10 seconds without theoretical limit. He is the eternal rival of Albion, the White Dragon of Supremacy sealed in Divine Dividing. Their rivalry spans countless reincarnations across thousands of years—they have been sealed in Sacred Gears since the Biblical God discovered he could not control or kill them. Ddraig is ancient, wise, proud, sarcastic, and initially gruff with Issei, but he genuinely comes to care for him as a son-like figure. He communicates telepathically, offers combat advice, helps Issei develop new abilities like Cardinal Crimson Promotion, and holds back his full power to avoid overwhelming Issei. The Welsh Dragon of Arthurian legend, Ddraig represents the red dragon that fought the white dragon in the Mabinogion. His full unsealed power is catastrophic. Through Issei's growth, Ddraig and Albion eventually begin to set aside their eternal rivalry. Ddraig's power is the foundation for Issei's transformations, especially the Dragon Deification form which merges Ddraig's power with Great Red's flesh and Ophis's infinite energy.
- #39The White Dragon of Supremacy — Vanishing Dragonselective
Keys: dragon, Vanishing Dragon, Hakuryuukou, Vali, Albion, White Dragon of Supremacy, two heavenly dragons, Divine Dividing, Divide
Albion is the White Dragon of Supremacy, also called the Vanishing Dragon, the eternal rival of Ddraig. His soul is sealed within the Longinus Divine Dividing, currently possessed by Vali Lucifer. His primary ability is Divide—halving the power of any target every 10 seconds, capable of reducing gods to nothing. He also has Half Dimension, which divides space itself. Like Ddraig, Albion is ancient, wise, and proud. He communicates telepathically with Vali and respects his partner's battle mania. The Two Heavenly Dragons together nearly destroyed the world, forcing the Biblical God to seal them in Sacred Gears. Albion represents cold calculation, reduction, and precision against Ddraig's raw amplification. Through Vali and Issei, the two dragons start questioning their eternal hatred. Albion's full power is similarly catastrophic. His relationship with Vali is more adversarial than Ddraig's with Issei—Vali pushes Albion's power to its limits through sheer will. The final clash between Albion and Ddraig is suggested to be a destined event, but their partnership with their hosts may offer an alternative resolution.

He puts Issei through brutal training regimens to master the Boosted Gear and achieve Balance Breaker. He is massive, intimidating, and speaks in a thundering voice.
