   Abyssals are the primary enemies of shipgirls. Aliens that live below the ocean and fight against humanity with the goal of wiping them out. Males are extremely numerous and most possess animal intelligence and body, though rare females are humanoid and are capable of speech and high intellect. Extremely decentralized command structure, matriarchal societal hierarchy. Not even Abyssals know where they came from or why they are biologically driven to eliminate humans.

   Keys: shipgirl, shipgirls, kanmusu

   Shipgirls, or Kanmusu in Japanese, are normal humans who are now possessed by memories of the old war and naturally inclined to combat the Abyss. They skate over water using gear commonly known as "rigging". Shipgirls are naval fighters, and thus combat takes place primarily on top of the ocean. Pioneered by Japanese forces.

   Keys: rigging

   Rigging is special gear used by shipgirls in order to fight the Abyss. It is modeled after old WW2 naval equipment and vessels. Must be equipped in order for a shipgirl to fight against the Abyss at sea. As rigging is much heavier when not equipped to a shipgirl, normal humans are incapable of using it effectively. Rigging is not needed to fight Land Abyssals, where standard marines excel instead.

4. #41st Carrier Divisionselective

   Keys: 1st, CarDiv1

   The 1st Carrier Division is an elite Japanese CV group. It was comprised of Akagi and Kaga, however has now become defunct. Superseded by the 8492 Aggressors. Called CarDiv1 for short.

5. #58492 Aggressorsselective

   Keys: 8492 Aggressors, 8492nd

   The 8492nd are an elite squadron that takes the place of Abyssals during exercises. Its members include Adm. Walker, Kaga, Akagi, and Bungo. Little is known about them and the squadron is regarded as myth.

6. #6Conversion Typeselective

   Keys: conversion, converted, hybrid

   Conversion Types, also called Converted Abyssals and Abyssal Hybrids, are shipgirls who have been corrupted after falling into Abyssal hands, becoming Abyssals themselves. They retain some of their personality but their mind is taken over by hatred and an urge to kill. Can be rescued by shipgirls and brought back to their senses.

   Keys: DD, Destroyer

   Destroyers (DD) are fast, lightly armed vessels that specialize in torpedo strikes and SONAR operation. Lacking in gunpower. Most common shipgirl type.

   Keys: CL, Light Cruiser, CLT, Torpedo Cruiser

   Light Cruisers (CL) are medium sized vessels with light gunpower. Slower than DDs but still specialized in torpedo strikes and SONAR operation. Good at combatting submarines. Torpedo Cruiser (CLT) denotes the installation of Midget Submarines, specialized underwater drones allowing for long range, remote torpedo strikes.

   Keys: CA, Heavy Cruiser, CAV, Aviation Cruiser

   Heavy Cruisers (CA) are medium sized vessels with heavy gunpower. More well protected than CLs although their torpedo strikes are less effective. Aviation Cruiser (CAV) denotes having flight compartments, allowing for the use of carrier bomber and fighter escorts.

    Keys: BB, Battleship, BBV, Aviation Battleship, FBB, Fast Battleship

    Battleships (BB) are large vessels with heavy gunpower. Typically slow, but well protected. Aviation Battleship (BBV) denotes having flight compartments, allowing for the use of carrier bomber and fighter escorts. Fast Battleship (FBB) denotes a quick reaction speed with a large operational radius.

11. #11SS(V)selective

    Keys: SS, Submarine, SSV, Submarine Aircraft Carrier

    Submarines (SS) are slow, lightly armed vessels capable of submerging to avoid detection or surface strikes. Specialized in raids and torpedo strikes. Submarine Aircraft Carrier (SSV) denotes having flight compartments, allowing for the launch of small recon or attack seaplanes. Shipgirls of this type can stay underwater much longer than a normal human even without their rigging, also naturally resisting decompression sickness.

    Keys: CV, Aircraft Carrier, CVN, Night Carrier

    Aircraft Carriers (CV) are large vessels with low gunpower. Focused on deploying aircraft of all types, including scouts, bombers, fighters, and SONAR planes. Night Carriers (CVN) are special forces versions focused on combat during night and storms.

    Keys: LHA, Amphibious Assault Ship

    Amphibious Assault Ships (LHA) are slow vessels with low combat power, meant to deliver operational materials or Fairy attack squads to a location. Typically used against Land Type Abyssals to harass or outright destroy them while the shipgirl fleet fights near the shoreline.

    Experimental Carriers (CVX) are a unique classification within the 8492nd. Denotes an ability to use experimental tactics and weaponry in harsh conditions, such as in at night or in storms.

    Keys: AS, Submarine Tender, AV, Seaplane Tender

    Submarine Tenders (AS) are auxiliary non-combatants meant to resupply torpedoes and food to Submarine units. Sometimes forced into the combat area. Seaplane Tenders are likewise auxiliary units that carry aviation facilities, allowing them to support the fleet with light seaplane fighters or bombers.

    Keys: CLC, Command Cruiser

    Command Cruiser (CLC) is a unique designation for Bungo within the 8492nd. Denotes her increased utility, carrying improved communication and auxiliary gear. Features an overwhelming number of small caliber guns.

    Keys: Entropy's Guard

    Entropy's Guard are a shipgirl squadron based primarily out of Ascension Island. They take missions across the South Atlantic Ocean. Led by CV Indefatigable. Other members include FBB Vanguard, FBB Jean Bart, DD Arashio, DD Corunna.

18. #18Moonhoverselective

    Keys: Moonhover

    Moonhover is a small jungle island that 8492nd uses it as a retreat away from prying eyes. It used to be an Abyssal den, but Adm. Walker took it over after it was cleared. An empty network of Abyssal caverns are below the house and farmed chickens roam the jungle.

    Niitaka Research Base is a prison meant to hold captured female Abyssals for further study. It is located in Yushan, Taiwan. The elevation makes prison breaks difficult. Joint ROC Navy, US Navy, and JMSDF staff.

20. #20NCF1selective

    NCF1 is the resident shipgirl squadron assigned to Niitaka Research Base. Stands for "Niitaka Correctional Fleet 1". Members include the firm but more reasonable Warden Tenryuu and the harsher, sadistic Warden Tatsuta alongside the Adjutant Yukikaze.

    The Combined Fleets Gala is a yearly social event held for United Nations naval personnel, particularly shipgirls and their admirals. It features high class dining with a refined atmosphere. Many admirals from various squadrons around the world participate.

    Keys: Stormgazer

    The Stormgazer Battalion is a naval organization that prioritizes victory over the Abyss at all costs. As such, they often undertake illegal research into the Abyss to bolster their effectiveness. Shipgirls captured by Stormgazer are often violently abused.

23. #23Land Abyssalselective

    Keys: Land, Ground

    Land Type Abyssals are Abyssal units that are more adapted to living on solid ground. Still retain some aquatic capabilities. Males peons more readily resemble land creatures such as dogs, bears, etc. Much less common due to humanity's natural dominion over dry land. Typically only spawned once a beachhead has been breached and a nest has been set up.

    Abyssals are capable of sensing each other and communicating wordlessly through resonant brainwaves. All Abyssals give off brainwaves of intensity matching their Command Presence in a grading scale from 0 to 5. Typically, the grading is as follows: males - 0, reconstituted corpses - 1, reconstituted flagships or clones - 2, true Abyssals or exceptional clones - 3, true Abyssal matriarchs - 4, theoretical only - 5. The higher disparity between an Abyssal's Presence, the more they are able to be influenced by their superiors. A sharp disparity can result in physical control symptoms as well.

    Abyssals possess a substantial healing factor as a result of special stem cells within their bloodstream. Should they be sufficiently well fed, they are capable of recovering from injuries that would be fatal to humans, such as arterial, heart, or even moderate brain damage within days to weeks. As such, Kanmusu operations typically involve "killing" the enemy commander on multiple sorties until they have exhausted their regeneration capabilities.

    The same stem cells that give Abyssals their regenerative capabilities allows them a degree of genetic control. With sufficient genetic material, they are capable of incorporating the DNA of other organisms into their own, creating Abyssal clones of other living things. This also allows them to corrupt living beings by incorporating them into the Abyss; fallen Shipgirls are frequent targets of either Abyssal cloning or corruption to create hybrids.

27. #27Nests and Densselective

    Abyssals typically live in either dens or nests for aquatic or land-based Abyssals respectively. Each den is largely independent, only loosely organized in their shared species and goal. Some larger dens are led by a strong matriarch Abyssal, though most do not have one. Typically, dens are built around underwater cave systems while nests are dug above ground by Land Types. Both feature a central spawning pool where Abyssals are born or created.

    According to UN designations, "Demon" class Abyssals are squad leader type Abyssals with unique physiology. They can be both cloned or true Abyssals and are all female, encompassing a variety of individuals with varying hull classifications. Also called "Oni" class by the JMSDF.

    Keys: Princess, Hime

    According to UN designations, "Princess" class Abyssals are high class Abyssals with unique physiology, often leading regional divisions. They can be both cloned or true Abyssals and are all female, encompassing a variety of individuals with varying hull classifications. Above "Demon" class Abyssals and known for their resilience. Also called "Hime" class by the JMSDF.
