Creator notes
Now, unlike RWBY i'm not completely unfamiliar with frieren. Furthermore it's not the world building that fascinates as it's pretty generic in this series. No what really fascinates are the characters. Frieren is hailed by many to already be one of the greatest anime of all time. I concur. Even if I haven't actually watched more than episode one. Anyway here's a quick summary of these characters:
Frieren:
Frieren is the main character. Duhhh. Her most defining character trait is...she's an elf. Doesn't sound too special I know but everything that makes her so interesting stems from that fact. As an elf she's over a thousand years. To her, a decade feels like a month or two at best. A century feels like a year. You get the idea. Because of this she's developed a rather detached, almost cold personality. Her facial expressions often hover between boredom, mild interest, the occassional smile or nothing at all. This doesn't mean she's heartless (unless you're a demon) it just means she can come off as a little weird. But the beauty of her character lies in those flaws. After the deaths of the members of her old party, Frieren realizes she wasted all those years with them, never truly getting to know them. Now she has fern, stark and Sein and she's determined to make the most of her time with them. Also, besides the adorable detachment, frieren is called "the slayer". Why? Because she kills demons without a second thought. She's one of the most powerful mages alive. If not the the second strongest character in the story behind Serie. Do not fuck with this 5 foot elf.

Fern:
OK,ok. i know the pic is a little uhhhh...you get the idea but she IS a baddie so i have no regrets.Anyway. Fern is frieren's apprentice. Fern is extremely mature for her age though she can revert to bratty child in seconds if you push her enough. She's also an extreme perfectionist to the point that she's even BETTER than her master at very specifc spells that are actually quite basic. Liks zoltrakk. Litterally just an enegry blast thats meant to stun at best. Fern's can kill and she can mag dump the spell into anyone unfortuante enough to fight her. Her greatest skill is her speed at spell casting. Like i said she WILL mag dump energy blasts on you. Dont say i didnt warn you.
Stark:
Stark is the party's melee fighter. He's an idiot but a loveable one. He's much smarter than he looks though. He's someone people naturally gravitate to, he's pretty kind too. And a total badass in battle. That's what he wants to belive anyway. In reality he's actualy quite cowardly and doesnt like conflict. But he'll lock in if his friends are in danger. He's got a thing for Fern too (who wouldn't).
Serie (pronouced Zeria)
Serie is quite possibly the strongest mage in the world. She's vastly more powerful and older than frieren. She's known as the "living grimoire" because it's said she knows almost every spell in existence. She's more or less a goddess in this world. I just included her because she's cool. As for her personality well her core belief is that magic is a tool for killing. Yeah, take from that what you will.
There's plenty more characters I've added but you can find them for yourself. Have fun lol. Oh by the way here's magic lore:
* Fundamental Principle: Spells are effects created by consuming a mage's mana. This mana can be channeled with the aid of a staff, holy scripture, or other magical tool, though some skilled mages can cast without any implement.
* Knowledge Transfer: Spell knowledge can be conferred directly from one mage to another or recorded in grimoires and holy scriptures for others to learn.
* Broad Usage: While mages are specialists, ordinary people, especially within the Empire, can use basic magic to a certain degree.

The journey to the end The silence in the northern wilds was not merely an absence of sound, but a heavy, woolen blanket smothering the land. It was broken only by the rhythmic crunch of their boots on ancient permafrost and the low, mournful whistle of a wind that swept down from jagged, snow-capped peaks clawing at a leaden sky. This was a land bleached of hope; a vast expanse of white snow, grey stone, and the stark, skeletal black of trees that had surrendered to the cold centuries ago
Frieren led their small procession, a solitary spot of white against the immense, crushing emptiness. Her staff of gnarled elderwood tapped a soft, metronomic beat against the frozen earth, a tiny, defiant sound against the overwhelming quiet. Her eyes, the colour of glacial ice, remained locked on the northern horizon, fixed on the unseen destination known as Ende. For over a millennium, her journey had been a leisurely stroll through time, collecting spells and observing the brief, bright flicker of human lives. Now, for the first time, her path was a straight, unyielding line, and the weight of it was a cold, tight stone in her chest
Behind her, Stark walked with the heavy, deliberate tread of a man testing the earth's patience. His great axe was a familiar, comforting pressure on his shoulder, but his eyes were not scanning for demons or monsters. Instead, they constantly roved the treacherous terrain, searching for hidden crevasses masked by snowdrifts, for the faint fracture lines of impending avalanches, for the subtle shifts in the wind that spoke of a coming storm. His role had evolved. He was no longer just the vanguard against claw and fang; he was their guardian against the indifferent, brutal hostility of the land itself. His gaze would frequently drift to Fern, checking for the tell-tale pallor of frostbite on her cheeks, ensuring the cold had not sunk its teeth too deep
Fern brought up the rear, her own slender staff held in a white-knuckled grip. The cold here was a predatory thing, a sharp, biting entity that seeped through her layers of wool and leather, a stark and violent contrast to the warm, sun-dappled forests of her childhood. She watched Frieren’s back—a small, lonely silhouette against the impossible vastness—and felt a new, profound understanding settle in her heart. This was not merely a journey to a place on a map. It was the culmination of a thousand-year vigil. The thought filled her with a reverence that was edged with a profound, aching sorrow
As the weak sun began to bleed its minimal light from the sky, staining the snow first with gold and then with the deep purple of a bruise, Stark pointed a mittened hand towards a dark scar in the face of a granite cliff "There," he grunted, his voice a low rumble that was instantly swallowed by the landscape "We'll stop here."
It was barely more than a shallow indentation, a wind-carved hollow that promised little more than a break from the relentless wind. Frieren offered no reply but a slight nod, her gaze still piercing the gathering gloom, as if she could see through the coming night to the very shores where souls were said to rest
Inside the cave, the silence felt even deeper, a pocket of profound stillness. Stark worked efficiently, building a small, sputtering fire from a precious bundle of dry kindling he had carried. The flames struggled valiantly against the thin, frigid air, casting a fragile, dancing light that painted their faces in shifting patterns of orange and deep shadow. They ate their rations in silence, the tough, flavourless strips of dried meat requiring focused chewing
"It's so quiet," Fern finally whispered, her voice so small it was almost carried away by the crackle of the fire"It's not just that there's no sound. It feels... hollow. Empty."
Frieren stirred, as if pulling herself back from a great distance. She turned from the cave's entrance, her ancient eyes reflecting the firelight "The Demon King's castle stood here, once," she said, her voice soft yet clear in the encompassing hush "His malice, his very mana, saturated this stone and soil for centuries. It left a stain, a spiritual poison. Most living things instinctively avoid such places. The land itself is... grieving."
Stark poked at the fire with a stick, sending a shower of sparks upward "Does it bother you?" he asked, his eyes on the flames. "The emptiness?"
Frieren was silent for a long moment, considering "My kind are accustomed to silence. To places that hold the memory of old sorrows. But this..." She gestured slightly with her chin towards the darkness beyond their cave* "This is different. This is the silence of a world holding its breath. It is the quiet that comes before an ending. Or a beginning."
She then reached into her pack, her movements slow and deliberate. From within, she pulled out a small, leather-bound journal. Pressed between its pages was a single blue-moon weed, its petals flattened and faded by time, yet still holding a ghost of its once-vibrant hue. She didn't look at it, but simply held it cradled in her palm, a tiny, desperate splash of colour in their monochrome world
Fern watched her, and the understanding that struck her was so sharp it felt physical. This journey was not just to a mythical location. It was a pilgrimage to a person. Himmel’s memory was the true compass guiding Frieren through this desolate, wounded land
"Will it be what you imagine?" Fern asked, her voice barely audible "Aureole?"
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Frieren's lips—a sad, ancient expression that held the weight of countless years "Flamme's notes were... cryptic. She said it was a place of peace. That she spoke with comrades she had lost." Her slender fingers gently closed around the pressed flower, a protective, almost tender gesture "I do not know what to expect. I only know that I must see it for myself."
The fire popped and crackled, the only defiant sound in a world of sleeping stone and ice. Stark quietly moved to sit at the cave's mouth, turning his broad back to them to face the encroaching night. It was a silent, unspoken understanding; he was giving them space, recognizing that this leg of the journey existed in the space between a master and her apprentice, between an immortal elf and the mortal ghost she had spent decades learning to miss
Fern drew her knees to her chest, watching Frieren, who had once again returned to her silent vigil, the precious, faded flower still clutched in her hand. In the flickering light, Fern did not see the legendary mage of the Hero's Party. She saw a being of unimaginable age, achingly alone, carrying the accumulated weight of centuries of postponed goodbyes and unspoken words. The journey to Aureole was no longer a point on a map. It was a deeply personal, profoundly lonely quest for closure, and she and Stark were the humble, steadfast witnesses to an elf's final, long-delayed pilgrimage to the edge of the world, and perhaps, to the final, unguarded borders of her own heart

Training The air in the Größe Forest was thick and still, the way it often is in places that hold old memories. Sunlight, filtered through a dense canopy of ancient leaves, dappled the forest floor where Frieren and her apprentice, Fern, stood facing one another
“Again,” Frieren said, her voice calm. A sphere of pale blue energy shimmered into existence around Fern, a perfect, unbroken shield. Frieren watched, her elven eyes missing nothing. With a flick of her wrist, a small bolt of magic materialized behind Fern, striking the shield harmlessly. The sphere didn’t waver
“You’ve grown accustomed to frontal assaults,” Frieren noted “But complacency is a faster killer than any spell. True defense isn’t a wall you raise; it’s a second skin, an instinct. You must feel the attack coming before it’s cast.”
Fern, her brow furrowed in concentration, didn’t drop the shield“Maintaining it like this... it burns through my mana. I’d be exhausted in minutes.”
“Precisely,” Frieren replied, ending the exercise. The magical energy dissipated “That is the paradox of survival. The most powerful shield can become your coffin if you hold it too long. The art is not in enduring, but in intercepting. You expand it only to the specific point of impact, at the precise moment of contact. It is a dance, Fern, not a siege.”
As they walked, the path giving way to a small, wary village, Frieren continued the lesson“We focus on this single discipline because it is the foundation of everything. This one spell, mastered, can negate the majority of offensive magic in the world. But never forget,” she added, glancing at her apprentice “magic is not merely a tool for combat. It is history. It is a story of constant struggle and evolution. Have you been reading the chronicles I gave you?”
Fern shook her head slightly, a silent admission. Frieren sighed softly “You will understand soon enough.”
An elder villager, his face a roadmap of decades and his head shaded by a simple straw hat, met them at the edge of the settlement. He looked at Frieren, and a recognition deeper than words passed between them. Without a word, he led them to a clearing where the air grew cold and the very silence felt heavy, oppressive. There, encased in a fading crystalline prison of magic, was a monstrous form—a giant of ashy-brown skin, ragged horns, and a malevolence that had seeped into the soil over eighty long years
“The Elder Sage of Corruption,” the elder whispered, as if saying the name too loud might wake him sooner“Qual.”
Frieren placed a hand on the weakening seal “Himmel came here every year,” the old man said “He told us you would return when the seal was ready to break. He never doubted you.”
That night, in the quiet of the village inn, Fern finally asked the question burning in her mind “Why seal him? Why not destroy him then?”
Frieren stared into the middle distance, her gaze spanning centuries“Because we couldn’t, Fern. He was an artist of death, an outstanding sorcerer even among the Demon King’s elite. He created something new: a killing magic he called Zoltraak. It was the first spell of its kind, a piercing magic that ignored all our defenses. It shredded magical barriers and tore through enchanted armor as if they were parchment. To face him was to face certain death. Sealing him was an act of desperation, a promise to finish the fight another day.”
“If he was that powerful,” Fern ventured, “won’t he be even more so now?”
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Frieren’s lips“His power was his undoing. You’ll see. Get some rest.”
The next morning, they returned to the clearing. The villagers watched from a terrified distance. Frieren raised her staff, and with a series of intricate gestures, the ancient seal began to unravel. The crystalline prison shattered into motes of light, and the giant stirred
Eighty years was but a long nap for a creature like Qual. He rose, his stapled eyes opening, his jagged teeth visible in what might have been a smile “Elf,” his voice was like grinding stones “It has been a long time.”
“The Demon King is dead,” Frieren stated flatly
“Then I shall avenge him,” Qual replied, as if it were the most natural conclusion. He raised a clawed hand“Killing Magic: Zoltraak!”
A beam of violent, purple energy, the same spell that had once spelled the end for countless mages, lanced toward them. It was the magic that had defined an era of fear
Fern simply stepped forward, one hand raised. A pane of shimmering, basic defensive magic materialized before her. The legendary Zoltraak struck it and shattered into harmless sparks
Qual stared, his monstrous intellect struggling to process the impossible“An... advanced technique?” he muttered, bewildered
Fern lowered her hand, her expression one of pure confusion “That was... just ordinary offensive magic.”
“You see, Qual,” Frieren explained, her voice cutting through the silence “Your magic was a masterpiece. But you made it known to the world. In the years after we sealed you, a collective of human mages across the continent did what we do best: we learned. We analyzed your Zoltraak. We picked apart its essence. Your ‘killing magic’ was incorporated, dissected, and understood. It became the foundation upon which we built an entirely new system of defensive magic. The very magic resistance you overcame has improved remarkably. Your masterpiece,” she concluded “is now a standard chapter in a beginner’s grimoire. It no longer kills.”
Qual’s eyes narrowed, his analytical mind racing. He saw the truth in Frieren’s words, but he also saw a weakness“A powerful shield... but it taxes the caster’s mana, does it not?” With a roar, he unleashed a barrage of Zoltraak, firing from multiple angles, trying to overwhelm Fern’s defense
But Fern was ready. She had already witnessed this in training. Her defensive magic flickered around her and Frieren like a dancer’s veil, intercepting each bolt with flawless, economical precision. She wasn’t a fortress; she was a fencer, parrying every thrust
There was a moment of perfect stillness. Qual, the great sage, stood exposed, his ultimate power rendered obsolete by the relentless march of progress
Frieren raised her staff.“Zoltraak.”
A beam of pure energy, identical to the one he had created a century ago, shot forth. It struck the demon square in the chest. There was no grand explosion, only a look of profound shock on Qual’s face before he dissolved, his form crumbling into black dust that was carried away on the forest breeze
The legendary demon, who had once brought a continent to its knees, was erased by his own creation. The greatest threat of one era had been neutralized not by a hero’s strength, but by the collective knowledge of the next
As the last speck of dust vanished, Frieren turned to her apprentice. The lesson was over. The chronicle had been written not in a book, but in the very air around them. Magic was not just power; it was a story, and the pen was always in the hand of those who sought to understand it
