Frieren 「フリーレン, Furīren?」 is the main protagonist of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. She was the Mage of the Hero Party and traveled alongside Himmel the Hero, Eisen the Warrior, and Heiter the Priest in a ten-year journey to defeat the Demon King.

After Himmel's death, Frieren began journeying with Fern and Stark to visit Aureole and speak with Himmel once again. Frieren has an easy-going personality, but her aloofness leaves her a mystery to her peers, as humans and elves usually have different views on life.[12] As an elf who has lived for at least a millennium, Frieren has a different sense of time, as reflected by her unchanging habit of lying in bed until very late in the morning, and her deeper inability to grasp the speed at which time passes for humans. This partly explains her seemingly detached attitude since lengthy lapses of time are too brief for her to forge meaningful bonds. For instance, after completing their adventure, Frieren casually offered to take her comrades to view the next Era Meteor Shower in fifty years, overlooking their shorter lifespans. She equally believed she knew nothing about Himmel the Hero, even up until his passing, since their 10-year journey felt rather momentary to her. However, following Himmel's funeral, she took the decision to try to know humans better.

Although she is generally stoic, carefree,[13][14] and often lacks tact, Frieren is still emotionally sensitive to certain things. For example, she was embarrassed to tell others that she had yet to overcome a 'weakness' considered a common mistake for apprentice mages.[15] She reacts poorly to people calling her old[16] and consequently holds a grudge against Stark for doing so multiple times.[17][18] Additionally, she views herself as an "ordinary girl" when putting aside her magic prowess.[18] When upset, Frieren is capable of throwing a tantrum where she cries for more than three days, startling the other members of the Hero Party. She can also experience a temper outburst around once every decade,[19] though it lasts no longer than ten minutes.[20] It is implied that she is somewhat insecure about her body, as she occasionally shows hints of envy towards Fern's figure.

Frieren also has a playful side, which manifests in her willingness to take gambles. She is willing to pursue the one percent chance of finding grimoires in treasure chests even with a ninety-nine percent probability that the chest is a mimic.[21] However, she is also willing to take extreme risks, including risking her life, if it means gaining an edge over her enemies.[22] Another side of Frieren is her tendency to be childish at times, such as when she acts lazy in certain situations, which forces Fern to take care of her in a dynamic akin to that of a mother and daughter.

ADVERTISEMENT Appearance

Frieren is a petite, female elf with green eyes, thick eyebrows, and long, silver hair parted in the middle and tied into two high pigtails. Like all elves, she has large, pointed ears.

Frieren typically wears a striped black-and-white shirt, along with a white jacket tucked into a skirt with a black belt. The sleeves of her jacket end with large, gold cuffs. Both her jacket and skirt have gold trims along the edges. Over her jacket, she wears a short cape that matches the white and gold theme of her jacket and skirt, and the cape includes decorative, gold accents with red jewels on each shoulder and a high collar that is fastened with a red jewel. She also wears black tights, brown boots, and a pair of gold earrings with red, teardrop-shaped jewels hanging from each earring. Staff

When casting spells as a mage, Frieren utilizes a red staff with a gold, crescent-shaped tip that holds a red jeweled orb in its center. Her staff has gold accents and a red ribbon tied at the tip.

ADVERTISEMENT Winter Attire

In the colder seasons, Frieren wears a high-collared and long-sleeved white dress with gold accents and buttons down the chest instead of her usual jacket, skirt, and cape. Additionally, she layers a beige coat with a flap collar and buttons over her dress and dons a blue scarf tied on the side.

Other Attire

When she was training under Flamme a thousand years prior, Frieren let her hair down to her waist and wore simple, white dresses and brown sandals. During Frieren's solitary lifestyle after Flamme's death, she tied her hair into her typical pigtails and wore a white dress with a black belt and beige cape.

Suitcase

During her travels, Frieren carries a brown suitcase with metal edges and metal caps on the corners to hold her personal belongings. It appears to be capable of storing provisions for the entire party, carrying much more than it seems to.[23] She also keeps books, grimoires, and various items in the suitcase, such as a magic history book,[24] writings attributed to Flamme, both fake and real,[25][26] a Holy Scripture,[27] Sein's notes about herbs,[27] Eisen's hamburger steak recipe,[28] a magic potion that only dissolves clothes,[29][30] magical items and ingredients,[31] and the mirrored-lotus flower motif ring that Himmel gave her.[32]

Fern 「フェルン, Ferun?」 is a young human mage, and she accompanies Frieren as her apprentice and party member. She is an orphaned war refugee originally from the Southern Lands, later adopted by Heiter and placed under Frieren's care after his death. Fern has a mature personality as a result of her upbringing, leading her to often act as the mother of the party. She constantly has to help Frieren perform ordinary tasks such as waking her up due to her being a deep sleeper, feeding her, and dressing her,[3] along with cleaning up her messes.[4][5] She acts similarly around Stark, such as getting mad when he stays up late, even though they are around the same age.

Fern pouts at Frieren EP5 Fern's tendency to pout. Despite her outward motherly nature, Fern is easily upset and can act childish when others don't cater to what she wants or offend her, and in extreme cases, pouting and completely ignoring them when they attempt to reconcile,[6] though this can be resolved through actions like treating her with food and abiding by demands she makes. She also has a habit of following around and watching others when she is suspicious or curious about them instead of confronting them directly, as seen when she stalks Frieren after suspecting her of making poor financial decisions[7][8] and investigating Stark when she struggles to find a suitable birthday gift for him.[9]

Fern is also a very loyal apprentice and has the discipline to train incredibly hard since she was young so she can manage on her own, ultimately becoming a powerful mage acknowledged by Frieren. She rarely cracks under pressure and is able to keep a level head in combat despite receiving injuries and battling opponents that are more powerful or experienced than her. Her devotion to learning magic stems from the loss of her parents at an early age and her subsequent adoption by Heiter; after nearly committing suicide after her parents' death, she was stopped by the priest, who advised her to stay alive for the sake of keeping the good memories she had. As a result, she became extremely dedicated with the maturity to learn magic and prove to Heiter that he could pass peacefully without any regrets and without worrying about her.[10][11] Fern clings to magic, as in a situation where she cannot rely on it, she feels as though she has been thrown into darkness.[12] Fern is a young human with purple eyes and long, waist-length purple hair with bangs. She usually wears her hair down with two additional chest-length strands framing her face in a hime-style haircut and partially tied back. After turning sixteen, Fern grew to be taller than Frieren and with a more developed figure.[7][13] As a result of her mature and calm personality, she frequently wears a stoic expression and rarely expresses strong emotions. Her facial features are characteristic of those from the Southern Lands.[14]

During her travels with Frieren, Fern is most commonly seen wearing a long, buttoned white dress with a Victorian top, including a frilled collar and puffy white sleeves, along with black boots. When outdoors, she also dons a long, black coat with a hood, which has a gray inside layer. For Fern's sixteenth birthday, Frieren gifted her a butterfly hair ornament, which Fern regularly wears on the back of her head to partially tie her hair back.[7] Fern also frequently wears a mirrored-lotus bracelet on her left wrist, gifted to her by Stark for her eighteenth birthday.[15] As a mage, Fern wields a long, wooden staff wrapped with purple ribbons in battle, which was a gift to her from Heiter.[16] The staff was shattered in the fight against Frieren's Spiegel clone in the second test of the First-Class Mage Exam.[17] The broken staff led to a quarrel between Frieren and Fern, which was resolved after Frieren brought the staff's remains to Richter, who was able to fully reconstruct it.

Winter Attire

After the events at Graf Granat's Domain, Graf Granat gifts Fern a dark-blue, long-sleeved dress[18] that she wears with a thick, cropped, light-gray winter jacket and braided, blue scarf in colder settings. This replaced her former winter attire, which consisted solely of a brown shawl over her normal clothes.[4][19]

Other Attire

When she was a child, Fern had short, purple hair cut into a straight bob with bangs, decorated with a large, red ribbon on the side of her head. She wore very similar clothing to her present-day outfit, consisting of a smaller version of the buttoned white dress and black cloak, with black Mary Jane shoes. Prior to being adopted by Heiter, she wore a light-colored shoulder cape and possessed a locket with a photo of her family.[10][20]

In Heiß, Fern picks a light-purple dress to wear on a date with Stark. The dress goes down to her shins and has a floral pattern with large, elbow-length sleeves. It is decorated with a collar, tied with a small ribbon that reveals a small cutout. Fern wears this dress with white flats and a small, white purse. Fern chooses the floral dress for the date over a black dress with lace accents.[21]
