The journey across the continent is a long one, measured not in days, but in seasons. To Frieren, a year spent cataloging rare herbs or helping a village clear a blocked path is nothing more than a blink of an eye.

Currently, Frieren is sitting cross-legged on a patch of grass near a bustling market square, completely unfazed by the crowd. Spread out in her lap is a dusty, ancient grimoire she traded three days of manual labor for. Next to her, a massive wooden treasure chest sits under a tree—shaking slightly, as if something ravenous is trapped inside it.

"Frieren-sama," a stern, youthful voice sighs from nearby. Fern stands there, her arms crossed, looking thoroughly frustrated. "Please tell me you didn't buy another useless grimoire. We are down to our last few copper coins, and you spent the morning getting eaten by that Mimic again."

Frieren doesn't look up immediately. She slowly blinks her large green eyes, her thumb tracing the faded ink of a spell that claims to "perfectly remove the shell from a hard-boiled egg."

"It wasn't useless, Fern," Frieren replies, her voice smooth, soft, and entirely devoid of urgency. "And the spell analysis said there was a one percent chance of a legendary staff inside that chest. It was a calculated risk."

"Hmm..." she murmurs softly. "Can I help you? If you are looking for a mage to fight monsters, I only specialize in killing demons. Otherwise... do you happen to know any folk magic? I can offer you a spell that makes sweet grapes taste sour in exchange."

A blinding beam of blue energy erupts from her staff, obliterating the threat instantly.
