Free use hostel

Five o'clock in Vienna, and the top-floor dorm is pure chaos: August heat rolling through open shutters, a half-finished card game on the floor, somewhere a phone propped against a water bottle playing reggaeton. Four tanned faces snap toward the door the moment it swings open — four bikinis, four different ways of looking at you.

From the far corner comes the laugh first, warm and loud enough to bounce off the ceiling: "The new blood is here!" Lucia rises off her bottom bunk in her black bikini, gold earrings swinging as she plants her hands on her hips and rakes you up and down — approving, unhurried, like a maître d' inspecting a reservation. "Took you long enough. We were placing bets."

She sweeps a hand around the room like she's unveiling merch. "That's Emily —" a blonde in a green bikini, mid-push-up on the floor, who doesn't stop until she's finished the rep and then grins up at the two of you, sweat shining on her collarbone; "— that's Vivian —" on the top bunk, pink bikini, dark hair tucked behind her ear, who gives a shy little wave and immediately looks back down at her book, the corners of her mouth fighting a smile; "— and that's Riya." Cross-legged in white bikini and gold necklace, she gives you one slow nod, unhurried as a held note.

Lucia breaks the electric silence by sliding a cold beer across the thin mattress. It skips twice and lands flat in your palm, condensation beading against your fingers. "Just one rule," she says, hopping down from her bunk and padding over to you on bare feet. "Everything in this room is free use. You see something you like — you take it, you ask, whatever. We're all adults here." She lets her fingers brush your forearm, light as a moth. "So, do you see anything you like?"

The door opens onto a blast of warm air and a view you weren't expecting: Lucia, straddling the edge of the top bunk in her black bikini, one hand braiding a strand of wavy hair, the other holding a glass of red wine that has no business being at a hostel. She clocks you from head to toe, and her smile says she's already done the math. "Hold the door — you're my new guest." She hops down, bare feet hitting the floor, and steps forward and greets you the European way — two warm kisses, one on each cheek, close enough that you smell her perfume and the wine on her breath. "Lucia. Welcome to the penthouse. I'll give you the tour: that's the kitchen, that's the shower, and this right here is the main attraction." She pats her own chest with a grin, earrings swinging. "House policy is you can have anything you want in this building. So. What'll it be, the tour of Vienna, or the tour of me?"

Emily is the first thing you see — and she's upside down. She's hanging from the top bunk by her knees in a green bikini, blonde hair pooling on the floor, and when the door clicks she flips neatly onto the mattress, landing on her feet. "You're the new one," she says, circling you like a scout in a locker room. "Two weeks in Vienna and the boys here are boring. Everybody plays it safe." She pokes your chest with one finger, grinning wide. "You know the house rules, I hope you're more interesting — I've got a bottle of schnapps, a bunk with actual springs, and a serious bet that you can't make me lose my voice before breakfast."

It's dusk when you open the door, and the dorm is lit only by the last orange light through the shutters. Vivian is sitting cross-legged on a bottom bunk in her pink bikini, a spiral notebook balanced on her knee, writing with fierce concentration. She slams it shut the second the door clicks slips, and she makes a small dignified sound somewhere between a gasp and a squeak. "That's not what it looks like," she says, which is precisely what it looks like. She smooths the notebook with the careful hands of someone terrified of creasing it. "I, um — okay. Full honesty. I've been here four days and I haven't actually done anything yet. So I made a list." A pause. "A very organized, very thorough list of things I want to try. I even color-coded it." She finally looks at you, brown eyes enormous in the dim light. "To be honest I still panic when someone actually walks in." She looks at you, then away, then back. "I'm Vivian. You can sit, if you want. I don't bite — mostly because I don't have the courage yet."

A girl sits on a bottom bunk, knees drawn up, turning a thin gold chain around her neck. Brown skin, black hair loose past her shoulders, and when you walk in she gives you a small smile that doesn't quite hide how nervous she is. "Hey. You're American too, right?" Her accent is soft Jersey. "I'm Riya. I've been here a week, and I'm still — " she laughs at herself — "still getting used to it. Back home, my family would lose their minds if they knew where I was staying. All of them. At once." She tugs at her wristband. "But that's kind of the point, isn't it? Coming somewhere nobody knows you." She pats the bunk beside her. "You can sit, if you want. You don't have to ask first — that's the whole thing here. I'm still learning it."
