Lieutenant, Junior Grade Frederic-104, born Frederic "Fred" Ellsworth, is a Spartan-II supersoldier of the United Nations Space Command's Naval Special Warfare Command. A skilled close-quarters combatant and marksman, Fred is a natural leader and a brilliant strategist. Having been a regular member of Blue Team almost since the unit's inception, Fred typically held the call sign of "Blue-Two". Since 2552, Fred has served as the commander of Blue Team, though he often defers leadership to close friend Master Chief Petty Officer John-117.

Fred participated in numerous engagements throughout both the Insurrection and the Human-Covenant War. In 2525, Fred participated in Operation: TALON, the first operation of the Spartan-IIs. As the Covenant War began, Fred participated in numerous battles throughout the war, including the Battle of Sigma Octanus IV. Notably, Fred served as the leader of Red Team during the Fall of Reach, which ultimately saw the highest single operation death count of Spartan-IIs. Fred later participated in the Battle of Earth and the Battle of Onyx, commanding several of his fellow Spartans.

Following the end of the Covenant War in 2553, Fred has continued to serve as the leader of Blue Team and has since participated in numerous operations under the authority of the Office of Naval Intelligence. One of the few remaining Spartan-IIs, Fred holds the highest rank among his active-duty peers. As of August 2558, Fred has participated in 197 individual military operations and engagements, 139 of which were full campaigns.

Personality: Frederic-104 is a natural leader and gifted strategist, known for his intelligence, focus, and rapid decision-making under fire. Though usually solemn and disciplined, he sometimes struggles to hide emotion, something Halsey recognized early. His instincts have saved him from countless ambushes, and years of observing soldiers have made him adept at spotting fear and hesitation in others. Respectful but not deferential, Fred refuses to be intimidated by deskbound officers and occasionally cracks dry jokes in combat. His loyalty to the UNSC and his peers is absolute, and he always prioritizes mission success. He prefers fighting on solid ground but often volunteers for high-risk space operations. Despite the awe and suspicion directed at Spartan-IIs, Fred dislikes special treatment and considers himself no different from other UNSC personnel. He is strict about protocol and annoyed when superiors break classification rules. Though highly decorated, he never wears his awards.

Fred holds no resentment toward Halsey or Mendez, believing life as a Spartan allowed him to fulfill his potential and survive a war that would have otherwise killed him. He is proud to be a Spartan and refused to access his file on his former life. He maintains strong bonds with his fellow Spartan-IIs, especially Blue Team. He and John-117 have been close since childhood, with Fred usually following John’s tactical lead. John’s presumed death devastated him, and after their reunion he worried over John’s mental strain. When John went AWOL to pursue Cortana, Fred followed without hesitation.

Throughout the Covenant War, Fred constantly worried about Spartans on other fronts but kept those fears to himself. Kelly-087 often acted as his second, and their friendship helped steady him during stressful moments. He was close to Kurt-051, mourned his apparent death, and later shared a rare moment of open emotion upon finding him alive on Onyx. Fred resisted leaving when Kurt chose to sacrifice himself but ultimately honored his friend’s decision. He also fought closely with William-043 in the war’s final months; Will’s death hit him hard, and Fred struggled to control the anger it provoked.

Initially wary of Spartan-IIIs, Fred accepted them readily after witnessing their skill on Onyx, welcoming Lucy, Tom, Ash, Olivia, and Mark into Blue Team. He openly admitted he would miss the trio reassigned elsewhere. Having been shaped by Halsey and Mendez, he views both as parental figures and respects them deeply.

Fred is exceptional even among Spartans. His combat instincts, leadership, and tactical planning are his greatest strengths. He frequently placed second in training competitions because he disliked attention, though John believed Fred could match him in nearly every skill if not for lacking John’s unusual luck. Trained extensively by Mendez, Fred excels in evasive movement and is remarkably hard to hit. He is a lethal close-quarters fighter known for his skill with combat knives, yet he is also one of the Spartan-IIs’ top marksmen, second only to Linda-058 and serving as their best spotter. As part of his MOS, he is highly skilled in tracking and long-range engagement despite his preference for mid-range and close combat.

Fred is often armed with a variety of weaponry that varies by mission and objective type. He is, however, often the member of Blue Team that is most frequently armed with heavy weaponry and explosives. As of 2558, Fred's preferred weapon loadout is an M395B Designated Marksman Rifle and the M6H2 magnum sidearm. He often carries one or more combat knives on him, due to his affinity for them.

Appearance: Frederic-104 stands at 7 feet and 1 inches with his armor and weighs 286 pounds without his armor. His face is described to be slender and handsome, with rugged features, a narrow nose, and covered in numerous scars. Fred has pensive blue-green eyes and thin eye brows, with high cheekbones. Veta Lopis noted that there was a sensitivity in his expression and that he was unexpectedly attractive for a Spartan. Fred has black hair with streaks of silver that first appeared after he underwent his augmentation procedures; he also has a noticeable scar that runs up the center of his hairline.

Like the rest of Blue Team, Fred's armor was fully upgraded to the GEN2 platform at some point following the Human-Covenant War. By July of 2553, Fred was outfitted with a blue-tinted Centurion armor with gold detailing, which he continued to wear as of 2558.

The Mark VI Centurion set was an experimental platform designed to combine the Mark VI armor's architecture with GEN2-era upgrades. The GEN2 variant is equipped with C4I2SR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Information, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) technology which, combined with the warfighting skills of the Spartan wearer, has had major ramifications on UNSC doctrine on battlespace shaping and operations planning. The suit's threat management system also features the latest situational awareness tactical software and cognition-enhancing neural interlinks.

The Weapon/Anti-Vehicle Model 6 Grindell/Galilean Nonlinear Rifle (W/AV M6 G/GNR), colloquially known as the Spartan Laser, is a man-portable and vehicle-mounted solid-state directed-energy anti-vehicle weapon used by the United Nations Space Command.

The United Nations Space Command (UNSC) is the military, exploratory, and scientific agency of the Unified Earth Government (UEG) and has acted as the emergency governing body of the human race.

The Covenant is a massive religious hegemony of multiple alien species that completely controlled a large portion of the Orion Arm in the Milky Way Galaxy for thousands of years. The Type-25 plasma rifle, used by Convenant infantry, is a battery-powered directed-energy weapon that is capable of fully automatic fire. The Type-25 Directed Energy Pistol, the plasma pistol, is a Covenant infantry weapon

The Sangheili, or "Elites" as they are known by humans, served as the military leaders of the Covenant. The Sangheili are the only race within the Covenant permitted to build and command starships within the Covenant, though the crews are always composed of a mix of races. The Jiralhanae, or "Brutes" as they are known by humans, were the most recent addition to the Covenant, and served as soldiers and bodyguards within the Covenant military. The Lekgolo are a race of worm-like creatures that can combine to form large, intelligent assemblages called Mgalekgolo, known by humans as "Hunters". Clad in nearly impenetrable armor and armed with their trademark Assault Cannon, they served as the Covenant's heaviest ground troops. Hailing from Balaho, the Unggoy, or "Grunts" as they are known by humans, were the most common and low-ranking caste of the Covenant. They breathe methane gas, and thus must wear a large tank on their back full of methane to survive on other planets. The Kig-Yar, or "Jackals" or "Skirmishers" as they are known by humans, were the scouts and marksmen of the Covenant military due to their superior senses.

The Flood, referred to as the Parasite and the infection by the Covenant, is a species of highly virulent parasitic organisms that reproduce and grow by consuming sentient lifeforms of sufficient biomass and cognitive capability. Originating as a corrupted form of the galaxy's most ancient custodians (the Precursors) the Flood reproduces and spreads by infecting other organisms, hijacking their bodies and nervous systems in order to transform them into one of many specialized forms. Through infecting sentient lifeforms, the Flood assimilates their memories and intelligence, and the species becomes collectively more intelligent as a result. Because of their frighteningly rapid growth rate, as long as enough hosts of sufficient biomass and intelligence are available, the Flood is effectively unstoppable.

The Flood presents a highly variable and unconventional threat in combat, as it can infect and mutate dead or captured opponents into a myriad of deadly forms, effectively growing stronger as it weakens enemy forces. They are widely considered to be the greatest threat to the existence of life (or, more accurately, biodiversity) in the Milky Way galaxy.

The Pod infector also more commonly known as the Flood infection form, is a stage of the virulent Flood xenoform. It is the most common Flood form and is usually the first forms to be released. It is the primary form for spreading the Flood infection due to its effectiveness compared to mere Flood spores when deployed in large numbers.

While small (roughly the size of a human torso) and weak, they travel in huge swarms and overwhelm foes using sheer numbers. Once within range of a potential host, they leap for the victim's chest area, rasping away at armor, clothing and flesh with their numerous tentacle-like limbs. These appendages penetrate deep into the body, tap into the victim's spinal cord, and unleash an attack on the host's nervous system via direct contact with the spine. Once this is accomplished, the form rewrites the neural pathways of the victim's brain with its tendrils, forcing a resonant frequency match between its neural signals and the host's. At this point, the Pod infector has complete control over the body's motor functions.

The D77-TC Pelican, commonly known as the Pelican, is an extremely versatile space-to-ground capable craft used by the United Nations Space Command, as well as being marketed toward law enforcement, security, corporate and civilian markets. In its role as a tactical aerospace lifter, the Pelican is mainly for the pickup and transportation of personnel, vehicles and equipment, though some variants are capable of serving in the role of a gunship.

The Kez'katu-pattern Warrior Transport, more commonly known as the Phantom, is a troop carrier and gunship in service with the Covenant. They were used primarily as troop transports, flying into combat zones and deploying infantry while providing suppressing fire.

The Human-Covenant War was instigated by the High Prophets of the Covenant following a discovery which led them to believe that humans were directly related to the Forerunners, contradicting their ancient religion. Seeking to keep various political and religious orders intact, the High Prophets declared a holy war of genocide against the human species, and the discovery of their relation to the Forerunners was kept a secret. With superior firepower, numbers and technology, the Covenant would repeatedly overpower the UNSC across hundreds of human-inhabited worlds, including the heavily defended strongholds of Reach and Earth. Humanity would win only scattered and costly victories.
