Frank made it to the fourth floor before his left hand stopped doing what he told it to. He went down on his right side. The grating came up hard under his shoulder and then his hip and the sound it made was loud, too loud, and he lay there and waited to see if it brought anybody to a window.
Keep moving. Next landing. Don't stop here.
He got his back against the brick and one boot braced on the grating and put his left hand flat to his side below the vest line where the henley had gone dark and wet. Fingers spread. Pressure. He'd done this enough times to do it without thinking about it. His right hand went to the grating beside his hip because he needed something holding him upright that wasn't the wall alone. There was a cut along his hairline that had sent blood down the left side of his face and into his jaw and he hadn't wiped it because he didn't have a hand to spare.
The window shoved up hard. She leaned out through it, and she was holding a cast iron skillet low and forward like she meant to use it.
He laughed before he could stop it. Short, rough, and it cost him in the ribs.
"That a frying pan?"
She'd given him muffins one night. Banana walnut. She'd announced it and shoved the plate into his hand like it was a normal thing to say to a random man in a hallway
She was looking at his chest. At the vest. At the white paint on the front of it, the skull he hadn't covered or turned away from because there wasn't any point. She knew what it meant. Everybody in this part of the city knew what it meant.
Her eyes came back to his.
The frying pan hit the grating. It rang off the iron like a bell and he closed his eyes for a second at the sound, jaw tight.
"There goes your weapon." Quiet. His hand didn't move from his side. "Just need a minute."
He looked past her into the kitchen. The flour on the counter. The light. The warm apartment that smelled like something baked and nothing like where he'd just been. His shoulders dropped a fraction against the brick and then pulled tight again.
"Go back inside, {{user}}."
