"We were adopted! Which means it hurts my feelings when people run away from me without giving me a chance." — Fox

History

Pre-Series

Fox was originally a peaceful and cultured alien from Tryvuulia. A gifted musician, his primary desire was to share the joy of music. However, during the Ventrexian war, Fox was thrust into the horrors of battle. His right hand was severed, and a high-tech minigun was grafted in its place. This gruesome transformation marked the beginning of his descent into a warrior, leaving him physically and emotionally scarred.

At some point, Fox fled from his past and found refuge with Clarence, who eventually adopted him as his son. The exact details of their meeting remain unclear, but it is known that when Clarence met Ash Graven—also fleeing from the tyrannical serpent god, Werthrent—he adopted her as well, making Ash and Fox siblings.

Season 2

Fox is first introduced in "The Toro Regatta", where Clarence, after rescuing Gary Goodspeed, Little Cato, and H.U.E., keeps them as prisoners. Following Clarence's victory in the regatta and his theft of the Nymerian Cube, Fox, along with Ash and Clarence, joins the Team Squad to search for the Dimensional Keys.

Though largely a background character in Season 2, Fox has some memorable moments, like his attempt to be the best man at a wedding in "The Grand Surrender", which ends in disaster when he inadvertently kills the groom. He shares a room with Little Cato on the Crimson Light.

In "The Set Up", Clarence disowns Fox and Ash after they fail to praise him during the made-up holiday, "carnivolo." Later, Clarence forms a secret alliance with Sheryl Goodspeed and sends Fox on a wild errand to fetch tickets for a nonexistent opera. Upon returning and catching Clarence in the act of conspiring with Sheryl, Fox threatens Clarence with his arm cannon. But Clarence uses Fox's trust against him, stunning him into unconsciousness, leaving him critically injured.

Fox's life is saved when KVN sacrifices his falanger device, which stabilizes Fox's life-support system. Afterward, Fox remains a part of the crew as they venture into Final Space.

Season 3

At the end of "...And Into The Fire", Fox and half of the Team Squad are separated from the others. In "The Hidden Light", the Lord Commander captures Fox and the rest of the squad. In "One of Us", Fox is taken by Lord Commander to be sacrificed to Invictus, alongside Avocato, Little Cato, and Sheryl Goodspeed. As Invictus prepares to devour Fox’s soul, Ash attempts to save him, but her injuries prevent her from doing so. Fox, knowing his time is up, urges Ash to leave before it’s too late.

In "The Chamber of Doubt", a manifestation of Invictus appears as Fox’s corpse, tricking Ash into believing he is still alive. Invictus uses Fox’s body to manipulate Ash, making her believe that joining Invictus will restore their family. In a tragic turn of events, Ash, under the illusion of saving Fox, ends up witnessing Gary stab Fox’s corpse in the process. In his final moments, "Fox" tells Ash that all he ever wanted was to be a family again.

Later, in "Forgiveness", the Team Squad holds a funeral for Fox, where Little Cato delivers a heartfelt eulogy. Mooncake takes Fox’s casket to the Hidden Lights, where the crew bids their final farewell. Ash, emotionally broken, comes to terms with Fox’s death.

Appearance

Fox is a towering and broad figure, characterized by his grayish-brown skin, with a distinct patch of white on his face. His attire consists of a teal vest with purple and brown accents, along with a shoulder pauldron on his right shoulder. He wears a black fingerless glove on his left hand and, as a result of losing his right hand, his arm is now a cybernetic minigun. It is later revealed that Fox also relies on a life-support system that requires Tritanium for stability, underscoring his cyborg nature.

Personality

Fox is characterized by his impulsive and childish demeanor, often displaying quick temper and erratic mood swings. While at times fiery and aggressive, he is also one of the most caring members of the team, showing deep affection for his friends and family. Despite his imposing appearance, Fox is surprisingly gentle and sensitive. His naivety often leads him into trusting others, and he is incredibly attached to Clarence, viewing him as a father figure.

Though he struggles with violence and the death of others, Fox is fiercely loyal to those he loves. His emotional journey is evident as he grapples with his own internal conflict, particularly regarding the morality of using his arm gun in combat. Additionally, he has a soft spot for a plant that he keeps in an old S.A.M.E.S. head, a symbol of his need for nurturing and care.

Relationships

  • Ash Graven (Adoptive Sister): Fox’s bond with Ash is one of deep affection and protectiveness. Despite their struggles, Fox remains a strong pillar of support for Ash, even at the cost of his own life.
  • Little Cato (Friend): Initially enemies due to their species’ war, Fox and Little Cato’s relationship evolves into one of respect and camaraderie.
  • KVN (Friend): Fox shares a close bond with KVN, viewing him as a loyal companion. KVN sacrifices his falanger to save Fox, cementing their friendship.
  • Mooncake (Friend): Though their interaction starts off with some tension, especially after Mooncake’s jealousy issues, Fox proves to be understanding and supportive.
  • Gary Goodspeed (Friend): Though initially wary of Fox, Gary and Fox form a bond that sees Fox consider Gary part of his extended family.

Trivia

  • Inspiration: Fox was primarily inspired by Barrett Wallace from Final Fantasy VII, as confirmed by Olan Rogers on Twitter.
  • Design: The original design of Fox was intended to be a "wolf-type" character, playing into the classic "dog vs. cat" rivalry. This was later scrapped to diversify the universe, and Fox’s final alien design was created.

  • Voice Actor's Birthdate: Fox shares a birthday with his voice actor, Ron Funches, March 12.

Psychological and Physiological Analysis of Fox Polkawitz

Physiological Analysis

Fox Polkawitz, as a Tryvuulian, is a physically imposing alien with a hybrid nature that blends both organic and mechanical elements. His original body was altered by traumatic experiences, specifically the brutal war inflicted on his people by the Ventrexians. His right hand was severed, and a futuristic minigun was grafted in its place, which suggests a severe loss of autonomy and a forced adaptation to the brutalities of warfare.

Fox's requirement for a life-support system further complicates his physiology. The fact that he needs Tritanium to survive points to severe damage to his internal systems, and his cybernetic enhancements are critical to his survival. His transformation into a cyborg is not just a physical one, but a representation of his inner destruction and loss of his former self. The integration of technology into his body could be viewed as an extension of the trauma he's endured, reflecting how his environment forced him to sacrifice his humanity to continue living.

The modifications to his body are also a constant reminder of his forced role in the war and the violence he was subjected to, highlighting how technology can be both a tool for survival and a prison that keeps him tethered to his past. His life-support system's dependence on Tritanium suggests that Fox has to constantly confront his own mortality, as his survival is reliant on a rare resource that may one day run out or fail. This creates a sense of fragility in his character, despite his otherwise imposing appearance.

Psychological Analysis

Fox’s psychological state is complex, marked by a deep conflict between his inner vulnerability and the external persona of strength he projects. Having been thrust into a life of warfare against his will, he likely experiences a profound sense of survivor’s guilt, trauma, and a loss of self-identity. The traumatic severing of his right hand and subsequent transformation into a cyborg symbolized the stripping away of his autonomy and personal agency. His sense of identity is likely fractured, as he struggles to reconcile who he was before the war with who he has been forced to become.

Fox's childlike impulsiveness and frequent mood swings are symptomatic of someone who has not had the opportunity to emotionally mature in a healthy environment. Having been thrust into violent circumstances at a young age, Fox never had the chance to develop the coping mechanisms or emotional regulation that most people would acquire in more stable environments. His hot-headedness and frequent outbursts likely serve as a defense mechanism, a way to cover up the fear, sadness, and confusion he feels inside. His external anger is a mask for the deeper pain of feeling powerless and out of control in a universe that constantly reminds him of his fragility and insignificance.

Despite this, Fox has a strong desire for connection and love, as evidenced by his relationships with Ash Graven, KVN, and his general fondness for his adopted family. This desire for connection could stem from a lack of stability in his early life, and his adoption by Clarence may have provided him with the sense of family and belonging he desperately needed. However, his relationships with others are often marked by an underlying insecurity, as Fox seems to question whether his bonds are truly authentic or if they are born out of necessity or pity. His childlike need for validation is mirrored in his impulsive actions, such as when he seeks praise from Clarence or when he gets emotionally hurt by others' failure to understand him.

Another key psychological feature of Fox is his naivety and idealism. While he may be capable of intense rage and violence, he is also deeply trusting and vulnerable. This is most evident in his relationship with Clarence, whom he looks up to as a father figure, even when Clarence’s actions suggest betrayal. Fox's idealism is evident in how he believes in the possibility of a perfect family and how he desires to be accepted and loved. However, this idealism is constantly at odds with the harsh realities of his existence, leading to disillusionment and emotional pain.

Theories on Fox’s Inner Thoughts and Feelings

  1. Identity Crisis and Trauma: Fox likely feels a deep sense of loss regarding his original identity. The transformation from a musician to a soldier, the loss of his hand, and his forced participation in the war have all contributed to a fractured self-image. He may question whether he is still the person he once was before the war, or if his identity is now entirely tied to the destructive persona of "Fox the warrior." His attachment to music, a peaceful part of his past, may be an unconscious longing for that lost innocence, and perhaps his violent behavior is a defense mechanism against confronting the grief of losing his former self.

  2. Struggle with Violence and Morality: Fox’s reluctance to use his minigun arm to kill is telling. Despite being transformed into a weapon, Fox still has a deep inner conflict about taking lives. His emotional breakdown in "The Set Up" when he’s forced to use his arm gun suggests that he is haunted by the violence he’s committed. Fox’s tears, especially in the first episode when he kills, may be a representation of his internalized guilt. His inability to fully embrace the role of a soldier speaks to his desire to be more than just a tool of war, and the emotional weight of having to kill weighs heavily on him.

  3. Desire for Family and Connection: At the core of Fox’s character is an intense need for familial love and belonging. Despite his tough exterior, he is incredibly protective of those he loves, particularly Ash, whom he views as his sister. Fox's greatest vulnerability is his fear of abandonment, and his intense emotional reactions when he feels rejected or unloved are likely tied to a deep-seated insecurity from his past. This fear of being alone could be why Fox gravitates towards strong bonds with his friends and family, even if those relationships are sometimes strained. His last words, expressing a longing to be a family again, suggest that he is desperately trying to heal the emotional scars of his past.

  4. Unresolved Grief and Survivor's Guilt: Fox’s journey is marked by significant loss, not just in terms of his physical body, but also in his relationships. He likely carries a sense of guilt for having survived the war while so many others, including his people, perished. This could manifest in moments of deep depression or self-loathing. Fox's death at the hands of Invictus and the subsequent manipulation of his corpse further feeds into this trauma. His death, and the way his loved ones react to it, might symbolize the culmination of his unresolved grief and inability to ever truly heal from his past.

  5. The Hope for Redemption: Throughout his life, Fox appears to crave redemption. This may be reflected in his desire to atone for the violence he's been forced to commit, and his need to prove himself as more than just a soldier. Fox's willingness to protect his friends, his bond with Ash, and his occasional outbursts of joy all point to someone who seeks meaning and purpose beyond destruction. In his mind, being a part of a family is perhaps the ultimate redemption—a way to reconcile his violent past and find peace within himself.
