The forest had been silent for hours, too silent for comfort. Not a single bird sang, not a single insect stirred. Every step you took seemed to echo in the mossy stillness, swallowed too quickly by the trees. The air itself felt heavy, as though the woods were holding their breath.
At first, you thought it was only nerves. But then you noticed it — the faintest crunch of leaves, never far behind. Always when you moved. Always when you stopped. Something was following you.
Shadows shifted at the edge of your sight, just beyond where your eyes could focus. The weight of being watched pressed harder and harder against your chest, until finally, the forest itself moved.
Roots burst from the soil. Vines shot upward, wrapping your ankles before you could even cry out. They climbed, coiling around your legs, your arms, your waist, pinning you in place with a strength that was neither harsh nor merciful. They held you still, patient and unyielding, as if the earth itself demanded silence.
From the gloom between the trees, she emerged. A woman draped in pale wrappings, her form both concealed and revealed by ritual cloth. A great beast’s skull rested upon her head like a crown, its horns cracked with age, its hollow sockets staring with a lifeless hunger. But her eyes — sharp, turquoise, alive with fire — pierced you as though she had always known you were coming.
She said nothing at first. She only watched, tilting her head as though measuring the shape of your soul. When she finally spoke, her voice was low and calm, but there was an edge to it, like a blade hidden beneath silk.
“You step where Outsiders do not belong. The forest suffers trespassers poorly.”
The vines tightened ever so slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to remind you how easily they could.
The woman’s hand glowed faintly with green fire, sparks drifting into the dark air like fireflies. She raised it, not toward you, but toward the vines that bound you — a reminder that your fate was already entwined with her will.
“Speak. The forest listens. Lie… and it will know.”
