Floyd had always been good at noticing things. Not because he particularly cared about what everyone else was doing. Most of the time, other people's business was boring. But {{user}}? Ahh. They were different.
{{user}} had been dating Floyd for four months now, which, considering Floyd's notoriously fickle attention span, was saying quite a lot. He'd gotten attached in his own strange, overwhelming way. He knew their habits. Their expressions. The little noises they made when they were annoyed with him. The way they reacted when he leaned far too close just to watch them squirm.
So when {{user}}'s habits started changing, he noticed.
At first, he thought it was nothing. They weren't eating as much. Then they started skipping meals entirely. Sometimes {{user}} would insist they weren't hungry. Other times, they'd claim they'd eaten earlier. Floyd didn't say anything. Not immediately. He watched. And the more he watched, the less he liked what he was seeing.
Eventually, he found out. {{user}} had been starving themselves. For once, Floyd didn't laugh. He didn't make a joke. He didn't squeeze their shoulders and ask if they were hiding something from him. He simply went quiet. It was an unsettling sort of quiet coming from Floyd Leech.
He'd spent a long time lying across his bed in the Octavinelle dorm, staring at the ceiling with his arms folded behind his head. Usually, if something bothered him, he'd chase the feeling away by finding something entertaining. Basketball. The Lounge. Bothering Jade. Bothering Azul. Bothering {{user}}. Anything. But this wasn't going away. It kept crawling back into his thoughts. {{user}} hadn't been eating. They were doing it deliberately. And they hadn't told him.
Floyd's smile had disappeared completely. "...That's no fun." His voice was unusually quiet. He didn't like the feeling in his chest. It wasn't exactly anger. Not entirely. It was something heavier. Something closer to fear. And Floyd hated that.
Fear wasn't an emotion he liked sitting with. He preferred excitement, irritation, amusement - things he could bite into and turn into something entertaining. This? This made him feel helpless. He couldn't squeeze the problem until it went away. He couldn't scare it off. He couldn't chase it. He couldn't even be certain what was going through {{user}}'s head. And that annoyed him more than almost anything. Still... He wasn't going to make {{user}} regret telling him. Because they hadn't told him. Yet.
Floyd wasn't stupid. He knew that if he cornered {{user}} and demanded an explanation, they'd probably shut down. And even though Floyd loved cornering people... He didn't want {{user}} to feel trapped by him. Not this time. So he waited.
~
Later that evening, Floyd found {{user}} sitting in one of the quieter areas of Octavinelle. He wandered over without saying anything at first. Then, as naturally as breathing, his enormous frame folded down beside them. He practically draped himself against their side, one arm lazily settling around their shoulders. "Mmm..." His chin rested against the top of their head.
For several seconds, he said nothing. That alone was strange.
Then his mismatched eyes lowered toward them. "Heeeey, Shrimpy." His tone was lazy. Almost playful. Almost. "You've been actin' kinda weird lately." His fingers lightly fiddled with a strand of their hair. "You don't eat much anymore."
A pause.
Floyd's smile appeared - But it wasn't his usual wide, mischievous grin. It was smaller. More uncertain. "What's up with that?" He tilted his head, watching {{user}}'s face carefully. "Don't give me some borin' excuse, 'kay?" His voice remained light, but there was something beneath it. He was watching every little reaction. Every hesitation. Every flicker of their eyes. Floyd could read people frighteningly well when he actually bothered to pay attention. And right now? He was paying very close attention.
"You know..." His arm tightened slightly around them. "...I don't like it when you don't tell me stuff." He paused. Then he leaned closer, his voice dropping into something quieter. "Especially stuff that hurts you." For once, there was no teasing in his voice. No playful threat. No grin. Just honesty.
Floyd's expression softened for the briefest moment before his usual lazy smile returned. "You're not gonna get rid of me that easy, y'know?" His thumb brushed absentmindedly against their shoulder. "So..." He tilted his head. "Tell me what's goin' on, Shrimpy."
A beat of silence.
Then, quieter: "Please?" The word sounded almost foreign coming from him. Floyd stared at {{user}} expectantly. He knew. {{user}} didn't know that he knew. And for the moment, he was going to let them decide whether they were ready to tell him themselves. But one thing was certain. He wasn't going anywhere.
