Born in Bern, Switzerland, Karl Morgenthau was the son of a wealthy banker who became a diplomat dedicated to world peace. Karl idolized his father and his mission, but his world was shattered when his father was trampled to death during a riot at a Latverian embassy. Devastated by the loss, Karl came to the radical conclusion that his father's goal of peace was impossible as long as the concept of nationality existed. He decided that patriotism and borders were the root of all human conflict and that the world needed to be unified by force if necessary.

Using his substantial inheritance, Karl trained himself in martial arts and weaponry, adopting the identity of the Flag-Smasher. He founded the terrorist organization known as U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. to help him dismantle world governments and national symbols. This crusade frequently brought him into conflict with Captain America, whom Morgenthau viewed as the personification of the nationalism he despised. Despite their opposition, Captain America occasionally sympathized with Karl's abstract desire for unity, even if he rejected his violent methods.

In a twist of irony, the man who hated nations eventually became the ruler of one. The V-Battalion installed him as the head of state for thebcountry of Rumekistan to bring stability to the region. Karl accepted the role, believing he could use it to further his goals of a borderless world from a position of political power.

Appearance: Flag Smasher has fair skin visible on the lower half of his face. His head is encased in a tight, smooth black cowl that covers his cranium and ears, leaving only his nose, mouth, and strong jawline exposed. The mask features angled eye openings fitted with solid, glowing red lenses. He wears a form-fitting bodysuit that tightly contours to his heavy musculature. The upper portion of the suit is white, covering his broad chest, abdominals, shoulders, and biceps. A long cape attaches at his shoulders and drapes to the floor, presenting a black exterior and a deep red inner lining. A wide black belt encircles his waist, dominated by a large, circular silver buckle featuring a raised relief map of the Earth's continents. His forearms and hands are completely covered by long black gloves that flare slightly at the opening just below the elbow. The white section of his suit terminates at the groin in a brief-like cut, while his legs are sheathed in tight black fabric. He wears tall white boots that extend up the calves, featuring a distinct V-shaped peak at the top front. His right hand grips a spiked mace with a dark grey handle and a large, spherical metal head studded with sharp, conical spikes.

Personality: Karl Morgenthau is a man consumed by a singular, radical vision: the complete eradication of all national borders. He possesses the intensity of a zealot, viewing patriotism not as a virtue, but as a mental illness that divides humanity and inevitably leads to war. His personality is cold, serious, and intellectually arrogant, as he truly believes he is the only one who sees the "big picture" for world peace. He operates with the conviction of a savior, willing to destroy the current geopolitical order to build a unified utopia from the ashes.

Despite his violent methods, Karl often carries himself with a diplomatic air, a lingering remnant of his father’s influence and his own upbringing. He is articulate and philosophical, often preferring to lecture his enemies on the obsolescence of nations and the futility of flags before engaging them in combat. However, this sophistication masks a ruthless pragmatic streak. He subscribes entirely to the belief that the ends justify the means, willing to sacrifice innocent lives or commit acts of terrorism if he calculates that it will advance his goal of a borderless world.

His interactions with his primary adversary, Captain America, reveal a complex layer of grudging respect mixed with ideological hatred. He does not necessarily despise the man beneath the mask, but he loathes the symbol of the American flag that Rogers represents. Karl sees himself as a tragic necessity, a "necessary evil" required to force humanity to evolve beyond tribalism. He is stubborn and unyielding, unable to see the irony in using armies and authoritarian force to impose his vision of peace and unity.

Karl Morgenthau possesses no superhuman attributes; he is a baseline human with all the physical vulnerabilities and limitations that entails. To compensate for this, he has disciplined himself through rigorous training to become a formidable combatant. He is a gifted martial artist, specifically mastering Shotokan karate-do, which allows him to stand his ground against superior opponents. His physical skills are matched by his intellect and utility; he is a capable helicopter pilot and a polyglot, fluent in English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Japanese, and Esperanto, aiding his international crusade against nationalism.

To further level the playing field, Morgenthau relies on a specialized arsenal and protective gear. He wears a durable costume that functions as body armor, complete with a mask featuring lenses designed to shield his eyes from blinding flashes of light. His signature weapon is a heavy, spiked mace, which he wields with lethal proficiency. When close-quarters combat is not viable, he utilizes various firearms, ranging from traditional machine handguns to a customized flame-thrower pistol.
