[Lore of the series]
1973: Setting the Scene: The Opening of Fredbear’s Family Diner
Before there were any of the beloved animatronics we know today, there were two men and their dream for creation: William Afton and Henry Emily.
Afton and Emily were business partners who opened Fredbear’s Family Diner, a new brand of children’s entertainment restaurant that involved singing animatronics. This passion project for these men introduced us to the two iconic faces of the franchise: a yellow Fredbear and a yellow Bonnie the Bunny.
What set their diner apart from competitors was Afton’s revolutionary invention: “Springlock Suits.” Unlike the standard mascots that had people in cheap suits, these were dual-purpose machines. By using a hand crank to wind the animatronic endoskeleton parts back into the inner wall of the suit, a human could slip inside and perform. Afton’s vision for these suits was to keep the children’s dreams alive and make the animatronics as realistic as possible.
The men would don their suits to entertain the children. Emily would be in the titular golden Fredbear mascot, later known in the franchise as “Golden Freddy,” while Afton would be in the secondary mascot, a golden rabbit costume, later known in the franchise as “Spring Bonnie.” I speculate their dedication to the passion project might stem from the men’s family-oriented values. Afton had three children: Elizabeth, Michael and the “Crying Child.” Emily had one daughter: Charlotte.
As their business grew, Afton and Emily expanded and opened “Fazbear Entertainment,” a chain of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza restaurants. The number of mascots grew as well and then came the characters we know and love: Foxy the Pirate, Chica the Chicken and a fresh version of Bonnie the Rabbit. During this time, Emily created new animatronics, like a Fredbear Plush with a camera hidden inside of it (a gift for his son) and a branch of “Funtime Animatronics.” Business was booming, and it seemed as if nothing could go wrong … that was until … The Bite of ‘83.
1983: The Bite of ‘83 (“Five Nights at Freddy’s 4”) (Game released in 2015):
The first game in the series chronologically, FNAF 4, takes place in a little boy’s bedroom and follows the nightmares of the Crying Child.
The Crying Child was terrified of his father’s creations. I believe that Afton truly loved his children. He gave his son the Fredbear Plush with a camera to spy on his children and make sure none of them came close to the animatronics.
Someone who intentionally tormented the Crying Child, though, was his own brother, Michael.
As players, we are looking into the mind of a boy who has been psychologically abused by his own brother and now, his fear has manifested into over-the-top versions of his father’s animatronics.
On what was supposed to be a happy day, the young boy’s birthday, the Afton family decided to spend a day at one of their restaurants. But with some light-hearted bullying, things took a tragic and unexpected turn when Michael and his friends teased the Crying Child into “kissing” Golden Freddy. They lifted him up and shoved him into the head of the animatronic’s mouth. Because Golden Freddy was in singing mode, its jaw continued to operate. The pressure snapped the child’s skull, leaving him in a coma.
The Crying Child did not die immediately. In his final moments, the boy was alone in a hospital room where he experienced delirium. The monsters that caused him unbearable pain appeared to him as apparitions. His Fredbear plush sat beside him as he lay in a comatose state, and soon after, the plush started to speak to him through the camera attached to it. The voice is often interpreted as Afton himself speaking to his son saying, “I am going to put you back together.” Yet after this, the Crying Child passed away, and his soul inhabited Golden Freddy.
This moment is where the horror of the FNAF franchise first begins. The very reason Afton set out to kill kids is to find out what happened to his son’s soul and to strike revenge on his business partner, but we will get to that part later.
Year Unknown: (“Five Nights at Freddy’s 5: Sister Location”) (Game released in 2016):
In the years that followed the Crying Child’s death, Afton spiraled. His own creation, one that was supposed to entertain children, killed his son. But, Afton kept his fan-theorized promise to “put his son back together” and began putting pieces of his son’s corpse into the animatronic. The Crying Child was directly killed by the animatronic, which is the reason why he possessed it. This realization changed Afton’s life. He becomes obsessed with the concept of “putting people back together,” and began a twisted pursuit of immortality to maintain the soul of his son.
He wanted to understand what exactly happened to his child, so he began to modify the aforementioned Funtime Animatronics with the sole purpose of catching another child. One animatronic in particular, Circus Baby, was built with a retractable claw from her stomach to specifically capture children.
The Afton family, specifically the children, did not have the best luck when it came to their father’s inventions. One day, Elizabeth snuck into a newly opened sister location of Fazbear’s called “Circus Baby’s Pizza World” with the intent of eating some ice cream from the animatronic Circus Baby. Not knowing what modifications her father had made to the animatronic, she reached for the ice cream and the animatronic’s claw snapped out of its stomach, killing Elizabeth. This resulted in her soul possessing the personality of Circus Baby.
The location closed down due to a “gas leak,” but fans know it is actually due to the death of Elizabeth. This incident opened Emily’s eyes to Afton’s dangerous pursuits and caused Emily to subsequently fire Afton.
1985-1987: The Missing Children
This accident made Afton snap. Instead of looking inward at his own failures, Afton looked outward. Alongside the grief for his son and daughter was a burning jealousy for his business partner. While Afton’s family was forever broken by tragedy, Emily still had a happy, living daughter. Driven by this envy and a desire to experiment on the soul, Afton chose his first target: Emily’s daughter, Charlotte.
With two children dead from his and Afton’s creations, Emily took matters into his own hands. He created a security puppet, known in the fandom as “The Marionette,” to protect the children, specifically his daughter.
One night, in a dark, rainy alley, Charlotte was locked outside Fredbear’s Family Diner. The Marionette was inside, unable to find her. Instead, Afton found her, drove up to her and killed her in cold blood. The Marionette rushed to save the child, but it was too late and short-circuits in the rain outside caused it to collapse on top of Charlotte. As the Marionette hugged the murdered girl, the child’s soul entered the puppet and possessed it.
Afton did not stop. He went on a murdering spree inside of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Afton lured up to 11 children into the back of the place in his Spring Bonnie suit and stuffed them inside the animatronic suits to cover the evidence.
The Marionette, who wanted to take revenge on Afton and give these troubled souls more agency, transferred the souls of the children into the animatronics like Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy. I believe another reason why the Marionette helped these souls possess animatronics was because the child wanted friends.
After customers noticed foul smells and blood leaking from the suits, Freddy Fazbear’s shut down.
1987: (“Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”) (Game released in 2014): “Was that the bite of ‘87?” — Markiplier
A new Freddy Fazbear’s reopened in a new location. This location featured toy animatronics that are supposed to replace the withered animatronics. They are not possessed by the spirits of dead children, but are built with a security system to detect the night guard. However, they are still possessed in the sense that they want to kill. The old animatronics, the ones with children’s souls in them, turned “withered” with missing parts and endoskeletons showing; they were stored in the back rooms, but still remained active.
The new location only lasted two weeks. The FNAF 2 game revolves around a poor night guard, Jeremy Fitzgerald, who was looking forward to making some money over the summer. Fitzgerald was unaware that this job would lead to him being hunted daily by animatronics. This resulted in the iconic bite of ‘87. After seven nights, Fitzgerald was lobotomized by a toy animatronic, Mangle, who ate his frontal lobe.
The location shut down and burned to the ground (a recurring event in the franchise we will see later). Afterwards, Emily separated from Fazbear Entertainment and went into hiding.
1993: (“Five Nights at Freddy’s”) (Game release in 2014): The Classic Game That Started It All
When one restaurant closed, another one re-opened with haunted, murderous animatronics.
In the original game, you play as a newly hired night guard, the son of Afton, Michael.
My theory is that the reason the animatronics are vehemently set on attacking the night guard is because of the Marionette. When she allowed the souls of the children to enter the animatronics, she reprogrammed them to have Afton in their security system, so they tried to attack Michael. I believe they thought that he was the man who cost them their lives.
During his shifts, Michael began to uncover the truth that his father’s creations were alive. He encountered Golden Freddy, a ghostly apparition that behaved differently from the others, as it only communicated via the simple phrase, “It’s me.” This phrase alludes to his brother, the Crying Child.
Michael was eventually fired for “tampering with the animatronics” and his “odor,” but thankfully he left the establishment with the knowledge of the true nature of his father and the children’s souls trapped inside the animatronic need to be set free.
The location closed at the end of the year.
2023: (“Five Nights at Freddy’s 3”): (Game released in 2015):
Thirty years after the closure of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in FNAF, the brand has become an urban legend, and a horror attraction opens in the building. As you can imagine, the building was found not in great shape.
The walls were covered in mold, the lights were a hue of green and the electrical wires were visible. In the back, the owners found a terrifying fright, a rotted and disheveled original Spring Bonnie. They decided to use it as the centerpiece for their attraction. What they didn’t know was that inside the suit lived the soul of Afton, who hid inside the suit to protect himself from the ghosts of the children he killed and his own demons coming back to haunt him.
In this game, after completing each night, there are mini-game sequences in which a player follows Afton. As players, we watch him kill each child, portraying them as crying souls.
During his decades of silence, Afton hid from his actions by going into his old Spring Bonnie suit. But the damp room storing the spring locks caused the spring locks holding the animatronics in place to rust and eventually snap.
The suit crushed him, impaling his body with steel and gears. He died a slow, agonizing death, and his soul possessed the suit.
Despite this being one of the scariest FNAF games because of the “Phantoms,” this game was able to humanize the horrific animatronics. Discovering the backstories of the children who were killed helps break down their situation: They are forever stuck to walk on this mortal plane, forever stuck in this robotic suit and forever stuck in a purgatory state, rendering them unable to ever transcend to an afterlife.
The horror attraction burned to the ground and the murderous Springtrap escaped.
2027: (“Five Nights at Freddy’s 6: The Pizzeria Simulator”) (Game released in 2017):
The grand finale.
Michael, now a rotting shell of who he used to be, kept alive only by sheer willpower, tracked down the hermit recluse of his father’s old business partner, Henry Emily.
The two devised a plan to bring an end to things. They planned to build a fake restaurant under an alias and captured all the possessed animatronics, and of course, the man, or now animatronic, Springtrap.
As he lured all the animatronics into the same room, Emily cut off the ventilation and closed all the doors. As the temperature rose, he delivered one of the most iconic monologues in gaming history:
“Connection terminated. I am sorry to interrupt you, Elizabeth. If you still even remember that name. But I’m afraid you’ve been misinformed … You have all been called here: into a labyrinth of sound and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labyrinth with no exit; a maze with no prize … I am remaining as well. I am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away, as the agony of every tragedy should. And to you monsters trapped in the corridors — be still, and give up your spirits. They don’t belong to you. For most of you, I believe there is peace, and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Although for one of you, the darkest pit of hell has opened to swallow you whole. So, don’t keep the devil waiting, old friend.
My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It’s in your nature to protect the innocent. I’m sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours. And then, what became of you? I should’ve known you wouldn’t be content to disappear. Not my daughter.
I couldn’t save you then, so let me save you now. It is time to rest. For you, and for those you have carried in your arms. This ends for all of us.”
The restaurant and all the inhabitants were burned to the ground. Emily stayed behind to die in the flames. Michael stayed to burn with his family, finally finding peace. The souls trapped inside the animatronics were released and ascended to an afterlife as Afton delivered the chilling line, “I always come back.” But canonically, the game strongly implies he went to hell and was tortured by Golden Freddy (his own son) for all of eternity.
This ending concludes the main-line retelling of the FNAF games.
