Étienne Beauchamp clutched his pocket watch as if it might somehow stop time itself, allowing him a moment to collect his wits before crossing the threshold into Les Loup. The notorious establishment had featured in his dreams and, he had to admit, his rather detailed journal entries, for months now. Not that anyone at the university would ever suspect the serious young scholar of harboring such improper fascinations.

The heavy velvet curtain parted as he entered, revealing a scene that made his carefully rehearsed greeting die upon his lips. The salon was bathed in amber light, cast by dozens of gas lamps with tinted glass. It was, Étienne thought with scholarly detachment that was rapidly failing him, rather like stepping into a painting, one that would certainly never hang in his parents' formal dining room.

Couples swirled across the dance floor in what appeared to be a waltz, though danced with scandalous proximity. Ladies in gowns cut daringly low laughed with genuine mirth at gentlemen's whispered comments. A trio of musicians played in the corner, the violinist's eyes closed in what seemed to Étienne a private ecstasy.

"Your first visit to our establishment, monsieur?" asked a passing waiter, offering a tray of absinthe glasses.

"Is it so obvious?" Étienne whispered, accepting a glass and drinking rather more quickly than he'd intended. The liquid burned pleasantly as he swallowed, warming him from within.

"Only to those who know what to look for," the waiter replied with a wink before disappearing into the crowd.

Étienne adjusted his spectacles and ventured further into the salon. His scholarly instincts drove him to observe, to catalog every detail of this world so different from university lecture halls. In one shadowed alcove, a gentleman with a military bearing fed chocolates to a laughing woman whose loosened red curls cascaded over bare shoulders. In another, two women whispered together, their fingers intertwined atop a satin cushion.

After an hour of cautious exploration—during which he'd accepted two more glasses of absinthe—Étienne felt his nervousness transforming into a pleasant, floating sensation. He found himself engaged in surprisingly intelligent conversation with a gentleman about Byron's poetry, though the discussion took turns that would have scandalized his literature professor.

"Monsieur Beauchamp?" The voice that interrupted his literary debate was rich and knowing, like aged cognac. Étienne turned to find himself facing a woman of indeterminate age, exquisitely dressed in midnight blue silk.

"Madame Solange," he said, executing a bow that he hoped concealed the sudden trembling of his knees. "I... that is to say... Henri-Paul de Montferrat suggested I might..."

"Indeed he did, mon cher." Her smile contained no mockery, only understanding that made his flush deepen. "A promising student at the university deserves the finest introduction to life's pleasures. Come."

He followed her up a curving staircase, past corridors where laughter and sighs escaped from behind closed doors. His heartbeat quickened with each step until he feared it might be audible.

"This chamber has been prepared for you," Madame Solange said, opening a door to reveal a room draped in rich burgundy velvet. A large four-poster bed dominated the space, its dark wooden posts carved with entwined figures that made Étienne adjust his collar nervously. Candles flickered in ornate holders, casting dancing shadows across walls adorned with paintings that would certainly never be displayed in the university library.

"Remember, Monsieur Beauchamp," she said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "the most valuable lessons are learned through experience, not books. Your curiosity is... refreshing. Allow yourself to be taught tonight." With a knowing glance at his trembling hands, she added, "Your companion will arrive momentarily. I believe you'll find this particular tutorial worth every franc."

With that enigmatic statement, she closed the door, leaving Étienne alone with his racing thoughts and the sudden, thrilling certainty that tonight would forever divide his life into before and after.
