- #1Cultivation Realms & Absolute Hierarchyselective
Keys: Dao Enlightenment, cultivation, Peak stage, Early stage, Qi Condensation, realm, Body Tempering, Golden Core, Ascension, Nascent Soul, Soul Transformation, cultivation stage, major realm, Late stage, realms, power scaling, Middle stage, Foundation Establishment, power scale, Law Domain, Core Formation
Cultivation is the refinement of body, Qi, soul, and finally one's authority over reality. A realm is not merely a larger reservoir: every major realm changes the KIND of power a cultivator can exert. Under ordinary conditions a major-realm gap is overwhelming. Exceptional physiques, supreme techniques, artifacts, formations, bloodlines, and superior Dao comprehension can narrow a gap; crossing two full major realms in direct battle is a legendary anomaly, not routine protagonist privilege. SUB-STAGES — Every major realm has Early, Middle, Late, and Peak phases unless explicitly divided into nine stages. A Peak cultivator is substantially stronger than an Early cultivator of the same realm, but the qualitative transformation of the next major realm is far greater. LOWER REALM — MORTAL FIRMAMENT OF CANGLAN
- BODY TEMPERING — Nine stages. Qi is used externally and internally to refine skin, flesh, tendons, bones, marrow, blood, organs, senses, and finally the whole body. No true Dantian reservoir yet. Early stages defeat trained mortals; middle stages bend iron and leap rooftops; late stages smash stone walls and survive wounds fatal to ordinary humans; Peak can shatter boulders, outrun warhorses, and fight dozens of mundane soldiers. Lifespan remains roughly mortal.
- QI CONDENSATION — Nine stages. Dantian opens; gaseous Qi is stored and circulated. True techniques, talismans, spiritual senses, elemental arts, and artifact activation become possible. Early cultivators dominate mundane troops; Peak experts can tear through buildings, cross short distances in bursts, and devastate a town district during an unrestricted battle. Typical lifespan: 120–180 years.
- FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT — Qi becomes a liquid Spiritual Sea and the cultivator establishes the architecture upon which every later realm rests. Sword/treasure flight becomes sustainable; spiritual sense expands dramatically; ordinary weapons become nearly irrelevant. A Foundation expert can massacre formations of Qi Condensation cultivators, destroy fortifications, and decide the fate of a small city. Typical lifespan: 250–400 years.
- CORE FORMATION / GOLDEN CORE — The Spiritual Sea collapses into a self-sustaining Golden Core: a miniature furnace of compressed power. Qi recovery, output, pressure, and technique scale leap enormously. Core cultivators can remain airborne for long periods, erase city blocks, split hills, redirect rivers with sustained arts, and destroy armies lacking cultivation support. Their Golden Core may detonate as a final attack. Typical lifespan: 600–900 years.
- NASCENT SOUL — The Golden Core births a soul-infant: a second spiritual body and anchor of identity. Spiritual sense can blanket cities; techniques can be cast through soul and intent; possession, body-swapping, soul escape, and difficult reincarnation become possible. Destruction of the flesh is no longer certain death. A Nascent Soul ancestor can ruin a great city, pulverize mountainsides, and treat most Core Formation cultivators as expendable juniors. Typical lifespan: 1,500–3,000 years if the soul remains intact.
- SOUL TRANSFORMATION — The Nascent Soul matures and partially merges with Heaven and Earth. The cultivator begins imposing Intent upon ambient Qi instead of relying solely on personal reserves. Soul pressure can incapacitate weaker beings without an attack. Great distances can be crossed by void-step or comparable arts; mountains, valleys, and regional weather can be reshaped in serious combat. A Soul Transformation patriarch is a strategic weapon capable of threatening kingdoms and great sects. Typical lifespan: 4,000–8,000 years.
- DAO ENLIGHTENMENT — The mortal pinnacle. The cultivator comprehends a fundamental Worldly Law deeply enough to manifest a LAW DOMAIN: an area where reality preferentially obeys their understanding. A Sword Dao expert may make every blade of grass carry Sword Intent; a Fire Dao expert can deny ordinary flame, ignite Qi itself, or turn clouds into a burning sea. Early Dao Enlightenment threatens regions; Peak experts can scar provinces, sever mountain ranges, suppress lesser armies by presence, and survive attacks that would erase lesser cultivators. They cannot freely destroy Canglan because the Great Sealing and Heavenly Dao suppress power that exceeds the Lower Realm's tolerance. Typical lifespan: 10,000+ years, though tribulations and Dao erosion kill most long before natural death. ASCENSION — A Peak Dao Enlightenment cultivator must survive Ascension Tribulation and force passage through the broken Gate of Tianzhu. This is not simply 'the next breakthrough': mortal Qi, body, soul, and Law must be reforged to tolerate Immortal Qi. Failure can annihilate body, soul, karmic imprint, or return a ruined remnant to Canglan. POWER-SCALE RULE OF THUMB • Same realm: technique, phase, physique, artifacts, terrain, and Dao comprehension decide the battle. • One minor phase gap: meaningful but routinely overcome by excellence. • Two or three minor phases: severe disadvantage. • One full major realm: normally decisive; victory from below requires an exceptional advantage and carries real cost. • Two full major realms: essentially impossible in a clean duel without a world-class treasure, prepared formation, forbidden sacrifice, suppressed opponent, or similarly extraordinary circumstance. • Three major realms: the weaker party is not a combatant; they are collateral unless protected by equivalent external power. Spiritual pressure follows the same hierarchy. Powerful experts need not attack to make weaker cultivators kneel, bleed, lose control of Qi, or become unable to move. QUALITY MATTERS — Foundations can be Cracked, Common, Refined, Flawless, or Heavenly. Golden Cores may likewise vary in purity and Dao inscriptions. Superior quality increases efficiency, stability, breakthrough odds, and same-realm combat power but does NOT erase major-realm laws. High-rank Physiques (Rank 1 Mythical through Rank 20 Uncommon; lower number is rarer) and exceptional bloodlines raise potential. Their unusual transformations may produce stronger breakthrough phenomena and, where a true tribulation is actually due, can intensify that tribulation. Alternative paths include Body Cultivation and Soul Cultivation. They use the same broad power logic but transform different aspects first. In Canglan, ordinary advancement through Body Tempering, Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, Soul Transformation, and Dao Enlightenment does NOT automatically summon a Heavenly Tribulation. Breakthrough phenomena, instability, Qi Deviation, Heart Demons, damaged meridians, shattered cultivation, madness, body destruction, soul damage, or monstrous mutation can still occur according to the method and circumstances. The first universal, unavoidable Heavenly Tribulation of the mortal path is the Ascension Tribulation at Peak Dao Enlightenment.
- #2Heavenly Dao, Karma, Breakthroughs & Dao Heart
Keys: karmic, Qi Deviation, karma, Inner Demons, Severing of Karma, Karmic Threads, Heavenly Tribulation, Heavenly Dao, Dao Heart
The Heavenly Dao is the supreme impersonal cosmic order expressed through the laws of the firmament. Cultivators often describe it as a will because it can respond to cultivation, oaths, karma and world-defying acts, but it is not a moral deity that rewards virtue or punishes vice. KARMA is consequence and connection, not a good-versus-evil score. Debts, favors, murders, vows, mentorship, bloodlines, stolen opportunities and unresolved grievances create karmic threads. Killing a powerful heir creates ordinary social consequences through family, sect and allies and may create karmic entanglement; it does not automatically place a moral 'black mark' on the soul or guarantee punitive lightning. Saving an enemy can create a debt just as killing a saint can create a grievance. TRIBULATIONS are specific cosmic examinations, not mandatory weather at every major breakthrough. In Canglan, the normal mortal ladder from Body Tempering through Dao Enlightenment has no universal lightning tribulation at each realm. Individual techniques, abnormal transformations, forbidden methods, pills, artifacts or exceptional circumstances may provoke breakthrough phenomena or special tribulations. Ascension from Peak Dao Enlightenment through the broken Gate of Tianzhu is the first universal unavoidable Heavenly Tribulation of the mortal path. Higher Tianzhu transformations may face true Heavenly or Dao Tribulations when the change in existence or authority warrants one. DAO HEART is the stable core of a cultivator's conviction and understanding. It is not morality. Internal contradiction, unresolved obsession, terror, grief or loss of belief in one's own path can create Heart Demons or destabilize cultivation; a ruthless cultivator can possess an exceptionally firm Dao Heart. QI DEVIATION is catastrophic loss of control caused by flawed circulation, incompatible methods, injury during cultivation, forced breakthroughs, Heart Demons or similar disruption. Severity ranges from damaged meridians and lost cultivation to body destruction, soul injury or monstrous mutation. Death does not automatically mean total soul annihilation below Nascent Soul. Ordinary souls usually lose cohesion and enter Samsara unless preserved, destroyed or otherwise intercepted; see 'Death, Souls, Samsara & Reincarnation'.
- #3Azure Sword Sect & Verdant Cloud Mountain Rangeselective
Keys: Jian Wushuang, Verdant Cloud, Verdant Cloud Mountain, Grand Azure Heaven Sealing Formation, Sword Trial Abyss, Azure Sword Sect, Azure Cloud Qi Manual
Azure Sword Sect is one of Canglan's foremost Righteous lineages and a principal pillar of the Four Symbols Alliance. Its headquarters occupy the Verdant Cloud Mountain Range: thousands of steep sword-like peaks wrapped in spiritual mist and naturally occurring Sword Qi. The Grand Azure Heaven Sealing Formation protects the inner mountains, while lesser formations divide public halls, disciple peaks, mines, herb valleys, prisons, archives and sealed inheritance grounds. The sect is old, wealthy and dangerous. It controls Spirit Stone mines, herb gardens, subordinate clans, market rights and protected settlements. Its disciples are expected to answer demonic incursions and major regional threats, but "Righteous" does not mean egalitarian or gentle. Seniority, lineage, master-disciple ties, contribution, family backing and cultivation all matter. Discipline can be sincere while favoritism, factional maneuvering, harsh punishment and quiet corruption exist beside it. Hierarchy commonly runs Outer Disciple → Inner Disciple → Core Disciple → Elder → Grand Elder / Patriarch, with specialized halls for law enforcement, missions, alchemy, formations, archives and logistics. Shixiong/Shijie seniority is socially important but does not erase formal office or cultivation rank. The Sword Trial Abyss preserves generations of sword marks and residual Intent; it is used for training and selection, not as a machine that declares a destined hero. The Grand Library contains public manuals, restricted floors and sealed collections whose access depends on status and contribution. Sect Master Jian Wushuang currently leads the sect. The Grand Library, mission halls and specialized peaks employ many elders and experts whose histories and abilities need not be predetermined until campaign play requires them. The sect has a long blood feud with the Ashen Bone Cult. That conflict is political, territorial and historical as well as ideological; both sides remember specific massacres, stolen resources and dead experts rather than fighting because a genre label requires it.
- #4Major Powers of Canglan
Keys: Ashen Bone Cult, Myriad Beast Manor, Crimson River Sect, Demonic Alliance, Golden Fortune Merchant Guild, Netherworld Pavilion, Four Symbols Alliance, Tian Dynasty, Asura's Path, Unseen Tower
Canglan's great powers overlap rather than forming two perfectly clean camps. FOUR SYMBOLS ALLIANCE — The dominant Righteous coalition: Azure Sword Sect in the east, Vermilion Bird Pavilion in the south, White Tiger Clan in the west and Black Tortoise Fortress in the north. They cooperate against existential threats and large demonic offensives while competing over territory, mines, disciples, prestige and influence. Their public law condemns soul harvesting, uncontrolled corpse refinement, sacrificial cultivation and similar practices, but enforcement is shaped by politics and power. DEMONIC ALLIANCE — A looser coalition formed by lineages that reject or violate orthodox restrictions. The Ashen Bone Cult specializes in corpse puppetry, Yin arts and soul refinement. The Crimson River Sect practices blood-path methods rooted in the Blood Sea Archipelago. Demonic factions can trade, negotiate, feud and keep treaties; they are not a single personality. Some practices are genuinely predatory because they require victims. Others are condemned because they threaten orthodox monopolies or violate accepted custom. TIAN DYNASTY — Rules the Central Heavenly Continent from Sky-Piercing Capital. It possesses mortal bureaucracy, cultivator officials, armies, noble houses and its own inheritance. The throne cannot simply command every great sect, but neither can sects ignore imperial taxation, land, roads, cities and noble politics. GOLDEN FORTUNE MERCHANT GUILD — A major commercial network connecting mines, caravans, auctions, crafters and high-end buyers. It survives by neutrality, contracts, information and enough armed force to make casual seizure expensive. NEUTRAL OR INDEPENDENT POWERS — Asura's Path Sect, Myriad Beast Manor, Unseen Tower, Netherworld Pavilion, Pill Pavilion and numerous clans or loose-cultivator leagues pursue their own interests. "Neutral" means unbound to the two great ideological coalitions, not harmless. Power blocs are not moral alignments. A Righteous elder may protect a province and ruin a weaker clan for a mine in the same year. A demonic cultivator may honor a contract because reputation is profitable. Institutions contain believers, opportunists, hypocrites, reformers, predators and ordinary people.
- #5Face, Hierarchy & Social Combat
Keys: Pressure of Face, kowtow, face-slapping, Shijie, courting death, Young Master, Shixiong
Face is a tangible social force (Pressure of Face) because reputation affects authority, alliances, marriage prospects, business, disciple loyalty, patronage and whether threats are believed. Giving face shows respect or creates room for compromise. People may tolerate privately what they cannot accept before subordinates or rivals. Saving face may involve an apology, gift, compensation, intermediary, bounded duel, political concession, strategic retreat, graceful exit, private revenge or escalation—not an automatic face-slapping sequence. Smart cultivators manage escalation; fools sometimes do not. Cultivation realm, sect seniority, bloodline, clan, master, family, office, patronage, wealth, marriage ties and reputation shape hierarchy. A mortal servant, outer disciple, elder's descendant and sect heir inhabit different social realities, and people notice without explaining the ranking aloud. Who was harmed, who witnessed it, who cares, what custom permits and whose backing can retaliate matter alongside written rules. Power can bring better rooms, faster service, private information, favorable prices, leniency and restricted access. Some resent this, some accept it, some exploit it and some cultivate precisely to obtain it. Young masters, elders, demonic cultivators and disciples do not share mandatory voices. Stock idioms such as 'courting death' or 'eyes but failing to see Mount Tai' exist, but use them as cultural language rather than compulsory dialogue. Betrayal for manuals, pills or artifacts is possible, not universal. Threats should reflect the speaker's means and character. Collective punishment, hostage-taking, crippling cultivation, confiscation and bloodline reprisals exist, but they are serious acts with political and karmic consequences rather than automatic responses to every insult. Formal protocols include Coming of Age Ceremony and Challenge Protocol.
- #6Economy – Spirit Stones & Trade
Keys: Peak-Grade, Blackwind Market, Spirit Stones, Spirit Stone, Golden Jade Auction, Spirit Vein, Myriad Treasures Pavilion
The cultivation economy is fueled by Spirit Stones—crystalline condensed Qi serving as currency and cultivation resource. Grades are Low → Mid → High → Peak at a strict 100:1 conversion. Wealth means access to time, safety, teachers, pills, caves, techniques and opportunities. Major sects and clans wage wars over Spirit Veins. That wealth has a material source. Mines require labor and protection; monster materials require killing; rare herbs create territorial disputes; caravans need guards because robbery exists; clans and sects extract taxes and resources from dominated territories. Wars, harvests, beast tides and closed routes affect supply. A beautiful weapon may contain something dangerous that had to die. Keep this reality underneath commerce without explaining it every time an item changes hands. High-end commerce includes the Golden Jade Auction House and Myriad Treasures Pavilion. Barter in herbs, pills, artifacts, intelligence and favors is common. Blackwind Market and similar illicit markets may trade restricted pills, stolen techniques, poisons, corpse or monster materials, forged identities, questionable maps and goods whose prior owners did not surrender them willingly. Their existence does not require every visit to produce a crime. The Golden Fortune Merchant Guild is a major player; even 'Thousand Treasures' Su operates within it. Peak-Grade Spirit Stones are rare and produce gentle nourishing warmth through the meridians when safely absorbed. Gifts, bribes, loans, gambling, patronage, speculation, hoarding and absurd luxury are normal economic behavior, but scenes should not become accounting simulations.
- #7Artifact Grades & Refining
Keys: Artifact, sealing, Heaven Artifact, refining, Spirit Artifact, Earth Artifact, artifact, Divine Artifact, talisman, puppet
Artifact hierarchy commonly runs Mortal Tool → Spirit Artifact → Earth Artifact → Heaven Artifact → Divine Artifact, with Low/Mid/High/Peak distinctions used where useful. Grade describes the quality and authority an artifact can reliably express; compatibility, condition, wielder, technique and purpose still matter. Refiners shape materials, Qi pathways, inscriptions and artifact cores into weapons, armor, vessels, furnaces, tools and specialized devices. Exceptional artifacts may develop spirits or grow alongside long-term wielders, but this is uncommon rather than automatic. Talismans store prepared effects for later release. Puppetry ranges from mechanical or formation-driven constructs to corpse and soul methods condemned by many orthodox powers. Sealing arts suppress, contain, isolate or restrict beings, objects, techniques and dangerous phenomena. Craft mastery is separate from cultivation realm. More Qi expands what a craftsperson can attempt, but knowledge, precision, materials, tools and experience determine whether the work succeeds.
- #8Alchemy & Pills
Keys: Pill Clouds, Nine Orifices Pill, alchemy, Pill Tribulation, Foundation Establishment Pill, Nine-Revolving Soul Return Pill, Pill Pavilion
Alchemy is the controlled refinement of spiritual plants, beast materials, minerals and other essences into pills, powders, elixirs and medicinal pastes. Success depends on ingredient quality, furnace control, flame, timing, formula comprehension and the alchemist's ability to manage conflicting Qi. Pills range from common cultivation aids to medicines capable of rebuilding meridians, preserving a soul, suppressing poison or assisting a dangerous breakthrough. Powerful pills may produce Pill Clouds, unusual fragrance, Dao resonance or—at truly exceptional grades—a Pill Tribulation. Such phenomena are rare signs of quality or abnormal authority, not mandatory fireworks for every expensive pill. The Pill Pavilion is a major institutional power because cultivators need medicine and because control of formulas, herb territories and trained alchemists creates political leverage. It licenses some markets, guards proprietary formulas, sponsors herb expeditions and competes with clan alchemists, wandering refiners and sect halls. Alchemy is not clean commerce. Rare ingredients may come from territorial herbs, dissected spiritual beasts, battlefield remains or substances whose collection is illegal in orthodox territory. Formula theft, counterfeit pills, ingredient substitution, poisonings and deliberate dependency all occur. A reputable alchemist's name can be worth more than a cauldron.
- #9World Overview – Canglan & Continents
Keys: Age of Sundering, Five Continents, Canglan, Tianzhu, Lower Realm, The Awakening, Upper Realm, Age of Ten Thousand Sects, Mortal Firmament, Sky-Piercing Capital
Mortal Firmament of Canglan = vast Lower Realm. Spiritual Qi relatively thin. Worldly Laws hard-cap cultivation at peak Dao Enlightenment. Ultimate goal: survive Ascension Tribulation into Upper Realm (Empyrean Dominion of Tianzhu) with denser Immortal Qi and more malleable laws (see 'The Empyrean Dominion of Tianzhu' for depth). Five Continents separated by storm-wracked oceans:
- Central Heavenly Continent: prosperous heartland — Azure Sword Sect, Tian Dynasty & Tian Imperial Palace, Academy of a Hundred Schools, Pill Pavilion, Sky-Piercing Capital (Grand Canal of Ten Thousand Flowers).
- Southern Phoenix Continent: volcanic — Golden Crow Empire, Vermilion Bird Pavilion (Sunken Caldera), Sea of Flames, Sunken Sands of Eternity (warped time).
- Western Tiger Continent: metallic mountains — White Tiger Clan (Adamantine Mountain), Saber Monarch's Domain, Iron Fist Clan.
- Northern Crown Continent: endless ice (Northern Ice Fields), mobile Black Tortoise Fortress.
- Eastern Dragonsea Archipelago: mist-shrouded islands — Crimson River Sect (Blood Sea Archipelago), Spirit-Scaled River-kin, Whispering Coral Labyrinth. Historical Ages: primordial Age of Sundering, dark Age of Silence, current Age of Ten Thousand Sects. Default era "The Awakening" (~500 years after last Demonic Calamity).
- #10Secret Realms, Ruins & Inheritances
Keys: ruins, secret realm, remnant soul, ancient ruin, inheritance, Secret Realm, pocket dimension
Secret Realms are sealed or unstable spaces left by ancient cultivators, destroyed powers, unusual natural laws or historical catastrophes. Some are true pocket dimensions; others are isolated valleys, buried ruins, folded spaces or fragments caught between realms. They vary enormously. A realm may preserve dense ancient Qi, extinct species, abandoned settlements, damaged formations, old records, dangerous ecosystems or a cultivator's inheritance. Many contain nothing useful to the person who finds them. Some have already been looted repeatedly. INHERITANCES are equally varied. A genuine inheritance may include a technique, craft, memory, artifact, responsibility, oath, enemy or unfinished work. Remnant souls can teach, bargain, deceive, attempt possession or simply be dead. Passing a trial does not guarantee compatibility with what remains. ACCESS depends on the site: cycles of Heaven and Earth, keys, bloodlines, formations, spatial instability, deliberate excavation or simple discovery. Major openings attract sects, clans, merchants, criminals and governments because access itself becomes political. DANGER follows the site's origin rather than a universal dungeon formula. Old formations fail unpredictably; beasts may have built ecosystems inside; distorted laws can alter movement, perception or Qi; rival explorers are often more dangerous than the ruin. Not every ruin contains a supreme legacy, and no inheritance is reserved for a particular generation or protagonist.
- #11Cultivation Society: Status, Roles & Reputationselective
Keys: Loose Cultivator, social status, lead disciple, cultivation status, Saint, Saintess, elder, clan heir, sect heir
Cultivation society recognizes recurring social roles, but none determines personality. HEIRS AND SCIONS inherit backing, teachers, property, marriage value and enemies. Some become entitled; others are disciplined precisely because their family has too much to lose. SAINTS, SAINTESSES AND LEAD DISCIPLES are institutional representatives as much as talented cultivators. Their behavior affects sect prestige, diplomacy and succession politics. ELDERS AND HIDDEN EXPERTS may hold obscure posts, retire, travel anonymously or conceal injuries and enemies. Modest appearance is not proof of hidden greatness, and genuine experts do not exist to reward perceptive juniors. LOOSE CULTIVATORS trade institutional protection for independence. Many work as guards, hunters, healers, crafters, caravan escorts, brokers, explorers or mercenaries. Their greatest vulnerability is not weakness alone but lack of backing when disputes become political. DEMONIC CULTIVATORS are defined by lineage and method more than clothing or temperament. Some arts require predation; others are merely forbidden, politically inconvenient or culturally despised. Reputation matters because a cultivator known for oath-breaking or uncontrolled slaughter eventually finds fewer people willing to bargain. CELEBRATED BEAUTY is social capital and danger rather than a personality type. Attractive cultivators can receive gifts, harassment, marriage pressure, patronage or suspicion, particularly when beauty is linked to a rare physique or prestigious bloodline. They remain people with ordinary preferences and agency. BATTLE CULTIVATORS, SCHOLARS, CRAFTERS, OFFICIALS, MERCHANTS and MONASTICS form their own subcultures. A person's cultivation realm matters, but so do profession, office, lineage, wealth, master and who will retaliate if they are harmed.
- #12Dual Cultivation, Intimacy & Dao Companionsselective
Keys: dual cultivator, Dao Companion, cauldron cultivation, Extreme Yin Physique, Yin Yang cultivation, Dual Cultivation
Dual Cultivation is a family of methods that circulate complementary Qi between two or more cultivators. Some schools use sexual intimacy; others use paired meditation, synchronized breathing, meridian contact, ritual dance or linked techniques. Results depend on the method, cultivation compatibility and skill. It can improve efficiency, heal imbalance, refine Yin/Yang qualities or assist a bottleneck, but it does not automatically create flawless foundations or eternal love. DAO COMPANIONS are partners who recognize one another as companions on the cultivation path. The bond may include love, sex, marriage, political alliance, shared property, mutual protection or none of these in equal measure. Some remain together for centuries; some separate; some become enemies. Families and sects may encourage or arrange pairings for bloodline, alliance or physique compatibility. CAULDRON METHODS use another person's body, essence, bloodline or cultivated Yin/Yang as material. Predatory versions can drain cultivation, fertility, vitality, lifespan or soul essence and are among the reasons certain dual-cultivation lineages are feared. Orthodox powers publicly condemn many such methods while powerful families may quietly tolerate coercive marriages, concubinage, purchased companions or exploitative contracts when politics makes enforcement inconvenient. Rare physiques can make a cultivator desirable as a partner or target, but compatibility is not destiny and does not transfer ownership. Kidnapping, coercion, seduction, transactional intimacy and genuine affection all exist in the setting; their consequences depend on people, law, power, reputation and karma rather than a universal moral score. Cultivation society is neither prudish nor uniformly libertine. Attitudes vary by sect, clan, region, generation and method. Pleasure houses, courtesans, arranged marriages, sworn companions, secret affairs and celibate traditions can all exist without every intimate relationship becoming a cosmic event.
- #13Formations & Arraysselective
Keys: Myriad Stars Formation, Array, Formation, Grand Azure Heaven Sealing Formation, formation master, formation breaking
Formations (arrays) are structured arrangements of Qi, materials, inscriptions, terrain and anchors used to defend, attack, conceal, gather energy, suppress movement, preserve environments or alter local conditions. A formation's strength depends on design, anchors, energy supply, terrain, maintenance and the cultivator operating it. Prepared formations can threaten opponents above the maker's personal combat realm because the formation borrows power from stored resources and environment. This advantage is not unlimited: damaged nodes, exhausted Spirit Stones, disrupted ley lines, stolen control seals and knowledgeable saboteurs can collapse an otherwise superior array. Large sect formations may cover mountains or cities. The Grand Azure Heaven Sealing Formation protects the Verdant Cloud Mountain Range. Other arrays gather Qi, hide valleys, isolate prisons, defend caravans, preserve herb gardens or turn prepared terrain into killing grounds. FORMATION BREAKING is a craft of observation and testing. Experts study flow, rhythm, anchors, false nodes and the relationship between the array and its terrain. Some brute-force weak points; others infiltrate maintenance routes, poison an energy source, alter an inscription or seize a control token. Demonic formations may use blood, corpses, souls or living sacrifices as fuel. Orthodox formations can also be ruthless: a fortress array may drain a surrounding Spirit Vein dry or sacrifice subordinate nodes to preserve the core. The moral reputation of an array depends partly on what powers it and who pays the cost.
- #14Spiritual Beasts & Beast Taming
Keys: Beast Taming, Beast Taming Ring, Myriad Beast Forest, Flood Dragon, Jade-Eyed Wind Serpent, Beast Tide, Rank 4, Rank 1, spiritual beast
Spiritual Beasts ranked similarly to cultivators. Rank 1 ≈ Qi Condensation; Rank 4 can threaten Foundation or early Core Formation. Myriad Beast Forest is primary wilderness for beasts of all ranks and rare herbs. Beast Tide = catastrophic mass frenzy that can overwhelm cities and sect outer defences; its roar freezes outer disciples' blood. Beast Taming: specialised profession. Beast Taming Ring (or similar) forms contract with willing or dominated beast. Tamed beasts fight alongside master, share senses, serve as mounts/storage. Legendary: Flood Dragon, Azure Dragon remnant, World Tree guardians. Demonic cultivators may refine beasts into living weapons or bloodline sources. Jade-Eyed Wind Serpent is classic Rank 1 guardian of rare herbs (e.g. Glimmering Heart Grass) on outer peaks — scales shimmer like polished stone, faint dangerous aura even in slumber.
- #15Non-Human Races
Keys: Ashen-Blooded Orcs, Spirit-Scaled River-kin, non-human, Stoneheart Dwarves, Sylph-wing, Veiled Djinn
Non-human races also pursue the Great Dao:
- Stoneheart Dwarves: master smiths and artifact refiners of the metallic Western Tiger Continent mountains. Naturally tough bodies, excel at Dao of Refining.
- Spirit-Scaled River-kin: amphibious people of Eastern Dragonsea Archipelago. Navigate Whispering Coral Labyrinth, natural water Qi affinity, breathe underwater.
- Sylph-wing Glade-Dwellers: graceful winged beings linked to Hanging Gardens of the Sylphs. Affinity with wind and pure spiritual energy.
- Ashen-Blooded Orcs: fierce warriors often among demonic or battle factions; powerful Body Cultivation bloodline.
- Veiled Djinn: enigmatic beings of smoke and illusion, masters of Dao of Deception and sealing arts. Each race has unique place in the pursuit of immortality. Intermarriage / dual cultivation between races is rare but can produce unique hybrid physiques.
- #16The Three Ages: From Sundering to the Ten Thousand Sects
Keys: Ancient War, Age of Sundering, Fall of Pill Emperor Valley, First Ascension, Nine Sovereigns, Pact of Azure Dawn, Heavenfall Cataclysm, Demonic Calamity, World-Sealing Pagoda, Age of Ten Thousand Sects, Age of Silence, War of the Two Emperors
The recorded history of the Mortal Firmament of Canglan is divided into three Ages, each separated by catastrophe. The oldest surviving accounts are fragmentary inscriptions and corrupted jade slips, and much of what follows is reconstructed from the sealed archives of the Whispering Library and the inherited memories of artifact-spirits. THE AGE OF SUNDERING. Before the firmament took its present shape, Canglan's spiritual qi was dense and its Worldly Laws fluid. Nine Sovereigns — god-king cultivators whose realms transcended anything now possible — ruled the primordial continent of Cang, each commanding law-threads of reality itself. The Ancient War began when the Nine quarreled over the Gate of Tianzhu, the single stable passage to the Upper Realm: some Sovereigns held that mortals should be elevated through it, others that the gate must be claimed by conquest and the Upper Realm invaded. The war lasted an epoch. To arm their legions, the Sovereigns refined their own severed dao-hearts and the corpses of primordial beasts into the Divine Artifacts — the World-Piercing Spear hammered from a Sovereign's spear-intent given flesh, the World-Sealing Pagoda cast to cage a rival's realm, the Imperial Jade Seal carved to command the loyalty of living law, the Aegis of the World Turtle shaped from the last primordial turtle's shell, the Myriad Soul Cauldron fed on the war's uncounted dead. The war ended not in victory but in the Heavenfall Cataclysm: the Gate of Tianzhu was shattered, the primordial continent broke into the Five Continents, and the survivors of both factions jointly enacted the Great Sealing — the rigid Worldly Laws and thin qi of the present age are not Canglan's natural state but the wound-scars of that sealing, deliberately locking the Lower Realm so no Sovereign-level power could ever rise again. The Nine Sovereigns vanished; whether dead, ascended, or sealed is the oldest unanswered question in the firmament. Each was bonded to one of the Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures, primordial existences that scattered rather than vanished with them (see the Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures entries) -- but a Treasure surfacing proves nothing about its Sovereign, and no Lower Realm record has ever confirmed one. THE AGE OF SILENCE. In the aftermath, cultivation nearly died. Qi was too thin for the old paths; the rigid laws shattered any who reached too high. Records were deliberately destroyed by the Great Sealing's architects, leaving millennia of darkness — hence the name. Survivors of the Sovereigns' legions, denied ascension and denied death, twisted into the first demonic beings; their periodic eruptions into the mortal world are remembered as the Demonic Calamities. The era's end came with the First Ascension: a nameless sword-cultivator of the Azure lineage proved the heavens had left one door open — that one who reached peak Dao Enlightenment could force passage through the broken gate by surviving Ascension Tribulation. Word of the feat, and of the Pact of Azure Dawn in which scattered survivors swore to preserve and teach cultivation rather than hoard it, lit the first beacon of the new age. THE AGE OF TEN THOUSAND SECTS. From the Pact's signatories grew the great orthodox lineages — the Azure Sword Sect foremost among them — and over centuries ten thousand lesser sects flowered across the Five Continents. The age has known two defining catastrophes. The War of the Two Emperors, nearly two thousand years past, began when the Tian Dynasty's founder and the rival Radiant Emperor both claimed the Mandate of the Central Continent; their armies clashed with Heaven Artifacts, and the Tian Imperial Palace's eventual victory was purchased with half the continent's cultivation world. The Fall of Pill Emperor Valley came five hundred years ago, during the most recent Demonic Calamity: the greatest alchemical power of the age was annihilated in a single night, its Dao of the Pill scattered, its demonic attackers never identified — an open wound that still bleeds influence into the present Awakening era, as the gathering Spiritual Tide stirs old graves and older artifacts.
- #17The Founding of the Four Symbols Alliance and the Demonic Alliance
Keys: Gui Wang, Shattered Devil's Spine, Ashen Bone Cult, Black Tortoise Fortress, Blood Sea Archipelago, Pact of Azure Dawn, Crimson River Sect, Four Symbols Alliance, Azure Sword Sect, Fall of Pill Emperor Valley, White Tiger Clan, Vermilion Bird Pavilion
THE FOUR SYMBOLS ALLIANCE. The Azure Sword Sect is the orthodox lineage in direct descent from the nameless sword-cultivator of the First Ascension; its founding masters were the Pact of Azure Dawn's chief signatories, and the sect still holds the Pact's original oath-tablet in its Verdant Cloud sanctum. From the East it taught the sword across the Five Continents for centuries before the Alliance existed. The other three powers were not Pact founders but Pact beneficiaries — lineages raised by Azure Sword missionaries in the Pact's spirit of shared teaching. The Vermilion Bird Pavilion began as a caldera-temple of flame-keepers in the Sunken Caldera, priestesses who tamed the region's fire-veins after discovering a molting feather of primordial fire still burning at the caldera's heart; the feather's warmth made the South habitable, and the Pavilion's ritual mastery of fire and renewal became its dao. The White Tiger Clan is older than its sect status: a beast-blooded mountain folk of Adamantine Mountain whose ancestors, by clan memory, fought as vanguard troops in the Ancient War and were left behind when the Sovereigns vanished. The clan mined the mountain's god-metal, forged the West's greatest weapons, and formalized its bloodline battle-arts under Azure Sword tutelage. The Black Tortoise Fortress was raised in the Northern Ice Fields by monks who found the immense shell of a lesser primordial turtle frozen in the ice — kin, some say, to the beast whose shell became the Aegis of the World Turtle — and built their fortress-monastery into and upon it, their endurance-and-defense dao drawn from the shell's lingering law-threads. The four powers bound themselves into the Four Symbols Alliance five hundred years ago, directly in the aftermath of the Fall of Pill Emperor Valley. The Valley's overnight annihilation during the last Demonic Calamity terrified the orthodox world: if the age's greatest alchemical power could die unnamed in a single night, no lone sect was safe. The Azure Sword Sect summoned the other three powers — each already guarding one cardinal direction — and the four swore the Symbols Oath: mutual defense, joint suppression of the demonic path, and shared custody of the cardinal territories. The Alliance's hypocrisy — its willingness to sacrifice lesser sects and mortal towns for stability — was present from the beginning: the Oath binds the four to each other, not to the weak they claim to protect. THE DEMONIC ALLIANCE. Both great demonic powers are of human origin, not survivors of the Age of Silence — but both built their daos on that era's corrupted inheritance. The Ashen Bone Cult was founded roughly three thousand years ago by grave-keeper orders of the Shattered Devil's Spine, a mountain range that is, by the Cult's own sealed records, the petrified spine of a Sovereign slain in the Ancient War. The Spine still whispers law-threads of the dead god-king's hatred, and the grave-keepers who listened too long transcribed what they heard into the first copies of the Soul-Devouring Scripture. The Ashen Bone Patriarch of each generation is said to be less a master than a vessel the Spine itself chooses; master Gui Wang is the present era's dread instructor of corpse puppetry and soul-refinement, and the Cult's patient century-schemes treat the living world as a slow-harvested field. The Crimson River Sect rose from the War of the Two Emperors: when the Radiant Emperor's armies were broken and drowned in the Central Continent's southern shoals, so much cultivator blood pooled there that the sea itself soured and never cleansed — the Blood Sea Archipelago. Refugee descendants who learned to drink and refine that sea's blood founded the Sect, refining the drowned soldiers' residual cultivation into their blood-daos. The two powers formalized the Demonic Alliance only in the last several centuries, recognizing that the Four Symbols Oath had made their extinction a matter of orthodox doctrine. Whispered archives in the Unseen Tower claim the Alliance's founding act — never proven, never avenged — was the joint annihilation of Pill Emperor Valley, a proof of power and a warning that the four Symbols had not made the world safe, only divided it into two armed camps.
- #18The Machinery of Cultivation: Spiritual Roots, Techniques, and Meridians
Keys: Qi Deviation, elemental affinity, spiritual root testing, root purity, cultivation manual, meridian-mapping, Variant Lightning Spiritual Root, heaven-grade technique, root mismatch, dual root, Spiritual Root, meridians
Beneath the realm ladder lies the machinery that determines who climbs it and how fast. Three interlocking systems govern all cultivation: the Spiritual Root, the Technique, and the meridians. SPIRITUAL ROOT: Every mortal is born with an innately structured soul-organ that filters worldly Qi. The root is defined by elemental affinity to the Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth), with a rare sixth affinity -- Lightning -- appearing in perhaps one in a hundred thousand. A root's PURITY determines conversion efficiency: a high-purity root absorbs and refines Qi quickly; a turbid root loses most absorbed Qi as waste heat, slowing progress tenfold or worse. MULTIPLICITY cuts both ways: a dual or triple root grants breadth (more usable arts, elemental synergy) but splits purity, slowing realm advancement. Single-element common roots are the norm among sect disciples. A VARIANT root is a mutated single-element root that retains near-perfect purity while expressing an uncommon element or a hybrid expression -- most famously the Variant Lightning Spiritual Root, which channels Lightning through a Fire-type root structure. Variant roots are prized beyond common single roots and are typically claimed by great sects at testing. Spiritual root testing is performed at recruitment ages with probing arrays or root-testing crystals; purity is graded and recorded, and hidden sects sometimes abduct children whose results never reach the public registries. TECHNIQUE (Manual): A cultivation technique is not knowledge but a forged Qi-circulation pattern -- a written sequence of breath, posture, and mental imagery that shapes how raw worldly Qi is filtered, refined, and deposited into the Dantian. 'Practicing' a technique means running Qi through its prescribed circuit thousands of times until the pattern becomes semi-autonomic. Techniques are graded by the setting's canonical ladder (Mortal, Earth, Heaven, Divine, Immortal, Dao; see Techniques, Scriptures & Mastery) according to cycle efficiency and ceiling: a low-grade manual cannot liquefy Qi at Foundation, hard-limiting its user. MISMATCH is the central danger: each technique is compiled around a specific elemental filter. Running a Fire-attribute manual with a Water root forces the root to transmute Qi against its nature; the resulting impure, half-converted Qi accumulates as elemental conflict in the Dantian. This is the primary mundane cause of Qi Deviation -- meridian scarring, madness, or body rupture -- distinct from tribulation failure. Stolen or inherited manuals are doubly hazardous: many high-tier techniques carry embedded imprint-seals keyed to a bloodline or oath, and cultivating past the seal deliberately corrupts the circulation pattern, guaranteeing deviation. This is why sects treat manual theft as a capital crime and why fragmentary manuals from ruin-expeditions kill more treasure hunters than guardians do. MERIDIANS: The body's Qi channels, opened and widened progressively through Body Tempering's nine stages -- this is the mechanical reason Body Tempering precedes Qi Condensation. Condensed Qi cannot flow through unmapped or narrow channels; forced circulation ruptures them. Damaged or scarred meridians (from deviation, toxins, or combat) choke Qi flow permanently, crippling cultivation speed regardless of root purity -- a genius with three severed meridians cultivates slower than a turbid-rooted farmer's son. Meridian-mapping techniques, which let a healer or interrogator read an individual's unique channel layout, are guarded as fiercely as Heaven-grade manuals: knowing a cultivator's meridian map permits both precise healing and precisely targeted sabotage -- sealing channels, inducing deviation at a chosen realm bottleneck. Great sects reserve meridian-mapping for their own elders and medical pavilions, and its unauthorized use is punished as crippling-by-proxy. These three systems interlock: root purity sets the ceiling of speed, the technique's grade and elemental match sets the ceiling of realm, and meridian integrity determines whether either ceiling is reachable at all.
- #19Vermilion Bird Pavilion
Keys: Nine Suns Hearth Formation, Primordial Fire-Feather, Flame-Keepers, Vermilion Warmth Sutra, Ember Trials, Vermilion Bird Pavilion, Crimson River Sect, Matriarch Feng Zhuyin, fire-veins, Sunken Caldera
VERMILION BIRD PAVILION — the Southern Symbol of the Four Symbols Alliance, a matriarchal lineage of fire-priestesses whose dao is flame as renewal, not destruction. Pavilion Matriarch: Feng Zhuyin, a ninth flame-tier fire-cultivator said to have slept one full winter inside the Primordial Fire-Feather's glow and emerged unburnt. Headquarters: the Sunken Caldera — a vast volcanic basin where the molting feather of primordial fire still burns at the caldera's heart, its warmth making the hostile South habitable. The Pavilion's terraced temple-shrines ring the feather in descending rings, and the region's fire-veins are channeled by ritual into hearth, forge, and medicinal flame. Protected by the Nine Suns Hearth Formation, a defensive lattice woven from the caldera's own fire-veins: intruders find the very qi of the land turning hostile, their spiritual energy kindling against them until body and cultivation alike are scorched clean. Key features: the Feather Sanctum at the caldera's heart (admittance by Matriarch's word only), the Ember Trials where aspirants walk the fire-veins barefoot to prove their flame accepts them, and the Ash Gardens where fire-funeral rites return fallen sisters to the caldera. Hierarchy: Novice Keeper → Flame Adept → Fire-Priestess → Hearth Elder → Matriarch, rank earned through rite-mastery rather than raw cultivation. The Pavilion holds the South's finest fire-attribute pill-flames and renewal arts, and quietly inherited part of Pill Emperor Valley's orphaned alchemical demand after the Fall. Long-standing blood feud with the Crimson River Sect, whose blood-daos are anathema to the Pavilion's cleansing flame. Atmosphere: warm, ritualistic, proud, and fiercely protective of mortals who settle the caldera's warmth — yet dismissive of 'cold' northern dao. New Novice Keepers receive coarse vermilion robes, a bronze fire-lamp kindled from the feather's outer glow, the Jade Slip of the Low-Grade 'Vermilion Warmth Sutra', and a few Low-Grade Spirit Stones. The caldera itself is a living hearth whose breathing seasons the Pavilion's every rite.
- #20White Tiger Clan
Keys: Quarry Fang, Fang Bearer, White Tiger Bone-Forging Art, Adamantine Mountain, Ashen Bone Cult, Adamantine Gate, god-metal, Clan Sovereign Bai Cangya, bloodline battle-arts, White Tiger Clan
WHITE TIGER CLAN — the Western Symbol of the Four Symbols Alliance, a beast-blooded mountain folk older than its sect status: descendants of the Ancient War's vanguard troops, left behind when the Sovereigns vanished, whose ancestors' blood still answers the roar of the hunt. Clan Sovereign: Bai Cangya, a white-furred patriarch in his fourth century whose bloodline battle-arts are said to crack god-metal when he strikes in full beast-form. Headquarters: Adamantine Mountain — the god-metal peak the Clan has mined since before the Pact of Azure Dawn, its slopes pocked with forge-halls, quarry-cities, and war-beast paddocks carved directly into living ore. The mountain's dense metallic qi suits body-refiners and bloodline cultivators but crushes the meridians of the delicate. Protected by the Adamantine Gate, a fortress-seal of layered god-metal doors fused with the mountain itself; when sealed, the Gate drinks the mountain's qi and has never been breached — attackers report their blows ringing back into their own bones. Key features: the Ancestral Forge (where weapons are quenched in blood-oath, bonding them to a single bloodline), the Quarry of Echoes (where whelps learn to hunt by sound in total dark), and the Roar-Plaza where disputes are settled by formal duel rather than feud. Hierarchy: Whelp → Claw-Sworn → Fang Bearer → War Elder → Clan Sovereign, advancement by martial trial and forge-deed, never by seniority alone — a deliberate break from Azure Sword custom that the orthodox elders find barbaric. Long-standing blood feud with the Ashen Bone Cult, whose corpse puppetry desecrates the honored bones of Clan ancestors; no White Tiger will burn a cultist's corpse, preferring to entomb it in god-metal. Atmosphere: blunt, honorable, feast-proud, contemptuous of scheming city cultivators, with real internal friction between pure-blood and thin-blood lines. New Claw-Sworn receive a gray-hide tunic, a forged 'Quarry Fang' hatchet of crude god-metal alloy, the Jade Slip of the Low-Grade 'White Tiger Bone-Forging Art', and a few Low-Grade Spirit Stones. The mountain itself is an anvil whose slow heartbeat tempers every child born upon it.
- #21Black Tortoise Fortress
Keys: primordial turtle shell, Northern Ice Fields, Shell Keepers, Black Tortoise Fortress, Black Tortoise Stillness Sutra, World-Shell Stillness Array, Wall Monks, Aegis of the World Turtle, Abbot Xuan Zhen, law-threads
BLACK TORTOISE FORTRESS — the Northern Symbol of the Four Symbols Alliance, a fortress-monastery of endurance-monks whose dao is stillness, defense, and outlasting. Abbot: Xuan Zhen, a monk of the seventh stillness-tier who has not left the fortress in sixty years and is said to have once held the main gate alone through a nine-month demonic siege without drawing breath. Headquarters: the Northern Ice Fields — the Fortress is built into and atop the immense shell of a lesser primordial turtle found frozen in the ice, kin, some say, to the beast whose shell became the Aegis of the World Turtle. The shell's lingering law-threads still radiate a law of endurance; meditation upon it lets the monks harden body, qi, and will against any assault. Protected by the World-Shell Stillness Array, which channels the shell's law-threads through the entire fortress: when fully raised, the Fortress becomes functionally immovable and can seal itself for years without resupply, its qi circulation slowing to a hibernating crawl no siege can exhaust. Key features: the Shell Sanctum (meditation cells carved directly into living shell-bone, the deepest reserved for Abbot and Shell Keepers), the Ice Cloister where Wall Monks take vows of silence measured in decades, and the Ration Vault — the Fortress's pride, stocked against century-long sieges. Hierarchy: Postulant → Wall Monk → Shell Keeper → Ice Elder → Abbot, advancement by demonstrated endurance and adherence to vow rather than combat prowess. The Fortress has no blood feud; its doctrine forbids first attack, which draws quiet orthodox criticism — the Northern Symbol has let mortal towns freeze within sight of its walls, judging intervention a breaking of stillness. Atmosphere: glacial patience, ritual silence, absolute reliability once committed, and a slow council voice that frustrates the other three Symbols. New Postulants receive coarse black quilted robes, an iron walking staff, the Jade Slip of the Low-Grade 'Black Tortoise Stillness Sutra', a month's ration pills, and a few Low-Grade Spirit Stones. The shell beneath the Fortress is a sleeping patience, and the monks who live upon it learn to keep time with it.
- #22The Empyrean Dominion of Tianzhu (Upper Realm)
Keys: Dao Fruit, Immortal Foundation, Dao World, Empyrean, Transcendent, Heaven Immortal, Ascension, Empyrean Dominion, Marchlands, Upper Realm, Dao Sovereign, Tianzhu, True Immortal, Dao Lord, Gate of Tianzhu, Golden Immortal, Heavenly Domain, Mystic Immortal, Heavenborn
THE FIRMAMENT ABOVE THE FIRMAMENT — The Empyrean Dominion of Tianzhu is the Upper Realm proper: floating continents, pagoda-cities, cloud-rivers and ancient heavens where Immortal Qi is dense and Worldly Laws are vastly more complete. A newly Ascended peak expert of Canglan is formidable by mortal standards but enters Tianzhu at the bottom of a far taller hierarchy. The Upper Realm does not invalidate Lower Realm achievement: climbers possess unusually tempered foundations, while Heavenborn possess superior resources, inheritances and ambient Immortal Qi. THE IMMORTAL LADDER
- IMMORTAL FOUNDATION — Mortal Qi is burned away and replaced by Immortal Essence; body, soul, meridians and Dantian are rebuilt into an immortal lattice. Early Immortal Foundation can casually suppress Peak Dao Enlightenment cultivators under normal Upper-Realm laws. They can survive in the void between floating continents, regenerate grievous wounds, and sustain techniques that would exhaust mortal ancestors. Lifespan: tens of thousands of years.
- TRUE IMMORTAL — Immortal Essence circulates without leakage and the cultivator forms an Immortal Body whose cells carry Dao inscriptions. A True Immortal can project Law across hundreds of miles, rebuild a body from surviving immortal blood or soul-seed if their foundation remains, and destroy mortal-scale mountain chains without exhausting themselves. Their battles threaten Upper-Realm cities and lesser floating islands.
- HEAVEN IMMORTAL — The cultivator binds personal Dao to celestial phenomena and forms a HEAVENLY DOMAIN. Within it, ambient Immortal Qi answers automatically. They can cross enormous distances through spatial folds, suppress True Immortals by domain alone, alter regional climates for years, and break or stabilize floating landmasses. Great houses treat Heaven Immortals as pillars.
- MYSTIC IMMORTAL — Law is no longer merely commanded; multiple Law principles can be woven together into Mysteries. Space can be folded, causality locally distorted, souls restored from faint imprints, and ordinary formations bypassed by understanding their governing principles. A serious clash can devastate a vast Upper-Realm region. Mystic Immortals often rule sects, Marchlands, or major branches of Heavenborn houses.
- GOLDEN IMMORTAL — The cultivator condenses a DAO FRUIT: their life, Law, and identity become a self-consistent immortal principle. A Golden Immortal is extraordinarily difficult to erase; destroying the body is insufficient while the Dao Fruit remains whole. Their Law can persist after departure, bless or curse bloodlines, create stable pocket worlds, and leave inheritances that endure for ages. Golden Immortals are powers before whom ordinary immortal states negotiate rather than command.
- DAO LORD — A Golden Immortal whose Dao Fruit unfolds into a DAO WORLD. Their Domain becomes a semi-independent reality with its own rules, able to swallow lesser domains and sustain living ecosystems. Dao Lords can move or shatter great floating continents, seal spatial routes, and wage wars whose consequences remain for epochs. They are the rulers behind major Empyrean powers.
- DAO SOVEREIGN — A Dao Lord who seizes a complete LAW-THREAD: not merely using Fire, Space, Sword, Death, Time, etc., but holding recognized cosmic authority over an aspect of it. Within the scope of that authority, lesser cultivators' techniques may simply cease to function. Sovereigns can create enduring worlds, rewrite regional natural law, and contest the Heavenly Dao's local expressions. The Nine Sovereigns of Canglan's Age of Sundering are associated with this order of existence, though surviving records are contradictory.
- EMPYREAN / TRANSCENDENT — A disputed realm in sealed Heavenborn annals. Said to stand above individual Law-Threads and touch the architecture binding realms together. No reliable Lower-Realm source confirms a living Empyrean. Tianzhu's oldest powers treat the title with enough fear that scholars are executed for forging evidence of one. IMMORTAL POWER LOGIC — Immortal realms retain Early/Middle/Late/Peak phases. Crossing one immortal major realm is rarer and harder than doing so below Ascension because each realm represents deeper metaphysical authority. A Dao Lord cannot normally be defeated by an army of True Immortals any more than a mountain can be killed by arrows. At the highest levels, raw destructive radius is a poor measure: authority, immortality, sealing, causality, domain collision, and the ability to erase an opponent's recovery anchors matter more. THE BROKEN PASSAGE — The Gate of Tianzhu was shattered in the Heavenfall Cataclysm. Peak Dao Enlightenment cultivators may enter its fracture only through Ascension Tribulation. Survive, and the Ascended are expelled into the Dominion's border Marchlands; fail, and body, soul, cultivation, or karmic imprint may be destroyed. THE HEAVENBORN AND THE CLIMBERS — Tianzhu's native Heavenborn houses hold hereditary seats in the Empyrean Registry. Ascended mortals, called climbers and less flattering names, receive conferred rank and traditionally face a century of probation in the Marchlands. Heavenborn cultivation benefits from vast inheritances and dense Immortal Qi; climbers are respected and feared for foundations forged under Canglan's starvation and Great Sealing. Houses recruit exceptional climbers as sworn blades, marriage-assets, disciples, and political weapons. THE QUESTION THAT CLIMBS TOO — Heavenborn annals disagree on the Nine Sovereigns. Some claim they never reached Tianzhu; others seal every reference; heretical fragments say the Gate was broken from the far side to prevent something from passing, without agreeing in which direction. GM HOOKS — A Heavenborn house offers Registry sponsorship in exchange for false testimony about a rival heir's tribulation. An Empyrean archivist purchases or destroys Lower-Realm records of the First Ascension, claiming repeated knowledge of the path weakens the Great Sealing.
- #23Asura's Path Sect
Keys: Hundred Step Ring, Asura's Path Sect, Xiang Wuhui, Asura Road, Scarred Gorge, First Blade, Relinquished Shrine, Wound Ledger
ASURA'S PATH SECT — a boundary-dwelling order of battle maniacs who hold that combat is the only honest scripture: a life pressed against death teaches faster than a thousand spirit stones. Sect Master: Xiang Wuhui, the Unsheathed, an unbeaten old butcher who has never once declined a challenge, from farmhand to Foundation elder. Headquarters: the Scarred Gorge, a canyon of shattered dueling terraces carved into the no-sect's-land between the great alliances' borders. Its heart is the Asura Road, the entrance trial every aspirant must walk — a stone causeway of nine consecutive duels, fought one after another without rest, against sect members who bid for the honor of standing on it. Those who fall are carried out; those who finish, whatever their wounds, are Nameless no longer. Key features: the Wound Ledger, a cliff face where every recorded duel is carved in the loser's own hand; the Hundred Step Ring, the formal dueling ground, where no spectators are permitted because a bout is a prayer, not a show; and the Relinquished Shrine, hung with the weapons of every defeated challenger, surrendered by rule. Hierarchy: Nameless → Challenger → Duelist → Ring Elder → First Blade, ranked solely by duels won and entered in the Ledger — seniority means nothing, and elders have been demoted by cocky teenagers. The sect joins no alliance and petitions both for duels with their champions; both find them equally exhausting. Villagers bar doors at their marching songs; sects hire them as shock troops and regret the invoice. The rumor that they stole their name from the Adamantine Legion's Asura Monarch Namo delights them — they toast the coming day they will challenge that cosmic jailer himself, knowing they share nothing with him but a word. Their atmosphere is laughter mid-bout and scar-proud honesty. In the Gorge, death on the Road is called graduation, and the mourners drink.
- #24Myriad Beast Manor
Keys: Palisade of Horns, Pact Hall, Scent Bazaar, Beast Gardens, Myriad Beast Manor, Fei Yannian, Grand Tamer
MYRIAD BEAST MANOR — the civilized face of the beast-taming profession: a guild-house of tamers, handlers, brokers, and frontier scouts standing sentry at the green edge of the Myriad Beast Forest. It is emphatically not the Forest — the wood stays wild, unclaimed, and unclaimable — it is the treaty-line, marketplace, and school built against it. Manor Master: Fei Yannian, a soft-voiced grandmother whose pact-beast, a scarred old cloud-leopard, sleeps through her negotiations. Headquarters: the Manor proper, a walled estate of timber and horn-palisades at the Forest's border, guarded and defined by the Pact Hall, where Beast Taming Rings are forged and every contract between tamer and willing beast is witnessed and sealed. Key features: the Beast Gardens, mews and paddocks where tamed mounts, war-beasts, and carrying-beasts are boarded and broken to harness; the Scent Bazaar, where beasts are sold alongside pheromone-lures and trail-charms; and the Palisade of Horns, the watchtower line whose great horns sound the first warning when a Beast Tide stirs. Hierarchy: Stable Hand → Ring-Bearer → Pactsmith → Grand Tamer. The Manor's work is threefold: it trains tamers in the ring-and-contract craft, it brokers tamed beasts to every buyer without favor, and it leads the defense of the border towns when the Forest spills its tides — its shield-line has bought frontier villages three nights of evacuation more than once. Both great alliances buy from it, and both distrust it for selling to the other; the Manor prices a war-beast identically for a Symbol clan and a demonic cultivator, and refunds no one's politics. Atmosphere: warm straw and animal musk, whistle-language across the yards, children raised beside cubs. The Forest does not know the Manor exists, which is exactly how the Manor survives.
- #25Unseen Tower
Keys: Reading Ledger, Door of Deposit, Lending Rule, Quiet Index, Unseen Tower, Whisper Stacks, Shen Zhi
UNSEEN TOWER — the world's quietest power: a neutral archive that buys, indexes, and sells secrets, serving any reader at the same price and no side at any price. Head Archivist: Shen Zhi, called the Quiet Index, who has allegedly been at least three different people and answers no question about it. Headquarters: a grey tower with no fixed address — those who need it are sold directions that work exactly once, after which the way is gone and must be bought again. Its signature is the Whisper Stacks, halls where secrets are kept not as scrolls but as recorded whispers, graded by weight: gossip on the low shelves, blood on the high. The Tower's whispered archives already hold their most notorious claim — never proven, never avenged — that the founding act of the Four Symbols Alliance was the joint annihilation of Pill Emperor Valley, a proof of power and a warning that the four Symbols had not made the world safe, only divided it into two armed camps. The Alliance does not confirm it. The Tower does not sell its sources. Key features: the Whisper Stacks; the Reading Ledger, which records who has read what and is itself for sale; and the Door of Deposit, where informants leave unattributed secrets for grading and payment. Hierarchy: Whisper-Catcher → Scribe → Shelf-Keeper → Archivist. Its one law is the Lending Rule: any secret may be read by anyone who pays its weight — in coin, or in a secret of equal value — and exclusivity is never sold, which is why both the Four Symbols Alliance and the Demonic Alliance remain its best customers while quietly planning, separately, for the day the Tower knows too much. Atmosphere: dust, lamplight, transactions conducted in margins. The Tower keeps no army; it has never needed one, because burning it would only confirm what it holds.
- #26Netherworld Pavilion
Keys: Bridge of Nine Candles, The Ferryman, Dusky Ford, Netherworld Pavilion, Lantern Court, Silent Registry
NETHERWORLD PAVILION — a mortal-world assassin guild that treats killing as ferry-work: every contract is a crossing, every client pays the toll, and the dead are simply passengers delivered to the farther shore. Master: the Ferryman, a masked title passed down through generations, whose face no living member claims to have seen. Headquarters: the Lantern Court, hidden in the funeral quarter of the river city of Dusky Ford, its gate visible only between the last dusk bell and midnight. Its signature is the lantern rite: a contract is bought as a paper lantern, the target's name written in ink that fades by dawn, and the fee — spirit-coin, never jade — left upon the Bridge of Nine Candles. Key features: the Lantern Court itself, where lanterns are sold and lit; the Silent Registry, sealed records of every completed crossing, opened for no inquiry, including their own clients'; and the Bridge of Nine Candles, the Pavilion's toll-booth and only door. Code: one lantern, one life — a name already lit cannot be bought again, and the second bidder is refunded without explanation; no client is ever named; no child is ever ferried; a completed crossing is never spoken of. Hierarchy: Lantern-Lighter → Veiled Hand → Shadow Warden → Ferryman. The Pavilion borrows the Netherworld River's crossing-imagery — tolls, far shores, coins on the eyes — as pure metaphor, and answers to no cult: when the Ashen Bone Patriarch's envoys sought to buy the Court outright, their lanterns were returned unlit, the Pavilion's only recorded insult. Both great alliances quietly use it and loudly deny it. Atmosphere: incense and river-damp, lantern-glow on black water, prices quoted without greeting. Mortals say the Pavilion's lamps burn cold. Mortals say a great many things, which suits the Ferryman fine.
- #27Tian Dynasty
Keys: Hall of Ascending Peace, Academy of a Hundred Schools, Prince Tian Yang, Ministry of Rites, Office of Jade Proclamations, Grand Canal of Ten Thousand Flowers, Tian Imperial Palace, Sky-Piercing Capital, Tian Dynasty, Emperor Tian Zhao
TIAN DYNASTY — the mortal throne of the Central Heavenly Continent. For nearly two thousand years the Tian clan has ruled from the Tian Imperial Palace at Sky-Piercing Capital, an empire held together by ministries, census scrolls, marriage contracts, and garrison banners rather than by dao lineages. The founder — remembered only as the First Emperor, his personal name struck from every record at his own command — wrested the Mandate of the Central Continent from the Radiant Emperor in the War of the Two Emperors, a victory that cost half the continent's cultivation world. Every reign since has labored to prove the Mandate did not expire with him. The Mandate is maintained through ritual and paperwork alike: the Ministry of Rites performs the Grand Sacrifice of Ascending Heaven at each solstice, while the Office of Jade Proclamations carves imperial edicts on jade slips and distributes them by canal courier, turning the throne's will into law. Court life turns within the Hall of Ascending Peace, where ministers, eunuchs, and princely factions contend in silken silence; a slighted bow there has ended more careers than any battlefield. The Dynasty's reach is built on two institutions it does not merely possess but embodies. It charters the Academy of a Hundred Schools, keeping the philosophers who publicly debate the Mandate's meaning on the imperial payroll — a quiet leash on the sects' monopoly on truth. And the Grand Canal of Ten Thousand Flowers is the empire's artery: grain, salt, tribute, and legions all move on its water, and its tolls fill the treasuries that pay the armies garrisoning the heartland. The present reign belongs to the aged Emperor Tian Zhao, increasingly sealed away with the alchemists of the Pill Pavilion, whose longevity elixirs keep him breathing and the court in suspense — the Pavilion hungers for canal privileges, the Dynasty hungers for its Emperor's next breath, and neither can afford to break the bargain. Amid the suspense, Prince Tian Yang has made himself indispensable without ever being named heir: his marriages are policy, his force always measured, and his grip on the Office of Jade Proclamations so complete that no minister can say where the Emperor's will ends and Tian Yang's begins. To the Four Symbols Alliance the Dynasty extends wary courtesy and firm charters; the sects answer in kind, remembering that the War of the Two Emperors was won by mortals bearing Heaven Artifacts and mortal patience. A throne that has outlived its every rival for two millennia is not a thing a wise sect treats lightly.
- #28Intent, Domains & Dao Authorityselective
Keys: Law suppression, Killing Intent, Domain, Intent, Heavenly Domain, Sword Intent, Dao Authority, Law Domain, Dao World
INTENT is the first shadow cast by a cultivator's Dao. It is not emotion alone but conviction sharpened until Qi and environment respond. Sword Intent makes ordinary grass feel edged; Killing Intent makes prey experience the certainty of death; Alchemical Intent can stabilize a furnace without touch. Intent can appear before Dao Enlightenment, but immature Intent is influence rather than law. DOMAIN is Intent made territorial. High Soul Transformation cultivators may form incomplete pseudo-domains by saturating an area with soul and Qi. Dao Enlightenment cultivators form true LAW DOMAINS: reality inside the boundary favors their comprehended Law. Two experts of similar realm do not merely exchange attacks; their Domains collide, overwrite terrain, interfere with techniques, and expose differences in comprehension. Upper-Realm authority evolves further: Heaven Immortals possess HEAVENLY DOMAINS fed by ambient Immortal Qi; Golden Immortals anchor authority in a Dao Fruit; Dao Lords unfold a DAO WORLD; Dao Sovereigns possess recognized authority over a LAW-THREAD. DOMAIN COLLISION — Realm is the largest factor, comprehension the second. A smaller but purer Domain can resist a broader crude one. Compatible Laws may coexist or fuse; opposing Laws grind against each other. Losing a Domain collision can injure the Dao Heart, crack a Dao Fruit at immortal levels, or temporarily make one's signature techniques impossible to invoke. LAW IS NOT OMNIPOTENCE — A Fire cultivator does not automatically control every flame in existence. Authority is bounded by realm, comprehension, resistance, competing Laws, artifacts, formations, karma, and the local Heavenly Dao. This keeps high-level battles comprehensible and prevents 'I control X, therefore I instantly win' logic.
- #29Breakthrough Quality, Scars & Cultivation Debtselective
Keys: foundation quality, breakthrough, cultivation debt, bottleneck, Flawless Foundation, Dao scar, Heavenly Foundation, realm instability
Every breakthrough leaves architecture behind. Advancement obtained correctly creates stable power; advancement forced through pills, stolen essence, sacrificial arts, or repeated emergency breakthroughs creates CULTIVATION DEBT. FOUNDATION QUALITY — Cracked → Common → Refined → Flawless → Heavenly. Quality affects Qi purity, capacity, recovery, breakthrough stability, resistance to pressure, and how much power a later realm can safely express. It is difficult but not impossible to repair a poor Foundation; the cost rises drastically with every realm. DAO SCARS — Surviving does not mean escaping consequence. Failed tribulations, shattered Domains, soul attacks, forbidden techniques, broken oaths, and violent realm suppression can leave Dao Scars. A scar may cause a permanent weakness, recurring tribulation flaw, missing memory, elemental instability, shortened lifespan, or a technique that hurts its owner whenever invoked. CULTIVATION DEBT — Pills and treasures can accelerate cultivation, but excessive external power leaves impurities or comprehension gaps. A cultivator who races from Early to Peak through resources alone may possess the reservoir of Peak while having the control of Middle. Before the next major realm, debt must be repaid through seclusion, combat tempering, enlightenment, purification, karmic settlement, or rare treasures. FALSE BREAKTHROUGH — Some forbidden methods temporarily imitate the pressure and output of the next realm by burning lifespan, bloodline, souls, Golden Core, Nascent Soul, or future potential. This is excellent for desperate villains and last stands because the price is concrete. When the borrowed realm ends, cultivation may collapse permanently. This system prevents effortless pill-spamming and makes injuries, rushed advancement, and desperate power-ups produce long-term story hooks rather than disappearing after a scene.
- #30Combat Logic: Suppression, Counters & Survivalselective
Keys: combat logic, life-saving treasure, counter, realm suppression, protective treasure, escape, spiritual pressure, battle
Cultivation combat is asymmetric. Most encounters are decided by information, preparation, compatibility, and whether one side can force the other to fight on its terms. SPIRITUAL PRESSURE — Higher realms naturally radiate pressure. Deliberately released pressure can freeze muscles, disrupt circulation, force weaker cultivators to kneel, crack floors, frighten beasts, and expose disguised cultivation. Pressure is not an automatic kill against every weaker target: formations, protective treasures, bloodlines, strong Dao Hearts, and another expert's protection can resist it. COUNTERS — Elements and Daos create tendencies, not simplistic rock-paper-scissors. Water may suppress ordinary Fire, yet sufficiently pure Heavenly Flame can vaporize Water arts. Space can evade Sword Qi until Sword Intent learns to sever space. Soul techniques bypass physical toughness but are dangerous against specialized soul defenses. The quality and comprehension behind a technique matter as much as its label. SURVIVAL TOOLS — Cultivators carry trump cards because direct fairness is foolish: defensive talismans, substitute puppets, blood-escape arts, Void-Breaking Talismans, sealed ancestor strikes, formation plates, sacrificial artifacts, poison, hostages, karmic oaths, and terrain prepared years in advance. A weaker cultivator surviving a superior expert should usually spend or reveal something significant. KILL CONFIRMATION — At Core Formation and above, destroying the visible body may not be enough. Golden Cores can be hidden or detonated; Nascent Souls can flee; Soul Transformation experts can leave soul marks; immortals possess increasingly sophisticated recovery anchors. Experienced killers seal space, destroy soul and body, inspect karma, and prevent reincarnation before declaring an enemy dead. COLLATERAL — High-realm experts restrain themselves near sects and cities not from kindness but because unrestricted combat destroys resources, disciples, formations, karmic standing, and territory. Great factions enforce deterrence: 'You can kill our elder; can you survive our ancestor?'
- #31Tribulations: Breakthrough Phenomena, Ascension & Dao Tribulationselective
Keys: Dao Tribulation, Lightning Tribulation, tribulation, Heavenly Tribulation, Heart Demon Tribulation, Karmic Tribulation, Ascension Tribulation
A TRIBULATION is a cosmic examination imposed when a transformation meaningfully changes what a being is, challenges an established Law, carries exceptional karmic weight, or attempts to cross a boundary the Heavenly Dao actively enforces. It is distinct from ordinary breakthrough phenomena, Qi instability and Heart Demons. LOWER-REALM RULE — Body Tempering → Qi Condensation → Foundation Establishment → Core Formation → Nascent Soul → Soul Transformation → Dao Enlightenment do not each carry a mandatory Heavenly Tribulation. A normal Foundation Establishment breakthrough, including a Heavenly-quality Foundation, is tribulation-free unless some separate abnormal cause specifically provokes one. Breakthroughs may still produce pressure, visions, environmental Qi changes, instability, backlash or Heart Demons. ASCENSION TRIBULATION — Peak Dao Enlightenment → Ascension is Canglan's first universal unavoidable Heavenly Tribulation. It tests whether mortal body, Qi, soul and Law can be reforged to tolerate Immortal Qi while forcing passage through the broken Gate of Tianzhu. UPPER-REALM TRIBULATIONS — Tianzhu does not automatically throw lightning at every immortal realm either. True tribulations become appropriate at profound transformations of existence or authority, especially the formation or radical transformation of a Dao Fruit, Dao World, complete Law-Thread, attempts to transcend Heavenly Law, or similarly world-defying changes. Catastrophic Dao Tribulations at Golden Immortal scale or above belong to this upper-end category rather than establishing a tribulation at every realm. POSSIBLE FORMS — Lightning, Heart-Demon, Karmic, Elemental, Soul and Dao Tribulations may occur when relevant. Exceptional tribulations can arrive in three, six or nine waves, manifest Law-beasts, phantom armies, ancestral consequences or contradictions in the cultivator's Dao. ESCALATION — Forbidden techniques, stolen cultivation, severe karmic entanglement, abnormal physiques, exposed world-defying treasures, attempts to cheat a genuine tribulation, and transformations beyond the cultivator's stable comprehension can intensify a tribulation that is actually due. Concealing oneself from spectators is not the same as deceiving Heaven. REWARD — Surviving a genuine tribulation can refine flesh, Qi, soul and Dao comprehension or leave Dao Marks. This benefit does not turn tribulations into routine farming opportunities.
- #32Techniques, Scriptures & Masteryselective
Keys: mastery, comprehension, inheritance technique, secret art, forbidden art, cultivation manual, Dao Scripture, scripture, proficiency, technique, martial art
A cultivation manual is knowledge, not instant power. Obtaining a supreme Scripture gives a path to greatness; it does not grant comprehension, physical conditioning, Dao insight, or the realm required to express its highest chapters. TECHNIQUE GRADES — Mortal → Earth → Heaven → Divine → Immortal → Dao. Each grade may have Low/Mid/High/Peak subgrades. 'Spirit' is used colloquially by some regions for exceptional Mortal-grade or low Earth-grade arts, but is not a universal formal tier. Each grade may be Low/Mid/High/Peak. Grade describes the ceiling and sophistication of the art, not the current user's output. A Qi Condensation cultivator holding a Divine Scripture is still Qi Condensation; attempting chapters beyond their capacity can rupture meridians, damage the soul, attract tribulation, or simply fail. MASTERY — Initial Understanding → Small Success → Great Success → Perfection → Transcendence. Initial Understanding reproduces the form. Small Success makes it battle-reliable. Great Success allows variation. Perfection removes waste and exposes the technique's underlying principle. Transcendence means the cultivator has understood the principle deeply enough to alter, combine, or eventually create techniques of their own. TECHNIQUE TYPES — Cultivation Methods determine how Qi/Immortal Essence is gathered and refined. Combat Arts convert power into attacks or defense. Movement Arts govern speed, flight, void-step and escape. Soul Arts target or protect consciousness. Body Arts temper flesh. Secret Arts trade something for temporary advantage. Auxiliary arts include alchemy, formations, refining, divination, beast taming and healing. COMPATIBILITY — A technique can conflict with physique, spiritual root, bloodline, existing cultivation method, Dao, or another technique. Changing one's core cultivation method after Foundation Establishment is dangerous; after Golden Core it can require breaking and reforging cultivation. The greatest inheritances therefore seek compatible successors rather than merely strong ones. CREATION — At high mastery, experts stop collecting techniques and begin writing them. Dao Enlightenment cultivators may create Heaven/Divine arts from their Law. Immortals encode Law into Immortal arts. Golden Immortals and above can leave Scriptures that contain experiential Dao impressions. Reading such a Scripture may feel like standing inside the creator's memory, but the reader must still comprehend it personally. LOST CHAPTERS — Ancient Scriptures are often incomplete. Missing chapters, deliberately false transitions, sealed final moves, incompatible annotations, and rival interpretations create adventures. A 'complete' auction-house copy may be a reconstruction rather than the founder's original. FORBIDDEN ARTS — Forbidden does not automatically mean evil. The label means the price is unacceptable to orthodox practice: lifespan, fertility, memories, bloodline purity, cultivation foundation, karma, souls, future breakthroughs, or permanent Dao Scars. Demonic arts often externalize the price onto victims; desperate righteous experts may pay it themselves. INHERITANCE RULE — Finding a powerful inheritance creates opportunity, enemies, obligations and training arcs. It must never automatically skip realm requirements or mastery progression.
- #33Immortal Economy, Resources & Upper-Realm Wealthselective
Keys: Dao Nectar, Tianzhu economy, Dao Crystal, Immortal Stones, Immortal Crystal, Upper Realm economy, Immortal Stone, Immortal Vein, Registry Merit, immortal resource, Heavenly Medicine
Mortal Spirit Stones remain useful to Lower-Realm cultivators but become trivial currency in Tianzhu. Upper-Realm wealth is measured by resources that contain Immortal Qi, Law, time, territory, and access. CURRENCY LADDER — Spirit Stones remain Low/Mid/High/Peak at 100:1. Above them are Immortal Stones: Low → Mid → High → Peak, also commonly exchanged at roughly 100:1 where markets are stable. One Low Immortal Stone contains energy vastly beyond a Peak Spirit Stone and is dangerous for unprepared mortals to absorb directly. At the highest markets, wealth is denominated in Dao Crystals, condensed fragments of Law that cannot be given a universal exchange rate because affinity and purity matter more than quantity. IMMORTAL VEINS — The true basis of Tianzhu's economy. Floating continents, sects and Heavenborn estates are built around Immortal Veins. Ownership determines how many immortals a faction can sustain. Wars presented as disputes over honor frequently conceal a struggle for veins, ascension pools, medicine worlds, mines, or spatial routes. ASCENSION POOLS — Newly Ascended cultivators benefit enormously from pools that wash away residual mortal Qi and accelerate formation of an Immortal Foundation. The Empyrean Registry and great houses control most public pools. Sponsorship therefore creates immediate political debt. HEAVENLY MEDICINES — Upper-Realm herbs may require centuries or kalpas to mature. Examples include Star-Marrow Fruit, Nine-Heavens Lotus, Voidroot, Phoenix Nirvana Petal and Law-Bearing Tea. At high levels, age alone is insufficient: a medicine is valuable because of the Law environment in which it matured. DAO CRYSTALS — Crystallized Law comprehension produced naturally in rare cosmic phenomena or left after the death of powerful beings. Fire Dao Crystal, Space Dao Crystal, Sword Dao Crystal and similar varieties accelerate comprehension but can contaminate a cultivator's path with another being's interpretation. TIME RESOURCES — Time Chambers, Samsara Dreams, memory inheritances and accelerated pocket worlds are among Tianzhu's most expensive assets. They accelerate practice but cannot manufacture genuine enlightenment indefinitely; comprehension bottlenecks remain. MERIT & STATUS — Registry Merit, sect contribution, military achievements and favors from great houses function as currencies alongside stones. Certain things cannot legally be purchased with wealth: entry to sealed Dao lands, audience with a Golden Immortal, a place in an Ascension Pool, access to forbidden archives, or permission to cross a controlled spatial gate. WEALTH SCALE — Lower immortals count stones. Great sects count veins. Golden Immortals count worlds, inheritances and favors. Dao Lords bargain with territories, Law resources, oaths and epochs of service. BLACK MARKETS — Smugglers trade stolen Dao Crystals, identity seals, forbidden scriptures, unregistered ascenders, corpse resources, tribulation lightning, bloodlines and coordinates to newly born Secret Realms. The Unseen Tower knows prices; the Netherworld Pavilion knows who will kill for them.
- #34Heavenly Rankings, Mandates & Public Reputationselective
Keys: Dao Fruit Ranking, Prodigy Ranking, Heavenly Ranking, Heaven Ranking, Mandate, Empyrean Registry, Heavenly List, ranking tablet, Bounty Ranking, Earth Ranking, Dragon Ranking, Treasure Ranking
Cultivation society obsessively measures status, but rankings are institutions rather than omniscient game UI. Lists are compiled through witnessed battles, divination, sect reports, Registry records, artifact resonance and intelligence networks. Rankings can be wrong, manipulated, outdated, or deliberately concealed. LOWER-REALM LISTS — Sects, cities, merchant organizations and information brokers publish many overlapping rankings of younger talents, established experts, craftspeople and specialists. Famous lists can shape reputation and invitations, but no single list is universally authoritative. Regional rankings are often biased by politics, incomplete information and sponsorship. RANK IS NOT A POWER LEVEL — Placement reflects documented achievement, reputation and available intelligence. Unknown hidden masters may be absent. A lower-ranked cultivator may defeat a higher-ranked one because of recent breakthroughs, counters, concealed trump cards or false information. Defeating a ranked expert publicly can cause rapid movement; claiming victory without witnesses invites ridicule. TIANZHU — The Empyrean Registry maintains far more consequential records: Ascender Rolls, Immortal Merit Lists, Marchland War Rankings, wanted lists, registered Dao Fruits and recognized titles. Great Heavenborn houses sponsor private rankings of heirs and sworn blades. The Registry's recognition can determine access to territory, Ascension Pools, spatial gates and legal protection. DAO FRUIT RECORD — Golden Immortals may voluntarily register the nature of their Dao Fruit. Public registration grants prestige and certain protections but reveals information to enemies. Ancient monsters often refuse registration entirely. HEAVENLY MANDATE — Mandate is accumulated legitimacy recognized by people, institutions, karma and sometimes Heaven itself. Dynasties claim political Mandate; sect founders can establish doctrinal Mandates; exceptional cultivators may gather the 'momentum of an age.' Mandate is not mind control or guaranteed destiny. It makes followers, opportunities and symbolic authority gather more easily around a figure while making their failures correspondingly catastrophic. TITLES — Major deeds generate epithets: Azure Sword Saint, Blood-River Demon, Pill Emperor, Uncrowned Saber King, Calamity Maiden. A title becomes metaphysically meaningful only after sufficient reputation, karma and collective recognition accumulate around it. At high cultivation, speaking a true title during an oath, challenge or ritual may carry measurable weight. BOUNTIES — Righteous sects, dynasties, demonic factions, merchant powers, the Netherworld Pavilion and Tianzhu authorities all issue bounties. A bounty communicates both reward and political permission: killing a protected heir may be physically easy but socially suicidal, while a sanctioned bounty strips away some consequences. RANKING EVENTS — Dragon Gate Assembly, sect tournaments, inheritance trials, alchemy conferences, formation contests and Marchland wars provide natural public stages. They generate alliances, grudges, recruitment, political marriages, assassination attempts, sponsorships and face-slapping without requiring coincidence. INFORMATION LAG — News travels. A cultivator can break through in secret and remain officially ranked at their old strength. This is desirable: the world should react to what it knows, not invisible character sheets.
- #35Physiques, Bloodlines & Inherited Potentialselective
Keys: bloodline purity, Physique, bloodline, Innate Dao Body, ancestral blood, Bloodline Awakening, Nine Orifices Exquisite Body, physique rank
SPIRITUAL ROOT, PHYSIQUE, AND BLOODLINE ARE DISTINCT. A Spiritual Root governs how the soul filters Qi. A Physique is an abnormal architecture of body/soul that grants innate properties. A Bloodline is inherited ancestral authority carried through lineage. A cultivator may possess any combination; excellence in one does not guarantee excellence in the others. PHYSIQUES — Ranked broadly from Uncommon through Rare, Ancient, Saint, Divine and Mythical, while Canglan's traditional registries also number famous physiques from Rank 20 upward toward Rank 1. Physiques grant advantages but impose needs and flaws. A Pure Yang body may cultivate fire rapidly yet suffer dangerous Yang excess; a Nine Yin constitution may attract cold Qi and Yin entities; an Innate Dao Body may comprehend principles unnaturally quickly but draw disproportionate Heavenly attention. Physiques can awaken in stages rather than arriving fully active. BLOODLINES — Descendants of ancient cultivators, spirit beasts, divine creatures or strange races may inherit diluted fragments of ancestral power. Bloodline purity determines access, not cultivation realm. Awakening may grant memories, instincts, transformations, affinities or an ancestral ability. Strong bloodlines can suppress related weaker bloodlines, but never automatically suppress unrelated cultivators. DILUTION & REVERSION — Bloodlines normally dilute across generations. Rare descendants experience Ancestral Reversion, unexpectedly expressing an ancient trait at high purity. Great clans therefore obsess over genealogy, marriages and bloodline testing. Artificial purification exists but risks mutation, ancestral possession or rejection. THEFT — Blood essence can be transplanted, refined or devoured, but stolen bloodlines resist foreign bodies. Successful theft may leave conflicting instincts, karmic inheritance, physical mutation or an ancestral will inside the thief. Bloodline theft is taboo partly because it works. SYNERGY — Root controls intake; meridians control circulation; technique controls refinement; physique modifies the vessel; bloodline supplies inherited authority; Dao determines what the cultivator ultimately becomes. None replaces the others.
- #36Personal Dao, Dao Heart & Philosophical Divergenceselective
Keys: Dao contradiction, Principle, Intent, Sword Dao, Personal Dao, Heart Demon, Law, Dao Path, Dao Heart
A DAO is not merely an element or weapon category. 'Sword Dao' names a family of paths, not a single truth. Two sword cultivators can reach opposite conclusions and both be genuine: one understands the sword as Severance, another as Protection, another as Absolute Precision, another as Freedom. DAO DEVELOPMENT — Affinity → Concept → Intent → Principle → Law → Domain → Dao Fruit → Dao World → Law-Thread. Cultivators can imitate techniques before understanding their principle, but higher advancement increasingly demands a personal answer to WHY their path works. DAO HEART — The Dao Heart is the cultivator's stable internal conviction: the set of truths by which they interpret cultivation and themselves. It need not be moral. A merciful healer and remorseless demon may both possess unbreakable Dao Hearts if their actions and beliefs remain internally coherent. CONTRADICTION — Acting against one's Dao is not punished because Heaven enforces morality. It is dangerous because cultivation built upon a principle becomes unstable when its owner ceases to believe it. Minor hypocrisy causes hesitation. Deep contradiction can weaken Intent, fracture a Domain, create Heart Demons, stall breakthroughs or crack a Dao Fruit. EVOLUTION — A Dao may change through genuine enlightenment. This is not contradiction if the cultivator reconciles the old truth with the new. Such transformations are rare and often triggered by grief, defeat, love, betrayal, mortality or witnessing something their old worldview cannot explain. DAO DEBATE — At high realms, conversation itself can be combat. Two masters may debate principles while their Intent manifests around them. Losing a debate does not magically erase cultivation, but realizing that one's foundational understanding is incomplete can trigger enlightenment—or a catastrophic crisis of Dao Heart.
- #37Karma, Fate, Providence & Fortuneselective
Keys: luck, Providence, Providence Plundering, Heavenly Dao ledger, Fate, fortune, Karma, Son of Heaven, karmic debt
KARMA, FATE AND PROVIDENCE ARE RELATED BUT NOT IDENTICAL. KARMA is consequence and connection: debts, favors, murders, vows, lineages, mentorship, stolen opportunities and unresolved grievances create karmic threads. Karma is not a morality score. Saving a tyrant creates connection; murdering a saint creates connection. The Heavenly Dao records consequence more readily than virtue. FATE is structural tendency: the paths most likely to arise from birth, choices, relationships and existing karmic threads. Fate can be divined imperfectly but changes when causes change. No prophecy is absolute unless backed by overwhelming Law. PROVIDENCE is momentum of opportunity—the degree to which useful coincidences, inheritances, mentors, escapes and historical currents tend to converge around someone. Great prodigies, dynasties and era-defining figures may accumulate Providence. It does not guarantee victory and can be exhausted. FORTUITOUS ENCOUNTERS require compatibility. Providence may lead someone to a sealed cave, but they can still fail its trial, arrive too weak, misunderstand the inheritance or lose it to another person. PLUNDERING — Forbidden arts can steal portions of another's Providence by taking their destined opportunities, identity, bloodline, karmic position or life. Providence Plundering produces severe entanglement: the thief inherits enemies, unfinished karma and portions of the victim's fate alongside the benefit. BACKLASH — Manipulating fate creates new causes rather than 'angering luck.' The more aggressively someone rewrites causal relationships, the more contradictions must eventually resolve through Karmic Tribulation, enemies, debts or unforeseen consequences. THE NINE TREASURES — The Karmic Loom is not a separate karma system. It is a primordial shortcut into these same causal threads and the Heavenly Dao's ledger, allowing manipulation at a scale ordinary cultivators cannot approach.
- #38Oaths, Contracts, True Names & Bindingselective
Keys: contract, Dao Companion vow, beast contract, blood oath, True Name, slave seal, Dao Oath, soul contract, Heavenly Oath
WORDS can become cultivation mechanisms when backed by Qi, soul, karma, Law or a recognized witness. HEAVENLY OATH — The speaker voluntarily places a stated condition into the Heavenly Dao's karmic ledger. Breach triggers backlash proportional to the oath's clarity, stakes and cultivation. Heaven enforces the wording, not the speaker's intended loophole; clever wording is therefore a dangerous profession. DAO OATH — Bound to the cultivator's Dao Heart rather than external morality. Breaking it destabilizes comprehension, making it especially dangerous for high-realm cultivators. SOUL CONTRACT — Directly inscribed into participating souls. Reliable but invasive. Poorly designed contracts can be removed by superior soul experts; powerful contracts include mutual destruction clauses, silence seals and distance-independent warnings. BLOOD & CLAN OATHS — Use lineage as collateral. Ancient clans employ them sparingly because one ancestor's oath can burden descendants. BEAST CONTRACTS — Range from equal companion covenants to coercive master seals. Intelligent spirit beasts remember coercion even when magically compelled. TRUE NAMES — A True Name is not necessarily a birth name. It is the identity-pattern by which soul, karma and Dao recognize a being. Ordinary cultivators do not possess usable True Names in a mystical sense; they crystallize through exceptional cultivation, titles, reincarnation continuity or deliberate rites. Knowing one can strengthen divination, summoning, sealing and oaths, but does not grant automatic control. LIMIT — No contract casually binds someone vastly stronger unless they consent, are incapacitated, or the contract is backed by equivalent authority. This prevents cheap wording tricks from replacing cultivation.
- #39Death, Souls, Samsara & Reincarnationselective
Keys: soul fragment, death, soul lamp, Ghost City of Fengdu, reincarnation, resurrection, Netherworld, River of Forgetfulness, possession, Samsara
DEATH is a process. When body and cultivation anchors fail, the soul separates and is gradually drawn toward the Netherworld current. Ordinary souls lose cohesion quickly; cultivators endure longer according to soul strength. THE NETHERWORLD — Ghost City of Fengdu stands near one of Canglan's great intersections with the unseen death-current. It is not the entirety of the afterlife but a city built where living cultivators can interact with ghosts, soul merchants and underworld phenomena. SAMSARA — Unanchored souls are eventually carried through karmic settling and the River of Forgetfulness before reincarnation. Memories normally dissolve; karmic tendencies and deep soul impressions may remain. Reincarnation is therefore continuity without guaranteed personality continuity. ESCAPES — Nascent Soul and stronger cultivators can resist the pull temporarily. Methods include possession, prepared reincarnation vessels, soul jars, ancestral tablets, ghost cultivation and hidden soul-seeds. Each carries risk. Possession can fail if the vessel rejects the invader; reincarnation may lose memories; ghost cultivation gradually changes emotional experience. SOUL LAMPS — Great factions maintain lamps linked to disciples and elders. Extinguishing proves a life-anchor has broken but does not always prove total soul annihilation. Sudden lamp failure triggers investigation. RESURRECTION — Restoring a recently separated soul to a viable body is possible under exceptional conditions. True resurrection after Samsara has begun is exponentially harder because identity has dispersed into karmic process. The longer the death, the more extraordinary the price. TRUE DEATH — Destruction of body, soul, recovery anchors and reincarnation imprint is called Soul Extinguishment. Techniques capable of reliably doing this are feared and often forbidden. THE SILENT NETHER COFFIN — The primordial Treasure of Death interacts with this same system at a cosmic level; it does not create a separate afterlife.
- #40Sect Life, Contribution & Institutional Politicsselective
Keys: inner disciple, core disciple, Punishment Hall, Inheritance Peak, sect contribution, sect succession, sect mission, personal disciple, Contribution Hall, Mission Hall
A SECT is a philosophical/religious lineage, military organization, educational institution, government, economic cartel and extended social family at once—not a modern school with swords. It can inspire real camaraderie and pride while containing ambition, patronage, nepotism, corruption and ruthless resource competition. DISCIPLE STATUS — Servant/Registered Disciple → Outer Disciple → Inner Disciple → Core Disciple → Personal Disciple/True Inheritor. Status is not identical to realm. Advancement depends on cultivation, contribution, aptitude, patronage, conduct, lineage and factional politics. Good caves, pills, manuals, missions, inheritances, mines and advancement opportunities are finite; official merit decides some allocations, backing and influence decide others. CONTRIBUTION — Missions, gathering, patrols, teaching, discoveries, military service and donations earn Contribution Points redeemable for manuals, pills, cave residences, artifact access, healing and training grounds. Rare inheritances require merit plus approval. Records matter, but recommendations, introductions, gifts and favors can shape which opportunity reaches a disciple in the first place. HALLS — Mission Hall assigns work; Contribution Hall records merit; Punishment Hall investigates crimes; Scripture Pavilion guards manuals; Medicine Hall heals; Artifact Hall maintains weapons; External Affairs handles clans and vassals; Inheritance Peaks preserve competing lineages. Enforcement is practical rather than perfectly impartial: status, evidence, witnesses, factional cost and who demands action all matter. MASTER-DISCIPLE LINEAGES — Accepting a personal disciple resembles adoption into a cultivation lineage more than an ordinary teacher-student relationship. Masters provide teaching, resources and political shelter; disciples owe respect, extend the master's legacy and affect the master's reputation. Harm or disgrace to one can become a lineage issue without requiring the whole sect to react irrationally. Affection, obligation, ambition and control may coexist. INTERNAL FACTIONS — Elders, lineages and families compete over resources, succession, doctrine and alliances. Rival peaks may despise one another while defending the sect against outsiders. A Sect Master governs by balancing elders, ancestors, resources and legitimacy—not by issuing unlimited commands. VASSALS — Great sects protect mortal kingdoms, cultivation clans, mines and lesser sects in exchange for taxes, recruits, labor, intelligence and military support. Protection can be genuine while remaining extractive. SUCCESSION — Leadership rarely passes solely to the strongest fighter. Candidates need elder support, administrative competence, inheritance legitimacy, allies and the ability to prevent schism. Merit matters inside society, not outside it.
- #41Grand Heavenly Treasure Boundary Rulesselective
Keys: Treasure bearer, Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures, Grand Heavenly Treasure, primordial Treasure, Heavenly Scripture
The Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures and their paired Heavenly Scriptures are primordial cosmic constants within this lorebook. They are primordial cosmic constants, NOT ordinary Divine/Immortal/Dao artifacts and NOT routine loot. BOUNDARY — No Grand Heavenly Treasure has been credibly confirmed in Canglan during recorded history. Lower-Realm characters cannot identify one from general knowledge. At most, the oldest archives contain corrupted myths and scripture echoes. POWER — A Treasure may let a compatible bearer act far above their realm in its specific domain, but it does not automatically grant the bearer cultivation, mastery, durability, perception or comprehension equal to the Treasure. Access should unfold through compatibility, bonding, Scripture comprehension and survivable output. COSMIC RESISTANCE — 'Absolute' descriptions in Treasure legends express primordial authority, not license for consequence-free omnipotence. Peer primordial Treasures, comparable Law authority, bearer limitations, incomplete bonding and cosmic-scale seals can create meaningful resistance. STORY USE — A confirmed Treasure appearance is a setting-changing event. Upper-Realm houses, ancient entities and high-level diviners may react once evidence plausibly reaches them; they do not psychically know the instant {{user}} or an NPC encounters one. CANON — Preserve the Nine Treasures' established identities and domains. Do not casually invent a tenth Treasure or promote an ordinary artifact into one.
- #42Tianzhu: Geography of the Empyrean Dominionselective
Keys: Cloud Sea, Tianzhu, Empyrean Dominion, Marchlands, Tianzhu map, floating continent, Tianzhu geography, Nine Heavens, Upper Realm geography
Tianzhu is not a single continent but an immense Upper-Realm dominion of floating continents, star-islands, cloud seas, spatial corridors and pocket heavens suspended around the fractured celestial axis once connected to Canglan. Distances are measured as much by stable routes as by physical separation; two neighboring continents may require weeks of travel while a registered Heavenroad crosses a thousand times that distance in an hour. THE NINE HEAVENS are administrative-cosmological regions, not literal stacked floors. Each contains countless territories. The LOWER THREE HEAVENS border the Ascension Marchlands and contain frontier sects, migrant cities, military states and newly stabilized continents. The MIDDLE THREE HEAVENS hold most old immortal sects, trade routes, academies and Heavenborn estates. The UPPER THREE HEAVENS are dominated by ancient houses, Dao Lord territories, sealed ancestral lands and places where ordinary immortals require permission merely to enter. THE ASCENSION MARCHLANDS surround the unstable exits of the broken Gate. New climbers usually emerge here. Geography shifts after spatial storms; ruins from Heavenfall periodically surface and vanish. Registry fortresses, recruitment cities, scavenger sects and predatory factions cluster around known arrival zones. THE CLOUD SEA fills much of the apparent emptiness between continents. It contains Immortal Qi currents, storms, void beasts, wandering islands and ancient wreckage. Ordinary flight across it is suicidal over long distances. HEAVENROADS are stabilized spatial routes maintained by formations and Registry beacons. Control of a Heavenroad creates toll income and strategic power. Destroying one can isolate a territory for decades. DAO TERRITORIES form around powerful long-lived cultivators. A Dao Lord's residence may gradually alter local physics: sword-shaped rain, rivers flowing upward, permanent twilight, dreams becoming visible, or plants that inherit fragments of Law. Geography in Tianzhu is therefore partly political. NO COMPLETE MAP exists. Ancient wars, moving continents, hidden worlds and spatial tides make every atlas provisional.
- #43The Empyrean Registry: Law, Rank & Ascender Administrationselective
Keys: Ascender Roll, Empyrean Registry, Ascension Pool, Immortal law, Registry Merit, Tianzhu law, Registry, Registry Seal
The EMPYREAN REGISTRY is Tianzhu's closest equivalent to a trans-heaven government, though it is neither omnipotent nor universally obeyed. It maintains Heavenroads, records recognized territories, administers major Ascension Pools, certifies certain titles, arbitrates disputes that threaten shared infrastructure and tracks dangerous entities. ASCENDER INTAKE — Climbers emerging from the broken Gate are identified, medically stabilized if possible, tested for realm and contamination, and entered into an Ascender Roll. Registration is strongly incentivized rather than universally compulsory: registered climbers gain lawful identity, basic route access and eligibility for public Ascension Pools; unregistered immortals exist but are vulnerable to exploitation. THE CENTURY OF PROBATION is an old convention applied unevenly across Marchlands. During roughly the first century after Ascension, a climber's sponsor or local Registry office may be responsible for major legal violations. This is why houses sponsor only promising or controllable ascenders. REGISTRY SEALS function as identity, travel credential, merit record and contract interface. They cannot perfectly reveal hidden cultivation or cosmic secrets. JURISDICTION — The Registry aggressively protects Heavenroads, public Ascension facilities, inter-heaven treaties and recognized neutral markets. It intervenes far less reliably in private sect wars, inheritance disputes and remote territories. ENFORCEMENT scales with importance. Inspectors handle ordinary disputes; Heaven Marshals pursue major criminals; Tribunal Envoys investigate crimes involving great factions; truly catastrophic threats require coalitions because the Registry cannot casually command Dao Lords. CORRUPTION exists. Offices can be bribed, captured by local interests or manipulated by Heavenborn blocs. Forging a Registry Seal is difficult, lucrative and severely punished. POLITICAL ROLE — Every great faction publicly praises neutral Registry order while privately attempting to place allies inside it. Its strength comes from making trade and travel possible, not from being stronger than every faction combined.
- #44Climbers & Heavenborn: Upper-Realm Social Orderselective
Keys: Ascended mortal, Lower Realm ascender, climber, Tianzhu society, Ascender prejudice, Heavenborn, native immortal
Tianzhu's central social divide is not simply rich versus poor but HEAVENBORN versus CLIMBER. HEAVENBORN are born under complete Upper-Realm Laws amid Immortal Qi. Powerful families can provide spirit medicines, tutors and body-tempering resources from childhood. This produces extraordinary average foundations but also generations who have never experienced true scarcity. CLIMBERS are beings who reached Canglan's mortal ceiling and survived Ascension. Even a newly arrived climber has accomplished something most Heavenborn never need to attempt. Their techniques may be provincial and their resources laughable, but their Dao Hearts, improvisation and survival instincts earn wary respect. PREJUDICE — Some Heavenborn call climbers Mudborn, Dustborn or Gate-Strays. Others romanticize them as hardened geniuses. Neither stereotype is universally true. SPONSORSHIP — Houses and sects compete for exceptional climbers. A sponsorship can include an Ascension Pool, residence, legal identity, Immortal Stones and a technique conversion. In return the climber may owe military service, marriage consideration, apprenticeship, oaths or a fixed term of allegiance. CULTURE SHOCK — In Canglan a Dao Enlightenment ancestor may command nations. In Tianzhu that same person may need directions from an Immortal Foundation clerk. The psychological transition is often harder than the physical Ascension. CLIMBER NETWORKS — Ascenders form mutual-aid halls based on home realm, generation, profession or arrival cohort. Older climbers sometimes protect newcomers specifically because Heavenborn institutions did not protect them. SECOND GENERATION — Children of climbers born in Tianzhu are legally Heavenborn in many jurisdictions but culturally occupy an ambiguous position, producing families that bridge both worlds.
- #45Major Heavenborn Houses of Tianzhuselective
Keys: House Luo, Tianzhu houses, House Cang, House Yan, Heavenborn house, House Ji, Five Great Houses, House Shen
Among thousands of immortal lineages, five Heavenborn houses exert unusual influence across the Middle and Upper Heavens. They are rivals, not a unified council. HOUSE JI — Masters of spatial commerce, Heavenroads and void formations. Their wealth comes from moving people and goods. Publicly precise and contractual; privately obsessed with mapping the Heavenfall fractures. Their ancestral doctrine teaches that distance is a tax imposed by ignorance. HOUSE LUO — An old martial lineage associated with spear, thunder and military service. Luo heirs dominate several Marchland armies and Registry marshal offices. They value visible achievement and consider hidden strength politically useless until demonstrated. HOUSE SHEN — Physicians, soul-healers and longevity researchers controlling several famous Ascension Pools. Their charitable reputation is genuine but strategically useful. The deepest family vaults are rumored to contain medical records stretching back before Heavenfall. HOUSE YAN — Refiners, furnace-lords and owners of star-metal foundries. Yan artifacts equip sects that publicly denounce Yan politics. Their internal succession is decided partly by creating a masterpiece rather than solely through combat. HOUSE CANG — The most controversial ancient lineage, claiming descent from inhabitants of primordial Cang before the Sundering. They possess incomplete Lower-Realm records no one else has seen and refuse to explain how. Other houses accuse them of manufacturing antiquity; the Cang answer by producing relics that should not exist. BALANCE — No house possesses a Grand Heavenly Treasure as confirmed canon. Rumors may claim otherwise. Each house contains internal factions, decent people, monsters, incompetents and reformers; surnames are not personalities. MARRIAGE — Political marriages exchange bloodlines, routes, territory and obligations. Refusal can insult a faction but cannot automatically override individual power or existing oaths.
- #46Immortal Sects & Great Powers of Tianzhuselective
Keys: Tianzhu sect, Ten Thousand Furnace Palace, Samsara Monastery, immortal sect, Myriad Scripture Academy, Celestial Sword Court, Starfall Pavilion
Tianzhu's sects differ from Heavenborn houses by claiming legitimacy through doctrine and inheritance rather than ancestry. CELESTIAL SWORD COURT — A vast coalition of sword lineages rather than one school. Disputes are settled through formal Sword Questions: witnessed contests of technique, Intent or philosophy. The Court collects records of unusual Sword Daos and has a particular interest in climbers from Canglan's Azure lineage. MYRIAD SCRIPTURE ACADEMY — Scholar-cultivators, translators and archaeologists. It purchases incomplete manuals others dismiss and maintains dangerous comparative archives. Academy scholars believe every cultivation system contains evidence about the universe that created it. TEN THOUSAND FURNACE PALACE — Tianzhu's greatest independent refining institution, part guild and part sect. Its furnaces are rented to powers that would otherwise be enemies. Neutrality is enforced because everyone needs the Palace. SAMSARA MONASTERY — A controversial order studying death, reincarnation and karmic continuity. Its monks mediate ghost disasters and recover soul fragments, while critics accuse its elders of remembering too many previous lives. STARFALL PAVILION — Astronomers, diviners and explorers who chart moving continents, Secret Realms and void storms. Their predictions are probabilistic rather than infallible. They maintain the most respected public atlas of the Nine Heavens. LESSER POWERS are innumerable: beast clans, merchant leagues, wandering immortal families, demonic courts, free cities, military orders and solitary Dao territories. Do not make every Tianzhu conflict revolve around these five named sects.
- #47Upper-Realm Economy, Trade & Everyday Immortal Lifeselective
Keys: immortal city, Tianzhu market, Cloudship, Tianzhu daily life, immortal market, Heavenroad toll, Upper Realm trade
Immortality does not abolish logistics. Tianzhu's civilization exists because someone mines star-metal, tends medicine fields, repairs formations, maps routes, transports goods and prevents void beasts from eating merchants. CITIES — Major immortal cities are built around Immortal Veins, Heavenroad junctions, Ascension Pools, great sect gates or ancient formations. A city may contain millions of ordinary descendants, low cultivators, spirit races and immortals while being governed by only a few truly powerful beings. TRANSPORT — Cloudships handle bulk cargo; flying artifacts serve individuals; Heavenroads move high-value traffic; long-distance spatial gates are expensive and regulated. Teleportation powerful enough to ignore infrastructure exists at high realms but does not move entire economies cheaply. MARKETS — Low immortals purchase pills, cultivation rooms, maps, talismans, beast materials and technique consultations. Great powers trade mining rights, medicine worlds, route access, Dao Crystals and favors. SERVICE ECONOMY — Formation maintenance, healing, divination, legal oath-writing, artifact repair, beast handling, translation of ancient scripts and tribulation preparation are prestigious professions. MORTALS — Tianzhu contains enormous populations who never become true immortals. Dense Qi improves health and baseline strength, but birth in the Upper Realm does not guarantee cultivation talent. Their agriculture, crafts and administration still matter. LUXURY — High-level luxury means rarity of experience rather than gold: tea grown through a hundred seasonal Laws, music performed with soul resonance, a meal from an extinct beast recreated through memory, private access to a comet's Dao echo. This mundane infrastructure should appear in scenes so Tianzhu feels inhabited rather than like an endless sequence of immortal arenas.
- #48Forbidden Regions & Great Wonders of Tianzhuselective
Keys: Beast Crown Wilds, Heavenfall Scar, Tianzhu forbidden land, Grave of Suns, forbidden region, Clockless Sea, Unwritten Heaven
Tianzhu contains regions where even immortals behave cautiously. THE HEAVENFALL SCAR — A vast spatial wound surrounding portions of the broken celestial axis. Distances loop, ancient battlefields surface for minutes, and fragments of Canglan's lost history sometimes appear. THE CLOCKLESS SEA — A silver cloud-ocean where time flows inconsistently between islands. Expeditions may return before they departed or discover that centuries passed outside. THE GRAVE OF SUNS — A field of extinguished miniature stars and ruined furnace-worlds. Star-metal of unmatched quality can be harvested, but dormant stellar spirits and ancient war machines remain. THE UNWRITTEN HEAVEN — A pale territory where divination produces blank results and written prophecies fade. Some believe causality itself was damaged there. Fate cultivators treat it as either sacred or horrifying. THE BEAST-CROWN WILDS — Continents ruled primarily by ancient spirit-beast bloodlines rather than humans. Treaties, not conquest, maintain access. Several beast sovereign clans consider human bloodline harvesting an unforgivable crime. THE STILL REALM — A threshold near Samsara where motion, decay and thought gradually slow. Entry requires specialized soul protection. WONDERS need not contain loot. Some are pilgrimage sites, scientific mysteries, prisons, ecosystems or scars of history. Their existence should generate expeditions and politics without guaranteeing an inheritance for whoever enters.
- #49Tianzhu Titles, Etiquette & Social Frictionselective
Keys: Dao Friend, Immortal etiquette, junior, Heavenborn etiquette, Upper Realm title, senior, Tianzhu etiquette
UPPER-REALM ETIQUETTE is a survival technology. Immortals remember insults for centuries, so civilization developed ways to disagree without immediately creating blood feuds. DAO FRIEND is a respectful neutral address between cultivators when neither wishes to establish seniority. SENIOR/JUNIOR may refer to cultivation, lineage generation or institutional rank; ambiguity can be deliberate. ANCESTOR is generally reserved for founders, ancient lineage elders or beings whose descendants/disciples span many generations. Calling every strong cultivator 'Ancestor' sounds provincial. TITLES matter more than surnames in mixed society. Registry Marshal, Furnace Master, Sword Judge, Route-Mistress, Abbot, Archivist and similar offices communicate jurisdiction. FACE remains important but rational actors distinguish embarrassment from existential insult. A young heir being contradicted in public may seek revenge; their entire Dao Lord clan does not automatically mobilize over wounded pride. GIFTS create social obligations proportional to rarity and context. Accepting an expensive cultivation resource from a great house can imply willingness to negotiate future service even without a formal contract. DUELS are often bounded by witnessed terms: first blood, shattered defense, forced retreat, domain concession, or life-and-death. Violating terms damages reputation and may create oath consequences. CLIMBER ERRORS — New ascenders often overuse Lower-Realm titles, underestimate contract language, or mistake polite sponsorship for charity. Heavenborn sometimes mistake unfamiliar etiquette for ignorance. Such friction should create scenes without making every misunderstanding lethal.
- #50Core Overview
Keys: Heavenly Scriptures, Grand Heavenly Treasures, Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures, Nine Heavenly Scriptures
Before the Ancient War, before the Five Continents, the Nine Grand Heavenly Treasures already were. Each is not an artifact but a primordial cosmic constant — an uncrafted law of reality given form, existing alongside Heaven and Earth itself. One Treasure bonded to each of the Nine Sovereigns in the primordial age, not as a tool wielded but as an extension of the Sovereign's very being; nine Sovereigns, nine Treasures, and the number is no coincidence. Do not confuse them with the five Divine Artifacts — the World-Piercing Spear, the World-Sealing Pagoda, and their kin — which were forged as war matériel from severed dao-hearts and primordial beast-corpses during the Ancient War. The Treasures predate that war entirely. When the Nine Sovereigns vanished in the Heavenfall Cataclysm, their Treasures did not vanish with them: the Nine scattered, adrift across the cosmos rather than left behind in any one place — scattered, like the Sovereigns themselves, across an unanswered question. A Treasure surfacing proves nothing about its Sovereign's fate, but it is the closest thing to a clue the firmament has ever produced, which is why the great Upper Realm houses treat every rumor of one with total seriousness. These are not Lower Realm objects: none has ever been confirmed to surface in the Mortal Firmament in recorded history, and mortal cultivators know the Nine Heavenly Scriptures only as fragments of myth and half-believed scripture-echoes, never as real, findable things. Any Treasure that does surface belongs to the Upper Realm's strangest depths — adrift in the fracture around the broken Gate of Tianzhu, sealed in an Empyrean house's vault, or hidden inside realms far beyond anything Lower Realm cultivators ever explore. Each Treasure remains paired with a Heavenly Scripture expressing its primordial domain. A Treasure's mature description is cosmological potential, not a bearer power list. Access is staged and limited by cultivation, comprehension, compatibility, the Treasure's own response and what the bearer can survive.
