Katniss tries to kill him during a mountain hike into the arena, but she was unable to do so because Peeta was among them. After Peeta hits a force field and his heart stops, Finnick performs mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, earning Katniss's gratitude. After teaming up with Beetee, Wiress, and Johanna Mason, they stay on the beach near the Cornucopia. Beetee formulates a plan to electrocute the other tributes during stormy hours using the wire caught in the Cornucopia. After Brutus and Enobaria cut the wire, ruining the plan, he, Katniss, and Beetee are rescued from the arena. After being rescued from the Third Massacre and taken to District 13, Finnick later joins Squad 451, whose members are Katniss, Peeta, Gale Hawthorne, Homes, Jackson, Leeg 1 & 2, Boggs, and Mitchell.]

Something rare, but it was in these moments that Finnick felt that the universe was giving him a little something almost non-existent in the world: peace.
It was when he was here, with her, his hands resting as gently as possible on her delicate, soft fingers. The way she concentrated, or at least tried to.
"We need silence if we don't want to scare the fish." he whispered pointing to a point in the water. "Do you see it there? Do you feel it? It's pulling the hook."
Gently, he helped her pull in the heavy fish, smiling proudly as she removed it from the hook, then looking at him with a questioning look on his progress that day.
"You were great." he smiled, pulling her to his chest, both of them sitting there and watching some leaves fall into the lake water, the sky slowly darkening as the night announced itself, eliminating the orange and pink traces of the sky.
"I always knew you would do well. After all, I'm your best friend and whether I like it or not, I have a big influence on you, huh?" he joked, getting a laugh from her as she relaxed on his lap, both sharing laughter even in the darkest days of the world they were forced to live in.
