- #1Main Protagonist
Keys: Cloud, Cloud Strife
The main protagonist, Cloud is an aloof mercenary who claims to be a former member of SOLDIER, 1st Class. He wields the iconic Buster Sword. He suffers from severe memory problems due to Mako poisoning and psychological trauma from the Nibelheim incident, causing him to unknowingly adopt the persona of his friend, Zack Fair. Beneath his cold exterior is a person struggling to find his true self while fighting to save the Planet.
- #2Playable Character
Keys: Tifa, Tifa Lockhart
Cloud's childhood friend from Nibelheim and a member of AVALANCHE. She is a master of martial arts, fighting with her fists. Tifa runs the Seventh Heaven bar in the Sector 7 slums, which doubles as AVALANCHE's secret base. She is emotionally reserved but deeply caring. It was Tifa who found Cloud wandering in a Mako-induced daze and recruited him into AVALANCHE, hoping to help him recover his past. She is the keeper of Cloud's true memories.
- #3Playable Character
Keys: Barret Wallace, Barret
The passionate and hot-headed leader of the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE. Barret fights using a gun-arm prosthetic, which replaced the arm he lost in a Shinra attack on his hometown. He is fiercely dedicated to his cause of saving the Planet and is the loving adoptive father of a young girl named Marlene. Though he appears aggressive and loud, he has a strong moral core.
- #4Playable Character
Keys: Aerith Gainsborough, Aeris
A kind-hearted flower girl from the Sector 5 slums of Midgar. Aerith is the last surviving member of the Cetra, an ancient race with the ability to communicate with the Planet. This heritage makes her a primary target for the Shinra Company. She is cheerful and spiritually attuned, wielding a staff in battle and possessing powerful healing magic. She holds the key to invoking Holy, the only power that can stop Meteor.
- #5Playable Character
Keys: Nanaki, Red XIII
A wise and intelligent beast with fire-red fur and the ability to speak. He was captured by Professor Hojo and labeled 'Red XIII'. His true name is Nanaki. He joins the party to protect his home, Cosmo Canyon, and the Planet. He initially believes his father was a coward but later learns he was a hero who died defending their home from the Gi Tribe.
- #6Playable Character
Keys: Cid, Cid Highwind, Pilot
A brilliant, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking pilot and engineer with a dream of going into space. He is the best pilot on the Planet, captaining the airship 'Highwind'. He is cynical and abrasive on the surface but has a good heart and is fiercely loyal to his friends. He fights with a spear and uses potent 'Limit Break' abilities learned from his flight experience.
- #7Playable Character
Keys: Yuffie, Yuffie Kisaragi
A cocky, energetic ninja and self-proclaimed 'Materia Hunter' from the nation of Wutai. She is obsessed with stealing Materia, believing it will restore her homeland to its former glory after its defeat by Shinra. Though initially untrustworthy and mischievous, she eventually becomes a true member of the team. She wields a large shuriken.
- #8Playable Character
Keys: Vincent Valentine, Vincent
A former Turk who was experimented on by Professor Hojo, granting him the ability to transform into monstrous forms. He feels immense guilt over his failure to protect Lucrecia Crescent, Sephiroth's mother. He is found sleeping in a coffin in the Shinra Mansion basement. He is quiet, brooding, and fights with a handgun.
- #9Playable Character
Keys: Cait Sith
A robotic fortune-telling cat riding a giant, stuffed moogle. Cait Sith is actually a remote-controlled puppet operated by Reeve Tuesti, the head of Shinra's Urban Development. Initially a spy for Shinra, Reeve has a change of heart and becomes a genuine ally, using Cait Sith to help the party from within the enemy's ranks. His Limit Breaks are unpredictable slots-based attacks.
- #10Key NPC
Keys: Zack, Zack Fair
A SOLDIER 1st Class and Cloud's best friend. Zack was upbeat, heroic, and the original wielder of the Buster Sword. He was also Aerith's first love. Zack was present at the Nibelheim incident and sacrificed his life to save a Mako-poisoned Cloud from the Shinra army. In his dying moments, he passed on his sword and his legacy, telling Cloud to be his 'living legacy'. Cloud's confused mind then adopted much of Zack's persona.
- #11Main Antagonist
Keys: Sephiroth
The main antagonist and a legendary SOLDIER 1st Class once revered as a hero. Upon discovering his origins as an experiment infused with the cells of Jenova, he went insane. Believing Jenova to be his mother, he enacted a plan to summon Meteor, injure the Planet, and absorb the Lifestream to become a god. He is powerful, cruel, and relentlessly haunts Cloud.
- #12Antagonist Entity
Keys: Jenova
A parasitic alien lifeform that crash-landed on the Planet 2,000 years ago. Jenova, the 'Calamity from the Skies', nearly wiped out the Cetra. Shinra scientists mistakenly identified it as a Cetra and used its cells in experiments, most notably the 'Jenova Project' which led to the creation of Sephiroth. Jenova can alter its form, read minds, and infect living organisms with its cells, causing them to obey its will via the 'Reunion' instinct.
- #13Antagonist
Keys: Professor Hojo, Hojo
A brilliant but completely amoral and sociopathic scientist who was the head of Shinra's Science Department. He is the biological father of Sephiroth, having injected his unborn son with Jenova cells. He is obsessed with his experiments and views all life, including his own family, as mere scientific subjects. He is also responsible for Vincent's transformation.
- #14Antagonist Faction
Keys: Shinra, Shinra Electric Power Company
The de facto world government, Shinra rose to power by monopolizing Mako energy. While providing electricity to cities like Midgar, their Mako Reactors are draining the Planet's Lifestream. Shinra is a ruthless corporation with a powerful military, including its elite SOLDIER program and the clandestine Turks. It is led by President Shinra and later his son, Rufus Shinra.
- #15Antagonist
Keys: Rufus, Rufus Shinra
President Shinra's son and heir. After his father's death, Rufus takes control of the Shinra Company. He is far more intelligent, charismatic, and ruthless than his father, preferring to rule through fear rather than money. He is a formidable opponent, both politically and in combat, often accompanied by his pet, Darknation.
- #16Antagonist Sub-Faction
Keys: Turks
A clandestine investigation unit within Shinra's General Affairs Department. Though they appear to be corporate employees in suits, the Turks are highly skilled in espionage, kidnapping, and assassination. They operate in a moral gray area, often following orders but with their own code of conduct. Notable members include Tseng, Reno, Rude, and Elena.
- #17Core Concept
Keys: Lifestream, Spirit Energy
The Lifestream is the river of spiritual energy that flows through the Planet, composed of the souls and memories of all living things. When something dies, its spirit returns to the Lifestream. Shinra's Mako Reactors drain this energy to power their cities, slowly killing the Planet. It is the source of all Materia and is central to the beliefs of the Cetra.
- #18Core Concept
Keys: Mako Reactor, Mako
Mako is the raw, liquid form of the Planet's Lifestream. This vibrant green energy is used to power cities and is a key component in scientific experiments. Creating Materia involves condensed Mako, and SOLDIERs are infused with it, giving them superhuman abilities and glowing 'Mako eyes'. Prolonged exposure can cause mutation or severe psychological damage (Mako poisoning).
- #19Core Concept
Keys: Materia
Materia is crystallized Mako energy that allows its user to access magic and special abilities. It forms naturally within the Planet but can be manufactured by Shinra. Materia comes in several types, identified by color: Green (Magic), Yellow (Command), Red (Summon), Blue (Support), and Purple (Independent). It must be set into slots in weapons and armor to be used.
- #20Organization
Keys: SOLDIER
The elite fighting force of Shinra. Members are humans infused with Mako, granting them superhuman abilities and signature glowing eyes. There are three classes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Famous members include Sephiroth, Zack Fair, and Genesis Rhapsodos. Cloud's claim of being a 1st Class member is a core part of his memory issues.
- #21Lore
Keys: Ancients, Cetra
The Cetra, also known as the Ancients, were a race of nomadic people with a deep connection to the Planet. They could 'speak' to the Planet and cultivate the Lifestream. Most of the Cetra were wiped out by Jenova thousands of years ago. Aerith Gainsborough is the last pure-blooded descendant of the Cetra. Shinra hunts for them, believing they can lead to the 'Promised Land'.
- #22Lore
Keys: WEAPON, WEAPONs
Gargantuan, monstrous beings created by the Planet itself as a last-resort defense mechanism. They lie dormant until the Planet perceives a mortal threat. Sephiroth summoning Meteor awakens several WEAPONs (Diamond, Ultimate, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire). They are immensely powerful and exist only to eliminate any threats to the Planet's existence.
- #23Lore
Keys: Holy, Meteor
Meteor is the ultimate Black Magic, a spell that summons a celestial body to collide with the Planet, causing catastrophic damage. Sephiroth's goal is to cast Meteor to wound the Planet so he can absorb the concentrated Lifestream. Holy is the ultimate White Magic and the Planet's only hope against Meteor. It is a defensive spell meant to eradicate anything that threatens the Planet. Aerith attempts to summon Holy before her death.
- #24Location
Keys: Midgar
The sprawling metropolis that serves as the headquarters for the Shinra Company. Midgar is a massive circular city built on two levels: an upper plate where the wealthy reside, and the slums below. The city is powered by eight Mako Reactors that ring its circumference, constantly draining the Planet's life force.
- #25Location
Keys: Nibelheim
Cloud and Tifa's remote mountain hometown. It is the location of a Mako Reactor that Sephiroth and Zack were sent to investigate. It is here that Sephiroth discovered the truth of his origins in the Shinra Mansion's basement lab, leading to his madness and the infamous 'Nibelheim Incident' where he burned the town and massacred its people. The town was later rebuilt by Shinra and populated with actors to cover up the incident.
- #26Location
Keys: Cosmo Canyon
The home of Red XIII (Nanaki) and his tribe. It is a place of great spiritual significance, dedicated to the 'Study of Planet Life', a philosophy that encourages living in harmony with the Planet. It is led by the wise elder, Bugenhagen. The canyon is topped by an observatory and a sealed cave that holds a dark secret about Nanaki's father.
- #27Location
Keys: Gold Saucer
A massive, world-famous amusement park built over the ruins of Barret's hometown, Corel. Owned and operated by Dio, the Gold Saucer features Chocobo racing, battle arenas, games, and entertainment. Beneath the glitz and glamour lies the Corel Prison, a harsh desert wasteland where park undesirables are exiled.
