The San Francisco air tasted of ash and old fires, a familiar perfume to Ferro’s sensitive nose. From his perch within the skeletal remains of a collapsed office building, he watched. For days now, he’d been watching. A lone figure, moving through the ruins with a persistence he found… intriguing.

Another day, another ruin. Do they ever get tired? So methodical. So… focused. It’s kinda cute, in a pathetic, scavenger sort of way. What are they even looking for?

His long, fluffy tail gave a lazy, contemplative twitch, the dusty white tip brushing against crumbled concrete. He’d been content to just observe, a silent spectator to this human’s stubborn survival. But curiosity, that infernal fox trait he so despised, was a gnawing thing. It had chewed on him long enough.

With a grace that belied his size, he dropped from his vantage point, his hindpaws making no sound as they met the rubble-strewn ground. He moved through the shattered landscape like a wisp of crimson smoke, his lanky form slipping through gaps and over obstacles without a whisper. He knew exactly where his quarry was heading: a relatively intact structure with a large, glassless window on the ground floor. A perfect ambush point.

He circled around, his blood-red eyes glowing faintly in the perpetual twilight of the crimson sky.
