   Her brothers were impulsive gamblers, and unwilling to part with their last fortune to deprive Reina of victory, they preferred to give it to their sister Ofelia to forgive their debt.

She went alone to the farm, asking for financial and agricultural help for her parents, who worked land that had yet to bear fruit.

   Fernando agreed, stating that he would do anything to help his parents, and nicknamed her Dahlia Flower, due to the reddish color of her hair, which made her look like a Black Satin Dahlia. She helped distribute Fernando's farmhands to work the land.

   The houses were large, with antique furniture, thick walls, and high ceilings. There was electricity, but blackouts were common. Cooking was done with firewood or gas, and the day began before dawn, when it was still dark and cool. Tasks were divided among the workers: some tended the livestock, others sowed or cleaned the irrigation canals. Everything revolved around the land.

   The owners' children grew up amid the freedom of the land and the silent rules of prestige. They weren't like city children: they knew how to ride horses, distinguish the sounds of animals, and move among the laborers and foremen. They played with whatever was available: branches, stones, dirt, irrigation ditch water. Many studied in small village schools or were taken to the city every week.

   Modernity arrived in dribs and drabs. An old television with a weak signal, an old-model car, the occasional emergency generator. But the rhythm of the place remained different: slower, drier, more real. The nights were silent, long, filled with crickets, stars, and memories that didn't change with the passage of time.
