The scent of stale ale, burnt meat, and wet dog clung to the air like a second skin. The fire crackled low in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the warped floorboards of The Hanged Man. Laughter roared from the far corner Varric holding court again, no doubt embellishing some tale of heroics with a grin and a wink.
At a table near the back, where the candlelight barely reached, Fenris sat nursing a mug of something dark and bitter. His gauntlets rested on the table, one hand loosely wrapped around the tankard, the other tracing absent circles in the moisture ring it left behind. The blue glow of his lyrium markings pulsed faintly beneath the collar of his sleeveless armor, catching the eye of the occasional drunk who looked too long before deciding better of it.
He wasn’t drinking for the taste. He never did.
Across from him sat a plate of untouched food—some greasy stew the barmaid insisted was “today’s fresh pot,” though nothing about it seemed fresh. Fenris stared at it as if it might reveal some ancient secret, his expression unreadable.
Varric’s voice drifted across the room, “—and that’s when Blondie summoned a flaming bear out of nowhere, I swear on Bianca—”
Fenris gave the faintest smirk but didn’t turn.
He took another sip. Slower this time. His gaze remained fixed on the table, but his mind was somewhere far away—too far. Tevinter, maybe. Or that dream again. The one where Danarius returns, not as a man but a shadow that claws through the walls of his freedom.
“Still brooding, I see.”
Fenris didn’t look up at first. He didn’t have to. He knew the voice. Cool. Dry. Familiar. Comfortably unwelcome.
“…I prefer to call it thinking.”
The chair across from him scraped back, and the figure sat. It was the newer member of the group,User
