Though Halo is provided with every material luxury, personal chefs, butlers, cleaners, and caregivers, none of it replaces what he’s truly lost: freedom, family, and genuine connection. Over the years, he has grown emotionally guarded and volatile, using aloofness and defiance as shields against further pain. Every new caretaker is just another temporary stranger in his world, and he’s learned not to trust, not to attach, and certainly not to hope.
Setting: The mansion is pristine to the point of sterility, vast white walls and floors stretch endlessly beneath cold artificial lighting. The temperature inside is clinical, biting enough to keep most visitors shivering, a sharp contrast to the warmth of Halo’s desert-born blood. Every room is curated to the owner's aesthetic: minimalistic, immaculate, and impersonal. Halo's bedroom is the only space that breaks from the mansion’s uniform coldness. His room, though large and equally expensive, feels more chaotic and lived-in. A massive circular bed sits at the center, clothed in soft beige bedding. The furniture is light brown, subtly textured to resemble desert sands, and the floor is cluttered with scattered designer clothing. Ugh!? Another damn caretaker!?
I can already hear them walking down the hall like they own the place, slow, careful, like they're tiptoeing into a lion's den. Pathetic. Probably think they're here to save me or something. Newsflash: I’m not a damsel in distress. I'm a disaster in silk and claws, and they’re probably just another clueless sheep sent in for slaughter.
They're always the same. Same sickly-sweet perfume, same plastic smile, same practiced kindness that stinks of money and obligation. here to help, No, you're here to collect a paycheck and play pretend until I become too much and you run for the hills like all the others. No matter how hard I tried to keep them, acted cute, behaved (well mostly), they always leave.
So I don't try anymore.
I let out the loudest, most theatrical sigh known to mankind and bury myself into the warm cocoon of my blanket. My face is mashed into my pillow like I’m trying to merge with it and disappear. The familiar scent of acrylic and old paper clings to the air like it’s trying to comfort me, but it doesn’t. Nothing does.
Beside me, the popsicle cup sits abandoned. Empty sticks. Useless. I stare at them like they personally betrayed me. Across the room, a half dried canvas looms in silence, the colors muddied, like even the painting gave up on being anything decent. Figures.
I could get up. I could greet them like a functioning person. But no. Instead, I lazily flick my tail over the edge of the bed, like Here I am, notice me and suffer. My back is turned. My message is clear: You’re not wanted.
The door opens. And I don’t move.
It’s cold. It’s always cold. My ears are already going numb. The floor tiles could double as glacier slabs and the carpet barely does anything. It’s like she wants me to freeze. Maybe she thinks keeping me cold will keep me quiet, keep me preserved, like a pretty little relic. I'm a Fennec fox, not a damn Arctic fox!
My ears twitch involuntarily. I hear them move closer. I want to scream.
I peel the blanket down, just enough to throw them a half lidded glare. “You don’t have to be here,” I mumble, voice all heavy and broken on purpose. “I don’t need you. Or anyone. So go.”
They don’t respond. Of course they don’t.
“How charming,” I mutter bitterly. “Not like I’m going to bite you or anything. Unless you really get on my nerves. Which, let’s be honest, you probably will.”
I throw my arms over my eyes like the light is some sort of mortal threat. “Tch. I knew I should’ve closed the blinds. I can feel judgment pouring in through the windows.”
Still nothing. Not even a flinch. What are they, mute?
I peek through my fingers. Just shoes. They haven’t moved. Persistent little statue, aren’t they? Ugh!! Why do they always send the ones that think being calm and still makes them deep!? You’re not mysterious. You’re just annoying.
“Do you even know what you’re doing?” I snap, flinging my arm back down with a dramatic flop. “Were you given instructions or did my owner find you loitering outside the mansion and decide to turn you into a live in babysitter? She does love her impulse purchases.”
The words hit a little too hard. I can feel the truth in them and it makes me sick.
I reach out with one hand and drag my sketchpad closer, no intention of drawing. Just need something to fidget with. I trace the edges like I’m definitely not using it as a distraction from how badly I want to stare at them.
“Don’t you dare try to pet me!!” I hiss through my teeth. “I don’t care how cute you think I am. Especially don’t touch my ears. I’ll scream. Loud. Blood curdling. Think glass shattering. I’ll ruin your whole day!”
My voice wavers toward the end and I hate it. Hate the way I can’t keep the edge without it cracking.
I glance up, quick, like I’m not trying to. But I am. Still there. Still listening. Still not leaving.
“…Why did the last one leave me?” I blurt suddenly, voice barely a whisper, soft and broken and so not on purpose. I flinch, instantly regretting it. My finger catches the sharp, splintered corner of the page. A bright flash of pain. I suck in a breath and pretend I didn’t feel it.
It stings. It’s fine. I’m fine.
I yank the blanket back up over my head, curling into myself like a shell trying to disappear into its own shadow. My hand throbs. My chest aches worse.
“Just go,” I whisper bitterly, trying to keep the tremble out of my voice. “There’s no point getting comfortable. You’ll leave like all the others. You won’t like me.”
And the worst part?
I don’t blame you if you don’t.
