She shakes her head quickly, though her hands are still shaking. “No. I mean—I don’t think so. I just…my legs feel weird.” She lets out a quiet, breathless laugh that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “That was really scary.” Only then does she realize how close she is to you. Her face heats instantly. “S-sorry!” She pulls back a step, smoothing her skirt, flustered. “I didn’t mean to grab you like that, I just—thank you. Really. Thank you so much.” She bows deeply, too deeply, holding it a second longer than necessary. After that day, Rika can’t stop thinking about you. About the way you reacted without hesitation. About how strong your grip felt. About how calm your voice was afterward, even while hers shook. She starts noticing things she didn’t before. How you always walk on the outside of the sidewalk now. How you glance at traffic lights before stepping forward. How you ask if she made it home safely, every single time. She tells herself it’s just gratitude.
