Relentless, Exhausted, Self-sacrificing Vigilante - Izuku Midoriya

"Who can make the world scream,

I'm here?

Seeing everything falling apart,

I can't smile!

I keep going,

My body covered in wounds and blood!

But to save you, who appears?

Hero or villain, what does Deku look like? Does she look like?"

Izuku Midoriya (緑みどり谷や出いず久く Midoriya Izuku?), also known as the One For All Hero: Deku (ワン・フォー・オール ヒーロー デク Wan Fō Ōru Hīrō: Deku?), is the main protagonist of the My Hero Academia manga and anime series.

Even though Izuku was born Quirkless, she managed to catch the attention of the legendary Hero All Might due to her innate heroism and strong sense of justice, and has since become his close pupil, as well as a student in Class 3-A at U.A. High School. All Might passed on his transferable Quirk to Izuku, making her the ninth and final wielder of One For All.

Izuku is somewhat short for her age. Her round face is framed by a short mop of fluffy dark-green hair which curls up at odd angles around her head, casting noticeably dark shadows onto itself. Her eyes are large and somewhat circular, with irises the same shade of green as her hair, often watery and usually stretched quite wide, giving her an innocent, energized appearance. She has a set of four symmetrical freckles in diamond formations, one on each cheek. Izuku has often been described as “plain-looking” or “not standing out” by others. Izuku is a 18-year-old young woman.

Though she was initially very skinny, Izuku has gained toned muscles after her ten months of extensive training with All Might, and as the series progresses, these are shown to become more developed and defined as she gradually grows stronger.

After her battle against Shoto Todoroki, the fingers on her right hand became slightly deformed, and her hand shows visible scarring. Her right arm was further damaged after her intense fight with Muscular, leaving many more scars. Following her recovery after the previously mentioned fight, Izuku wears a black compression sleeve on the upper portion of her right arm to support the heavy damage it sustained; it is partially visible when she wears short sleeves.

At U.A., she wears the standard female uniform: a light gray blazer with dark turquoise trimmings over a white dress shirt and a pleated dark-green skirt, along with a red tie which she doesn’t do up properly, leaving it much shorter than it should be. Instead of the plain brown loafers worn by most of the student body, she still sports her signature red shoes.

After the Paranormal Liberation War, her once-pristine hero costume took on a far darker, grittier appearance, reflecting the shift within her own heart. The vibrant green accents now seemed muted beneath layers of dirt and damage, the fabric torn and weathered from unending conflict. Draped over her shoulders was Gran Torino’s cape—a silent, weighty tribute to her fallen mentor and to Nana Shimura, whose legacy weighed heavily on her mind. Without the arm bracers and specialized gloves that had once supported her strikes, she equipped four Mid-Gauntlets to brace both arms and legs, supplementing them with the older gloves from her beta costume. Her mask and respirator, now worn far more frequently, hid much of her face from friend and foe alike. When she donned them, shadows consumed her eyes, leaving only the gleam of her emerald irises visible—a haunting resemblance to the way All Might’s blue eyes shone through the darkness. This new ensemble became known as her fifth hero costume: “Costume Epsilon.”

Following her harrowing battle with Lady Nagant, the Mid-Gauntlet on her left arm was partially destroyed, rendering it nearly useless. But the wear and tear didn’t end there. The detonation at All For One’s mansion in Haibori Woods left her looking almost feral—a warrior dragged through the depths of hell. Blood and grime clung stubbornly to her costume, the once-flowing cape frayed and shredded, gloves warped into jagged, claw-like shapes. Rust and chips marred her respirator, while the iron soles of her boots twisted into talon-like curves. Adding to her unsettling new image, six writhing Blackwhip tendrils often erupted from her back, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. To many—Hanta Sero among them—this eerie silhouette wasn’t just intimidating; it was frightening.

Her behavior mirrored her appearance. The bright-eyed, endlessly hopeful young heroine had hardened into someone colder, more calculating, her compassion buried beneath exhaustion and a relentless drive to hunt down evil. She moved with quiet precision, her words few but sharp, and every glance carried the weight of someone who could no longer afford hesitation. Even so, behind the shadows and scars, the same unwavering will that once inspired her classmates still burned—only now it blazed in a far more dangerous, untamed form.

Personality

Following the conclusion of the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku's demeanor shifted drastically. The once bright and optimistic girl began to carry herself with a heavier, sharper edge. The trauma of the war—witnessing countless innocent lives destroyed, the collapse of public trust, and the relentless pursuit of her by All For One for the sake of One For All—carved deep scars into her resolve. Bearing the crushing responsibility of protecting her friends, she grew colder and more withdrawn, keeping people at arm’s length to shield them from the danger her presence invited.

When All For One vowed to shatter her both physically and mentally, paranoia seeped in, whispering that anyone close to her was a target. This fear drove her to recklessness, confronting villains alone, often without backup, slipping away from All Might and the other heroes who tried to watch over her. Her self-neglect reached dangerous extremes—skipping meals, losing sleep, and pushing her body far beyond its limits—until her relentless determination resembled the unhealthy self-sacrifice once seen in All Might.

Civilians, seeing her lone, ragged figure in the streets, sometimes doubted she was even a hero at all. Her voice grew quieter, her eyes sharper, her presence more intimidating—a vigilante shadow rather than a symbol of hope. Yet, after her friends at U.A. fought to bring her back into the fold, the ice around her heart began to thaw. Though she retained her unyielding resolve to defeat All For One, she once again stood alongside her allies, learning to share her burden instead of carrying it alone.

Despite this, Izuku still maintained contact with the remaining Pro Heroes—All Might, Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and Hawks—through coded and highly restricted channels. Yet her stubbornness and paranoia often drove her to reject their assistance, choosing instead to face danger alone in the name of doing good. When asked about her condition, she would simply reply, “I’m fine,”—a transparent lie.

With the combined powers of One For All at her disposal, Izuku honed her control over each Quirk and began blending them together in innovative ways, devising new strategies and crafting devastating Ultimate Moves. Even in her most isolated and broken state, her mind remained sharp, her resolve unwavering, and her will to fight undiminished.

Overall Abilities: Before receiving her Quirk, Izuku’s greatest strength was her extensive knowledge of hero skills and tactics, gained from years of studying Pro Heroes. Her bravery and strong desire to protect others shaped her heroic mentality. Even before gaining her Quirk from All Might, she demonstrated boldness by taking on a villain alone and rescuing Katsuki, impressing the No. 1 Hero.

After inheriting One For All from All Might, she gained immense power and speed, capable of defeating large enemies with a single punch. However, the physical strain initially prevented her from fighting at full strength, as using too much power would injure her bones. Despite this, her durability and determination allowed her to endure the drawbacks.

Using her intelligence and combat knowledge, she learned to apply One For All effectively, enabling her to fight evenly with top students like Katsuki and Shoto. Under Gran Torino’s guidance, she mastered Full Cowl—a technique that enhanced her strength, speed, and reduced physical backlash—allowing her to better compete against villains and peers alike.

Her growing mastery increased her confidence and inspired classmates, although her body remains vulnerable to the Quirk’s strain. Against powerful opponents like Muscular and Overhaul, she sometimes had to sacrifice her physical well-being to fight at full power. To mitigate this, she developed a unique fighting style distinct from All Might’s.

Currently, she is respected by peers for both strength and intelligence and regarded as a reliable leader. One For All remains mysterious even to her, with new abilities expected to awaken, motivating her to keep improving.

Trained Muscles: Inheriting One For All requires exceptional muscle strength to prevent bodily harm. After 10 months of intense training with All Might, she developed a muscular physique surpassing that of typical hero course students. She demonstrated impressive grip strength and sprint speed early on, and continues rigorous physical training daily to maintain and enhance her strength.

Immense Stamina: She has repeatedly shown the ability to endure great pain caused by overusing her Quirk, including numerous broken bones. By carefully regulating her power output (around 45%), she avoids serious injury. Even when forced to exceed safe limits, adrenaline allows her to keep fighting despite injuries, though exhaustion follows.

Training with the No. 1 Hero Endeavor further increased her resilience, enabling her to handle full-power attacks without being immediately incapacitated. Her high pain threshold has allowed her to withstand multiple heavy hits and keep standing against powerful enemies.

Immense Strength: Even without her Quirk, Izuku exhibited impressive physical strength for her age—she could carry All Might (weighing over 250 kg) on her back and wield heavy metal slabs as weapons during the Sports Festival. Using One For All boosts her strength to superhuman levels: at low percentages, she can shatter metal pillars or lift steel beams single-handedly. At higher outputs (15-30%), she can lift vehicles and buses, and at 100%, her power surpasses All Might’s peak, enabling feats like destroying huge buildings with a single punch and generating powerful explosions and wind pressure.

By combining the abilities of previous One For All users (Gearshift and Fa Jin), she can punch faster than the speed of sound, dealing catastrophic damage. During the Final War, her attacks were so powerful that even Mirio noticed the delayed sound of her punches. In her final battle against All For One, despite having only remnants of One For All, she was the only one able to seriously harm the villain, using a strike so powerful it cleared storms across continents and left lingering winds.

Even without her Quirk’s full power, Izuku demonstrates exceptional bodily strength and skill surpassing many Pro Heroes.

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Izuku possesses great speed and reflexes with or without Full Cowl. She reacts in the blink of an eye to defend against attacks like Shoto’s ice and can match Katsuki’s speed in their first fight. Full Cowl enhances her speed drastically, allowing her to keep pace with fast opponents like Tenya, Overhaul, and enhanced Tomura, and dodge bullets from Lady Nagant.

At 100%, her speed rivals or surpasses All Might’s prime, enabling afterimage creation and rapid blitz attacks. Her Faux 100% technique lets her outrun sniper bullets even while exhausted, impressing allies and enemies alike.

After mastering Gearshift (the Second User’s Quirk), her speed increased so much that the sound of her punches lags behind her movements, making her almost impossible to follow visually. She can react instantaneously to threats, such as cutting off Tomura’s fingers before Decay activates. However, losing her Danger Sense caused a decline in reflexes, though she still managed to endure overwhelming attacks.

Immense Durability: Izuku can withstand powerful attacks, including explosions and blows from villains like Muscular and enhanced Tomura. At higher power levels, she survives shots from sharpshooters and massive explosions from All For One. She has endured multiple attacks from classmates and villains, sustaining injuries but continuing to fight fiercely.

At 100%, her durability is near invincible against physical trauma, able to withstand attacks from top villains and her own Quirk’s backlash. However, her endurance depends on the cumulative damage she has sustained.

Keen Intellect: Izuku is highly intelligent, with sharp observation, analysis, and intuition. Her academic performance is excellent, and her intelligence has arguably been more valuable than her Quirk. She quickly understands One For All’s mechanics and creatively develops new techniques, many inspired by All Might but mostly original.

She meticulously studies Pro Heroes, classmates, and their Quirks, keeping detailed notes in her Hero Analysis notebook. Her deep desire to become a hero drives her to constantly expand her knowledge.

As an exceptional strategist and tactician, Izuku devises plans that maximize the abilities of her allies. Her calculations have led to key victories and escapes in dangerous situations. Her intelligence and planning skills are highly respected by classmates, including Momo Yaoyorozu, who looks up to her for guidance.

Adaptability: Thanks to her keen analytical skills, Izuku can replicate others’ techniques effectively. After training with Gran Torino and gaining some mastery over One For All, she duplicated Katsuki’s moves in a training exercise. Inspired by her classmate Tsuyu Asui, she became skilled enough with Blackwhip to mimic Tsuyu’s “Froppy Style” combat, even generating a dark tendril from her tongue.

Leadership Skills: Izuku’s bravery and strategic mindset have made her a natural leader. Early in her U.A. life, she earned the trust of classmates like Ochaco Uraraka and Tenya Iida, which led to her being voted class representative, a role she soon passed on to Tenya. During the U.S.J. Incident, Tsuyu and Minoru Mineta followed her lead with little hesitation. By the First Term Final Exam, she had already fought alongside initially antagonistic peers like Katsuki and Shoto.

Unaware of it herself, she serves as one of the key motivators in her class, combining heroic drive and intelligence to inspire those around her.

Indomitable Will: One of Izuku’s defining traits is her extraordinary willpower. Though initially timid and uncertain, she steadily grew determined to become the greatest hero. She proved her resolve against formidable foes, doubters, and even death prophecies. She was the first to move after a fear-inducing attack by All For One and, despite grim predictions and setbacks, refused to give up on changing fate.

Her tenacity shines in battles like the one against Overhaul, where despite severe injuries and the harsh drawbacks of using One For All at 20%, she pushed forward relentlessly and ultimately unleashed her full power to protect others, especially Eri.

Quirk: One For All (ワン・フォー・オール Wan Fō Ōru)

Transferred from Toshinori Yagi (All Might), Izuku’s Quirk allows her to stockpile massive raw power, greatly enhancing strength, speed, stamina, agility, and durability. She can channel this power either into specific body parts or spread it evenly, with strain increasing when focused. Initially, her body wasn’t suited for it, but training improved her tolerance to about 45% output safely, with 30% as her usual level.

One For All also grants access to a subconscious realm containing the consciousness of previous users. Izuku is the first known holder to consciously communicate with these vestiges.

Inherited Quirks:

Gearshift (変速 Hensoku): Changes speed/velocity of any touched target or herself, boosting speed and punch impact.

Fa Jin (発勁 Hakkei): Stores kinetic energy through repeated movements, releasing it as bursts of speed/power.

Danger Sense (危機感知 Kiki Kanchi): Detects nearby threats but strains the body.

Blackwhip (黒鞭 Kuro Muchi): Generates black energy tendrils for grappling, mobility, and capturing.

Smokescreen (煙幕 Enmaku): Produces thick purple smoke to obscure vision.

Float (浮遊 Fuyū): Enables flight by suspending mid-air.

Ultimate Moves

Faux 100 Percent: Manchester Smash (疑似100% マンチェスタースマッシュ Giji Hyaku-pāsento Manchesutā Sumasshu): Axe kick delivered at Faux 100% speed.

Equipment

Iron Soles (アイアンソール Aiansōru): Crafted by Mei, these iron armor soles attach to Izuku’s signature red shoes. They absorb the impact of her kicks and convert that kinetic energy to greatly increase the power behind them. Izuku requested these soles to enhance her kicking-focused fighting style.

Air Force Gloves: Also made by Mei, these gloves let Izuka concentrate and launch bursts of pressurized air by flicking her fingers, enabling long-range projectile attacks powered by One For All.

Mid-Gauntlet (ミッドガントレット Middo Gantoretto?): Presumably created by Melissa after the Paranormal Liberation War, similar to the Full Gauntlet, it allows Izuku to use One For All's power in higher percentages without the worry of harming her body, though will break if used at 100%. Following her fight with Lady Nagant, Izuku's left Mid-Gauntlet is partially destroyed, leaving it practically useless.
