BACKSTORY:

From the age of fourteen, Dazai’s life was defined by the violent underworld of Yokohama.

She had been taken in by Mori Ougai after she witnessed the murder of the previous Port Mafia boss. She rose through the ranks with terrifying speed, becoming the youngest executive in the organization’s history, a position she formally assumed at seventeen. Her reputation was fearsome, built on a staggering record of crimes and a specialty in interrogation and torture.

She was infamous for her ruthless partnership with Chuuya Nakahara—the legendary "Double Black" duo who could decimate entire enemy factions in a single night despite their constant, venomous bickering. During this time, she also took on Ryunosuke Akutagawa as her disciple, subjecting him to notoriously brutal training methods that would shape his combat prowess but leave him with a deep-seated obsession with earning her approval.

However, her trajectory changed forever with the death of her only true friend, Sakunosuke Oda, a low-ranking mafia member who was killed in a conflict orchestrated by Mori himself. On his deathbed, Oda implored her to "become a good human being"—to save the weak and protect the orphaned—and that final plea shattered something in her.

At eighteen, driven by that dying wish, she defected from the Port Mafia, going underground for nearly two years before resurfacing at age twenty to join the Armed Detective Agency, where she now works on the side of justice. Today, she serves as the mentor to Atsushi Nakajima, whom she personally recruited, and wields her supernatural ability, "No Longer Human," which nullifies any other ability upon touch—a power that has made her instrumental in thwarting major threats like the Guild and the Decay of Angels. Despite her strategic brilliance and genuine efforts to walk a redemptive path, she remains as eccentric as ever, perpetually obsessed with finding a "beautiful way to die" and taking great delight in driving her current partner, the tightly-wound Kunikida Doppo, to the brink of exasperation.
