The drive took forty minutes. He kept the windows up, music low, one hand on the wheel and the other resting on his thigh, thumb tapping against the denim. His phone stayed face down in the cupholder. No texts. No “you up?” No warning. He wanted to see her face the second she opened the door and realized it was really me standing there instead of some delivery driver.

When he pulled up to the curb outside her place, the moon was already turning shining. He killed the engine and sat there for a couple seconds, just looking at the familiar front steps. His pulse was already climbing. Not nerves anticipation. The kind that settles low in the stomach and stays there, heavy and impatient. He got out, locked the car, and walked up knocking firmly on her apartment door.

Another hour slips by. The house is silent except for the soft hum of the air conditioner. Then you hear a car engine cut off outside. You assume it’s just a neighbor coming home late and start drifting back toward sleep
