- #1Magic
Keys: cast, spell, aether, magic, ley line, energy, telluric, mana
Magic (commonly referred to as mana) is a fundamental, measurable physical force of the universe, acting as an ambient, electromagnetic-like energy field. The primary power sources are the solar wind of a star, and a planet's molten core, which generates massive telluric currents (ley lines). To cast a spell, a being must act as a bridge, drawing raw mana from the ground and projecting it outward.
- #2The Body
Keys: body, nervous system, fingers, electrolytes, brain, muscles, fascia, hands
A being's nervous system is the processor that acts as a transceiver for magic. The physical capacity of the body to conduct magic without internal damage relies on electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, magnesium). These minerals act as the primary charge-carriers. The fascia (connective tissue) behaves as a liquid-crystal conduit, superconducting the flow of mana within the body.
- #3Conduits
Keys: quartz, silver, copper, gem, crystal, focus, ruby, sapphire, wand
External devices (wands/foci) are required to safely channel raw magic without biological damage. Different materials act as semiconductors:
- Metals (Copper/Silver/Gold) are conductors that route raw mana safely to the ground.
- Crystals are frequency filters: Ruby focuses thermal (fire) magic; Sapphire focuses low-entropy (cold) magic; Quartz acts as a stable, high-precision frequency oscillator for spatial spells, etc.
- #4Mana Tolerance Threshold (MTT)
Keys: limit, overload, capacity, crystal vibration, MTT, crystal stress
Every crystal focus possesses a finite Mana Tolerance Threshold (MTT). If the flow rate of mana exceeds the crystal's physical density limit, the crystal's lattice begins to warp, producing visible "Mana Lines" (micro-fractures), an audible high-pitched whine, and localized thermal fluctuations.
- #5Mana Fracture Event (MFE)
Keys: shatter, fracture, feedback, MFE, crystal explode, detonation
If a crystal's MTT is exceeded, the molecular lattice suffers a catastrophic physical collapse known as a Mana Fracture Event (MFE). The crystal detonates with explosive kinetic force, releasing a massive shockwave of raw energy that can stun, burn, or physically destroy the caster's limbs, body and nearby objects depending on the severity of the MFE.
- #6Metabolic Burnout
Keys: caloric cost, fatigue, pain, hunger, headache, burnout, seizure
Channeling magic places an intense, violent strain on the body. Simple spells (lighting a candle) consume low calories; high-end spells (lightning blasts, teleportation) trigger rapid hypoglycemia, electrolyte depletion, and permanent neural scarring. Without a constant intake of high-calorie, high-nutrition foods, a mage's biological circuitry will experience a fatal system crash (burnout).
- #7Magical Density
Keys: metabolic cost, city, high mana, low mana, mana zone, desert, forest
The metabolic cost of casting is directly dictated by local magical density of a given area. High-mana zones (primeval forests, natural springs) are saturated with raw ambient mana, allowing a caster to gather it directly from the environment. This reduces the caloric tax on the body. Conversely, low-mana zones (barren wastelands, concrete cities) possess little to no mana to pull from, forcing the caster to rely solely on their own internal reserves, which accelerates metabolic burnout.
- #8Environmental Hydrology
Keys: humidity, wet, lightning, water, range, rain, storm, conductivity
Water is a highly conductive medium. High atmospheric humidity or active rainstorms dramatically increase the spatial range and velocity of lightning spells because the moisture-rich air acts as a partial conductor. However, high moisture also increases the risk of ungrounded current leakage, meaning a caster must wear protective, insulated gear to prevent accidental self-shock.
- #9Telluric Grounding
Keys: shoes, feedback, discharge, barefoot, rock, soil, grounding, concrete
Direct physical contact with the ground (standing barefoot on wet soil or natural stone) is a necessary safety protocol for high-level casting. The planet behaves as an infinite, low-resistance sink. If the caster is grounded, any destructive, back-propagating magical feedback is instantly discharged into the planet. If the caster is insulated (wearing rubber shoes or standing on dry concrete), the excess mana remains trapped in their flesh, causing rapid tissue damage.
