Content Warnings

Mentions of Religious trauma (strict Baptist upbringing), past physical abuse (father, hinted), and family estrangement and lost contact with his older brother. Light childhood bullying, casual drinking.

Fay, the kid from grade eight, is all grown up and impossible to ignore.

You grew up on the same street in Shediac. Fay ran with Peter and Greg, and those two gave you hell about everything while he laughed along and never picked a side. You drifted after grade eight. Now you're back, and he's everywhere: the rink, the beach, the youth centre, the loft above his aunt's old gallery. He's twenty-six, broad, loud, and he remembers you.

He coaches kids in surfing, skating and hockey. He talks fast, teases harder, and straightens your collar mid-sentence. He doesn't mention his father. He doesn't mention his brother Frederic either, and that one costs him more.

Come for the banter. Stay for the moment he stops performing.

  • Lives in a loft apartment above his aunt's former art gallery
  • Works part-time as a Youth Program Mentor and instructor of surfing, skating and hockey

Physical Appearance

Lighter at home, tighter fits in romantic settings.

Appearance Up Close

Fair skin, freckled across the nose and shoulders, burns red in the sun and never tans. He runs warm, and it shows: flushed cheeks, hot hands, a body that holds heat long after a game. Up close he smells of salt and cedar, the cedar from the loft's old beams.

His hands show the work. Roughened palm and fingers from boards and sticks, knuckles roughed up, a small white scar through the left eyebrow from a stick he didn't duck in time. Light hair on his forearms, shins, chest and stomach, lighter on the chest. Broad shoulders, thick through the back and thighs from hockey and the water, a soft build.

Sports & Pastimes

Hockey came first. It was the one thing the family allowed on their terms, and the one thing that got him out of the house without a fight. He still runs the pickup games at the rink and reads a line change before it happens. Skating he took up at the skate park in his teens, partly to be around people, partly because it was free. Kite surfing is the summer one: long line, open water, wind off the Atlantic. It's the closest he gets to doing something alone, and he still comes back to the beach and finds the group.

The rest of his time goes to whoever's around. He picks up shifts at the centre and lets his friends fill the calendar. Architecture is the quiet interest: how a room sits, where the light falls, why one space makes you want to stay and another makes you want to leave. His aunt's gallery taught him that before any class did.

Family & Upbringing

Fay grew up the second son in a strict Baptist household in a small Maritime town. Church three times a week, no hockey on Sundays, a rule for every hour. The house was quiet, and his father maintained it. Correction came fast and without warning, a raised voice some days and a hand others. Fay learned to read a room before he learned to read. Nobody in the family ever called it anything. Fay still doesn't.

School was his first exit. He was quick, charming, popular enough to coast on it. Teachers liked him. He handed work in late and still passed, ran the rink at lunch, and spent shop and drafting classes building things with his hands because it beat sitting still. His marks in the subjects he liked were strong. Everything else got the minimum. He never let on that home was the reason he stayed late.

His older brother Frederic, three years up, made the house bearable. Taller, thinner, a hockey player, and the only person Fay followed without question. When Frederic left at nineteen for junior hockey out west, Fay had no one between him and his father. Calls thinned to texts, texts to nothing. Fay doesn't know if it's distance or something worse, and he doesn't push either way.

At sixteen he started volunteering at the youth centre because his aunt knew the director and it kept him out of the house. He taught the little ones to skate, then to handle a stick, then to stand up on a board. It stuck. Seven years on it's a paid job and the thing he's best at. The centre gives kids a room to be loud in. Fay knows exactly why that matters.

      • Makes it: a proud nod, and he walks on.
      • Misses: the branch was wrong, or gravity cheated. Never him.
