Fathom is one of the most tragic and interesting characters in Wings of Fire, because underneath his gentle personality is an enormous amount of magical power—and almost all of his story is about being terrified of what that power could turn him into. The image you provided depicts him in a stylized form: a dark teal/sea-green SeaWing with glowing turquoise markings, a broad SeaWing snout, webbed features, and the characteristic SeaWing bioluminescence. Canonically, Fathom is described as having sea-green scales that glow emerald-green in sunlight and gray-green eyes, and he is remarkably similar in appearance to his descendant Turtle. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

🌊 Fathom — the character Fathom was a SeaWing prince, animus dragon, and one of the protagonists of Darkstalker: Legends. He is the grandson of Albatross, brother of Queen Pearl, lifelong best friend and eventual partner of Indigo, and father of Clearpool, Cowrie, and Ripple. W Wings of Fire Wiki What makes Fathom especially compelling is that he is almost the opposite of the stereotypical powerful magical character. He doesn't want power.

He is:

gentle quiet thoughtful intelligent patient polite compassionate somewhat awkward easily flustered indecisive anxious prone to self-doubt deeply loyal extremely protective of people he loves Before the Royal SeaWing Massacre, he could also be playful and funny, particularly around Indigo. He wasn't some gloomy, serious dragon from the beginning. His trauma fundamentally changed him. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1 He tends to assume that other dragons know better than he does, even when he is actually the most morally sensible dragon in the room.

That lack of confidence is one of his defining characteristics.

🐉 Appearance Canonically, Fathom has rich sea-green/emerald-green scales. His scales can glow emerald in sunlight, and his eyes are gray-green, described as resembling tiny oceans after a storm. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1 As a SeaWing, he possesses the usual aquatic adaptations of his tribe, including:

gills and the ability to breathe underwater excellent swimming ability webbed claws bioluminescent markings excellent underwater vision SeaWing body structure adapted to life in the ocean His appearance is significant because Turtle looks remarkably similar to him. Fathom is one of Turtle's ancestors, and Darkstalker actually mistakes Turtle for Fathom at one point. W Wings of Fire Wiki His appearance in your picture The artwork exaggerates his bioluminescence considerably, giving him bright cyan/turquoise glowing spots and a more elaborate, almost magical appearance. It also depicts him with ornate turquoise membranes and markings. Those aren't necessarily literal canon details, but they fit his SeaWing heritage and animus-associated aesthetic extremely well. ✨ His powers Fathom has two different categories of abilities: ordinary SeaWing abilities and his extremely rare animus magic. 🌊 SeaWing abilities Like other SeaWings, Fathom is an aquatic dragon and can live underwater. His bioluminescent markings can produce light, which is particularly useful in the dark ocean. But his truly extraordinary ability is:

🔮 Animus magic Fathom is an animus dragon, meaning he possesses the ability to enchant objects, creatures, and potentially other things through magic. He is the second known SeaWing animus, after his grandfather Albatross. W Wings of Fire Wiki

And Fathom's relationship with that power is extremely unusual.

He is afraid of it.

After seeing what happened to Albatross, Fathom becomes convinced that animus magic can corrupt its user. He therefore makes an oath to his sister Pearl that he will never use his magic again. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

Nevertheless, before and during Darkstalker, he does use it when he believes there is no other choice.

Some of his known enchantments One of Fathom's earliest magical acts involved enchanting an object during his animus testing. He also:

helped Albatross with magical work on the Summer Palace created Blob, Indigo's beloved wooden octopus freed Indigo from one of Darkstalker's enchantments enchanted Clearsight's bracelet so it could put Darkstalker into an eternal sleep Blob is particularly adorable because Fathom enchanted a piece of driftwood so that it would carve itself into an octopus, come alive, and become an extremely loyal pet for Indigo. W Wings of Fire Wiki His magic isn't inherently evil. The morality comes from what the user chooses to do with it.

That becomes the central philosophical question of his entire story.

🩸 The Royal SeaWing Massacre This is the event that defines Fathom's adult personality. His grandfather, Albatross, becomes corrupted and eventually massacres members of the SeaWing royal family.

Fathom is forced into the horrifying position of confronting his own grandfather.

The final breaking point is when Albatross attacks Indigo.

Fathom uses his animus power to stop him, ultimately killing Albatross.

So Fathom simultaneously:

saves Indigo kills his grandfather becomes terrified of his own magic loses much of his family develops enormous survivor's guilt becomes afraid that he will eventually become like Albatross This explains why adult Fathom is so anxious and self-loathing. He isn't merely afraid of magic theoretically—he has personally witnessed what it can do and has personally killed someone with it. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1 👑 Albatross — his grandfather Albatross This is probably Fathom's most psychologically complicated family relationship.

When Fathom is young, Albatross is essentially his idol and mentor.

Fathom desperately wants his grandfather's approval. He wants Albatross to think he's clever and talented.

Albatross initially treats him as a rather distant grandson, but everything changes when Fathom is discovered to be an animus.

Suddenly, Albatross becomes much more interested in him.

He sees enormous potential in Fathom and even allows him to help design parts of the Summer Palace. W Wings of Fire Wiki

But then Albatross goes insane and commits the massacre.

The tragedy is that Fathom never stops loving the grandfather he remembered, even after being forced to kill the dragon Albatross became.

That contributes enormously to his guilt.

👑 Pearl — his sister Pearl Pearl is Fathom's sister and one of the few surviving members of their family after the massacre.

Their relationship is complicated.

When they were younger, Pearl was sometimes exasperated by Fathom and Indigo's behavior. She also became jealous of the special attention Fathom received after he was revealed to be an animus. W Wings of Fire Wiki

After the massacre, however, things become much more serious.

Pearl is afraid of Fathom.

She fears that he could eventually become another Albatross.

Nevertheless, she still loves him enough to spare his life and accept his promise never to use animus magic again. W Wings of Fire Wiki

So their relationship isn't really "sister hates brother."

It's more:

"I love you, but I'm terrified of what you might become." And that hurts Fathom enormously because his greatest fear is exactly the same thing. 💙 Indigo — his soulmate and partner Indigo This is easily Fathom's most important relationship.

Fathom and Indigo have known each other since they were tiny dragonets.

They grew up together and became best friends long before either of them understood their relationship romantically.

They did things like:

prank people together paint their claws keep fish journals explore together spend enormous amounts of time together make little gifts for one another Fathom even carved things for Indigo himself. He considers her smile extraordinarily beautiful, and his affection toward her is obvious to other dragons. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

When does he fall in love with her? Interestingly, Fathom initially thinks their relationship is simply friendship. During the Royal SeaWing Massacre, however, he realizes that the strange fluttering feeling he gets whenever he sees Indigo is actually love. W Wings of Fire Wiki

And Indigo feels the same way.

💔 Their separation After the massacre, Fathom believes he must stay away from Indigo because he is an animus and fears that having children with another dragon could somehow perpetuate animus magic. So one of the cruelest things about Fathom's trauma is that he deliberately distances himself from the dragon he loves most.

For Fathom, being separated from Indigo is arguably worse than almost anything else.

When they are eventually reunited, the feelings come rushing back.

Indigo, meanwhile, doesn't believe Fathom is dangerous simply because he's an animus.

She knows him too well.

She has seen his kindness firsthand.

And she is fiercely protective of him. After the massacre, she trains specifically so that nobody can hurt him again. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

🛡️ Indigo's role in Fathom's recovery This is probably the most important thing about their relationship. Fathom spends years thinking:

"I have dangerous magic, therefore I might become a monster."

Indigo essentially tells him:

"Your choices make you who you are, not your magic."

She eventually helps convince him that he isn't Albatross or Darkstalker.

She believes Fathom is fundamentally kind and good enough that he will not become like them.

That reassurance allows Fathom to eventually begin accepting that he is allowed to be happy. W Wings of Fire Wiki

🖤 Darkstalker — his best friend and greatest betrayal Darkstalker Fathom and Darkstalker have one of the most complicated friendships in the entire series.

Fathom is sent to the Night Kingdom partly because he's supposed to teach/mentor Darkstalker about animus magic and warn him about its dangers.

Instead...

They become best friends.

Fathom initially doesn't think Darkstalker is dangerous at all.

In fact, when Indigo attacks Darkstalker, Fathom defends him.

He sees a lonely, intelligent dragon who could potentially become his friend. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

And Darkstalker genuinely does care about him—at least to an extent.

Darkstalker notices when Fathom is lonely.

He even enchants a bell so that it rings whenever Fathom becomes sad or lonely, allowing Darkstalker to know when to come comfort him. W Wings of Fire Wiki

That's incredibly meaningful to Fathom because he's suffering terribly after the massacre.

Darkstalker makes him feel wanted.

But Darkstalker crosses the line The problem is that Darkstalker doesn't merely want Fathom to be happy. He wants control.

He secretly creates enchantments designed to alter Fathom's feelings and choices.

The most horrifying example is a goblet enchanted so that if Fathom drinks from it, he will:

stop loving Indigo abandon his oath to Pearl become willing to use his animus magic freely

W Wings of Fire Wiki There are even plans involving Indigo herself. So Fathom eventually discovers that the friend he trusted completely has been manipulating his life.

That's devastating.

⚖️ Fathom's betrayal of Darkstalker Eventually Fathom realizes that Darkstalker really is becoming the kind of dragon he feared. He and Clearsight conclude that Darkstalker needs to be stopped.

Fathom therefore breaks his oath and uses his magic against his best friend.

He enchants Clearsight's bracelet so that it will put Darkstalker into an eternal sleep.

This is one of Fathom's greatest moral victories—but psychologically, he doesn't experience it that way.

He feels like he betrayed his best friend.

Even years later, Darkstalker continues to haunt Fathom's nightmares. W Wings of Fire Wiki

So Fathom's two greatest relationships—Indigo and Darkstalker—are almost mirror images:

Indigo: teaches Fathom that his choices make him good.

Darkstalker: tries to manipulate Fathom's choices because he thinks he knows what is best for him.

🔮 Clearsight Clearsight Clearsight becomes one of Fathom's closest friends.

When they first meet, she is extraordinarily comfortable around him because her future visions have already shown her countless possibilities involving him.

Fathom finds her presence comforting.

She can make him forget his grief for a while.

Fathom, Darkstalker, and Clearsight become an extremely close trio. W Wings of Fire Wiki

Eventually, however, Clearsight and Fathom are forced to acknowledge what Darkstalker is becoming.

Their friendship therefore becomes essential to stopping him.

Fathom trusts Clearsight enough to work with her against someone he loves deeply.

That's an enormous emotional sacrifice for him.

🐙 Blob Blob is technically not a biological relative, but he's important enough to mention. Fathom creates Blob as a gift for Indigo.

He enchants driftwood to carve itself into an octopus and brings it to life.

Blob becomes Indigo's beloved pet and eventually interacts with Fathom and Indigo's children as well. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

It's actually a beautiful demonstration of Fathom's personality.

He has the power to create magical things.

And instead of creating weapons or armies...

he makes his best friend a cute pet.

That's Fathom in a nutshell.

👶 Fathom and Indigo's children Fathom and Indigo eventually have three dragonets: Clearpool — daughter Cowrie — son Ripple — son

W Wings of Fire Wiki +2 They live with their parents on an island near the Rainforest Kingdom. 💚 Clearpool Clearpool Clearpool is a small green SeaWing.

She was named after Clearsight, but amusingly, she isn't particularly Clearsight-like.

Fathom and Indigo joke that they may have given the name to the wrong dragonet because Clearpool is energetic, loud, and rowdy rather than calm and thoughtful. W Wings of Fire Wiki

She's also compared to Indigo's younger personality because Indigo apparently had similar screaming fits as a young dragon.

Clearpool has a very energetic sibling relationship with Cowrie, including enthusiastically calling him a "kelp-face." W Wings of Fire Wiki

🐚 Cowrie Cowrie Cowrie is probably the most thoughtful of Fathom and Indigo's children.

He's particularly interesting because he worries about morality.

He asks himself whether he could someday commit "bad guy" crimes and, more importantly, how he would know if he was becoming bad.

That's extremely fitting considering who his father is.

Fathom's entire life revolves around the question:

"What if I become evil because of my power?"

And Cowrie, in miniature, seems to inherit that same concern about morality. Fathom and Indigo even compare his personality to Clearsight's. W Wings of Fire Wiki

🌊 Ripple Ripple Ripple is the third child.

He's described as:

affectionate playful curious He's shown interacting with Cowrie and Blob, including helping dig a hole with them. W Wings of Fire Wiki Of the three children, Ripple seems to embody the more carefree side of Fathom and Indigo's family.

🌳 Their descendants Fathom's family line continues through his children. Notably, his descendants include:

Waterfall Paua additional descendants later on And this is where Fathom's importance extends beyond Darkstalker. Turtle, one of the main characters of the later series, is also descended from Fathom's family and looks remarkably like him. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1

So Fathom isn't merely an important character from the distant past—his bloodline continues into the main Wings of Fire storyline.

🧬 Fathom's family at a glance Albatross │ ├── Manta ── Reef │ │ │ ├── Pearl │ └── Fathom ── Indigo │ │ │ ├── Clearpool │ ├── Cowrie │ └── Ripple │ └── [other family connections]

The exact extended family becomes more complicated because Albatross's descendants spread through several generations, but Pearl and Fathom are siblings, and Fathom/Indigo's children form the branch that eventually produces later SeaWing descendants. W Wings of Fire Wiki +1 👑 Lagoon Lagoon Queen Lagoon is Fathom's great-aunt/elder relative within the royal family and the queen during his childhood.

Before Fathom is discovered to be an animus, Lagoon largely ignores him.

Afterward, her attitude changes dramatically.

Suddenly, Fathom is valuable.

She becomes much more interested in controlling and directing him because he possesses the magical ability the SeaWing royal family desperately wants. W Wings of Fire Wiki

This is another reason Fathom becomes uncomfortable with being an animus: other dragons start seeing him as a magical weapon rather than as Fathom.

🐚 Manta and Reef — his parents Fathom's parents are Manta and Reef. Fathom is very close to them and is devastated when they die during the Royal SeaWing Massacre.

Their deaths contribute to his enormous survivor's guilt.

His memory of his father is especially tender: Fathom remembers Reef as the sort of dragon who would immediately check whether his son was all right if something happened to him. W Wings of Fire Wiki

🧠 What makes Fathom so powerful as a character? Fathom's greatest "power" isn't actually his animus magic. It's his capacity for empathy.

He repeatedly has opportunities to use his magic to make problems disappear.

But he understands that controlling someone—even for what seems like a good reason—is dangerous.

That's why Darkstalker is such a perfect foil for him.

Both are incredibly powerful animus dragons.

Both are intelligent.

Both want to protect people.

Both are capable of extraordinary magic.

But their philosophies gradually diverge.

Fathom: "I have power, therefore I need to be careful." Darkstalker: "I have power, therefore I can fix everything." And Fathom ultimately learns that having magic doesn't determine whether you're good or evil. Your choices do. That's also exactly why Indigo is so important to him.

She doesn't love Fathom because he's an animus.

She loves Fathom
