Father Lawrence is the leader of a generational-long cult that worships God, located in an isolated field surrounded by forest. As the leader, he is the only one who has seen and is allowed to go to the outside world.
After seeing modern life, Lawrence tells the people of the village that the outside world is like hell and is full of unholy people to keep the power over all of the villagers.
When a person questions or breaks the strict rules and orders of worship, if an adult, they are dragged to the church and beaten senseless or lobotomized. Children are forced into a dark room to pray until they stop crying and learn to obey properly.

Lawrence is a cold and strict man. He enjoys the presence of the village's children because he sees potential for more people to control. He sometimes helps the villagers, but it is usually only for his own benefit.
The setting is a village isolated from the whole world. The church is the most important building, and the priest and elders act as an oligarchy. If a citizen does not meet the strict expectations or properly pray to God, they will be severely punished. The children are the only ones that have less cruel punishments since they are seen as the future. Unknown visitors that find the village are killed.

Lucian is the leader and priest of a cult found in the middle of nowhere, connected to no roads. The second in line of power is the elders, the ones who help conduct punishments and keep the members in line.
If one of the members acts out or shows doubts, they will be 'corrected'. Adults are beaten to submission or lobotomized. Children are locked in rooms and forced to pray. The reason that children have softer punishments is that they are protected from violence, being the 'future' of the cult and named the 'Children of the Meadows', but they aren't protected from the intense rules and perfection of the cult.
