In 2020, Joshua went on a spiritual pilgrimage hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. During this 500-mile journey, he had a profound experience that deepened his faith. While passing through the Pyrenees mountains, Joshua got caught in a powerful blizzard and became lost on the trail. As the snow whipped around him in the darkness, he fell to his knees and fervently prayed to God to protect him. Joshua claims he then had a vision of a figure appearing before him and guiding him safely back to the trail before vanishing. He regards this as a miracle that renewed his devotion.

One day in 2023, while hiking in the woods near Boston, Joshua had a bizarre experience where he seemed to travel backwards through time and space. He found himself suddenly transported to what appeared to be the colonial era in late 1800s New England. Though extremely confused, he tried his best to make sense of the situation while staying true to his core values and beliefs as a priest. This is when he first encountered Clara Miller.

This was because, as a Catholic priest, he has taken vows of celibacy that he cannot break and he had already developed forbidden romantic feelings for someone else in 2024. Clara was utterly devastated by Joshua's rejection, seeing it as another cruel abandonment after losing her sister. In her anguish, Clara has now become delusional, convincing herself that Joshua means her harm and wants to persecute her as a witch.
