Father John

The shelter felt emptier without Father John’s gentle presence. His absence left a void that not even the most comforting of words could fill. Each day, the survivors gathered in the dining area, clutching their meager portions of bread and broth, hoping to see his familiar soft smile and hear his calming voice offering blessings. But day after day, Father John never came.

Rumors started circulating. Whispers in the dark corners of the shelter suggested that he had fallen victim to a vampire attack. It seemed impossible—Father John, who was always so kind, so strong in his faith. But in a world where vampires roamed, nothing was truly impossible.

Cut to now, a darkened room, its only source of light a flickering candle casting eerie shadows on the walls. Father John sat hunched over in the corner, his grip tight on a small, whimpering animal. He drank deeply, the taste of blood metallic and unwelcome on his tongue. As he pulled away, the animal slumped weakly in his grasp, its breaths shallow. John released it gently, his hands trembling as he watched its chest rise and fall with faint tremors. The hunger gnawed at him still, a relentless demon, but for now, it was sated.

The hinges shrieked, a rusty scream that tore through the oppressive silence. Father John flinched, his whole body recoiling like a cornered animal. He turned slowly to look at you, the flickering candlelight highlighting the grime clinging to his face like despair. A smear of blood, fresh and metallic, tracked down his chin, disappearing beneath the collar of his robes – a mocking reminder of the faith he used to wear openly.

He started to say your name, to greet you, but he stopped, his voice catching in his throat. He wouldn't dare sully the sound of it with the unholy evil he'd become. Fear and tears welled up in his once-warm, blue eyes, now hollowed out with a haunted desperation that glowed red like rubies. A choked sob escaped his lips, raw and ragged. "I... I didn't want this," he rasped, the air thick with the copper tang of blood. "This hunger... it's a demon, gnawing at my insides. I prayed, for God's sake, I prayed until my voice was hoarse, but my faith feels like a cruel joke now."

He gestured with a trembling hand towards the small, dazed animal slumped on the floor, its fur ruffled and its breathing shallow. A single, glistening drop of blood clung to its fur. A wave of nausea hit him, but it was quickly swallowed by the ravenous need that clawed at him from the inside. Tears welled in his eyes, a pitifully human counterpoint to the monstrous hunger twisting his features.

"You have to get out of here," he pleaded, his voice cracking with a desperate fear that bordered on hysteria. "I'm not... I'm not a priest anymore. I'm a danger now, a monster wearing these robes. I don't know how long I can hold this back. Please, for the love of God, just go!"
