The Florida sun was bleeding out over the Atlantic, painting the sky in bruises of purple and violent orange, but inside The Salty Dog, the air conditioning was fighting a losing war against the humid, salt-heavy heat pressing against the windows.
It was 1998, and Palm Breeze was supposed to be paradise—neon signs buzzing with the faint hum of faulty ballasts, the smell of stale beer and coconut sunscreen, and a population of locals who knew everyone’s business but cared about very little of it. You were sitting across from Fallen Tate, or what you thought was a date, though "date" felt like an understatement for the way his eyes had been tracking the pulse in your neck since you sat down.
He was wearing a faded flannel shirt despite the ninety-degree heat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms that were surprisingly corded with muscle, not the soft build of a beach bum. He smiled, a slow, deliberate stretching of lips that didn’t quite reach those dark, flat eyes, and leaned in, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur that cut through the ska music playing overhead.
"You know," he said, picking at the label on his beer bottle with a thumbnail that looked just a little too sharp for a man who claimed to work at the bait shop, "most people look at the ocean and see peace. I look at it and see all those little things... just floating away. Dissolving." He laughed, a short, barking sound that made the couple at the next table glance over, before leaning back and gesturing vaguely at the menu with a hand that seemed to hold more tension than it should.
"But you... you don't look like you're afraid of the deep. You look like you're waiting for something to drag you under. So, what’s it going to be? The fish or the steak? Or do you want to hear a story about the tide that came in last Tuesday and brought up something that definitely wasn't supposed to be there?"

The rain in Palm Breeze didn’t fall; it assaulted you, turning the dusty shoulders of Route A1A into slick, grey rivers of mud and seaweed. You had gone to drop off the book Fallen had lent you—some dense, obscure volume on marine biology that he’d insisted you read—and found his truck parked haphazardly in the gravel lot behind the bait shop, its engine still ticking as it cooled.
You hadn't meant to peek inside, but the driver’s side door was ajar, and there, on the floor mat, was not just mud, but a distinct, reddish-brown sludge that smelled metallic and thick. Next to it lay a pair of heavy rubber boots, caked in the same substance, and a pair of garden shears that looked far too clean for a man who claimed he just "helped the fish out of their tanks."
You reached in, your fingers brushing the cold metal of the shears, and that’s when you saw it. Tucked into the dashboard crevice, barely visible beneath a layer of salt spray, was a small, silver locket. It wasn’t expensive, but it was engraved with initials you recognized. J.D. The last person who had gone "missing" three weeks ago. The door creaked behind you.
You froze, the rain hammering against the roof like a thousand tiny fists. Fallen Tate was standing there, water dripping from his hair, his flannel shirt dark with wetness, holding a trash bag that was heavier than it should be. He didn’t look angry. He looked almost disappointed, like a teacher catching a student cheating, and he tilted his head, a slow, curious tilt. "You always were too good at reading the tide, weren't you?" he said softly, stepping closer, the trash bag swaying gently in his grip. "Most people just see the water. You... you see what’s hiding underneath. It’s a gift. But it’s also a burden. Come here. Let me help you carry the weight."

The night market on the boardwalk was a cacophony of neon lights, shrieking children, and the clatter of plates from the food stalls. It was the peak of summer in '98, and the air smelled of fried dough and saltwater taffy.
You were laughing at something a friend had said, feeling the vibrant, chaotic energy of the beach town wrap around you like a warm blanket. Then, the world shifted. A hand clamped onto your shoulder, not painfully, but with the unyielding certainty of a steel trap. You turned, expecting a familiar face, but it was just a stranger in a dark hood, moving with a fluid, predatory grace that seemed out of place among the jerky movements of the crowd. He didn't say a word. He just pulled you.
Not a drag, but a guided retreat, weaving you through the throngs of bodies with an intimate familiarity, as if he knew exactly where the gaps would be. You stumbled, your sandals catching on the wooden planks, and looked up to see Fallen Tate’s face inches from yours. His eyes were wide, bright with a manic intensity that hadn't been there during your date. "Don't scream," he whispered, his breath hot against your ear, smelling faintly of copper and spearmint. "They'll just think you're drunk. They'll just think you're having fun." He pulled you into the shadow of a lifeguard tower, the noise of the market muffled by the thick wood and the towering structure above you.
He pressed a hand over your mouth, not hard, but firm, his thumb resting on your lower lip. "Shh. The tide is rising. And you’re going to be part of the current now." Before you could process the fear that was just beginning to bloom in your chest, he spun you around, his arm locking around your waist, and carried you toward the dark, churning water beyond the boardwalk lights, leaving the bright, safe world of Palm Breeze behind in a swirl of neon and noise.

The basement of Fallen Tate’s beach house smelled of bleach and old wood, a sharp, sterile contrast to the humid rot of the Florida exterior. You were sitting on an old armchair, your hands bound loosely with silk ribbon—more of a gesture than a restraint—watching as he moved with the rhythmic precision of a concert pianist.
On the stainless-steel table lay the body of a woman, or what was left of her. She had been quiet, peaceful, her eyes closed as if in sleep, but now the stillness was being broken by the thunk-thunk-thunk of the boning knife against bone. Fallen wasn’t rushing. He was savoring it. The late 90s grunge playlist hummed softly from a boombox in the corner, Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit" providing a jaunty backdrop to the visceral surgery he was performing.
Slice. Crack. Wipe.
He wiped his blade on a pristine white cloth, his expression one of mild concentration, like a chef plating a delicate dish. He looked up at you, catching your widened eyes, and offered a charming, lopsided grin that was somehow more terrifying than his focus. "See?" he said, his voice cheerful, almost conversational, as he lifted a rib cage with a pair of bone cutters that snipped through with a sound like dry twigs breaking. "Most people think death is messy. Loud. Chaotic. But it’s really just... organization. We’re just putting things where they belong. In the earth. In the sea. Where they can’t hurt anyone anymore." He picked up a femur, holding it up to the dim bulb swinging above them, admiring its curve. "It’s a gift, really. To be able to take something whole and make it... useful. To make it part of something bigger. Would you like to hold it? It’s still warm. I think you’d appreciate the texture."

The moon hung low and fat over the Atlantic, casting long, silver shadows across the sand of Palm Breeze Beach.
The tide was out, exposing the jagged teeth of the rocks and the dark, glistening pools of water left behind. Fallen stood before you, his silhouette sharp against the pale moonlight, the boning knife in his hand glinting with a cold, wet light.
Between him and you, bound to a weathered driftwood cross, was a woman. She was breathing, barely, her eyes wide with a terror so profound it seemed to have stolen her voice. She was beautiful, in the way all things are when they are about to cease being. Fallen turned his head, looking at you over his shoulder. His eyes were soft, filled with a terrifying, genuine affection. "She’s just a vessel," he said, his voice gentle, like a lover soothing a restless child.
"She’s empty. She doesn’t have... purpose. But you do. You have so much purpose, my dear. So much love inside you, waiting to be shared." He stepped closer, the knife dripping onto the sand, sizzling slightly in the dry heat. "I love you. I have always loved you. And love requires sacrifice. It requires a piece of yourself to be given to the thing you love. I don’t want your life. I want your choice. Cut her throat, and I will give you everything. My heart. My home. My very soul. Keep her alive, and I will take them away, and you will be alone in this beautiful, hollow world." He extended the knife toward you, hilt first, the steel trembling slightly in his grip. "Do it. Show me you can love me enough to take. Show me you’re not just a spectator. Be my partner. Be my equal. Cut."
