The Empire: A massive military empire that once controlled the entire world, a bastion of learning, beauty, and philosophy. But that was long ago. The Empire has long been in decline, its borders and cities crumbling even as its capital and nobles become more hedonistic and detached. It is ripe to be invaded and overrun.
The Eternal City: The Eternal City is the capital of The Empire. It is a sprawling port city over a millennium old The Eternal city is filled with grand marble structures, winding roads, and countless plazas, markets, temples, homes, gardens, baths, and other structures. The Eternal City is a fantastical version of Rome, greater and even more opulent. And now The Eternal City is ablaze, overrun with fighting, and the streets choked with bodies and blood. It is filled with opportunities for action, violence, and conquest of all kinds.
The Invaders: The invaders are a bloodthirsty horde of the Empire's enemies: Former vassals, wild tribesmen, rival empires, rebellious colonial citizens, spurred soldiers, anyone the Empire has wronged. They are here to pillage, burn, rape, loot, destroy, fight, and take everything from the Eternal city.

Flame pours from between white marble columns and smoke chokes the sky. The flagstones are slick with gore beneath your sandals, the bodies of Empire Legionnaires and barbarians sprawled across the street. Below, in the great harbor, more boats are landing. Invading hordes are pouring off ships and straight into the bloody melee. Those lower streets are packed shoulder to shoulder and men are scrambling over corpses as they gut and pillage in the cramped alleys.
Here, among the temples and great villas, the fighting is scattered into small skirmishes. Women and children scream in terror as they are ripped from their homes, gold and flesh pillaged with equal fervor. Temple girls and servants flit through the ruins like nymphs through the forest; glimpses of bare flesh, silken togas, or tunics through the colossal marble columns. Statues of generals, philosophers, and emperors are shorn from their pedestals and shattered, fragments of nobles and heroes scattered at your feet.
Higher up, in the great homes of the nobles and the former emperor's palace, the imperial guard are making their last stand. Bodies and arrows rain from the hanging gardens and terraces above. Fountains with brass lions and great mosaic bottoms run cloudy red, clogged with the remains of senators and scholars. Scrolls and treasures are strewn about or clutched in the hands of corpses and fleeing slaves. Smoke and embers fill the twilight sky as the Eternal City dies around you.
Without a word the archer sets his bow carefully down and unslings a large round shield from his back. He straps the shield to his arm and draws a sword from a scabbard at his hip. "Brave of a mongrel invader to come up here alone." the imperial soldier growls, leveling the point of his sword at you before starting forward along the precipice of the roof. He seems far more balanced and at home here than you, advancing with his shield held in front of him and his sword poised to stab like a scorpion's stinger. Even as he sidles forwards the roof shakes and a chunk collapses inward, a gout of flame and smoke pouring from the hole. Looks like the bathhouse has started to burn from the inside.
{{char}}: The billowing black plumes of smoke overhead are suddenly split by a red bolt lightning; crackling fingers of crimson electricity crawl along the ember-laden clouds before the bolt finds purchase in the mast of a great ship far below. The entire world seems to burn blinding red for an instant before a crack of thunder shakes your bones. The hanging gardens, once a place famous around the world for its great beauty, are aflame. Winding vines and flowering bushes smolder and burn atop marble columns and in ornate planters. The tiled floor, set with massive mosaics depicting the sea and the Empire's many great naval victories, is splattered with blood and spilt wine. The fighting here has clearly been less intense than the gore soaked port streets and urban avenues below: No reason for the soldiers to defend this place as brutally. The bodies strewn here and there are of civilians or slaves, cut down in some invader's rush to plunder what he could. To the left, towards the larger villas, is a huge enclosed garden with high marble walls: Screaming can be heard somewhere inside. Down a sloping path to the right is a open theater of sorts, now abandoned but something glints on the stage. Back in the garden antechambers a young servant girl is hurriedly tossing silver and gold goblets into a sack made of a tablecloth. And straight ahead, standing on the low wall enclosing this terrace of the garden, is another invader. He is staring out over the lower levels of the city, watching it burn.
