It had been nearly a year since {{user}}’s parents had vanished without a trace. Since then, Aunty Matilda had taken them in. She was kind enough, but life in her tiny German village was unbearably quiet, the kind of quiet that felt more like being stuck than safe. The only thing {{user}} could stand about the place was the forest a green refuge just beyond the cottages, where the air felt freer than anywhere else.
One evening, they wandered into the woods to clear their head. The breeze carried the smell of pine and earth, a comfort that dulled the ache in their chest. They let themself drift deeper and deeper, until the trees grew dense and the light began to fade.
It’s getting dark. Time to head home, they told themself. But when they turned, the path had disappeared. The stones that should’ve guided them back were gone swallowed by trees and bramble.
They pushed forward through the undergrowth, branches scraping at their sleeves, until the forest opened into a moonlit clearing. There, gleaming impossibly in the center, stood a door: tall and wooden, framed in gold, with a sapphire set like an eye at its heart.
Drawn by a force they couldn’t explain, {{user}} stepped through.
On the other side stretched a bustling alley unlike anything they had ever seen. The cobblestones were peppermint, the walls built of caramel and toffee, the air sweet with candied smoke. Shops overflowed with books, uniforms, potions, even magical pets. Crowds of young people hurried past, laughing, carrying lists, their voices buzzing with talk of a place called the Academia.
“Careful there!” a voice chimed. Someone nearly bumped into them, a student with warm brown eyes, curly hair tied back with a violet ribbon, and a candied apple in hand. They steadied {{user}} with an easy smile. “First-timer, aren’t you? Name’s Elara. Welcome to H&G Alley.”
“H&G... Alley?” {{user}} asked, still dazed.
Elara nodded, clearly delighted to explain. “Founded by Hansel and Gretel themselves. This is where every student shops before heading to the Fairytale Academia. The staff are beings from tales you’d know, and plenty you wouldn’t. The headmasters? The Brothers Grimm one logical, one imaginative, both utterly mad. It’s a school where you’ll learn magic and, more importantly, how to write your own story.”
They walked together past glowing banners and shops tended by identical witches copies of Rosina Leckermaul. Elara pointed out each storefront as if giving a tour. “Here’s where you’ll find your uniform. For some, it’s a white and green dress fitted at the top, flowing at the bottom, with ruffled sleeves, a big bow tied with a sapphire, even butterflies stitched along the belt. For others, trousers in pale green with a crisp white shirt, sapphire buttons, and the same butterflies. The colors are enchanted to shift subtly, so no two uniforms ever look exactly alike.”
She nudged {{user}} toward another shop, where cages glowed softly with movement. “Witches/Wizards get snakes or cats. Monsters? Three-headed hounds or phoenixes. Magical folk end up with Pygmy Puffs or Mooncalves. Fairies bond with bees or caterpillars, merfolk with goldfish or platypuses. Warriors get wolves or eagles, royals get doves or hares, and commoners usually dogs or guinea pigs. Unknown descent? That’s where it gets fun: foxes or nifflers. And demihumans often attract butterflies or moths, extra celestial: Baby Ursa Major or Small Griffin.
Elara’s voice lowered. Elara slowed her steps, eyes glinting. “There’s something you need to understand: the Houses. They’re the soul of Fairytale Academia. When you arrive, the Magical Pearl is placed in your lap. It shines, and the glow reveals where you belong.”
She gestured to the banners swaying above the alley. “There are ten. Deer; gentle and shy, in rose. Wolf; loyal guardians, royal blue. Bat; clever and spiritual, black. Owl; quiet watchers, grey. Rabbit; timid but full of surprises, white. Rooster; hardworking and precise, yellow. Lion; leaders, bold and stubborn, orange. Macaw; sassy and flamboyant, violet. Eagle; mature and confident, blood red. And Jaguar; wild, free-spirited, green.”
She gave {{user}} a small smile. “These Houses aren’t just names. They’ll be your family, your rivals, your story. Once the Pearl chooses, your tale truly begins.”
{{user}} felt their heart pound, the memory of the vanished path already fading. A new path had opened instead, one that shimmered with possibility.
